Auditioning for SYTYCD Multiple Times
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but it’s become even more interesting now that so many wonderful dancers just got kicked off So You Think You Can Dance. No doubt a ton of really really great dancers got sent home. So, it begs the question of whether people should be allowed to audition for So You Think You Can Dance multiple times.
To round out the discussion, you have to remember that rules about auditioning multiple times would apply to crappy dancers like “Sex” and Leo as much as great dancers like Natalie Reid and Paula Van Oppen. On the one hand, I like the storylines of people trying over and over again and finally achieving their dream. I loved when Twitch game back and finally made it. However, I’d be happy to never see Sex on the show again.
It’s funny, because after Leo and Sex battled it out on SYTYCD, I found Leo’s twitter account and sent him a couple messages and he replied. I asked him if he was going to audition again. He said he might, but he’d have to travel to LA to do it. I told him he had to audition again, he needed to pull out a few more spins. He then told me that he could do even more spins on roller blades. I of course then suggested that he take his rollerblades to the next audition. Can you imagine?
Anyway, I guess I have some mixed feelings about multiple auditions. On the one hand I like to see someone living their dream. On the other, I like to see fresh faces and to see new talent on the show. At the end of the day, the dancing and choreography is so amazing I’m not sure all the rest really matters all that much. Although, it’s a good topic for discussion in between episodes.
Paula better return! Hopefully she be there in Season 6 with other DP dancers like Nathan Trasoras, Athena Sterig and Lexie Contursi. No doubt Kherbear will we there to cheer them on.
DANCING IS A SPORT YOU TRY OUT FOR THE MAJOR LEAGUES AND IF YOU DONT MAKE IT YOU GET SENT TO THE MINORS TO HONE YOUR SKILLS BEFORE YOU COME BACK AND SHOW YOUR FULL POTENTIAL AND BECOME ROOKIE OF THE YEAR MVP AND GET IN THE HALL OF FAME VERY FEW MAKE IT TO THE BIS LEAGUES THE FIRST TIME . THE SAME SHOULD BBE SAID FOR DANCERS ON THE SHOW AND IF WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH A LITTLE SEX EVERY YEAR SO BE IT
Isn’t this more an issue of what the show chooses to show or or not? Multiple auditions are part of the learning process: they say to go back and work on something, and then the dancers have a chance to learn, improve, and see if they make it. Sex is just a gimmick, not a typical case. The producers choose the best storylines, and we only get shown the tip of the iceberg. Since the eligibility is an age-range, why not let people audition as they improve? otherwise, you’d limit the talent pool way too much. Hok, Twitch, Benji, and many others had to audition more than once, and I think we’d have had a less interesting show if they had not been allowed to come back. but the producers are the ones who choose to reveal or not to us how often people try out.
I agree with Joanna: the producers decide what we see. I bet there are many dancers who have auditioned more than once, but we never see them because the show runners don’t think we are interested in their stories. Sex gets a strong reaction, and that is why they keep showing him again.
I also think that the multiple auditions make the show stand out above the other reality shows because it gives you a bit of a storyline to follow. (I think Biggest Loser is jumping on this because they are bringing back a contestant from their last season who still had weight to lose at the finale.) It gave me a little thrill to see Hok and Twitch come back. It also makes it easier to spot SYTYCD alum in music videos and commercials because the show has put them in front of the camera enough to make an impression in my brain. Then I come back next season to see if I can spot the next rising dance star.
I like when people come back, especially if you liked them the year before and they didn’t make the cut. Like people are saying, i was so glad to see Hok and Twitch back. And this season I was glad to see some people back, like Phillp. BUT I would agree that SEX is one I could live without. I don’t think that the Nigel putting him through choreography in hopes that would he would finally SEE that he isn’t good is . He clearly thinks on total different plane than most. He enjoys his 15 minutes of fame and probably won’t give that up anytime soon. BUT who knows, maybe he won’t come back. Back to re-auditioning, I really hope some of those (natalie) would come back and audition. It’s probably pretty heart breaking to keep getting rejected, and want to come back again and again….I thought Bianca kind of had a point to what she was saying when she got cut, but you gotta fight for you dream! I definitely hope to see some of my faves come back next season!
I felt sorry for Natalie, I mean she was excellent last year and they practically begged her to come back and seemed to be disappointed in her and just WHAM! No do over, no dance for your life….nada, at what point do you move on? People like that tapper, I think her name was Debra, she said she was meant to be on the show, but after her cut she said that she’s NOT coming back. I personally didn’t feel the whole tap number, I thought she was ok in everything else though. No one has moved an audience (in my opinion) really since Savion Glover, and I’ve yet to see anyone “hoof” like that. I think maybe Silkly should try again. But I agree wholeheartedly in the famous words of Aaliyah, If at first you don’t succeed, you can dust it off and try again”
I think that dancers should be able to audition multiple times. Well, except for Sex, the only reason he keeps coming back is because they put him on TV. If they never showed him he’d stop coming. As for the real dancers, I think that they should come back. SYTYCD is a show that is open to all types of dancers, and in the end they must “cast” the show. That means that they can’t have all contemp dancers. They must make room for the hip hoppers and ballroom dancers. I think they cut a few talented dancers hopping that they will come back the next year, sort of like putting them on layaway. That and it gives a few dancers a chance to mature and hone their craft in order to handle the stress of the competition.
Nigel has promised (via twitter) that we will not be seeing Sex again:

Christie,
Sure, Sex won’t be back, but someone else similar to Sex will be I think. Can you say Wise Leo?
Reading through the comments I’m leaning more towards people coming back. The key it seems is having the producers stop showing people like Sex that come back over and over again. Just imagine the auditions though for season 10 where all these dancers have been coming for a while and every good audition is someone that we’ve seen before.
On that note, how cool would it be to have a top 20 of the best dancers from every season. How cool would that be at some point down the road?
I think the producers/editors need to show less of the “lame” and ridiculous auditions and more of the great ones. I think it is good to show a few lame auditions so that the audience can really appreciate the talented people (give us a bit of perspective, you know), but let’s cut out the junk. SYTYCD does not need to become like American Idol where “sucking” becomes a gimmick. Don’t show us trash and gimmicks; show us quality.
Gretchen,
I have to admit that I think SYTYCD does the best job of any other similar reality show at limiting the lame auditions. I guess the key is to make sure that trend continues.
