So You Think You Can Dance Top 14 Music
Another week of So You Think You Can Dance is upon us. I’m actually traveling this week with my 2 children to give my 8 month pregnant wife a break from the children. Yes, this is going to be an interesting week for me. That’s also why I’m a little late in posting the music for this week’s SYTYCD. Better late than never no? As always, the latest SYTYCD music can be found here.
Now for the list of music used for the SYTYCD top 14.
Janette Manrara and Brandon Bryant danced a Cha-Cha-Cha to the song “Hush Hush” —The Pussycat Dolls choreographed by Jean-Marc Généreux
Kayla Radomski and Kupono Aweau danced a Contemporary to the song “Eyes On Fire” —Blue Foundation choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
Randi Evans and Evan Kasprzak danced a Broadway to the song “Rich Man’s Frug” from Sweet Charity choreographed by Joey Dowling
Caitlin Kinney and Jason Glover danced a Pop-Jazz to the song “Creator” —Santigold choreographed by Brian Friedman
Jeanine Mason and Phillip Chbeeb danced a Hip-hop to the song “Love Lockdown” —Kanye West choreographed by Tabitha D’umo and Napoleon D’umo
Melissa Sandvig and Ade Obayomi danced a Classical Pas de deux to the song Romeo & Juliet: Provofiev’s Suite (No.1 Op 64b, 6th Movement) —Orchestre De La Suisse Romande & Armin Jordan choreographed by Thordal Christensen
Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune danced a Quickstep to the song “Puttin’ on the Ritz” —Rufus Wainwright choreographed by Jean-Marc Généreux
The female dancer’s elimination montage is to the song “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson
The male dancer’s elimination montage is to the song “On Your Own” by Green River Ordinance
was it me, or did the sound kind of got weird during that show. o.o
We need a place to immediately discuss the Wed. show once it is over! Here’s what I think…
FINALLY, the SYTYCD I love is back. This week was everything I love about SYTYCD. All of the routines were interesting. I liked them all (and loved a few), but they were different, cool, unusual – all sorts of positive adjectives – and that is what I love about the show. The past two weeks have been rather boring, IMO, with only a few interesting dances. This week was GREAT!
I loved how choked up Brandon got after Mia’s comment. Can you imagine what a huge relief/honor that must have been for him. Totally cool.
I love Broadway and musicals in general, but generally hate those numbers on the show. However, I found this week’s quite interesting.
I also am normally not a fan of Jean Marc and his wife, but thought they did a great job making their dances interesting/relevant/great this week.
I can’t believe Philip got hip hop again. Lucky man. And I must say again that I love Nappytabs’ choreography.
Kayla and Kupono made a great pair this week. This is the first time I’ve actually liked him. In fact, this is the first week I don’t want him to go home. I can’t wait to see them again next week.
My BF has been a fan of Vitolio since the beginning, but I really didn’t like him much. However, this week and the last, he showed a lot more personality and drama in his performance. I really liked that. He seems like he’s becoming a much better performer and I can appreciate that. I can’t wait to see what he does next either.
Caitlin was okay; I wasn’t that convinced by her “leading” of the routine, but she wasn’t bad. I agree that the costuming was poor.
I HATED the lighting for Kayla and Kupono’s vampire routine. In past weeks, I have been really impressed with the way some of the lighting and costumes add to the performance, but this time I thought the lighting detracted from it. Blue is calm and peaceful (I didn’t really get “cold” from it) and the lighting was soft. I would have like to see sharpness, contrast, and red in the lighting. I was really expecting a great all around show for that one and was disappointed (not by the dancing or choreography though).
I think that’s pretty much everything. Oh – no – I hated how they did the “let’s look back”. It hasn’t been that long!!! There was no need to look back. I would have much preferred to learn something new about the contestants or seen more dancers or something. I mean, the rehashing of routines and judges comments was better than adding in a lame singer…but totally unecessary in my mind.
There, now I’m done!
Did anyone pay attention to Nigel in the early part of the show? He must of read the NYP article because he was acting weird. With the first comment of the night he did a bit of a Mary Murphy with his delivery and he even included a “Yes it was” in another performance I think. I thought it was hilarious.
