Something New for Season 6?
Nigel had recently tweeted about a new idea for this season of SYTYCD, a show that introduces the top 20 to America. He had said that it will be just a performance show, no competition just allowing the dancers to dance without pressure; the idea came from SYTYCD Australia. He also mentioned they most like will perform in groups based on their strength. I think he also hinted that maybe some tappers made the top 20…okay I have to admit this makes me excited to know that we may see some tap this season.
I actually like this idea. Giving all the dancers a chance to show America what they can really do and why they are in the top 20. Also it gives viewers a chance to see some of the dancers we didn’t see much during the audition process. Just something that I found interesting and would love to know what you think about this new idea…because I have a feeling it just might happen.
I am loving this idea.
I remember when they were picking the top 20 last season – for some of the people, I was like huh? who?
I’m pretty sure we didn’t even see Jeanine’s audition (which I guess didn’t matter:)
I’m hoping this idea will open up people’s minds to other dancers in the top 20, so some dancers won’t have an unfair advantage because they were heavily showcased in auditions and such – and dancers who are amazing but maybe didn’t get the airtime won’t get booted just because they dont have a built in fan base.
I’m excited for this to happen, so hopefully it does!
ooh, that sounds great. when i heard about this, i thought it would be all back-stories and such. but performances would be even better, since that’s a large part of why we vote for them. and it’s true, when the first couple goes, we no virtually nothing about them, even if they were featured in auditions/vegas. yea!
For some reason this season I haven seen any one truely grab my attention…thats why I am excited about this. Other than the Tappers the guy that had toured with Ryan was a favorite of mine…lol…wish I could remember his name. Other than that I have been focused on tryin to spot the girl I know…Katheryn(she is the one who tripped up the stairs to get het ticket…lol) They haven’t shown too much of her yet…so I am hoping that will mean good news.
Wow it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve finally caught up. Was recently in Chicago and watched my first SYTYCD performance on tour! ^_^
I was a bit shocked at a lot of the Vegas cuts but i’m looking forward to next week. And where is Natalie Reid??
I’m glad that they are going to showcase the top 20 individually without pressure. However a lot of the editing is going to play a significant part in how each person is portrayed. Sometimes people want to see an arrogant one or the inspirational one. It’s really up in the air. Although it does level the playing field (dancing field?) a bit since we’ll be able to compare each dancer accordingly.
It makes me wonder if Jeanine was given this opportunity, would she have won?
My grown kids and I have discussed the opportunity we may have to get to see the top 20 more equally this year. We all think it’s a good idea.
As I’m sure you know, after season 5 and the LACK of dancers who were able to “get into character”, thus making most of the dances quite boring compared to other seasons, we are praying that you are putting a “spotlight” on the dancers who actually HAVE this incredible ability. I’m sure that anyone who watches each season, noticed what a dud 5 was. BUT WE LOVE YOU ANYWAY…and have faith you will step up to the plate this season.
So, in an effort to get the true “feel” of the top 20, instead of just a few of your favorites, it would be GREAT to get to know a little more regarding their true dancing “style” and “personality”. Good Luck for ALL our sakes!! My grown son and daughter-in-law and my grown daughter all watch the show and enjoy sharing it with each other and bouncing critiques off of one another. Love you ALL!!
@Amanda: Ryan’s friend from the Fosse tour (and roommate) is Phillip Attmore. He auditioned in L.A. as well.
@Christine: I think Jeanine still would’ve won, she just oozes personality. But you bring up a good point because Jeanine’s appeal built week after week, while we got to watch her blossom dancing with Philip. Maybe she would’ve come off differently, maybe not. But go back and watch the interview video posted last season of Jeanine and Evan and you can see she’s got that same humongous personality right from the beginning.
@all: I’m excited by a pressure-free performance episode, as well. I think things might’ve been different for Paris particularly if this had been in effect last season.
Emilie:
I agree that watching her interview with Evan had showcased her personality. Actually after watching it I really started to research her more because her interaction with Evan was so genuine. It was more that she played off of his reaction and was generally interested in what he was saying more than just an interview about them. So yes, I guess she still would have won 🙂 Although I think if I had seen Janette’s talent in contemporary (like that solo with the chair) I think I would have voted for Janette too. I knew she had the personality but I had no idea she was capable of doing a lot of the contemporary moves than what the choreographers gave her. Sure she was limited compared to the other contemporary dancers, but she was still fantastic.
And yes Maybe my opinion for Tony and Jonathon Platero would have been a little different had I seen them dance their style a little more. All I saw were tricks and showy things but not dancing based on the Vegas and solo/ dance for your life segments.
I think not only Paris, but Ashley could have used more air time.
Geez, I watched Nathan Trasoras on youtube and i believe this kid is gonna be in the top 20 for sure… He’s fantastic.
i think a top 20 pure show, no judging sounds great! i’ve been super busy with school but have tried to catch up on the audition episodes i’ve missed and i agree, there has been some great dancing but not a lot of personalities who have jumped out at me. i was a big kayla fan last year, and i think she was one of those “too little personality, too late” cases. i have friends who danced with her, and they say she oozes personality, just not in the typical ways. so i’m definitely in favor of a top 20 episode. who knows, if they had done this last year maybe tony and jonathan and ashley would have stayed a little longer.
NIGEL – I hope you are reading these!!! (We can dream, right?). This is the BEST idea and many of us have been thinking SYTYCD should do this for a long time. Seriously, it is so lame that 2 people’s adventure ends after only one dance. I mean, everyone can have a bad dance at some point and it is a pity that they are kicked off right away because of it. We need time to see them dance, get a sense of their range, etc. PLEASE let us have at least one (if not two or three!) nights of watching them just dance. Then we can start eliminating.
And, while I’m putting my requests out there, CAN SYTYCD PLEASE STOP “previewing” each segment before commercials? This is the stupidest practice and I hate TV shows that have adopted it. I mean, seriously, I don’t need a preview of the best parts to come and then have to watch them again. If someone put an end to this ridiculous practice, we could see so much more dancing. It drives me crazy!!!
I’ve got another idea as well. I think we need a SYTYCD Individuals show. This would be for all those amazing hip hop/poppers/street dancers (and others) who are phenomenal at their style, but can’t cut it with a partner and/or choreography. It would be kind of a like an America’s Best Dance Crew, but without the “crew”. Then we could see all these amazing dancers (like Philip from last season) in their element.
Thanks Emile I couldn’t remember his name for some reason.
To All: It seems like this idea is going to happen. Nigel has gotten feedback over twitter. I think it is more about what is going to happen in the show.
Just so you all know–the Top 20 Introduction show HAS been confirmed, as far as I know. It’s been put into a lot of scheduling for TV on the internet.
And concerning Jeanine–I feel like her chances would have been slimmer if they had introduced her. Part of her magic was that she was so unknown, that the audience was really a part of her journey to the top. People related to her–I don’t even want to think about changing Season 5 at all, because I thought Jeanine deserved the win, and anything else that might had gone different could’ve changed the end result.
And to all you people who didn’t like Season 5, I say “shame on you” because I loved it. <3 Five alive forever.
