SYTYCD Canada – Finale Performance Show
Tonight was the final performance show of the season.
Lindsey & Matt
Hip-Hop – ShoTyme
“Like That” – Memphis Bleek
This was energetic, hard hitting and fun. I really enjoyed watching it and thought it was a great start to the show.
Jordan & Christian
Contemporary – Stacey Tookey
“All in Love is Fair” – Stevie Wonder
This was a powerful piece about a chance encounter between past lovers who relive a moment. I thought it was moving and pretty. There was a near-miss on a lift that scared me but they recovered well.
Melissa & Shane
Salsa – Gustavo Vargas
“Salsa y Sabor” – Tito Puente
This had some serious lifts, twists, spins and tricks. BOTH of them did some crazy flips and it ended with an amazing one-legged lift by Shane pulling Melissa over him, amazing!
Girls Routine
Mia Michaels
“What About Us” – ATB
This was, hands down, my most favourite routine of the season, and maybe ever. It was absolutely crazy-good. I will post it for everyone to see because it truly was THAT awesome!
Guys Routine
Melissa Williams
“We Will Rock You” – Queen
After the girl’s routine this simply wasn’t up to par. It was fun, the guys did lifts and tricks and moved well, but the girl’s was just that much better! Christian really stood out fo rme in this routine.
SOLOS
Shane“Fancy Footwork” – Choremo
Another amazing solo from Shane. I really find him the strongest of the male dancers.
Melissa“Commander” – Kelly Rowland
She was amazing, so much power and energy, when she dances she commands attention. She has been consistently great this whole season and I will not be surprised if she wins.
Lindsey“Beautiful” – Me’Shell Ndegeocello
Easily the most growth this season. Her solo showed such maturity and commitment, I had goosebumps watching her dance.
Matt“Ain’t No Sunshine” – Bill Withers
For me the most improved male dancer. I am surprised he is still around over some of the other dancers, but he is holding his own and his solo was very good.
Christian“Beautiful People” – Chris Brown
I often forget he is ballroom because he really does so well in every genre thrown at him. I appreciated his upbeat solo that was ballroom but very fluid and fun.
Jordan“This Woman’s Work” – Greg Laswell
Jordan was my pick to win since auditions. I adore her and I will stick to my decision for her to win, her solo was amazing, her dancing all season has been consistently great.
POWER RANKINGS
This is tough. I am ultimately voicing my predictions for the win….
Since day ONE I have been a Jordan fan, and even though Melissa has quickly crept up on (and at times even surpassed) Jordan, I am going to stick with Jordan to win. Melissa a close second (or if I am wrong, Melissa will win and Jordan a close second) I guess there are two ways to do this – MY OPINION and what I THINK CANADA’S OPINION WILL BE….
Mandy’s Thoughts:
1 – Jordan
2 – Melissa
3 – Lindsey
4 – Shane
5 – Christian
6 – Matt
Prediction based on Canada’s Votes:
1 – Melissa
2 – Jordan
3 – Christian
4 – Matt
5 – Lindsey
6 – Shane
WHY ARE THEY SO DIFFERENT?
Because, I think Canada, like USA SYTYCD, sometimes gets it wrong, or some dancers simply have more fan support for whatever reason. This is why the “winner” is called “favourite dancer” not “best dancer” at the end.
We often see the same fantastic dancers keep getting bottom 3, while some less talented dancers stick around week after week. Every season of every SYTYCD it happens. Of course, we all have different opinions on what we like, but that is how it goes.
For example, I think Joey should be in the finale, within Top 3 to be honest, but he is gone. I also thought Denitsa stuck around way too long. I could go on, but I won’t.
For the Comments….
Give me your Power Rankings, Also comment on any past results, who should have gone sooner or stayed longer?
FINALE – SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 on CTV
For me
Melissa
Shane
Lindsay
Matt
Jordan
Christian
Based on last night’s performances, that is how I rank them. It may not be how Canada votes, or it could be, if people take last night’s performances away as their last impression of the dancers.
Melissa and Shane were on fire. Matt and Lindsay did an OK Hip Hop, but Jordan and Christian really dropped the ball. They were off on more than just the lift and they knew it. Jordan did a great solo, but Christian gave us nothing new on his.