Thanks for the songs a zillion times. 😀 Ah. Another week come and gone. I have to say this week picked up a little, and I’m glad.
Coming to Janette and Brandon cha cha cha. Simply love this couple. Maybe it’s too early to say it, but I think they’ll go a long way in this competition. Philip and Jeanine aside, these 2 are the closest couple that has both personality and technique compared to the previous seasons. Mia praised Brandon so much he choked up. Aww, I’m so psyched for him. He must have been waiting for so long to impress mia, and he did. The routine was hot of course, full of vibe and fun.
Kayla and kupono contemporary. Another unique routine from sonya again, I guess. Love her. These 2 have yet to show what they have, but I hope it’d be soon. Not sure if this routine will get votes. 😮 I like Kayla, but she has a way of holding herself that others may not like. I’m not sure what it is but I just feel it. or maybe it’s how perfect she is? Haha. But I think she’s totally gifted. 😮 ?
Randi and evan broadway. It was well executed, but it lack a little of their personalities which we usually see, so the routine doesn’t really shine through. And I’m not sure about this couple. I’m sure they’re great dancers, but they’ve not been getting the best choreography. As much as I liked the butt routine last week, it didn’t really show their strengths. They were just doing what they could do, nothing special or exceptional. that’s for me, I guess.
I’m worried for Caitlin and Jason. They are both exceptional dancers, but neither of their routines so far has stood out for me. They’ve been in the bottom 3 twice, who knows they might be in again this week. They haven’t showed outstanding personalities and I don’t know of jason’s fan base will be able to sustain him. Maybe this week’s routine might bring them through, I don’t know?
Jeanine and Philip hip hop. I don’t know if this 2 are lucky to get back both the same style and choreographers as they did the first week. It is pretty obvious that the expectations for them are a lot higher and that this routine, is definitely not as good as their first one. They might be in the bottom 3 this time, but with their fans, who knows?
Melissa and Ade classical pas de deux. These 2 have been getting really good styles and choreography. But I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse that Melissa got something her own forte. We all remember last yr katee and will’s pas de deux. not trying to take sides, but it was quite clear for me which was more memorable. Or probably because what Melissa and ade did was CLASSICAL pas de deux. nonetheless, it was okay. Ade may seem a little weak in this style in comparison to Melissa, which is not a good thing. Haven’t seen this couple fall yet, but we shall see.
Karla and vitolio quickstep. Love jean-marc’s choreography. I have a twinkling hope that it might save them this week, especially with the dress part. Now, THAT is memorable enough. Hopefully they pull through.
There goes my rant for the performance show. This week, although it was better than last week, I can’t really compare because this week’s performances are quite unique and different from usual. Not sure about what America likes in this area, so I can’t make any assumptions about who‘s going to be in the bottom 3, but I have a rough idea.
And I have to comment about Mary Murphy. I know many don’t like her because of her screams and hot tamale trains and the need to mute the TV when she’s critiquing. I don’t enjoy it, but I don’t hate it either. Mary herself is an icon of the show. The reason why she joined Nigel for the 2nd permanent judge is because she brings life to the show, and makes chemistry between the judges on the panel work. It apparently annoys some, but I don’t think the show would be the same without Mary on the panel, if you remember season 1 and 2. It’s not as fun and amusing. I mean, I think if people actually see past all the screaming, they will see a really lovely lady behind it. Maybe from there, the screams may not sound so horrible and may even be accepted. Her comments to the dancers are valuable and she and Nigel balance each other out, which is important as Nigel can be really harsh sometimes. Her screams personify her and I wouldn’t want to change that.
And I have to say that I’m totally psyched that Kelly Clarkson is performing on results show! 😀 she’s my favourite Idol of all. 😀
kelly clarkson’s singing i do not hook upon results show. love that song. but shouldn’t she sing already gone since that’s the song for the female elimination clip? 😮 but love her anyway.
So, I wanted to post last night about this, but my migraine forced me to watch the dances from bed. lol (hmmm…It’s probably bad that I think about posting here while laying in bed. The husband would probably not like that!!)
I, too, felt this was the best week of the season in terms of interesting and well danced pieces. I don’t think any couple did poorly this week.
