Twitch was in Hairspray
Turns out that my favorite dancer from Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance has actually been doing a bit of broadway dancing on the side. Stephen Boss (Twitch) was actually in Hairspray. Not a complete surprise that many of these dancers have had dancing gigs before going on the show, but it does make me lose a little of the WOW factor when someone like Twitch is already getting paid to perform a different style.
I just saw hairspray and recognized him too.
Remember he’s been on the show before just never made it to Vegas. So he would know that experience is gonna get him further and further. So if its taking classes or gigs in a different dance style why wouldnt you do it if its gonna make you better.
Twitchington rocks
I saw it to!!! just now and was a little pissed.
Twitch is my favorite dancer and I still love him and want him to do well.
It’s not that he was in Hairspray that bothers me. Sabre and some of the others can be seen as background dancers in lots of things.
It’s the fact that no one has ever mentioned anything on the show – especially when Adam Schankman who choreographed Hairspray guest judges (he’s also billed as the Talent Agent in the credits which means he would have known he was hiring Twitch).
I still want him to win it. I think he’s the most lovable guy and one of the most talented dancers ever – and I do agree that he knows the ropes and is smart to crosstrain styles but I do think that just as they told us Debbie Allen worked with Will – they should have said Shankman worked with Twitch.
I agree that something should be mentioned just to be fair. Especially by Adam Schankman since everyone knows him as Mr. Hairspray. However, Twitch is still killer in his own discipline that I think it more than overcomes the fact that he was in Hairspray. It’s kind of the point of the show to learn more disciplines and to his credit he did. I just think more people should know about it.
I just watched the movie and was shocked to see Twitch. I agree, something definitely needs to be said because of Schankman’s involvement with the show. Debbie Allen couldn’t be a judge because of Will and the conflict of interest. I would think the same rule should apply.
I recognized Twitch a while ago in Hairspray and have since checked the casting list of Hairspray and could not find his name there. I however 100% agree. If Debbie Allan cannot be a job because of Will then I think the same should apply for Adam and Twitch. Or they should have least mentioned it when he judged. I was totally waiting for him too and he never did….I was pissed. I also agree that I lost a little of my Wow factor as you put it for Twitch. I still Love him as well, and think that he totally reminds me of Benji and Donyelle, except for the fact that they were never in the bottom three. However, now I’m sort of leaning towards Chelsea hightower to win, just cause I think someone who wins should be someone who really needs it. And Twitch doesn’t really need this to succeed.
Also to add to what I said ……..Twitch’s role in Hairspray wasn’t even just a little cameo. He had the part at the end finale, where he was a “love” or “like” interest at the end for Brittany Snow. He was showing her how to move. So it wasnt just like he was another face in the crowd. I think if people find out about this then Twitch is gonna lose a lot of his fans interest. People will still love him, There just gonna be focusing on someone who, Like I said aldready, Needs this.
I’m not sure what needing it has to do with anything. They all need it or they wouldn’t be on the show. I’m sure if they had tons of job offers then they would be off doing that. The show is about the best well rounded dancer. All of them have the option to study other styles of dance before being selected. It’s just to Twitches credit that he is already good enough to be hired. If you know your going to be on a show that judges you on other styles why wouldn’t you prepare. That’s just common sense or at least someone that wants to win.
Continued…..I do agree that the show should have mentioned the connection to Schankman, but that’s not Twitch’s fault. Besides it’s not like he had a lead role. He wasn’t even on the screen long enough for me to get my TIVO to pause on him so I could make sure it was him.
I have to agree that I don’t personally vote for people because they need it. However, the best part of reality shows is that people can vote for whatever reason they want. You are free to vote for someone, because you think they suck and you want to keep them on the show to spite someone. That’s not what I do, but it’s the beauty of voting is that you can choose whatever reason you want to vote.
I agree that it was smart of Twitch to study other dances since that’s what SYTYCD is about, but the fact that he studied it well enough to get a paying gig in that style just takes a little bit of the underdog luster off of him.
So, I guess that basically tells you what I like to vote for. I like (and I think much of America) likes to vote for the underdog who has had to fight 3 years to get there, but still fights. Or the underdog that shouldn’t be able to do a certain style, but pulls it out of nowhere and amazes you in a style they shouldn’t be able to do that well. That’s where my vote goes. That’s why I loved Ivan and was glad to see him stay. That’s why Benji amazed me. That’s why this year I loved Comfort and I think Katee and Courtney have a little bit of underdog in them too.
