Eric From Black Gold on The Baub Show Tonight!

I *just* got a message that Eric will be interviewed on The Baub Show, which looks like a streaming site with some pretty cool interviews. The message says it’ll be at 7 p.m. PST, which is pretty much right now, so check it out. It looks like the interviews are archived if you miss it, never fearB

Mini Black Gold Concert – Just for You!

So I stumbled upon this series of Black Gold performances from Spinner earlier. They’re really beautiful quality and the guys sound amazing. I can’t help feeling a little proud, like some of their success is due to SYTYCD (and us!), just like with Christina Perri and her song “Jar of Hearts” Jar.

They play “Shine” Rush first, of course. But then they play some of their other songs – “Dreams & Reveries,” “The Breakdown” and “The Comedown.” I could totally see “The Comedown” The being used for a Mandy Moore jazzy contemporary – it’s got just enough of that funky retro 80s vibe to be right up her alley. Dare I say Eric sounds a little Bowie-esque? Maybe a bit T.Rex-ish? Tell me what you think!

And there’s an interview, fyi. I’m still partial to my own interview with Eric, of course, but it’s really cool to see Than talk a bit, since he wasn’t around when we recorded. I met him later, but we didn’t get it recorded for posterity. 🙂 Anyway, the best part of the interview is when Than is so passionate talking about his vintage instruments.

If you’re a bit sick of all my raving and maybe you think you’ve heard “Shine” too many times on the show, take a moment to listen to one of their other songs or watch these videos (they’re great performers!) and you’ll quickly see why I love them so much. For instance, check out “Breakdown” below:

So You Think You Can Dance Finale Special Guest *Spoilers*

Well, I’ve been debating whether to post the “secret” person who will be dancing with Twitch in the place of the injured Alex Wong. Of course, when they say that I’m totally interested to know who it is. Although, the show didn’t really try to hide who it was going to be. They gave it to the various “TV Guide” like sites to have it listed as the description for tonight’s show.

So…now for the SYTYCD Finale Spoilers (you’ve been warned): Read more..

Top SYTYCD Music of 8/1-8/8

We’re almost near the end of the Season 7 and we’ve seen a lot of great music. Last week, I listed the Top SYTYCD Music during the previous week and I’m doing it all over again here and now.

Top SYTYCD Music of 8/1-8/8:
1. DeVotchka’s “How It Ends” – How
2. Anouk’s “Lost” – Lost
3. Basement Jaxx ft. Kelis, Meleka and Chipmunk’s “Scars” – Scars
4. Kosheen’s “Hide U” – Hide
5. Lissie’s “Everywhere I Go” – Everywhere
6. Janelle Monae’s “Tightrope” – Tightrope
7. Tom McRae’s “You Only Disappear” – You
8. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult’s “Wasted Time” – Wasted
9. Astor Piazolla’s “Oblivion” – Oblivion
10. Roisin Murphy’s “Sinking Feeling” – Sinking

And your lagniappe:
11. Michael Andrews ft. Gary Jules’s “Mad World” – Mad
12. Telepathe’s “Lights Go Down” – Lights [Due to special circumstances, I accidentally left this one off the list. It’d actually be #10, but I’m gonna stick in as 9.5]
13. Lil Jon and LMFAO’s “Outta Your Mind” – Outta
14. Black Gold’s “Shine” – Shine
15. Kate Earl “Impossible – Impossible, also from my suggested music post
16. Katie Thompson’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” – Heaven
17. David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over” – When
18. Florence + the Machine’s “The Drumming Song” – Drumming
19. Project Jenny, Project Jan ft. So Percussion’s “You Said” – You from my “I Hear Music” suggested music post
20. Melissa Etheridge’s “Fearless Love” – Fearless

I know my lagniappe doubled the main list this week, but the second half of this list were all pretty close, so I just had to include them all.

I’m surprised that Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts” Jar isn’t on the list this week, since it’s been high up there for so long. But I am surprised to see two songs from my suggested list are still so popular with y’all.

In that vein, look for a super-secret mondo post next week, after the finale and the last Top SYTYCD Music post of Season 7.

And, of course, you can check out all Season 7’s music here.

Let’s make a deal…

So, Red Bull Records and Black Gold are offering a pretty phenomenal prize for their Black Gold Thinks You Can Dance Contest –

4. PRIZES: 1 winner will be awarded local dance classes for themselves and a friend. ARV: $500 USD

I think we have loads of people here on the site who would a) make a great video and b) really enjoy the prize. Including all those phenomenal dancers who didn’t win the classes offered by Cliche Cosmetics. But maybe you’re embarrassed or shy or…lazy. Those have all been excuses of mine in the past.

So, our excuses end here. If 20 people from our site enter the contest by August 15th, before the official deadline (August 19th), I will thoroughly embarrass myself by submitting a video of my own. I promise you it WILL be bad dancing (I’m like Cat) and it will be embarrassing. I’d love if John and my fellow PureSYTYCD writers anted up and joined me (20 videos for each of us to dance?), but that’s up to them. Lol.

