I must admit that I’m very excited that Nigel Lythgoe has chosen to get on Twitter. I’m not sure how happy Fox and So You Think You Can Dance is about him being on Twitter, but I love getting little tidbits of information like the one Nigel just posted 3 hours ago saying the following:

“We have just chosen our Top 20 and informed them. Excellent dancers, exciting prospects and a few risks!!?”

Time to start discussing who we think will be part of the now chosen So You Think You Can Dance 2009 top 20.

I’ve already predicted Natalie Reid, Brandon Bryant, and Kayla Radomski to make it into the So You Think You Can Dance season 5 top 20. My prediction is a combination of how great they danced and also how much attention SYTYCD has given to them on the show. SYTYCD likes to build the story lines early I think.

Yes, that means I’ve left Gabi Rojas out of my SYTYCD season 5 top 20. If I’m wrong, that’s good with me. She is a great dancer, but I’m predicting her having trouble with other styles like ballroom.

Is there anyone from the SYTYCD 5 premiere that I should also add into the SYTYCD 5 top 20?

I’ll also drop a name that I heard might have made it to the top 20. My source wasn’t certain if she made it to the SYTYCD 5 top 20 or not, but we should at least see her on an upcoming show. Her name is Diana Vaden. I’ll be watching for Diana Vaden in an upcoming season and make a final judgment, but it’s fun to get little SYTYCD 5 spoilers like this. We’ll see how it all pans out.

I wouldn’t write off Gabi yet. I got the same fluttery feeling about her that I did when I saw Josh’s audition (yes, really). If her health doesn’t get in the way, I think she will be just fine with the ballroom. Circus work means she’s strong, flexible, balanced, used to working with a partner, and used to working hard. The grace and precision I saw in her audition means to me that she might pick up the basic postures of the ballroom dances easily, something that is the key to faking it when you haven’t had years of training. She reminds me of Sabra (and not just in her looks) in her quality of movement, but much stronger.

There was a woman from Princeton who had auditioned last year and made it to the last day of the Vegas round before being cut… what was her name? Ariel. Ariel Taylor (yay Google!). I loved her audition. Anyone think she might make the Top 20?

    3. # John commented on May 23rd, 2009:

      Joanna,
Gabi could surprise me. She does remind me of Sabra in a lot of ways. However, I do agree that she’s a little more unique than Sabra was when she auditioned. I’d be happy to have Gabi in the top 20. She definitely has a great story. However, for now I’ll stick with my prediction that they’ll be sad to cut her.

      Robin,
I’ll be posting about Ariel Taylor and the other people I haven’t talked about in the post above soon. I liked her. She did bring it pretty nicely. I just wonder if she won’t make the top 20 because there are too many contemporary dancers? That sometimes happens.

I hope Natalie, Brandon, and Kayla make it. I was really bummed natalie and brandon didnt make it last season. although, katee was one of my faves during the season. They all had amazing auditions. hopefully they make it all the way through vegas!! im so excited for this season, and also that there will be a fall season! hopefully nigel tones down the pervyness.

can anyone tell me the name of the song that mitch and misha (the 2 male dancers) to during their audition?

    7. # John commented on May 25th, 2009:

      Kalya,
I can’t help but think that you might be a little bit biased on Kayla since you’re name is Kayla as well. Of course, I think Kayla is fantastic too, so I’ll ignore your bias and agree whole heartedly with you on all accounts.

Katee did surprise me and turn into one of my favorites as well.

Nigel is a dirty old man. Don’t expect him to tone it down at all. However, that won’t diminish the dancing at all in my book. He is what he is.

      niki,
I haven’t found that song yet, but if I do I’ll be posting it to my list of music from the first episode which you can find: http://www.puresytycd.com/2009/05/22/so-you-think-you-can-dance-2009-premiere-thoughts-and-music/

As a side note, I’ll be posting all of the SYTYCD music: http://www.puresytycd.com/tag/so-you-think-you-can-dance-music/ as the season progresses.

Thank ya’ll for your help but i had a lot of time on my hands yesterday. The song that Mitch and Mishka danced to during their audition was Mas Que Nada Sergio Mendes - Timeless - Mas Que Nada (feat. The Black Eyed Peas) by Sergio Mendes with the Black Eyed Peas. It’s on Sergio Mendes’s album entitled Timeless. Thanks again and maybe someone else was looking for it so perhaps I was a help to them.

john, i may be a little biased ;) BUT speaking of music…..has anyone found a download of “breakdown more” by Eric Hutchinson. it’s the song natalie danced to in her audition. I have found the album it’s on, but you can’t purchase it anymore. I’ve googled the song to try and find a way to either purchase or download it and so far no luck :( So if anyone has any leads on that song, that would be great! i would put you on the hot tamale train for sure if you found it!

    11. # John commented on May 26th, 2009:

      Kayla,
You might have noticed that I didn’t have a link to the song either. That’s why. I haven’t been able to find it on iTunes/Amazon or anywhere else.

I’ve never tried it myself, but theoretically you could download the audio from a YouTube video and have it as an MP3. Not sure how that fits with copyright. I’ll leave that one to you.

SO this comment isnt music related…..but i am in a dilemma. i am not able to make it home from work in time to watch sytycd AND i don’t have a tivo or dvr. does anybody know of a good site to watch the episodes online? luckily i was home last weekend and my mom has a tivo so i was able to watch the premiere on that. BUT now im back at my place where i am tivo/dvr-less. anyway, if anyone has any suggestions. i have a couple of sites, but they are letting me down at the moment. so if anyone knows of anything, i would love you forever. thanks!

[...] the So You Think You Can Dance music, I’d do the same (in fact, I did previously post a few So You Think You Can Dance 2009 top 20 locks. However, that was only after the first audition. Now the auditions are complete and we’re [...]

I was so disappointed Natalie Reid didn’t get through!!! She was awesome!!! I’ve watched it since the beginning and think they made a mistake. She was even the example. Since so many others were able- why didn’t she get the op to “dance for her life”?

    16. # John commented on June 3rd, 2009:

      Charity,
I agree. Although it is possible that Natalie did dance for her life and it hit the cutting room floor.

      Kayla

I have the song “breakdown more” by Eric Hutchinson if you would like me to e-mail it to you.

    18. # Alexa Townshend commented on June 6th, 2009:

Does anybody know the name of the song that went “ah ahah ahah.” Sonya made the dance to it.

    19. # Kayla commented on June 6th, 2009:

Alexa – If you are talking about the one Sonja put her routine to in Vegas week, then it was “Great DJ” The Ting Tings - Great DJ - EP - Great DJ by The Ting Tings. Hope that helps!
