Top 16 Results Show – STYCD Canada

Power Rankings last night were 1/3 correct… there goes my streak… I disagree with tonight’s Bottom 3… but let’s look at the whole show…

Opening Number
Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing Remix” –Sing,
Sergio Trujillo, choreographer of “Jersey Boys”

Opening Routine was fun and quirky. Girls in flapper style outfits, boys in top hats and vests… loved the look. The towel throwing didn’t work as they were too out of synch but the chairs worked well.

Judges:
-Stacey Tookey
-Rex Harrington
-Tre Armstrong
-Jean-Marc Genereaux

Results:

Janick & Shavar – safe
Nathalie & Mackenzie -safe
Danielle & Sebastian – safe
Amanda & Denys – dancing for their lives
Kloe & Jonathan – safe
Charlene & Jeff – dancing for their lives
Claudia & Edgar – safe
Kirsten & Jesse – danving for their lives

Comments:

I really feared Kirsten and Jesse or Claudia and Edgar would be in the bottom. I don’t think, based on last night, either of them should have been and I am happy for Claudia and Edgar but really, Kirsten and Jesse did amazingly last night. Charlene and Jeff, similarily, were amazing, I put them in my Top 3!! Sad at these Bottom 3.

Solo’s – Dancing for their lives

Females

Amanda – strong movements, a bit sloppy at the end but passionate
Charlene – violent movements that didn’t quite work for me but she was nervous clearly
Kirsten – slow powerful movements.

Notes – Amanda & Charlene’s first time dancing for their lives. Charlene & Kirsten are both Vancouver girls.

Males
Denys – upbeat, entertaining, fun solo!
Jeff – another fantastic solo long legs and all over the stage
Jesse – passionate, moving, awesome!

Notes – Honestly all three did such an amazing job on their solo!!

Leaving

Kirsten

Jean-Marc said he is disappointed in Canada for voting the best three dancers into the bottom. Based on being in the bottom more than the others, she is going home.

Jesse

Tre to wonders what Canada is thinking when they vote. She is upset with the results. Thinks all solo’s were dynamic display of talent. He broke down at the news. He made a plea to Canada to vote and change these results. I think it may be interpreted wrong, but I know where he was coming from.

Thoughts?

I just can’t believe it really… I mean, repeatedly in the bottom leads to going home but I wish Canada would vote more.

Power Rankings SYTYCD Canada Top 16

This week was tough. There were a few great routines and few not-so-great routines…

Judges:
Jean-Marc
Tre Armstrong
Rex Harrington
Stacey Tookey

Time Change Next Week:
Wednesday 8pm

In the opening they discussed why they do not discuss why dancers go home like the American show does. They said that there is No time to explain decisions in 30 minutes versus 60 minutes in USA. They also said that when they learn the results they also learn the number of votes. The “Dance for your lives solo” can save them, for example last week Jera and Kirsten had lowest votes but Kirsten’s solo saved her, but often who ever hads the lowest votes is who goes home unless their solo is exceptional.

With that out of the way, the dancing began – here are my power rankings… I am pretty tired so I am not sure how accurate I will be this week so please feel free to comment, disagree, agree or whatever!

********** TOP 3 **********

1 – Nathalie & Mackenzie
Contemporary – Blake McGrath
After Afterall – William Fitzsimmons – After
1-877-977-4602

So passionate and strong. I loved every moment. I am even more impressed it was about Mia and him.

2 – Janick & Shavar
Contemporary – Mandy Moore
Ordinary Moment – Fisher – Ordinary
1-877-977-4605

Very well done. I loved the use of the table. Shavar was a great partner in my opinion, he had her and moved her and it was beautiful. There was one minor trip-up but they recovered well. Love Mandy’s pieces!

3 – Charlene & Jeff
Jazz – Sean Cheeseman
Christina Aguilera – Desnudate – Desnudate
1-877-977-4604

Garden of Eden Theme was nice, lot’s of sexiness and bare skin. I liked the tunnels they moved in and on. When she crawled down him it was awesome. Some nice spins and jumps also. The routine was hot!

