Boston Auditions Thoughts

This week Amanda and Rachel chimed in with their thoughts about the SYTYCD Boston Auditions. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts in the comments. Also, be sure to check out the SYTYCD Boston Audition music post.

Amanda’s Thoughts:

It’s so good to see Adam Shankman back on the judging panel. He has always been one of my favorite judges. I think he was my favorite comic relief for the night with the Lamp Dance was a great moment and I’m so glad he made it to Vegas 😉 The girl I thought deserved to at least go to the choreography round.

Day One: I think the biggest stories of the day were the two brothers who were there for there sisters. The 16 year old  that stood in for his sister’s missing partner,  was really good, especially to learn that dance in three hours.  I thought the judges were just going to judge him and not his sister.  Now the brother who paid for the trip his sister Jennie was fabulous.

The other standouts for me were the ballroom couple that were the first to audition and the ballerina turned jazz dancer.

Day Two: Bring on the familiar faces…I’ll be honest I didn’t recognize all of them but I’m glad they come back to give it another shot…well almost all of them.

E-Knock: when they showed his initial audition I remembered exactly who he was. What a moving story to produce a powerful performance. Wish he was able to make it through to Vegas.

Alexis.. I love tap dancers. I’m always happy to see them go straight to Vegas.

Anthony B: oh boy not sure about this guy, he is a great dancer and I thought his attitude had improved but guess not…lol.

Anthony S: just absolutely loved him.

Lots of ballroom dancers in Boston and Adam does a great Bruno(DWTS judge) impression.

Toshi loved him so entertaining and fun.

Who were your favorites? Sorry for the lack of names but I was typing as I watched. Next week is Tennessee and Wayne Brady joining the judges.

Rachel’s Thoughts:
On to Boston! I was so happy to see Adam Shankman. I love Adam Shankman. He’s my favorite judge besides Lil C. He’s the loudest and the craziest of the judges (as we saw by the lamp dance). He’s also the easiest to make cry (as seen by the brother/sister salsa number). His Bruno impression is spot on too.

Beat boxer
I think that was a really great idea to combine his dance with the beat box. I’ve seen something like it with a tapper and a singer on America’s Got Talent. It must be hard to dance to the beat box because it’s variable. I wonder if the dancer tells the beat boxer what he wants as far as a sound or if it’s all off the top of the beat boxer’s head. I hope to see him back in a future season.

Jennifer Jones
I have a soft spot for girls with eating disorders who have overcome them. It takes a lot of strength to get through something like that. You can see it in the way she dances. Her movements are a little guarded. You can see a lot of the ballet in her dance. I’m excited to see more of her. She is simply gorgeous.

Tommy of TKO Dance
I don’t remember him from past seasons to be honest. He didn’t impress me much. It was the same move over and over again, although the moves were impressive. He needs different styles to maybe shake him out of how stiff he is. His lines are straight as a board. Beautiful, but not enough for me. I’ll be interested to see how he does later on.

E-Knock
Okay, if you didn’t cry during this part, you have no soul. He didn’t need to start dancing for me to start sobbing. Remember what I said about dancers who tell the story through their dancing? He is a contender. His story stands as a reminder that through the pain and sadness, there is a light at the end and things can and will get better. I’m very surprised they didn’t send him to Vegas and I hope and pray he comes back next season.

Anthony
Recognize that music? It’s from the “Addiction” dance. I personally wouldn’t use a song that has been used as a dance on the show before but he did such a good job. They almost got me with sending him to choreography. He is exactly what they talk about when they talk about dancing from within. So beautiful.

Final Thoughts
Vegas is looming and I’m worried about our fantastic hip hoppers like The Exorcist and Toshi. They are so good in their own styles, but crumble under the weight of other styles. We’ll see what happens next and if our favorites survive the week. I’m rooting for the girl from Temecula (my hometown). Let’s hope no one gets sent to the hospital this time. I’m also looking to see what comes out of Memphis. It’s such a great and musical city. I look forward to it.