Don’t know if you noticed, but at least one person in every couple, except Karla and Vitolio, got at least something approaching their own style–Phillip (hip hop), Caitlyn (jazz), Melissa (pointe), Jeanette (latin), Evan (broadway), Kayla/Kupono (contemporary)…kinda cool. I like it. My thoughts:
1. Phillip and Jeanine killed it. Best hip hop of the season. Sharp unison, hard-hitting, unique. That type of dance makes everyone want to dance that way. I can’t say enough, either, how much more difficult that style of hip hop must be for someone used to free-flowing street dance, like Phillip. He had to hit everything–sharp and in unison. They both were unreal.
2. Melissa and Ade: well, they’re my favorites, so I have to reveal that up front, lol. Melissa is a dream–I cannot tell you how excited I was to finally see pointe shoes on SYTYCD. Classical ballet gives me chills when it’s danced appropriately–and this was believable and beautiful. Ade surprised me. Contemporary dancers have to contort their bodies in different ways than ballet requires. Nigel was right about his carriage in this dance. Katie was my fav last season…and I felt that this pas de deux trumped last year’s because it brought classical to the people–and it didn’t have the contemporary feel that people would automatically connect with. I’m so very appreciative!
3.Jeanette and Brandon: Wow. Can we say a professional routine? Brandon brought it and deserved the kind words from Mia. I was very entertained by this routine–and they looked awesome. I felt Brandon finally showed some genuine emotion, too…which I appreciated. He’s so friggin’ good….
4. Kayla/Kupono: very cool contemporary. I don’t agree with Mia that this was Sonya’s best number ever (I liked the “Garden” piece last year more), but they killed it. Kupono FINALLY reached his potential. Finally! Kayla’s ALWAYS gorgeous, but together, this time, they were great.
5. Caitlyn and Jason: I am ticked at the costumers. They did Caitlyn DIRTY. She didn’t even look cute (and she’s GORGEOUS). I’m ticked about that because I felt that Caitlyn finally started to bring the fire–and had a routine that forced her to do so–but the costumers made her look cartoonish. I know you die-hard Caitlyn fans (you know who you are, lol) have got to be livid if I am!!! I am afraid that the costuming could put them in the bottom again…unfortunately.
6. Evan and Randi: I think that they end up in the bottom this week due to process of elimination and the fact that they didn’t quite kill the Fosse. I’ve seen the Bob Fosse tribute off-Broadway and they didn’t completely kill it as they should. But with that said–it was a very very difficult style to adapt…it may not look like it, but Fosse is both legendary and difficult, so there’s a lot to live up to. Bummer.
7. Karla and Vitolio: This week sux because everyone was good…and their quickstep was better than most (I loved the costuming here….which makes no sense considering how they dropped the ball with Caitlyn). But their personalities haven’t won over as many as they should, based on their dancing. I felt that Vitolio reached down into himself and brought some personality, and Karla was as consistent as ever, but I don’t know if it will be enough.
I think we say goodbye to Karla and Vitolio this week…unless someone like Jason doesn’t take the advice from last week and dances desperately.
Sorry for the long comments…but I love this site and I have to share. lol 🙂
Oh, and buggy, I agree about both Mary and Kelly Clarkson–Mary is Mary, and at least she’s got great things to say. 🙂 She can be a bit annoying sometimes, but I love her. lol (My husband feels otherwise!!!)
And Kelly is my favorite Idol too. 🙂
I agree with beth regarding Caitlyn. The costume was ridiculous. I hope she and Jason are not in the bottom 3 again.
Fave routine was Jeanine and Phillip’s Tabolean piece. Jeanine has really impressed me. Moves very well, and seems up to all the different dance styles.
Also, very nice to see Melissa dancing her own style.
Has anyone else noticed that some couples seem to be getting similar styles every week (like Evan/Randi and Philip/Jeanine)? Also, there’s NO way the pulling of styles is random, if Melissa and Ade got ballet. I’d like to see some of the couples get a style really different to the ones they’ve gotten so far (ie Evan/Randi getting crump or bollywood) – some couples haven’t shone as much perhaps because they haven’t been really given the opportunity. Otherwise, I agree that last night was much better in the way of memorable dances and the “good old days” of the show.