********** MIDDLE 2 **********

4 – Claudia & Edgar
Mambo – Gustavo Vargas
Le Reina – La Lupe – La
1-877-977-4601

She is ballroom so I expected awesome and she was. He impressed me also! I really enjoyed it!

5 – Kirsten & Jesse
Rhumba –Eric Caty & Kelly Lannan
ALways – Bon Jovi – Always
1-877-977-4607

I love this song. Some of the moves were absolutely stunning. I loved the unwrapping spin and jumps, goose bumps and you know what that means… Top 3… but they were both in bottom three last week, they both lost their partners last week and I fear that they may not get enough votes, but let me tell you THEY DESERVE THEM!! I will be voting for them repeatedly to compensate for Canada’s lack of votes for them in the past! I .worry they will be bottom 3

********** BOTTOM 3 **********

6 – Amanda & Denys
House – Sho-Tyme
Hey Hey – Dennis Ferrer – Hey
1-877-977-4603

Out of synch at times, it was a little strange for me. I am not sure what Rex was watching saying they were in synch, maybe at times. The judges seem to almost always praise anyways. Perhaps it was the hardest footwork, in which case they did well, overall, moments of fun but just average for me.

7 – Danielle& Sebastian
Hip Hop – Luther Brown
Hard – Rihanna – Hard
1-877-977-4606

I felt like Danielle was not hard hitting enough. It wasn’t good, in fact is was really good, sexy moments event. But it just felt soft for me. That being said their hip grooving was awesome. Still I think it was too weak for this week.

8 – Kloe & Jonathan
New disco – Melissa Williams
If I had You – Adam Lambert – If
1-877-977-4608

Modern version it did not feel very disco like. Very strong lifts and spins. It was not as fast as I anticipated until the end with the hand motions. Overall very sexy and fun.

To be honest I am not sure about my rankings… I am sure about my top 3, they were my favourite. Where I am unsure is that my middle two are ranked middle based on THIS WEEK…. but based on all weeks I think they will actually be in the bottom….

Time will tell – check back tomorrow for results!

Power Rankings for SYTYCD Canada Top 18

Last Week’s Power Rankings were accurate so we will see how I do this week.

The judges main message to viewers was to VOTE!!!! So I encourage everyone tonight to please do just that… VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

This was challenging because some of the routines were good but came from dancers who have been repeatedly in the bottom 3… so, with all things considered here are my thoughts…

Please feel free to comment if you agree, disagree or have anything to add or say. I am not even 100% sure I agree with my ranking, it was really hard tonight.

********** TOP 3 **********

1. Danielle & Sebastian – contemporary – Sabrina Matthews
Gunnin’ – Hedley – Gunnin'
1-866-977-4606

Emotional Concept of struggling with eating disorders. Beautiful and powerful movements. Very strong total goose bumps awesome routine. My fave of the night.

2. Charlene & Jeff – Hustle – Maria Torres
That’s Where the Happy People Go – The Trammps – That's
1-866-977-4604

Some amazing twists, flips and lifts I actually got goose bumps with the one major trick. I really enjoyed the routine. It was challenging and they pulled it off wonderfully.

3. Janick & Shavar – Hip Hip – Luther Brown
Lil Freak – Usher ft Nicki Minaj – Lil
1-866-977-4602

Much harder hitting than last week. Smooth groove. She impressed me and he was predictably good in his genre. I kept moving this up and down but decided on third place. It was awesome.

********** MIDDLE **********

4. Natalie & Mackenzie – Cha Cha – Gustavo Vargas
I like it – Enrique Inglasis ft pitbull – I
1-866-977-4605

It felt a bit slow for me but other than that it was really fun and sexy. The judges loved it but they seem to almost love everything don’t they? So much for critiques.