If Melissa or Shane take this, I will be happy. I loved this team ever since their contemporary in week 2.
solos-
1. lindsey – always easily the best in my opinion
2. jordan – she has incredible flexibility and although her solo was amazing, i preferred lindsey’s because jordan’s was too jam-packed for me
3. melissa – neat
4. shane – always good
5. matt – i was surprised not to rank him last. i actually really enjoyed his solo
6. christian- this was horrible. he just kinda scooted around.
duets-
1. melissa and shane
2. lindsey and matt
3. jordan and christian
WHO WILL WIN???????
ideally, i would like lindsey to win. she has never had a bad preformance, always has incredible solos, and has grown immensely! but i think either jordan, melissa or shane will take it, which would still be OK with me, seeing as they’re incredible. i think jordan and melissa could split the vote and lindsey come up the middle, but i doubt it.
the wild card could also be matt. he’s never been in the bottom and the maritimes will be voting for him in droves. but compared to the others, i will NOT be happy if he wins.
For me, Lindsay is a very pretty dancer, but there is a sameness about her solos that is not really challenging technically. Melissa on the other hand is like a female Alex Wong, putting two directional pirouettes in a routine, or a 540 in another, or one armed fouettes in another, the technique is a master class. So much dance into 30seconds, she slays it every time.
Melissa is the only dancer, in any SYTYCD, in any country, to get a standing ovation for each and every partner routine ( should ad that standing O’s did not come easy and her partners would not have experienced them were it not for her). That has never been done, and probably a feat not to be repeated any time soon. It got to the point that I started getting anxious for the day she would not get a standing O. And despite my feelings of sooner or later she’ll come down to earth and not get a standing O, SHE NEVER DID. AND….SHE TRIED OUT EACH AND EVERY YEAR UNTIL SHE MADE IT ( without a crying fit after the failing only 2 yrs in row – Jayme Rae’s sister Jenny ). 8 standing O’s this year after getting cut the first three years and coming back stronger, if that doesn’t scream WINNER, take me to the psych ward. Please Canada, reward a winning attitude!! Fingers crossed. Other 2 girls were great, but Melissa was spectacular each and every week.
That Salsa put Melissa over the top for me – and I was rooting for Jordan last week.
I forget – has Melissa mentioned a background in Salsa before? Because she made that comment about having waited for the style, and the way she danced it… well, she didn’t look like a beginner. And she didn’t nod like Shane did when JM said something about them being out of their styles…
Oh, and I still think Lindsay puts together the best solos – out of any of the competitors, not just the girls. But that just makes her the best budding choreographer of the bunch, not necessarily my favorite dancer. 😉
Melissa likes to Salsa as one of her hobbies according to her bio. All of this cross training in Highland Dancing get the spring and power in her jumps, and now the Salsa style makes her just overall very strong in this competition. She ate up Gustavo’s choreography better than the female Ballroom dancers on the show, because of course social salsa isn’t Ballroom. She has the appropriate earthiness in the style and flow that’s not the same in Latin Ballroom. Not to say that Ballroom dancers can’t pick up the style, because they can and they do much easier than a contemporary dancer would, but it takes a little longer than the few days they have to rehearse to shake off the more formal styling and placement required in Latin Ballroom. We could see that in Gustavo’s Samba choreo for Denista and Christian. While Gustavo wanted them to get more Brazilian in the movement, they tended to slide back into the Ballroom and not really dance his vision. It became less successful as a choreographed piece, even though the International Latin Samba that was danced was first rate.
I just wanted to add, that for me, if Alex Wong is the most versatile male dancer of all in his brief time on SYTYCD, Melissa is probably the most versatile female dancer that I have seen on any SYTYCD stage in Canada and the US. I think it’s her ability to be authentic in each style, hip hop, contemporary and ballroom that makes her great. While girls like Kayla Radomski had excellent moments (eg in ballroom Samba) Mollee Gray (Viennese Waltz) or Janette Manara as a great Salsa dancer had some strong dancing in other styles out of her genre, Melissa Mitro sustains the style all the way through the piece to the point where you think she’s always danced the genre.
