SYTYCD rumblings
What a great show last night!! I sprinkled my thoughts here and there on other posts but overall I was really impressed. I thought I’d bring you all a smattering of SYTYCD news that I’ve seen over the past couple of weeks. Much of it comes from our friends at Entertainment Weekly
*added 6/24
I haven’t had the chance to read some of your comments about the results last night, but Kate Ward, a writer at EW.com has written an article aptly titled, “SYTYCD results make fans angry. you won’t like them when they’re angry”
I have to admit, I was pretty annoyed to see them keep Ryan after her abysmal “dance for your life”. I was watching the live feed online and it shorted out so I missed Missy’s and Iveta’s but from what I’ve heard Iveta’s was better. I saw all the guys and I thought Ricky really made his case to stay, his solo was great. Frankly, it’s not his fault Ryan seems to rather look at the camera and mug than connect with him. One of the posters recommended that they should have let all three girls and one of the boys go and kept Nick and Ricky or Nick and Wadi. I agree that Nick had a great personality and I would have loved to have seen him do contemporary with his long limbs to really see what he can do.
thoughts on this? I think it’s pretty interesting…

They’ve recently released their list of the 25 greatest SYTYCD performances of the past 7 seasons.
25. Kathryn and Ryan’s cha-cha (Season 6)
24. Pasha and Sara’s “Rockafella Skank” (Season 3)
23. Lauren and Twitch’s “My Chick Bad” (Season 7)
22. Lacey and Kameron Week 1 (Season 3)
21. Jakob and Ashleigh’s “Hit Me With a Hot Note” (Season 6)
20. Tranji’s “Gyrate” (Season 2)
19. Melody and Nick’s “All That Jazz”
18. Ellenore and Jakob’s “Tore My Heart”
17. Jeanine and Jason “If It Kills Me”
16. Brandon and Jeanette’s Disco
15. Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood
14. Jaimie and Hok’s “Hummingbird and the Flower”
13. Robert and Allison’s “Fix You”
12. Brandon and Jeanette’s “Ruby Blue”
11. Chelsie and Mark’s “Bleeding Love”
10. Ade and Billy’s “Mad World”
9. Danny and Lacey’s “Hip Hip Chin Chin”
8. Allison and Ivan’s “Why”
7. Kayla and Kupono’s “Addiction (Gravity)”
6. Heidi and Benji’s “Black Mambo”
5. Allison and Alex’s “Hallelujah”
4. Neil and Sabra’s “80’s Power Lunch (the table dance)”
3. Travis and Heidi’s “The Bench”
2. Katee and Joshua’s “No Air”
1. Alex and Twitch’s “Outta Your Mind”
This is a pretty stellar list, I must say, but there are a few glaring omissions. Where is Will and Katee’s spectacular pas de deux from season 4? Or Kayla and Max’s incredible WEEK 1 samba from season 5? I know this doesn’t include solos, but I don’t think anyone has topped Blake’s amazing solo from top 6 week in season 1, I’ve rewound it 100 times at least and still can’t figure out how he switches directions in his back handspring!
any other routines that didn’t make the cut?
in other news, they’ve also written an article asking if people think Alex Wong should be an All Star this year. The argument is that his presence might actually overshadow some of the S8 dancers. Even though he was only on the show for 3 weeks last season, which is so hard to believe, you can tell that he made a huge impact. What do you guys think? Any inklings on who you think the All Stars will be this season? I’m throwing in my early vote for Jakob from S6, Kayla and Brandon from S5 and Will from S4.
in case you needed any proof, here are some reasons why…you’re welcome 😉
kayla’s 1st solo
brandon’s finale solo (go to 2:15)
will & jessica’s “dance w/ the shirt” (will’s leaps, holy cow)
jakob and kathryn’s contemporary by desmond and dwight (now that I think about it, how was THIS one not on the list? it’s spectacular!)