5. Kirsten & Jera – 90s Hip-Hop – ShoTyme
Now that we found the love – Heavy D & The Boyz ft Aaron Hall – Now
1-866-977-4607

Old School Love. Lot’s of old bounce moves that brought me back. A bit off at times but totally fun and gave me a good laugh remembering when people really danced this way.

6. Amanda & Denys – Quick Step – Tony & Melanie
Feelin’ Good – Colin James – Something
1-866-977-4601

Fast and fun. Nice flips and spins. Some rocking out that made it more enjoyable to watch than most quick steps.

********** BOTTOM 3 **********

7. Claudia & Edgar – Jazz – Sean Cheesman
Imposible – Shontelle – Impossible
1-866-977-4608

Slow start. Amazing lift spin, great chemistry for one week together. Goosebumps at times which usually means top 3 but I just don’t think it will happen based on their history so far. I hope they stay out of the bottom three this week, this routine was amazing! I am putting them 7th but I feel like they should be about 4th based JUST on tonight.

8. Kloe & Jonathan – West Coast Swing – Benji Schwimmer
Clocks – Vitamin String Quartet – Clocks
1-866-977-4609

This was a really challenging routine that didn’t feel west coast swing. Benji is amazing and the two danced really well. It was beautiful to watch. I just think it was a bit too much that didn’t fully come together.

9. Julia & Jesse – Contemporary – Stacey Tookey
Falling – Florence and the Machine – not on iTunes, so try “Heavy in Your Arms” – Heavy from the Eclipse soundtrack.
1-866-977-4603

Beautiful piece by Stacey however Melissa was right it lacked connection at times and a few lifts seemed flawed. That being said I enjoyed the routine but it was tough to pick a bottom 3 and this is just how they measured up for me overall. I don’t think I’ve ever put a Tookey routine in bottom three… eek!

SYTYCD Canada Alumni return to Choreograph and Assist Top 20

CTV posts:

SYTYCDC alumni returned to the Top 20 show to choreograph and work as choreographic assistants. They chatted about what it’s like being on the other side…

Season 1’s Natalli Reznik and Francis Lafrenière: Paso doblé choreographers

Natalli: Francis and I wanted to go a little dark and extreme with this routine. It’s a big battle about who is in control. Really, it’s all about passion.

Francis: I’m really proud of this piece. I love the opening, where the man paints on a frame and the woman reacts to it all.

Natalli: The piece is very passionate and we both wanted the dancers to understand the essence of the paso doblé and really embody their characters. It was tough in the beginning because they’re both ballet dancers, so they dance with their energy up, where in the paso, you need to get really grounded.

Francis: It was a challenge for us to figure out how to teach ballet dancers the paso as much as it was a challenge for them to learn it. Mostly, it was the posture that was difficult to master. The hips have to be over the balls of the feet – it’s hard to maintain over the course of a whole routine. You feel off balance the whole time.

Natalli: I loved performing the paso (in Season 1). Dancing with Francis is magical. He’s a very powerful dancer and I think we have the same intensity. He doesn’t scare me, he challenges me and I think I challenge him back.

Francis: You have to dance strong when you dance the paso. Strong and heavy.

Natalli: Even more than the technique and the steps, for me, paso doblé is a feeling. The dance is about struggle. It’s about overcoming and showing your passion.

Season 2’s Danny Lawn: Choreographic assistant for Stacey Tookey’s Top 20 contemporary duet

Danny: It’s so surreal being back here! I’ve missed everyone – the choreographers, the crew, everything about the show!

It’s such a relief being on the other side of things. I was watching the dry run and I could just sit and enjoy all of the dances.

Working with Stacey is totally a dream job. I wanted to work with her so badly on the show last year, but I didn’t. I got cut right before her group number – it was the worst! In rehearsals for the duet, she’d be giving notes and I’d be taking them all in, and then I’d have to remind myself that I wasn’t even going to be performing!

Being on the creative side with her is just so great. She’s so brilliant. The whole creation process is just so wonderful. She’d say things like, “I’m feeling something that moves this way and is circular, with this sort of intent behind it,” and we’d try things and she’d shape it until it was what she wanted. We were really part of the process.