Hmmm…I think I have to disagree, Kimberly. There are different reports of people who have been to tapings…some have said that the drawings are definitely random, and others have not. I’m guessing we’ll never really know. But I don’t think they’re trying to benefit certain people, per se. But maybe I’m just not one for conspiracies, who knows! 🙂
With that said, Melissa getting her style was pretty crazy. Though I imagine that if Melissa hadn’t gotten that draw, it wouldn’t have been danced en pointe. It didn’t seem to matter if it was or wasn’t in terms of the choreography–though the pointe shoes did make it ever so much more interesting.
I don’t think Evan and Randi nor Philip/Jeanine got similar styles every week–I mean, Philip and Jeanine had the tango and broadway, remember? Neither of those are their own styles. And Evan and Randi had jive, which wasn’t their style either. I think every pair has had a chance to shine…just some haven’t taken them. I think the biggest disappointment has been the hip hip…couples have gotten some GREAT hip hop choreography–dances they could have killed like last year’s No Air and Bleeding Love, but they didn’t.
Great job getting the full name of the piece that Melissa & Ade danced too! Longest song information ever on So You Think You Can Dance! When I tried to pause my DVR to get the full title, the controls would block it.
You do an awesome job with this, many thanks!
Can I just say that I love these music recaps? Whenever I hear these songs again, it just reminds me of the dances. Now I don’t have to search them online! 🙂
I have to agree with the chorus of people loving all the routines. They were great. Kudo’s to all the dancers. For me, I felt the best were Janette&Brandon, Karla&Vitolio (haha, don’t kill me) and Jeanine&Philip while I didn’t enjoy the Kayla&Kupono and Evan&Randi (I don’t understand their hype :() as much as the others. Still, I’m a really skewed judge because I know very little about technique and base a lot of “America’s favorite dancer” on versatility and personality. 🙂
After seeing the results show, i was just reminded about how suspenseful the entire thing really was. No one was really safe! Even the EvanRandi and KarlaVitolio thing had me guessing. I know ER is popular, but I thought that KV outdanced them.
On that note, here’s to further great dancing on SYTYCD this season! 🙂
Hi webmaster or anybody that can help:
The song that Janette and Brandon danced to called “Hush Hush by The Pussycat Dolls” must be a remix/dance version.
Can somebody please help identify the remix/dance version of the song? The original song by The Pussycat Dolls is slow, not as fast as it was on the show.
Dancefan, when I looked up the Pussycat Dolls song, the faster ones were called “2.0 Remix” or “I Will Survive Remix” or just “Hush Hush/I Will Survive.” I definitely like it better faster!
Stephanie:
Aaaahhh, I googled what you told me and found the song. Thanks a lot girl 🙂
Thanks Stephanie. I have the best readers of this blog. They are so much better with music than I am.
Looks like that remix isn’t available on iTunes or Amazon though.
who can tell me the music in season5ep12 s5 00:38:24 it’s so passionate“` who can help me
like this music so much
Clavin…do you know who was dancing to the music? The songs are all listed by dancers, as you can see. 🙂
Time for my late responses since I was a little out of commission this week.
Gretchen,
I’ll create a post next week where people can discuss the upcoming show. This weeks routines were so much better. A nice mix of everything I love about the show. The pairings are starting to come together as well.
Is it just me or does Mia’s comments about Brandon feel forced? I think the still feels the same way about him, but just chose to say the nicest things she could possibly say about him, but it didn’t change what she said previously. I think Brandon still bugs her. I think I’ll do a post on just this to see what people say.
The look back was good for me since I was visiting family and they hadn’t been watching the previous episodes. I called them to repentance for that;-)
Beth,
I won’t tell your husband that you’re thinking about posting on this site while in bed if you don’t tell my wife;-) Bed is where I come up with my best ideas for this site. I came up with a few last night. We’ll see how they turn out.
To All,
Glad you like the music recaps. We’ll keep them coming. If I get a free second at some point I’ll create a page that links to all of the SYTYCD music recaps. I think people would appreciate that. Plus, you could see the amazing list of music. It really is something else.
I’ll be more active this week. I’m back in business, but exhausted from a week with my children and vacation and no wife. My wife and the house look refreshed, so I guess it was worth it.
The song by the pussycat dolls is Hush Hush; Hush Hush
