So You Think You Can Dance Top 10 Performance Show Discussion Thread
Many of you love when I just post a thread that will allow people to post their thoughts, reviews, rants etc about the various episodes of So You Think You Can Dance. I’m actually traveling and in Texas right now and I was able to see it much earlier. I’ll post more of my comments later if I can get to my hotel room and don’t spend too much time talking to my brother.
So, let’s hear it. There were so many interesting parts to tonight’s episode. I can’t wait to hear what people think. I love SYTYCD once we reach the top 10. Woot!!
What an amazing show!!! I loved almost all the routines and several of the solos. The group numbers were incredible. I died when Jeffery Page said that the African dance was about masculinity, because I feel that many of the boys haven’t danced as masculine as they should have. But he put them through their paces and they were certainly masculine during the routine!
That Travis Wall contemporary! AMAZING!!!
love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love Jason and Jeaninie.
That was pure magic and chemistry
The Travis Wall piece was amazing… it gave me goosebumps. By far my favorite 🙂
THAT TRAVIS HEART ROUTINE WAS FRICKING THE BEST ONE OF THE SEASON. I mean Jason and Jeanine were amazing, the routine was unbelievable. IT WAS PERFECTION!
The Travis (TRAVIS!!!) contemporary made me fall in love. Wow, Jeanine and Jason!
I actually cried. I haven’t cried on sytycd, ever. It was unbelievable – it just reminded me of every time I’ve ever been in love. And they used a Jason Mraz song that I love (that I didn’t know anyone else listened to.)
It made me love Jeanine more. I couldn’t care less about Jason before, but I love him after tonight. Their CHEMISTRY was so believable and electric (see: kapuno and randi’s dry paso doble). Also kudos to Ade (funk!), Melissa and Kayla tonight! 🙂
i want travis wall to choreograph my love life please!!! there was so much passion and fire!!!
Did anyone else feel that the theme of the evening was odd height pairings? After they put the shortest guy with the tallest girl, and then the tallest guy with the shortest girl… I felt that it was a little too much. I mean, it had to happen, but still.
I’m in agreement with everyone above that the Travis routine was AWESOME! I also really liked seeing the guys and girls dances – it was neat to be able to watch all of the girls and then all of the guys together, instead of in different dances. I felt that they should have given Evan a spray tan so he didn’t stick out quite so much with his pale, white boy skin. (My roommate and I very much enjoyed a paused picture of the guys standing next to each other at the end… soo hot!)
omg. jeanine and jason. amazing! Every week Jeanine manages to grow with her dancing and everyweek she shines. i hope shes in the top 4. shes in my top 4 for sure. Jason is lucky to be with such an amazing partner. shes so talented and she brings out the best in him 🙂
I think its randi and kupono’s time to go. seriously. im bored now.
im also kinda bored of melissa. her pointework isnt THAT amazing. shes pretty good but myself and many others have seen better. give her some krump and see how she handles it.
the travis wall (♥♥♥) piece was fantastic and on a completely different level to the other dances tonight. it was performed stunningly and the choreography was breath-taking.
my picks for top 4 : Jeanine/Janette/Brandon/Evan
The only thing my wife and I didn’t like about Travis’ piece was the “heart on the chain” prop. We both found it distracting as the dancers maneuvered it back and forth. Jeanine really shone and I think had the best solo of the girls. Like Jason’s solo, too.
Ade and Janette also had great chemistry. Also, Nappytabs always seem to take into account the particular dancers when they choreograph a piece. I may be wrong, but it seems that some choreographers have their “vision” and some dancers might suffer for it.
Early Top 4 prediction:
Janette, Jeanine, Ade and Brandon.
I have a really hard time believing the pairs were random:
Kupono and Kayla
Evan and Randi
became
Kupono and Randi
Evan and Kayla
Both Jeanine and Jason lost their partners last week
Ade and Melissa
Brandon and Janette
became
Ade and Janette
Brandon and Melissa
Coincidence?
Travis did a great job, the piece was intense and emotional. But I think this is Evan’s week to go. His solo was fantastic, the Evan we fell in love with the very first audition, but when he’s given choreography he just falls flat. He has zero confidence and looks like he is trying too hard. I love him solo and think he’ll do great after the show, but the judges have yet to be satisfied with his work.
Agree with DaveV on the top 4 predictions – at this point, Janette, Jeanine, Ade, and Brandon seem to be growing the most…everyone else seems to be plateau-ing. Even Kayla, who the judges seem to go crazy over – I feel like we see the same thing from her every week, no real improvement or growth.
I think that paso doble was the final nail in the coffin for Kupono, and I’m afraid he’s gonna take Randi down with him…although I feel like it’s time for both of them to go. I feel as though her solo was the weakest of the evening, followed in close 2nd by Melissa.
I, too, adored Travis’ piece. It felt more real and true-to-life than any other contemporary “love story” piece we’ve seen on the show – lovers do get a bit dirty and rip each other’s clothes and get into compromising positions, they don’t always plie and piroutte around and like they do in a lot of other contemporary routines!