The dancers are in a position that any little bit that can help and make it easier for them (we will try to give them). It feels so good to give back.

Season 2’s Natalie Lyons: Choreographic assistant for Lil’ C’s Top 20 krump duet

Natalie: It was such an honour that Lil’ C asked me to come from L.A. to work with him and so great to be back here, seeing everyone from last year. It’s been a great experience looking at it from a different perspective.

You don’t have to stress as much, which is nice and I just love watching the dancers in rehearsal and helping them out as much as I can. It’s easier to help them knowing how it feels to be in their shoes.

I am happy that my power rankings were correct this week.

Here is a Summary of Tonight’s Results Show:

Opening Number:
“Jai Ho” – Slumdog Millionaire
Longinus Fernandes

This was amazing! The colours, the moves, the synchornization, everything was absolutely stunning!

Judges:
Luther Brown
Tre Amrstrong
Jean-Marc Genereux
Special GUest – Mia Michaels

First 5 Couples out:
Charlene & Jeff – SAFE
Nathalie & Mackenzie – SAFE
Claudia & Yonni – Dancing for their lives
Kloe & Jonathan – SAFE
Julia & Jesse – SAFE

So far my Power Rankings were correct… let’s see how the rest of the results go…

Next 5 couples out:
Kirsten & Jera – Dancing for their lives
Danielle & Sebastian – SAFE
Amanda & Denys – SAFE
Bree & Edgar – Dancing for their lives
Janick & Shavar – SAFE

After last week’s horribly inaccurate Power Rankings, I am glad to see I was accurate this week.

Solo’s – Dancing for their life:

Males:
Yonni – sexy and great attitude
Jera – beautiful, acrobatic with lot’s of spins a nice combo of his styles
Edgar – smooth but hard, great swagga

Females:
Claudia – Sexy but didn’t bring as much as I would expect dancing for your life
Kirsten – beautiful movement she seemed really nervous and shakey
Bree – my favourite of the three ladies she used the whole stage high and low

Sent home:
-Bree
-Yonni

Thoughts:

Bree danced the best solo but was weakest out of the three when looking at their entire body of work so far. I was shocked by Yonni the most, I thought Edgar would go home.

And now we have a Top 18, check back next Monday for power rankings and next Tuesday for results. We will also have other fun things posted throughout the week.

SYTYCD Canada TOp 20 Can’t Live Without…

This week’s clips of the SYTYCD Canada Dancer’s has them answer the question, “What one thing can you not live without?”

Here were their responses:

Bree – earplugs to sleep
Edgar – chain (his bling necklace)
Denys – milk for strong bones
Amanda – deodorant because she sweats dancing
Jera – dance belt “man thong” because he needs support
Kirsten – dance bag with her ballet shoes and vitamins
Mackenzie – ham and pineapple pizza “it’s Fruit and meat mmmm”
Nathalie – bread and cheese which she grew up eating
Yonni – espresso he needs 3 a day
Claudia – her dog
Jeff – yoga mat
Charlene – shoes
Jesse – sunglasses
Julia – travelling
Sebastian – ice cream
Danielle – heart necklace which is a symbol for family so they are always close
Janick – eye make up remover because as a dancer she wears a lot of makeup and needs to take it off
Shavar – boxer briefs
Kloe – bronzer her nick name is “Orangey” ha ha ha
Jonathan – backpack “Man purse”

Some of these were very sentimental (Danielle for example) while others were hilarious (intentional or not)

I love the little clips before they dance, getting to know the dancers a bit more. Can’t wait for next week’s Top 18 question / clip.

If you were producer what question or clip would you want to see before the dance?

Tune in Tonight when the Top 20 becomes the Top 18

Power Rankings for SYTYCD Canada Top 20

Last week I failed at my rankings, then again, most agree Canada failed at voting, but I digress. Here are my thoughts based on tonight’s performances.

