The SYTYCD Rant: Let’s Hear About Your Favorite Dancers Getting Sent Home

Since we’re in the Las Vegas round, it’s the perfect time to have what I’m calling the SYTYCD rant. This is where I’m going to rant about my favorite dancers getting sent home. Only problem is that I’m on the west coast and so I still have an hour until the show airs. Once the show airs I’ll be updating this post with my feelings on who I thought shouldn’t have been sent home. Until I get to enjoy So You Think You Can Dance, I welcome you to post your SYTYCD rant in the comments. Come on! Let it all out. It will make you feel better to see other people who feel the same way you do.

My SYTYCD rants…

Natalie Reid – I’m sure that no one will be surprised with this rant. What a way to cut tonight’s episode. First, you show Natalie Reid and Brandon Bryant rocking out and demonstrating Sonya’s choreography for the others and then next thing you know she’s being kicked off of So You Think You Can Dance. I do have to agree that Natalie’s actual performance wasn’t as good as what Brandon and her did together, but it does seem like something’s missing in this story.

Everyone watching the show from home thought that Natalie Reid should have gotten a chance to dance for their life. To be honest, they didn’t use the Dance for Your Life card nearly enough this season. Lil’ C said on his twitter that you only get to dance for your life if someone disagrees, but they said that Natalie Reid going home was unanimous. I guess there goes my theory that she maybe did dance for her life and it just landed on the virtual cutting room floor.

All of this said, I thought that Natalie Reid would make it to the So You Think You Can Dance top 20, but I wasn’t too disappointed to see her go. Just sad for her more than anything.

Caitlin Kinney Dancing for Her Life
Ok, I know that Caitlin kind of screwed up Mia’s choreography, but that doesn’t matter to me. The judges should lay their hands off my Caitlin Kinney. Sure, I was glad to be able to see more of Caitlin Kinney dancing, but they definitely shouldn’t have scared me by leaving the vote to Mary Murphy. Seriously, it may be the only time I was happy with Mary Murphy this season. She made a phenomenal choice to keep Caitlin Kinney on the show.

Ok, so yes I’m showing some utter and complete bias on this rant, but that’s what being a fan is all about. Now everyone that reads this website will know my bias up front. Although, I reserve the right to change my mind.

Mia is Such a Wench
There are probably a few other words that aptly describe Mia, but I like to avoid using those words. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy watching her choreography. She definitely has an awkwardly creative mind that has hit a few home runs on So You Think You Can Dance. I just didn’t like her as a judge. She was so arrogant about being a judge. Nice to see she’s opinionated, but it went too far a few times I think. Of course, Mary Murphy is still at the top of my list of least favorite judges and will remain there forever. Anyone else notice that Mary Murphy said so little in this round. That’s because she says so little of worth.

Missing Dancers
I’m not really sure how they resolve this issue, but I’d like to get to know more of the dancers and see more of the dances. I’ll give the show a bit of a pass since they have a lot of dancing to cram into 2 hours. However, I wish they offered the bonus footage of all the extra dancing and outtakes on fox.com. Maybe they’ll finally figure that out in their 10th season of the show.

I must admit that I thought I’d have a lot more rants. I think that’s a really good sign for the show. It was incredibly entertaining and the quality of the dancers in the top 20 is awesome. I can’t wait to find out who are the official So You Think You Can Dance top 20. Are there any other SYTYCD rants that I missed?

So You Think You Can Dance Las Vegas Week Music – Episode 1

As I’ll be doing throughout the season, I plan on posting all of the So You Think You Can Dance 2009 music. So far the music from this season has been amazing and I don’t expect that to change. However, the Las Vegas week music is sometimes harder to figure out than other weeks. So, I’m posting this early so that people can leave comments as they figure out the various music from So You Think You Can Dance Las Vegas week episode 1. I plan on updating this post throughout the night.

As a side note while you wait for the start of SYTYCD, Ash Koley’s “Don’t Let Your Feet Touch Ground” Ash Koley - Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground - Single - Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground is now on iTunes for those who wanted to download the song, but it wasn’t available.