I totally agree, Its what I meant by someone needing it or deserving it more than others. Those rare people who shouldnt be able to do a certain thing and pull it off in amazement. Good ex. is Sabra, I think its why she won last season. Know one expected her to be that good for only having 3-4 yrs dancin experience. So dont take my opinion in the wrong way. I just thought Twitch was gonna be another Benji for more. And he still could be without a doubt, He just lost that status for me is all.
Well if you saw the last show you may have lost some of your excitement about Comfort as well. They mentioned that she went to a performing arts school where she studied everything but Hip Hop. I think there is info about all of them that we just don’t know.
Come on. Studying various dances isn’t the same as getting paid to dance a certain genre. Sure, I preferred Ivan over others since he hadn’t studied much other than Hip Hop, but getting paid just takes a little bit away from his dancing. I still love his dancing, but I would have loved it just a bit more if he hadn’t been paid already to dance it.
Just to clear it up, Twitch DID make it to vegas last year but at the very end him and hok were the last 2 guys left and the judges choose hok. I am soooo glad he came back. I love him!!!
I think people shouldn’t take Twitch’s break so seriously. Yes, it should have been mention, but they often tend to not mention other gigs or shows they been in. Still Twitch may have had some experience but there were still alot of dances he still had to learn. I like Twitch I like him alot. Its just like Blake, Benji, Sabra they all had experiences before show. Alot of the dancers did, I don’t think less of Twitch nor am I angry about Twitch being in a film I’m acturally proud. And from the last season he was on and he did make it to Vegas he just lost to Hok, you gotta realize that alot of people who don’t make still can get booked into gigs or picked up by artist and shows. Twitch just had a lucky break. Which I’m sure a couple of other dancers have too. I say Congrats to Twitch and Keep dancing on! And another thing there are TONS of things we don’t know about these dancers, And maybe some choose not to share their past history in dance. But either way its a dance show for the best dancer. Its so you think you can dance, not who got experience. But I’m glad that Josh Won!
I just finished watching Hairspray and noticed Twitch as well, and my concern isn’t that he had past experience, but that Shankman directed him in this, and yet was still allowed to judge him, while Debi Allen had to withdraw because she taught Will. I know the degree of interaction is probably different, but I find it hard to believe that Shankman wouldn’t have known/recognized/learned that Twitch was from his cast, and that that wouldn’t possibly have put him in a more favorable light…?
But whatever. I like Twitch, and the season’s over anyway. Can’t wait till next year!
just a tiny tid bit…..the man who directed the movie hairspray was adam Shankman who is also a judge on the sytycd….he also did the coreography for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episode…Once More With Feeling….I find it kind of weird that sytycd made one judge sit out this season because she worked with Jousha before but didnt make Adam do the same….
So i was just wathcing hairspray on hbo and i noticed twitch in the background and was like wait this cant be him. and i watched and eventually i deduced that it is definitely him. i thought that on the show that they would have told us that he had prior dancing experience but they didnt. they made it seem like he was just straight off the streets. i think that that was most of the reason y people liked him soo much. because it seemed like he was just learning all of this stuff and that he was a natural at it. so now i totally dont no if im gonna be able to watch that show with the same point of view.
Bo-jangles Skinner,
I can’t argue with you there. You can see from the conversation above that I mostly share your opinion. The only thing I can give Twitch and the show is that Twitch tried out for how many years in a row? So, the idea he was off of the street was from some of his first times on the show. I believe his appearance on Hairspray was well after his first couple tryouts. However, like you said, they did nothing to correct the story and say he was in Hairspray either.
Of course, the dancing is amazing and so the show is still great to watch. It’s just disappointing when they paint a picture that’s missing many details.
Twitch is in the movie because if you remember Adam offered the winner of that season a role in his movie. I have all the seasons saved and I remember Adam saying that who ever won said season would have a part in his new movie.
I retract my statement after a bit more looking into but I am certain that Adam did offer a spot in one of his movies. I guess Joshua might be in hairspray 2 but wouldn’t you assume Twitch would be in it. It was also weird to see Hawk and Dominic on America’s Best Dance Crew.
Heather,
I remember that Adam did offer someone a spot on his next movie. I can’t remember when that was, but it wasn’t how Twitch got on the show. Now you have me wondering what ever happened with that promise from Adam.
[…] tell the whole story about dancers. I remember the outrage about this short post I did about Twitch dancing in Hairspray. No one had an issue that Twitch was in Hairspray. It was that the show acted like he hadn’t […]