Please feel free to comment if you agree, disagree or have anything to add or say.

********** TOP 3 **********

1. Amanda & Denys – Contemporary – Sabrina Matthews
Perfect – Hedley
1-877-977-4602

I liked the story, A girl finds out she is terminaly ill, and her boyfriend feels bad he cant help her. Sabrina Matthews created a master piece. I got goosebmps and that usually equals a Top 3 rankings. There was beautiful movement and it was emotionally moving. I loved it! Well danced!

2. Jeff & Charlene – Contemporary – Stacey Tookey
Breathing – Alisa Turner
1-877-977-4606

Based on a real story from a letter from a depressed person who used her daughter to pull through. Stacey is amazing. Goosebumps and you know what that means.. Top 3 ranking… It was in their genre so it had to be wonderful. Very beautiful!

3. Kloe & Jonathan – Jazz – Blake McGrath
California Gurls – Katy Perry ft Snoop Dogg
1-877-977-4610

Very fun theme, sexy and hot… perfect song choice. Thank goodness she took off those heels – yikes! Blake’s choreo is always hot and quite precise. This had some great moments but was mostly just fun to watch. I think people will vote for it because of that reason. I had no idea Kloe had a bad ankle she pulled through that routine without me noticing which is why I put this 3rd and not 4th.

********** MIDDLE **********

4. Nathalie & Mackenzie – Hip Hop – Sho-Tyme
All I do is Win – DJ Khaled ft T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross
1-877-977-4604

I love hip hop overall and these two did a good job, Mackenzie is pretty to look at so that helps. There were some very fast moments that could have been a little but more precise but I enjoyed watching it. I was stuck between my top 3 & 4 to be honest. Kloe dancing through a bad ankle is what put them above this routine, barely.

5. Sebastian & Danielle – Theatre – Sean Cheesman
No Good Deed – Idina Menzel – Wicked Soundtrack
1-877-977-4608

Nice twists and lifts. It was very interesting to watch. I enjoyed it a lot. I think people will vote for them.

6. Jesse & Julia – Samba – Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin
Cuban Pete – isweat music
1-877-977-4607

Julia’s favourite of her 5 areas of dance I expected her to nail it and she did. Jesse was a fast learner it seemed, he had me convinced, holy hips! The wardrobe change by her was hot, although her dress started to fall apart she danced through it.

7. Shavar & Janick – Krump – Lil C
Whatever – Buckmouth
1-877-977-4609

Funky outfits, he had a tin can on his junk (as Mia pointed out) Shavar was harder hitting than she was but that wasn’t a surprise, neither hit hard enough for krump though. Still, It was “bucc”. But they were out of synch almost the entire time which kind of made it look a mess for me. Loved Lil C calling himself a Warriogropher.

********** BOTTOM 3 **********

8. Jera & Kirsten – Paso Doble – Francis LeFreniere & Natalli Reznik
Iron Might / Mind Control – Position Music
1-877-977-4603

Dramatic movements, lights outfits, the end spin was amazing but the drop was a bit hard at the end. It was good. Not great. I love these two dancers so I hate putting them in the bottom 3 but based on tonight that is where they fall… I don’t see them going home though.

9. Claudia & Yonni – Foxtrot – Danny Quillam
Telephone – Lady Gaga ft Beyonce
1-877-977-4605

Modern music with a not-so-modern dance style, hot outfits, felt a bit slow for the music until the steps around the stage. Mixed results from the judges. I wasn’t feeling it personally but can see the artistic, uniqueness about it. A juxtaposition between tradition and modern… very interesting.

10. Bree & Edgar – Dancehall – Jaeblaze
Clarks (feat Popcaan and Gaza Slim) – Vybz Kartel
1-877-977-4601

Smooth, he is harder hitting than she (hip hop background, vs contemporary) I wasn’t a fan overall. There were moments of good but also moments of random nothing. Luther said it was good dancehall, what do I know about it? Just average for me.

I really have a tough time ranking these dancers… Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