My Thoughts on LA and Austin Auditions 5/21/13

First off I’d like to start off by saying how happy I am to have SYTYCD back on my television, and I think it’s time to update the opening credits for the show. I know random thought but Idol updates every year, so why can’t SYTYCD. Last nights episode we went back to LA for day two and then to Austin, Texas. I’m not going to go into detail about every audition just a few that stood out for me and if I skipped over anything that stood out for you please let me know, I like reading other people thoughts on dancers.

I like to start with a little comparing and contrasting between the two bone breaking auditions.

In LA we had Slick, who also referred to his style as Flex dancing. I tend to always find myself not wanting to watch them pop their joints in and out of socket but at the same time I can’t help but watch. I also though he was great performer and a had a great attitude. I think he held his own during the choreography round but I agree with the judges, not quite strong enough for Vegas.

In Austin we had Shane Garcia, who has a stutter and uses dance to “speak freely”. I’ll admit his story made me think of Lazero on Idol this past season. I had no doubt that he would be good but what surprised me was the feeling he danced with, which made him easier to watch compared to Slick. Like Slick, Shane held his own during the choreography round but unlike Slick, he got a ticket to Vegas.

So what are your thoughts on Slick and Shane?

Moving on, we had Alex Kessiger, Sebastian Serra, Two ballroom couples, Makenzie Dustman, and other the went straight throug to Vegas. Which of these dancers did you like and why? Makenzie, might be an early favorite for me and I loved how Jesse said she had been marinated in dance. Emilio “Millie” Dosal is my other favorite from the LA auditions. Just knowing he is part of Phillip Chbeeb’s crew, I knew he would be good and he almost had me with that fake out in the beginning. It was during the choreography round that I just couldn’t help but to watch him and I hope that he does well in Vegas cause I want him in the top 20.

Next up Austin, Texas and a new guest judge movie star Minnie Driver. Austin had plenty of talent, from new auditioners, to past favorites, and even some that weren’t auditioning for the show.

Of course they had to start with the adorable Anthony, who at only 4 is showing promise that he will be a star in dance. He was easily one of my favorite moments of the entire show. Also, to hear that Cyrus inspired him to dance, I think is fantastic. I hope he keeps up with it and maybe will see him on Season 24.(lol…if the show is still around). Very sweet to send him to Disney World.

Donovan Gibbs and his family had a touching story to keep their dance studio open and to sell their house is a brave move. I think Donovan will be one to watch to see how he does in Vegas. Loved when his dad got to show everyone where his son gets his talent, I don’t about anyone else but I would’ve given dad a ticket to Vegas.

Plenty of other great dancers Hayley Erbert, Daniela, Nick Muckleroy, and Dannon O’Brien(pleasantly surprised by him. There was a female hip hop dancer they show in the montages that I wish they showed more of, and I willing to say we will probably see her in the top 20.

Last but not least the Exorsist Hampton Williams is back and this time he brought back up, his girlfriend Darlesha Goggans and their daughter Kira. Kira another 4-year-old that just made my night, and I love how Dad and Mom joined her and it became a family dance. I was totally captivated by them and I hope we get to see more of them. On a side not how cute would it be if the two 4 year olds Anthony and Kira dance together.

Next week they are off to Boston and Adam Shankman will be on the Judging panel.

So You Think You Can Dance 2013 Premiere Commentary

Note: I realize this is a little late, but fans of the show won’t mind. Plus, this is an opportunity to introduce you to a new writer named Rachel who sent me this post. If you like this post, let us know in the comments so we can get Rachel to write more posts in the future.

The new season is finally here! I’ve been watching SYTYCD since the second season and got both my mom and my roommate into the show (just like I got them into dance moms, project runway, and many other reality shows). Last season was the season for ballet dancers, and so far this season is full of beautiful, emotional contemporary and jazz dancers who tell their story through their movements. But you shouldn’t count the hip hop dancers out just yet (especially since they keep teasing the exorcist guy from last year).