So, if you want to see me dance, here are MY rules:

1) Submit your video dancing to Black Gold’s “Shine” Shine by August 15th on the BGTYCD Contest site.
2) Post a comment on THIS post with a link to your entry.
3) If 20 of our readers submit their videos, I’ll submit one of my own. Gulp. (I do NOT promise to dance alone – if I can con someone into dancing with me, I totally will, but that’s my only stipulation).

“Shine” has been the elimination song all season long and now Black Gold’s gonna play on the finale! I can’t wait!

Black Gold’s Gonna Be on the Season 7 Finale!!!

Hi everyone!! A little birdie at Red Bull Records just gave me the heads up that Black Gold will perform “Shine” on the finale, just as Eric and I suggested in our video interview when they were in New Orleans.

You might not realize that you know the band Black Gold, but you do. They perform the song “Shine,” Shine which has been our elimination song all season.

I inundated you with a series of posts about my experience meeting the band at their New Orleans show and some of our readers won the chance to see them perform as well and wrote about it.

The news is everywhere at this point. Here’s a US Magazine piece.

Black Gold themselves broke the news on their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Don’t forget that you can still submit a video of YOU dancing to “Shine” to win dance classes in your city.

Am I wrong to feel like my Evil Masterplan for good live music on SYTYCD has come to fruition? Lol.

SYTYCD Season 7 Top 6 (Again!) Results Thoughts

Well, I’ve kinda given away some of my thoughts over on the discussion post. Just had to get them out. 🙂 But here I go…

-Loved that opening number. It was delicious. While I loved seeing Allison surrounded by ten guys, I wondered if that was supposed to be Lauren and it made me sad a bit that we didn’t get to see her dance it. I kept thinking that it was a Sonya routine, maybe even Wade (a la Ramalama). Apparently, I’m utterly unused to seeing Mia’s choreography, because I was actually shocked when I heard it was hers – more shocked that I hadn’t recognized it, really.

-I liked that they told us right away that Lauren was fine. Least they didn’t play with us.

-Love that Gatorade is recognizing dancers as athletes. Took them long enough. If golf is a sport, dance is. Dancers have to take care of their bodies more than a lot folks who’re already considered athletes.

-It was a bit sucky of them to bring out the contestant with probably the most and the worst votes at the same time, but at least there was a nice lack of suspense. Kent’s safe, Jose’s not.

-Adechike and Billy was a bit more suspenseful. Personally, I noticed Adechike’s King Zulu t-shirt cause Zulu is my favorite Mardi Gras parade. I wasn’t too surprised when Adechike was safe and Billy wasn’t, even though it wasn’t what I predicted in my Power Rankings.

-What DID surprise me was that Lauren was in the bottom and Robert was safe. Then, I thought again and I blamed the judges/Cat/the producers for telling us all riiiiiiight at the end of the show that Lauren was injured and *nothing* else. So, everybody probably thought she was going home anyway and didn’t vote for her. I was relieved Robert’s safe and I had a pretty good feeling that she was gonna be safe, so mostly I was mourning Billy.

-I enjoyed the Step Up 3D dancers a lot, especially Tony Bellissimo. I’m even more excited for the movie knowing he’s in it. He was one of my favorites last year and he got booted off first! It was really unfair. But it just goes to show that SYTYCD is a reality tv show and the dance community is bigger than a tv show and it takes care of its own. Tony Bellissimo danced on the same stage with Lil C! So, too bad I didn’t get to see him during a STYCYD season, but I’ll get to see him dance now and again. The same is true for *all* of these dancers we’re getting introduced to – Jose and Billy, Alex and Ashley, Adechike and Robert and everyone we’ve ever loved on the SYTYCD stage.

-I already said this in the comments of the discussion post, but that musical performance by Christian TV was atrocious and I’m really pissed that we didn’t *really* get to see Kherington and Lexi dance. Biggest misuse of SYTYCD alumni ever. Criminal, in fact. Annnnd, WHERE is our All-Star performance? They gave the time to that guy instead? Criminal!

-Jose’s solo only reinforced what we all already know – he’s a one-note dancer, but incredibly sweet. Billy kicked ass with his solo. It was as if he was giving it one last valiant effort to stay in, even though he knew he was leaving, and at the same time he was saying to all the choreographers out there, “THIS is what Billy Bell can do, doncha want to choreograph me?” Clearly, this won’t be the last we see of him. Lauren’s solo was awesome and it did showcase her well.

-I did enjoy Allison Iraheta and Orianthi rocking out, I must say. Who were the dancers that performed on stage with them? I feel like we never got close enough to their faces to identify them. Anybody know?

-Alright, so the judges make the right decision faced with this Bottom 3, but it still sucks to lose Billy. I disagree with Nigel that his “androgynous style” kept him from connecting with the audience. I think that they were treating him like the second coming and it went to his head and people didn’t know how to take his swagger/arrogance/humor/whatever it was. He never really found his place inside the reality tv show aspect of it. But I think he proved a few times that he knows who he is when it comes to dance. I’m glad that Lauren stays. And I think every SYTYCD fan cheered when they heard that the judges don’t get to make the decision anymore.

That’s about it for me. What do you think?
