Melissa Sandvig (Naughty Ballerina) Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

I’m really glad to finally put a name with a face. Previously, I’d only known her as the naughty ballerina. Her face will live forever in people’s minds I think. Well, her name is Melissa Sandvig and she made it to the So You Think You Can Dance top 20, so that says she must be much more than just a ballerina.

With that said, check out this video of Melissa Sandvig performing a really beautiful solo piece. I’m not sure if SYTYCD can support hanging cloth from the roof, but this could create a really cool solo I think if they’ll do it. Check it out to see what I mean.

Karla Garcia Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Karla Garcia isn’t the traditional dancer, but I think she’s going to really add a different twist on the show. Has there ever been another Filipino dancer on the show? Another person who wasn’t featured on SYTYCD much at all.

This is a really interesting feature on Karla Garcia doing a broadway show and also talking about her dance studio. I wish we had features like this on all of the SYTYCD top 20.

Since you’re probably interested in seeing Karla Garcia’s dancing, you’ll enjoy this video of her performing a solo before SYTYCD. I think it shows a lot of energy and passion for dancing which should carry over well if she ever has to dance for her life.

Here’s another raw studio video of Karla performing before SYTYCD. Kind of fun to watch her performing with others behind her.

Also, the above video had this bio on Karla Garcia:
Karla Garcia hails from the DC Metropolitan area. She has been dancing competitively since the age of 6. She trained under Fran and Jimmy Peters at Fran’s Studio of Dance. She also attended the Kirov Academy of Ballet and the Washington School of Ballet. She decided to take her dancing further and pursue the big apple. She received a scholarship to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received a BFA in dance and a minor in journalism. During her final year of college, she landed a spot in the Broadway dance musical HOT FEET.

Recently, she completed 7 months on the national tour of the Broadway hit WICKED. Other credits include So You Think You Can Dance season 3 Las Vegas semi-finals, Carnival NY and LA, Rite Aid industrial, Radio City Rockette ensemble, and a Lucille Roberts Fitness commercial. She is a member of BOOGIE BOTS CREW and SIOPAO, both DC based. She is represented by Clear Talent Group agency and currently resides in NY, performing, teaching, and choreographing. She thanks God for all the gifts HE has given her.

Jeanine Mason Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Since we really didn’t get much of a chance to get to see Jeanine Mason’s dancing on So You Think You Can Dance so far, it seems fitting to find some videos of Jeanine Mason before making it into the SYTYCD top 20.

This first video is of Jeanine Mason doing a solo number at age 17:

This is really just a short clip of Jeanine Mason dancing before SYTYCD. She’s the first dancer on stage:

This is another nice video of Jeanine Mason doing a solo before SYTYCD. The camera is a little far away for my liking, but it still shows her talent pretty well.

It’s unfortunate we didn’t get to see more of Jeanine Mason before now. Luckily, I think we’ll get to see quite a bit more of her now that she’s in the SYTYCD top 20.

Paris Torres Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Check out a couple videos of Paris Torres before making the So You Think You Can Dance top 20. They aren’t the best videos, but give you a little idea of what Paris Torres dancing was like before SYTYCD.

Check out this practice video of Paris Torres before So You Think You Can Dance. Turns out that the discarded Kelsea Taylor is also in this video as well. Dancers (from left to right at beginning): Zsa Baysa Paris Torres Andrea Burr Kelsea Taylor Katelyn Rafter

Here’s what looks like the actual performance video with Paris Torres (and Kelsea Taylor) as well.

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t post Paris Torres original audition video so you can see the ballerina in action to the song “Toxic” Yael Naïm - Yael Naïm - Toxic by Yael Naim:

Janette Manrara Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Time to start posting some more videos of the dancers in the So You Think You Can Dance top 20 before they were on So You Think You Can Dance.  A nice way to start is with the beautiful Janette Manrara.

This is a nice little raw studio video of Janette Manrara showing that she’s not just good at partner dancing, but should be able to produce some amazing solos as well.

Here’s a mix of a number of different dances that Janette Manrara did before So You Think You Can Dance. Shows some good partnering and some solo work.

I’m not sure about the crazy outfit Janette has on in this video, but it’s another interesting look at Janette Manrara before SYTYCD. More proof of solo potential too.

Also, just for good measure here’s Janette Manrara’s inital audition video.  My favorite part is where she shows off her incredible muscles while she’s laying sideways through a series of moves.  Awesome!!

I should also mention that I’m glad Janette did something with her hair. It just wasn’t working for me in her audition.

So You Think You Can Dance Top 20 Rants

It’s now all official and we know who will be in the So You Think You Can Dance 2009 top 20. All over the web people are twittering about who they like, blogging about it, and commenting on blogs like mine. So, I might as well take a minute to write down a few of my rants (both good and bad) about the So You Think You Can Dance top 20.

Brandon Bryant – A lot of people are up in arms about Mia Michael’s comments to Brandon Bryant. Now you may remember that I said that Mia Michaels was a mean judge, but this time I’m actually backing Mia. Ok, she was a little over the top in her criticism but I think she was right. There’s something missing in Brandon’s performance in Las Vegas that’s not quite there.

Maybe it’s like his friend Natalie Reid who said that she couldn’t live up to her expectations. Brandon definitely can’t live up to the expectations of a crying Mary Murphy. However, for me I’m not sure it’s all about living up to expectations. I just think with certain styles of dance he’s going to have troubles and not blows us away like he did in his audition. Plus, he is a little bit arrogant in his ways. He’s not like Danny Tidwell arrogant, but just a touch of that maybe. Luckily unlike Danny Tidwell, when Brandon Bryant talks the arrogance doesn’t seem to come out. That’s a really good thing for him.

I also love the conspiracy theory someone suggested in the comments that maybe Mia Michaels was trying to avoid the Will Wingfield issue of being considered a judges favorite and having that hurt your chances with the vote. I don’t think Mia did that on purpose, but I definitely believe that Brandon Bryant will benefit from his fans voting extra for him thanks to Mia.

Ashley Valero – Can you say 4 times? That’s a lot of tryouts. I couldn’t be happier for her. Looking forward to see more of her dancing.

Alex Wong – Second to most heart breaking moment of the night. Whether you liked Alex Wong’s dancing or not you had to appreciate his desire to dance. It’s unfortunate that he wasn’t able to get out of his contract. I’m not calling for a boycott of his ballet company, but man it’s sad he went to all that work and now has to go home to only do ballet.

Kasprzak Brothers – Most heartbreaking moment of the night. I’m sure Fox wants ratings, but this was just cruel. “Worst nightmare” was an apt description. I also really hated that Nigel said they always thought they could only let one person with their style into this year’s top 20. That’s crap to me. You put in the best dancers. If they’re all contemporary then so be it. I hate to hear stuff like this.

I’ll admit that I ended up watching this episode twice already and as I sat back and just enjoyed it the second time, I was really excited to see so many of the dancers in the top 20. I don’t think this season is going to be the best one ever, but I also don’t think it will disappoint either. Plus, Wade Robson and Shane Sparks are BACKKKKK!!!! (in case you missed that news)
