SYTYCD Canada – Finale Performance Show

Tonight was the final performance show of the season.

Lindsey & Matt
Hip-Hop – ShoTyme
“Like That” – Like That - 534 Memphis Bleek

This was energetic, hard hitting and fun. I really enjoyed watching it and thought it was a great start to the show.

Jordan & Christian
Contemporary – Stacey Tookey
“All in Love is Fair” – All in Love Is Fair - Innervisions (Reissue) Stevie Wonder

This was a powerful piece about a chance encounter between past lovers who relive a moment. I thought it was moving and pretty. There was a near-miss on a lift that scared me but they recovered well.

Melissa & Shane
Salsa – Gustavo Vargas
“Salsa y Sabor” – Salsa y Sabor - Para Los Rumberos Tito Puente

This had some serious lifts, twists, spins and tricks. BOTH of them did some crazy flips and it ended with an amazing one-legged lift by Shane pulling Melissa over him, amazing!

Girls Routine

Mia Michaels
“What About Us” – What About Us - Future Memories ATB

This was, hands down, my most favourite routine of the season, and maybe ever. It was absolutely crazy-good. I will post it for everyone to see because it truly was THAT awesome!

Guys Routine
Melissa Williams
“We Will Rock You” – We Will Rock You - Queen: Greatest Hits Queen

After the girl’s routine this simply wasn’t up to par. It was fun, the guys did lifts and tricks and moved well, but the girl’s was just that much better! Christian really stood out fo rme in this routine.

SOLOS

Shane“Fancy Footwork” – Fancy Footwork - Fancy Footwork Choremo

Another amazing solo from Shane. I really find him the strongest of the male dancers.

Melissa“Commander” – Commander (feat. David Guetta) - Here I Am (Deluxe Version) Kelly Rowland

She was amazing, so much power and energy, when she dances she commands attention. She has been consistently great this whole season and I will not be surprised if she wins.

Lindsey“Beautiful” – Beautiful - Bitter Me’Shell Ndegeocello

Easily the most growth this season. Her solo showed such maturity and commitment, I had goosebumps watching her dance.

Matt“Ain’t No Sunshine” – Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers' Greatest Hits Bill Withers

For me the most improved male dancer. I am surprised he is still around over some of the other dancers, but he is holding his own and his solo was very good.

Christian“Beautiful People” – Beautiful People (feat. Benny Benassi) [Main Version] - F.A.M.E. Chris Brown

I often forget he is ballroom because he really does so well in every genre thrown at him. I appreciated his upbeat solo that was ballroom but very fluid and fun.

Jordan“This Woman’s Work” – This Woman's Work - Covers - EP Greg Laswell

Jordan was my pick to win since auditions. I adore her and I will stick to my decision for her to win, her solo was amazing, her dancing all season has been consistently great.

POWER RANKINGS

This is tough. I am ultimately voicing my predictions for the win….

Since day ONE I have been a Jordan fan, and even though Melissa has quickly crept up on (and at times even surpassed) Jordan, I am going to stick with Jordan to win. Melissa a close second (or if I am wrong, Melissa will win and Jordan a close second) I guess there are two ways to do this – MY OPINION and what I THINK CANADA’S OPINION WILL BE….

Mandy’s Thoughts:
1 – Jordan
2 – Melissa
3 – Lindsey
4 – Shane
5 – Christian
6 – Matt

Prediction based on Canada’s Votes:
1 – Melissa
2 – Jordan
3 – Christian
4 – Matt
5 – Lindsey
6 – Shane

WHY ARE THEY SO DIFFERENT?
Because, I think Canada, like USA SYTYCD, sometimes gets it wrong, or some dancers simply have more fan support for whatever reason. This is why the “winner” is called “favourite dancer” not “best dancer” at the end.

We often see the same fantastic dancers keep getting bottom 3, while some less talented dancers stick around week after week. Every season of every SYTYCD it happens. Of course, we all have different opinions on what we like, but that is how it goes.

