Top 16 to Top 14: Thoughts and Power Rankings
What a show, the group dances were all absolutely amazing. Plus Misty Copeland finishes up her last week as a guest judge.
****SPOILER ALERT**** West coast stop reading now.
I was surprised to see Zack and Tanisha in the bottom 6…they should not have been there. If you are voting continue to vote for your favorites every week and don’t assume they are safe.
Top 3
Bridget and Emilio: I loved everything about this dance. I think they both proved themselves this week and hopefully will be safe next week. Emilio was far out of his element and he did a great job and pointed his feet.
Tanisha and Rudy: Just a very cool and sexy hip hop from Dave Scott. That outfit was hot and yes my attention went straight to Tanisha.
Carley and Surge: I’m really loving Surge as a partner and he is growing. Carly was fantastic from the turns to the back bend.
Middle 2
Valerie and Ricky: Love the energy that Bollywood brings to the stage. Both of them kept up with the pace but I do agree Valerie could have been a little sharper in the movements.
Jacque and Zack: Love this dance but something just did sit right. Zack was fantastic but I wish Jacque would let go of the “pretty” dancing.
Bottom 3
Brooklyn and Casey: I love the Choreography but those costumes were horrible. I would have rather seen the really baggy pants look. They both did do a good job at dancing it.
Emily and Teddy: All things considered I think Emily played it safe and then the slip at the beginning, she recovered well but it may have thrown her off as well. I love Teddy as a performer and glad he pulled of those lifts.
Jessica and Marcquet: Beautiful dance but that really all I can say about it.
I honestly thought after those group dances I thought there might be a possibility that they’d save them all and then do a double elimination next week. Well I was half right, there is a double elimination next week and we say goodbye to Marcquet and Brooklyn. So who’s in trouble…Jessica, Emily, Valerie(maybe), Casey, Surge, and Teddy. What are your thoughts?
You Beat me to it…your power rankings went up real fast this week.
Girls:
1. Tanisha Belnap: awesome routine and then shining in the group number.
2. Bridget Whitman: the best I have seen her dance on this show. She is changing my opinion about her.
3. Carly Blaney: they need to push her away from contemporary/jazz otherwise she will retain a top 3 spot all the way through the competition.
4. Jacque LeWarne: weaker than previous weeks but Jacque was still very very solid. She just didn’t quite have the same spark.
5. Valerie Rockey: she got the attitude and sexiness down but her hand movements weren’t quite right all the time.
6. Brooklyn Fullmer: this was a bad routine for both involved, she just gave it more attitude and therefore stood out.
7. Jessica Richens: this routine was entirely forgettable and awkward. though honestly, that awkwardness might have been more from her partner. I am just baffled how she stays out of the bottom week after week.
8. Emily James: this performance was almost as disastrous as Molly and Nate’s season 6 salsa. The injury information was helpful in knowing why though. She just looked very clumsy and not graceful at all.
Guys:
1. Emilio Dosal: brilliant attempt at a contemporary routine though a lot of the strength of the routine came from Bridget, he just kept up very well.
2. Serge Onik: I seriously think contemporary might be his thing. He has so far been better at it than ballroom. There were times that I think he outdid Carly.
3. Rudy Abreu: I was only really impressed by the top 2 guys this week. Rudy for me was just a strong dancer who did his routine justice. He was keeping up with Tanisha who was clearly the star.
4. Ricky Ubeda: he got the steps and energy on but the attitude wasn’t there. The entire routine had a love me-hate me tone to it and Ricky wasn’t getting the acting correct. Needs to work on the chemistry too at times.
5. Zack Everhart Jr.: He was good but I didn’t see him finishing moves very well. He got better as the routine progressed but was too fast from one move to another in the start.
6. Teddy Coffrey: I would honestly rate him higher if this was an easier salsa routine. Unfortunately, it was difficult and a bit of a disaster. Just impressed that he got through it with his head held high because he looked good at some points.
7. Casey Askew: he has been one of my favourites but this routine was bad for him. He lacked the attitude and just wasn’t getting down enough. All the steps that required going down low was very high up and I think any casual viewer who has watched a season of this show would be able to pick up what he did wrong there. I hope he survives.
8. Marcquet Hill: I don’t even remember he is still in this competition at times. Can’t blame his dancing because I don’t know the first thing about ballroom but he is basically invisible.
I know I usually wait for power rankings but I just didn’t want to wait…lol. Plus I didn’t want to take the chance of getting caught up in the James Brown movie premier excitement here in Augusta and forget to post.
I almost didn’t even want to do them because those group dances were so good. I also like the way the judges seem to be listening to the America’s opinion when it comes to the elimination.
I may do a fun post on dance day…may just a update on some favorite dancers. Why we haven’t seen NappyTabs yet and why we wont seen Mia. Also what dancers to look for in the new Step Up movie.
Certain dancers I was really meh on at the start of the season have slowly won me over.
Tanisha was like a beige painted wall for me at the beginning but she’s really emerged as my favorite with her stage presence and commitment to whatever dance she’s assigned. I couldn’t take my eyes of her during the hip hop and then the group dance. When she did that move in the Sonya piece where she made her limbs seem out of control and broken actually made me gasp out loud.
Valerie too is growing on me. She still dances clunky and heavy at times but the sheer joy she radiates while dancing is beautiful.
I like Jacque but she really didn’t connect to the ugly/pretty dynamic in that Sonya routine. Zach did great.
Serge continues to impress me. I was pretty miffed that he was in the bottom 3 again this week. If I was on the show, I’d want him as my partner. You know that he would take care of you and let you shine. Same thing with Emilio.
In danger next week?
Girls- Emily, Jessica, and Carly
Boys- Teddy, Casey and Rudy (I hope)
I just don’t get Rudy’s appeal. The mugging and super hyper personality just bug me. Nothing he has danced has really impressed me either.
Carley did a great job recovering from getting caught up in Teddy’s jacket in the group routine after her amazing lift.
Admittedly, we rewound the recording a few times to watch it again because it was kinda funny as it was happening, and impressive in the recovery.
Loved the group numbers at the end. My stand-outs were Ricky and Carley. Granted, the dance almost seemed to highlight them more (especially Ricky), so that may play into it.
Rudy has that personality you are going to either love or not. He really did tone it down this week. Personally he isn’t my favorite but I find myself wanting to root for him.
Emilio impressed me last night. I have to say I not sure if he would’ve done as well last season had he not broken his nose.
I feel they’re really trying too hard to play-up the Rudy / Jacque relationship thing, and it’s a detriment to their partners.
@Erik yeah you’re probably right about that. I do think that they do really like each other.