First thing I noticed was the fact that they have the same opening from what Season 5? Have they just run out of money to keep making new openings? I mean the opening is cool and all but the dancers are out of date. I kinda feel bad for those who won and don’t get a little cameo in the beginning. Do the new viewers know what dancers their watching? I could just be really nitpicky. Second thing I noticed was the gratuitous use of Fall Out Boy’s new song “My Song Knows What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up).” My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up) - My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up) - Single Last year they used Panic! At The Disco’s “Ready to Go” Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind) - Vices & Virtues (Deluxe Version) which caused me to squeal and sing along loudly (much to the annoyance of my roommates and everyone in the TV room). I am a die hard FOB fan and was really pleased to hear the song in the montages.

Okay, enough of my nitpicking the background, let’s actually talk about the dancing! I’m not a ‘trained’ dancer. I’m a dancer because I love to dance and I love the art of it all. I’m very good at picking winners, and there was only one season where I rooted for someone I didn’t think was going to win (he was my friend’s bf at the time, so I had to). I called the last season being for the ballet dancers, but this season, I’m not too sure on an exact person yet. There have been some very beautiful dancers so far with a lot of great stories to tell. Let’s hope they last through Vegas week. Side Note: Who else hates it when they spend forever on a dancer’s story, only to kick them off during Vegas? Like the girl with one hand a few seasons ago. Anyway, THIS SEASON!

The Winner of SYTYCD Armenia
That was an interesting twist, I must say. I knew they had different versions of the show and our version has taken choreographers and ideas for the format itself and incorporated them. I didn’t expect him to be Latin Ballroom either. I was impressed they did the jive too. You rarely see Latin couples doing something other than salsa at auditions. I think it’s because that the style that audiences relate more to and can recognize. Anyway, the jive. His kicks were great. He didn’t have the best legs I’ve ever seen, but it should be interesting to see how he does this time around. Side Note: Can we celebrate our winner this season by tossing them above our heads too? That looked like fun.

The Dislocated Knee
Like the girl who misspelled Vegas “V-E-A-G-S,” this girl will forever be known as her incident at her audition more than her audition itself. I personally want to know what made her choose dance over what it was she was doing before. I’m really glad she made it through her audition because that dislocation looked bad. And just in case you missed it, the cameras showed it to you again. In slow motion. But don’t worry! It popped back in again. Let’s show you that in slow motion too!

I almost changed the channel. No thank you. Ew. Anyway! I’ll be happy to see how she dances fully healed.

The Crying Dad
I was in the bathroom when this started, so I’m not sure how her dad ended up on the stage. It was great to watch. My parents are masters of the art of embarrassing parent dancing. This guy was good. Fortunately, his daughter was better. She blew me away. I think she could be a top contender. I’ve seen a pattern with the dancer’s the judges are picking. They like the ones who tell a story through their bodies. She danced with all her heart right through the tip of her fingers. And there was her dad, sobbing. In any reality show I watch, I love it when do the dramatic push-in on the crying dad. That’s my favorite. Doesn’t matter what style they’re dancing or singing, there’s dad crying like a baby. It’s so sweet!

Those are my thoughts on the new season. I think we should be on the look out for those emotional beautiful dancers. I don’t think just one style will win this year. I think it’s the person and the story that will prevail.

Mary Murphy on 10 Seasons of SYTYCD and SYTYCD 2013

Mary Murphy has been one of the mainstays of SYTYCD, so it’s interesting to hear her thoughts about this upcoming season and her experience over the past 10 years (although she wasn’t on all 10 seasons). She’s right that the 10 seasons have passed so quickly. I haven’t seen the numbers for SYTYCD season 10 yet, but I hope they’re doing well so we get a SYTYCD 11.