Also loved Nappytabs this week…cute, cute, cute routine. To quote Debbie Allen “Who were you, child, a pimp wit a comb?!” LOL
Travis’s choreography!!!! >.<
i miss him so much on the show. D:
Kayla fan weighing in here. I thought Randi was awful last night. She didn’t redeem herself with her solo but to me made things look worse. Travis’ piece was awesome but I’m just not feeling Jeanine. I think that role was made for Kayla and I enjoyed last week’s Mia Addiction dance much better. I try to find fault with Melissa but she seems to pull off what she’s given. As far as the boys go, I think Evan should be the one to leave. I just don’t think he is versatile enough. Kayla made him look good last night. Face it people, Kayla executes everything flawlessly and beautifully. She makes it look easy. She’s the Tiger Woods of dance!
kimberly-
i think there were speculations that the pairings were not really out of the hat. maybe sytycd this season has such a small range of different dance styles dancers (mostly contemporary) that they have to pick on the height to add some flavour to the show. >.<
buggy –
Oh, I agree. I just thought they could have made it a little less obvious.
I know that Evan’s time is quickly approaching, but I thought his Viennese Waltz was a lot better than the Samba last week. Plus, I loved his solo! Unlucky pairing or not, I agree that Randi didn’t shine last night at all. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up in the bottom!
I was just reading the list of Emmy nominations including choreography (four for SYTYCD this year) and thinking to myself – I bet Travis Wall will be there next year. His piece was absolutely unbelievable. There have been a lot of fantastic dancers on this show through the years but he remains my favourite and I’m so glad that he was able to make such a huge impact with his choreography.
For the first time I feel like I saw what Jason was actually capable of. I hadn’t felt anything from him in prior weeks but he was great, surpassed only by Jeanine who finally escaped Philip to show just how amazing she is.
I really enjoyed Evan and Kayla’s waltz. She looked lovely and they solved the height problem admirably. I certainly couldn’t tell that she wasn’t wearing shoes during the dance. Plus his solo was the best of the male solos on style alone. That’s the Evan we fell in love with.
I actually thought Randi had one of the better solos but the girls are all so good this year and her dance with Kupono was clearly the worst of the night so I expect she’ll be sent home, along with him. It was nice to see Kupono do a more interesting solo, akin to last year’s Mark, for a change. Still it’s their night to go.
I actually found Ade and Janette’s routine lacking but I think a lot of it was choreography. For me it was Nappytabs trying to do something outside their slow hip-hop that they have been criticized for and not succeeding. If the show wants some faster hip hop I’d rather they keep Dave Scott around as he does these sorts of routines much better.
I’ll be surprised if the top 4 doesn’t include Brandon and Jeanine. I don’t know if Evan’s fanbase will carry him in for the guys, I still haven’t seen Ade do enough outside of Melissa to judge and Jason improved in leaps and bounds this week but I don’t know if he can do it again when he’s without a fantastic routine. The girls I think it’s between Kayla and Janette for that final spot. Randi and Melissa are both great dancers but I’m just not as thrilled with them.
Kimberly – I thought the height pairings thing was odd too. I would have believed it if it were just one couple but it felt to me like over-compensating. I think it was probably fixed.
Travis’s routine = AMAZING!!
I agree with all who said that the pairings didnt seem to be too random. HOWEVER….Jason & Jeanine were AWESOME! I was disappointed that Kayla, a fave of mine, got Evan who i don’t particularly care for (although he’s growing on me). I feel like he isn’t strong enough for her. He did do those lifts pretty well though! And I thought they danced great! Her better than him though!
But back to the travis routine. DANG! so good. so hot! whew!
Also, what was Cat talking about after Ade did his solo and she kept going who know what you did? I definitely missed it. So would someone who pays attention better than me enlighten me? THANKS!
The NappyTabs routine was great too! I love them! They got nominated for an Emmy for Bleeding Love! Wohoo!!!
For me the Two best pieces of the night were definitely the Travis Wall piece (he was my fav from season 2 so im extremely happy to see him back!) and the Broadway piece, performed by Brandon and Melissa. Im not usually a Melissa fan, but i thought she kept up with Brandon quite well. I could be a little biased because I love seeing things from the 60’s. I just love the feel of that era.
I don’t think the other dances were very memorable for me. The Janette and Ade piece was alright. I think both these dancers are amazing, but the choreography just wasn’t all that good.
Im torn between whether I want Kupono or Evan to go home. Kupono did not do very well last night, but I think Evan is also a weak dancer, so I don’t Know…
For the girls i think it is Randi’s time to leave. She’s a very good dancer and her personality is cute but the other girls are just better, IMO. Randi and Evan may be saved because of their huge fanbase.
Kayla,
I’m pretty sure Cat was talking about what I think will become Ade’s trademark flip. He did it again, but the camera angle wasn’t as good this time.
Everyone else, you captured a lot of my comments well. Travis’ routine was nice, but the necklace thing did get in the way. I also am not feeling Jeanine and Jason as a pairing. I liked the routine, but not the pair.
Much more to say, but no time. Hopefully later tonight I can catch up.
Love Ade’s flip! He gets soooo much air.
I have to agree with DaveV’s early rankings…although I think Kayla could maybe be in there. Of course, a lot can change in the next few weeks, but for now, I’d vote for Janette/Jeanine/Ade/Brandon…but maybe Kayla! 🙂
And I’m right there with all of you who are ready to see Evan, Kupono, and Randi leave.