For example, I think Joey should be in the finale, within Top 3 to be honest, but he is gone. I also thought Denitsa stuck around way too long. I could go on, but I won’t.

For the Comments….

Mia Michaels Gone for SYTYCD 2011 but Mary Murphy is Back

In case you missed the news, Mia Michaels said that she’s leaving So You Think You Can Dance and won’t be back on SYTYCD 2011. Marc Malkin found this out in an interview he did with Mia Michaels. Here’s the important parts:

“Last year when I was sitting on the [judges] panel, I knew it wasn’t the right fit because I felt too glossy sitting on the panel,” she exclusively tells us. “People were so focused on what I wore and my hair. I wanted to get dirty and back to the work. I am an artist and I’m a visionary. I need to paint my world now and not be constantly linked to So You think You Can Dance.”

Not that she doesn’t appreciate what SYTYCD has done for her. “It’s been a great platform,” Michaels says. “It was a wonderful platform. I’m staring at [my] two Emmys right now. It was an amazing, amazing thing for me but I feel like I have to fly. I have to now focus on Mia’s world.”

And that world includes starring in an upcoming Bravo reality show, writing a memoir and developing a Broadway show. “I heard they’re bringing Mary Murphy back and I’m really happy for her,” Michaels says. “I’ve sat in that chair, but I feel like that was Mary’s chair.”

I hate that Mia is so schizophrenic about these things. Why does it always have to be an all or nothing thing? If she’s an artist, then go back to being an artist and choreograph and produce your art on the show. I think we all agree that you shouldn’t be on the judges panel. At least not very much, but don’t deprive us of your choreography because you had a bad time on the panel. Ugh!

Then, of course Mary Murphy back on SYTYCD 2011. Well, I’ve made my feelings clear how I feel about Mary Murphy. Maybe I’ll try and make peace with Mary in a future post. Marianya asked me if I’d rather have Mary or Mia. I answered, Neither! I want the blonde ballroom lady with the awesome accent (sorry I’m too lazy to look up her name). You know who I’m talking about. She was and is FANTASTIC!

Just call me Charlie...but where are my angels?

Broadway + SYTYCD = Amazing!

Hi everybody! I haven’t posted in a while, school has been crazy, but something caught my eye today that I wanted to share with you. As many of you know, I’m the resident broadway geek here at PureSYTYCD, and I was on www.broadway.com this morning when I came across a post about SYTYCD! Actually, it was SYTYCD Canada. Mia Michaels has been doing a lot of choreographing for their 3rd season, which as we all know from Mandy’s awesome recaps is down to their final 4 (I’ll miss you Mackenzie!!). Well, back at the end of September, Mia choreographed a group number for the top 10 to the song Will I? (Lose My Dignity) from the iconic musical, RENT.

I know we’ve been pretty critical of Mia as a judge on our site, but this piece just reinforced to me what an incredible choreographer she is. She took a piece of music that is really only known to a select audience (the broadway community/fans) and made it contemporary and relatable. It’s a powerful and moving number, one that most certainly would get Emmy consideration had it been here in the states. It also benefitted from another thing we don’t have anymore, the old stage!! Seeing the emotional commitment of the dancing just took the piece to another level. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Results…

Amanda & Sebastian – SAFE
Claudia & Denys – SAFE
Jonathan & Nathalie – Dancing for their lives
Shavar & Kloe – Dancing for their lives
Charlene & Mackenzie – SAFE
Janick & Jeff – SAFE
Edgar & Danielle – Dancing for their lives

Comments:

Well my Power Rankings were WAY off [1/3]. It was one of the few times I ignored Canada’s voting “trends” and went based on ONLY my opinion… I know Edgar keeps getting bottom 3 but last night, he was amazing! I hoped with the couple switch up’s Canada may not be so silly to put him in the bottom, but they did – again!

Solo’s

Nathalie – holy shiny pants! Sharp movements, really fantastic!
Kloe – a little strange and different but maybe that is a good thing?
Danielle – very pretty and passionate, some big leaps and lunges.