Ahh… I loved Neil and Kent’s “Where It Ends.” Sad it didn’t make the cut :/
I would add:
Jeanine & Philip – Mad (Hip-Hop)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2UCUD6lFFo
Jakob & Mollee – Ordinary Day (Viennese Waltz)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiXe1NkxfuY
Twitch & Katee – Mercy (Contemporary)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhrxfHCtMJA
Evan & Randi – Koop Island Blues (Contemporary)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY8aPKhlL24
Courtney & Mark – The Garden (Jazz)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R3bLE1CiFs
Honorable mention to Brandon & Janette’s Argentine Tango

Also agree with Neil and Kent’s – Where It Ends. That was excellent.
Finally, since there’s been discussion of solos, just thought I’d toss Legacy’s “Flashing Lights” solo in there
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1x4WAXiXE8&feature=related
The quickest, smoothest and most dynamic and musical b-boy solos I’ve seen. It’s unreal what he does there.
I want Sara Von Guillern to be an All-star so badly!!! She’s the only other girl hip-hopper they’ve had, and i honestly liked her better than Comfort. She was so much more versatile.
Please come back Saraaaaa!
and I’m surprised Mia’s Time piece wasn’t on there. Didn’t it win an emmy?
Hard to argue much with that list – and it’s fun to go back and see some of the “famous” dances that were from before I tuned into the program.
Just wondering where you got your list of the EW Top 25 Best SYTYCD Performances.
I was wondering about Mia’s Time piece as well and Tyce DiOrio’s breast cancer piece as well. Travis Wall is a great choreographer and I hope to see more of him this season while the fact that they have brought Chris Scott on to choreograph is wonderful. Have you checked out The LXD?
@Bella, the list was on the EW.com website with accompanying pictures and links.
I didn’t event think about Mia’s “Time” piece, that’s a really good point a bunch of you guys have brought up. In terms of Tyce’s breast cancer piece, here’s the quote from Adam B. Vary, the EW writer who covers SYTYCD and helped pick the list: “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen two dancers throw themselves so deeply into a SYTYCD routine, let alone a SYTYCD routine that so expertly explored a subject as pitiless and unsentimental as addiction. I suspect it was that very rawness that muted the judges from their usual paroxysms of praise, but no matter. This remains for me the best routine of the disappointing fifth season because it had it all: choreography that challenged its performers, felt fully connected to the music underneath it, and told a complete, cohesive story; and dancers who delivered nuanced performances filled with aching emotion and technically stunning movement. If this reads like a justification for why this Mia Michaels routine is on this list and Tyce Diorio’s quite-good-if-overpraised-by-the-judges ”Cancer” routine isn’t, well, that’s just an agreeable coincidence. —ABV
Glaring omissions for me…
Kent and Neil’s “How It Ends”
Katee and Joshua’s “Hometown Glory”
Katee and Twitch’s “Mercy”
Jessica and Will’s “Silence” (didn’t it win an Emmy??)
Ellenore and Legacy’s “Machine Gun”
Courtney and Mark’s “The Garden” (HELLO???)
(Admittedly, S4 is my fave season and if I had my way half the list would be Katee and/or Katee/Joshua, lol.)
Still, thrilled to see my other all-time favorite dances – “No Air” (#2 woo!!!), “Gravity,” “Why,” and “Mad World” – on the list!
Oh, and I meant to say that I think it would be wonderful for Alex to be an All-Star. I’ve been saying that all along! 🙂 I never thought it would be fair for him to be a contestant again, but All-Star would be great and well-deserved.
have people forgotten melody & nick’s disco in season 1???
@edwin, oh my gosh! thank you for reminding me! I knew there was another dance from S1 that I was bummed wasn’t on the list but I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was. that disco was amazing!!
@kenna Itotally agree!!! I love Sara and I think she would be an awesome all-star!
@ahs I cannot believe they did not add in “The Garden” and “Mercy.” Haven’t they repeated those at least three times??? I also agree with “Machine Gun” being on that list. That was DANCING!
I really think that list was pro-Alex Wong, and I thought at least a few of those routines should of beat “Outta Your Mind” for first place.
I’m THRILLED that Alex and Twitch are number 1! I want to learn that routine so badly!
Does anybody know why they didn’t mention Iveta was in Season 5?
