Rotating SYTYCD Judge is Back and Adam Shankman is Off as Permanent Judge

I just found the video below where Nigel Lythgoe and Cat Deeley talk about SYTYCD 2011 and how the judges will work on season 8 of SYTYCD. Nigel says that the rotating judge is back for SYTYCD 2011. Adam Shankman is busy filming a big movie and so Nigel says he’s not available to be there every week. That leaves Nigel and Mary (I wish it was Toni instead of Mary) as the permanent, every week judges and then a third rotating judge.

The rotating SYTYCD judge will likely be the choreographers from the show, but Nigel leaves it open to other people. For example, I’m sure Nigel would welcome someone like a Paula Abdul as a guest judge, but I think she’s going to be busy with X Factor. Unless she’s a guest judge as a way to promote X Factor. That could be interesting.

Of course, I’ve always thought that Nigel should bring a fan judge on. Maybe a popular SYTYCD blogger as a guest judge would be pretty interesting I think.

i’m pretty sure i read somewhere that the rotating judges will be tyce, toni, lil c, jason gilkison, adam, robin…something. and maybe one more.
i think i’m in the minority that will miss mia as a judge. a lot of people didn’t like her, but i did, she’s honest, she doesn’t hold back, and she knows what she wants, that’s what the dancers need.
i hope she’ll at least be doing some choreography. the season is always a little lacking without some mia magic.

He is filming “Rock of Ages” in Miami and Mia Micheals is choreographing…she tweeted that today so we will not be seeing her this season. Though Adam did say he would make an appearance.

You Jennifer Lopez would be a great guest judge. Plus I would be cool to see other choreographers on the panel…like Tyce, Nappytabs, Stacie Tookey….ect

nappytabs and stacey tookey would be GREAT judges, I like them as the judges in the audition episodes.

i’m glad it’s mary and not toni as the permanent judge. seeing mary back makes me realize how much i missed her

I’m sure we’ll see Adam at some point. Just not every week. I’ll be surprised if we see Mia at all. She seems to have said enough with SYTYCD. Not sure why though.

I love Stacey Tookey as a judge as well. I think she’s always spot on. However I’d rather have her and Nappytabs choreographing than judging.

lfytheny, you’re entitled to your opinion. Even if it’s wrong;-) Actually I just disagree with you. However, I think there’s a lot of people who agree with you.

    Hey John,

You need to get out more and also possibly read more SYTYCD news on the ‘Net. Your article is OLD news in the Dance world.

So happy that they changed back to this format I enjoyed having someone new every week on the panel in seasons before. I think I also read somewhere that Debbie Allen would be back as well.

    John KC,
This isn’t a breaking dance news site. I actually did see about Adam a while ago, but never got around to posting it. Plu, someone had asked on Twitter, so I figured I’d answer with a post when I stumbled across the video.

    Ryan,
I agree. I like the rotating judge format. One more thing to look forward to each week.

although i’m glad to see mary back, i agree i will miss mia’s critiques. even though she could be harsh, her comments were interesting and beneficial.

I think it was too much Mia when she was a permanent judge, but I enjoy having her on the rotating panel. Although, I think she’s gone.

@JohnKC: We’re much interested in rooting out all the SYTYCD music and fun discussions than getting the edge on the news, since there are some great sites that do that. So we generally post what we think folks will have fun talking about. I hope you enjoy what we do and keep coming back.

@John: As for a fan judge…I can just see you and Mary sitting next to each other and her hollering in your ear. :)

@Everyone: I like the rotating judges. I’m glad Mary’s back and I’ll miss Mia a lot, but I agree that it was getting a big stagnant with the same judges every week. I think that’s the beauty of the Canadian SYTYCD. Two permanent judges and 1-2 rotating guest judges. There’s always some familiarity and always some freshness.

Hi guys, I know this is probably a funny place to post this, but the season finale of ABDC was on Sunday night, where S3′s Dominic is a judge, and the winning group was founded by none other than S5′s Phillip!!! check out mtv.com for more details! look at these SYTYCD alums!! Congrats to Phillip and IamMe!

thank God Adam won’t be there every week….he bugs me! i would love to see past dancers as judges!

  14. # John commented on June 8th, 2011:

Thanks for the update Margaret. I haven’t had time to watch ABDC much lately. I’m glad to hear that Philip did so well. How was Dominic as a judge?

    Glory,
Some past dancers could be interesting. They just might be too easy on them since they know what it’s like to be in the other’s shoes.

Once my life settles down a bit I’ll do a full post about it, there are some pretty amazing videos online of Philip and his crew. Dominic was great as a judge, his sense of humor hasn’t changed at all :) and he was able to bring a new type of critique to the judging panel having been a contestant and a performer.