Jonathan – Pure, natural talent. Beautiful to watch his passion on stage.
Shavar – shirtless and hard-hitting-smooth. Lot’s of grinding and thursting.
Edgar – His solo’s are always amazing, he knows he truly IS dancing for his life each time. It was truly awesome and funky!

Going Home:

-Kloe
-Shavar

Comments:

Of the three girls I agree with Kloe going home, though I would have chosen Claudia over all. I am sorry to Claudia lovers, I DO LOVE HER TOO but in ballroom. I haven’t seen her excel outside her genre. Similarly with the bottom 3 guys, Shavar would be the one to send home because he isleast experienced. Nonetheless, it is getting tough to see them go home!

Top 18 Results Show on SYTYCD Canada

My power rankings last night were pretty accurate once again, well two out of three is not bad.. certainly better than my first week’s epic fail ha ha….

Here is how tonight’s episode went:

Opening Number:
“Let Go” – Mitzi Gaynor
Mia Michaels

Sliding around, bright coloured suits, smoke sticks in their mouths, sharp movements and jumps mixes with slow groovy motions.

Judges:
Blake McGrath
Tre Amrstrong
Jean-Marc Genereux
Special Guest – Melissa Williams

Results:

Amanda and Denys – safe

Kloe and Jonathan – safe

Janick and Shavar – safe

Jera and Kirsten – dancing for their lives

Claudia and Edgar – dancing for their lives

Charlene and Jeff – safe

Nathalie and Mackenzie – safe

Julia and Jesse – dancing for their lives

Danielle and Sebastian – safe

Solo’s – Dancing for their life:

Females:
Kirsten – seemed nervous with a few wobbles but overall strong movement
Claudia – Again, I expect a lot from women’s ballroom solo and she didn’t quite bring it as much as I would have liked.
Julia – Had a more entertaining ballroom solo than Claudia in my opinion

Males:
Jera – very passionate he danced like he meant it
Edgar – I love his solo’s he is smooth and has swagga’
Jesse – he danced for his life… holy passion

Sent home:
-Julia
-Jera (not unanimous – Tre was in tears)

Thoughts:

I was shocked Jera went home. I thought Edgar would to be honest. Julia did not surprise me though I would have sent Claudia home, she is a one-trick pony in my opinion.

And now we are down to 16…

Thoughts?

I am happy that my power rankings were correct this week.

Here is a Summary of Tonight’s Results Show:

Opening Number:
“Jai Ho” – Slumdog Millionaire
Longinus Fernandes

This was amazing! The colours, the moves, the synchornization, everything was absolutely stunning!

Judges:
Luther Brown
Tre Amrstrong
Jean-Marc Genereux
Special GUest – Mia Michaels

First 5 Couples out:
Charlene & Jeff – SAFE
Nathalie & Mackenzie – SAFE
Claudia & Yonni – Dancing for their lives
Kloe & Jonathan – SAFE
Julia & Jesse – SAFE

So far my Power Rankings were correct… let’s see how the rest of the results go…

Next 5 couples out:
Kirsten & Jera – Dancing for their lives
Danielle & Sebastian – SAFE
Amanda & Denys – SAFE
Bree & Edgar – Dancing for their lives
Janick & Shavar – SAFE

After last week’s horribly inaccurate Power Rankings, I am glad to see I was accurate this week.

Solo’s – Dancing for their life:

Males:
Yonni – sexy and great attitude
Jera – beautiful, acrobatic with lot’s of spins a nice combo of his styles
Edgar – smooth but hard, great swagga

Females:
Claudia – Sexy but didn’t bring as much as I would expect dancing for your life
Kirsten – beautiful movement she seemed really nervous and shakey
Bree – my favourite of the three ladies she used the whole stage high and low

Sent home:
-Bree
-Yonni

Thoughts:

Bree danced the best solo but was weakest out of the three when looking at their entire body of work so far. I was shocked by Yonni the most, I thought Edgar would go home.

And now we have a Top 18, check back next Monday for power rankings and next Tuesday for results. We will also have other fun things posted throughout the week.