Music Heard on Tonight show (still needs to be placed in order, hopefully)

Montage at the 5 min. mark (montage of first solo dances) was “Dance With Me” Old 97's - Blame It on Gravity - Dance With Me by The Old 97’s

“Freeze” T-Pain - Freeze (feat. Chris Brown) - Single - Freeze (feat. Chris Brown) by T-Pain and Chris Brown

“Make You Feel My Love” ADELE - 19 - Make You Feel My Love by Adele

“Hold You In My Arms” Ray LaMontagne - The Last Kiss - Hold You In My Arms By Ray Lamontagne

“Freeze” T-Pain - Freeze (feat. Chris Brown) - Single - Freeze (feat. Chris Brown) by T-Pain (feat. Chris Brown)

Closing Montage showing the final solo performances was to the song “Shot Away” (Buy Single on Amazon) by Pawn Shop (Although many people say this sounds a lot like “Gimme Shelter” by The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - Gimme Shelter, the words are close but not the same)

During the end credits was the song “Dance With Me” Old 97's - Blame It on Gravity - Dance With Me by Old 97s

**I counted up the number of different pieces of music on tonight’s episode and I counted 83 pieces of music. Granted a number of the songs were used a couple times and some of it was just background music that no one cares about, but that’s still a lot of music. I guess it’s hard to do much dance without music.

Short Dance Film Starring Evan Kasprzak

It seems like people are nominating Evan Kasprzak to single handedly bring back the dancing of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. At least so it seems. Well, fans of this type of dancing and Evan Kasprzak in particular will enjoy this short film of Evan Kasprzak before showing his talent to all of America on So You Think You Can Dance.

Anyone else willing to predict that Evan Kasprzak will be in the So You Think You Can Dance top 20? I’m predicting Evan and his brother both make it to the top 20.

Pono Aweau Representing Hawaii on So You Think You Can Dance

I found this quick news article about Pono Aweau representing Hawaii in the top 20 of So You Think You Can Dance. I guess that means this is a SYTYCD spoiler huh? Oh well, it’s fun to get to know a little more about Pono Aweau

Aweau will fly to Las Vegas on Tuesday to make the next cut, and be one of the 20 finalists.

“It’s not even an option to not get this to not win it I’m going in for the kill it’s a battle it’s a war and I’m gonna come out the victor,” he said.

Donning less hair but full of determination, the 23-year-old dancer from Kailua already has plenty of local support.

He’s a member of the group 24-7 Dance Force, which gave him a send off on Sunday.

Judges were impressed enough to compare Aweau to Mark Kanemura, who was also from 24-7 Dance Force, and made it to the top six in last year’s show. He’s also been an inspiration for Aweau.

“Seeing him up close and seeing him do it you just don’t think that you can and then because we are so close he’s a really good friend of mine it made me think oh if he can do it oh I really could.”

Aweau says the dancing bug bit him when he was a fifth grader at Kamehameha Schools.

It’s always fun for me when people come from Hawaii since I lived there for a couple years. Just reading the news kind of takes me back. Ok, no one cares about me. Let’s get to the show tonight already!!

Taylor Swift’s Song “Love Story” on SYTYCDA

I previously made a list of So You Think You Can Dance music suggestions and one of the songs on my list was “Love Story” Taylor Swift - Fearless - Love Story by Taylor Swift. Turns out I was right that it would make a good song for So You Think You Can Dance. Check out this performance on SYTYCD Australia by Talia and Loredo to it:

Also, @nataliekline sent me a tweet that Gavin Degraw’s song “Stay” Gavin DeGraw - Free - Stay will be featured on tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance! A little something to look forward to. I wonder if his song will make it on my next list of top So You Think You Can Dance 2009 songs.

Chelsie Hightower and Katee Shean Can Sing?

This video is really dark, but seeing Chelsie Hightower sing just made me laugh. I think Katee Shean is the girl on the far side from Chelsie also. Not sure about the girl in the middle. Anyway, this gave me a good laugh, but it doesn’t seem that Chelsie will be following in Julianne’s footsteps with a singing career on top of her dancing career. Enjoy!
