So You Think You Can Dance Top 8 Become 6 Discussion Thread
It’s that time again. Everyones time to complain cheer discuss why their favorite (or least favorite) dancer was kicked off on tonight’s SYTYCD results show. Also, a time to revel in SYTYCD turning 100. 100 episodes of happiness. Well for the most part.
Also, just a reminder that tomorrow is the presale for the So You Think You Can Dance 2009 Tour tickets. I’d appreciate fans of Pure SYTYCD clicking through the link above to buy their tickets on Ticketmaster. It’s the same price as going to Ticketmaster directly, but Pure SYTYCD gets a commission if you click through this site. Always nice to have a little extra income to keep the lights on and take my wife out to dinner.
Thanks and let the discussion begin!! I think all I’ll have to say is…HEIDI!! Woot!!
CONGRATS TYCE FOR SINGLE HANDEDLY RUINING AN ENTIRE SEASON OF SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
i now must enter the 5 stages of grief, RIP SYTYCD.
I couldn’t agree more with Nigel, I think America got it wrong.I know that it’s America’s favorite dancer, so there technically is no wrong choice, but Janette was not only one of the best technical dancers, but one of the best performers. She hit everything she was given. I think she deserved to be in the finale.
…and I cannot believe that Evan is still in this competition. Every week I think that people will finally realize that, although he is talented and has a great personality, he is just not up to the same level as the others.

i’m in shock. i haven’t even watched the episode yet and i’m just sitting here in complete awe of eliminations. i pegged them both for top four!!! noo!!!!!
loooved looking back on the past 4 seasons =D!
although, i thought the Katie Holmes thing was going to be live … what was that shizzz? aww well … i saw Mark =). JAIMIE AND HOK, TRAVIS AND HEIDI, WADE ROBSION, NUFF’ SAID.
i picked out my top 4 during the top 18 .. so far theur all still there. Kayla (my faaavourite since her audition), Jeanine, Evan and Brandon.
alot of people probablly don’t agree with that. i was really surprised that Kayla stayed … although i looove her.
Loved the dances they re-did…but I was a bit let down by the Katie Holmes dance. She did really well, but it wasn’t spectacular.
I’m so glad that Ade and Melissa were safe!!! π But I wish that Evan would have been in the bottom. I felt it was his time. Jason was weaker during the season, but much stronger last night. I guess it’s a trade off.
I was a bit surprised with Janette, but not really. I mean, both her routines last night were not very memorable, and her solo wasn’t her best (though I thought her changes she made to it for tonight from last night were much much better). Last night wasn’t her greatest night, and I guess that’s all it takes…one night.
Well, unless you’re Evan. π
Janette is my favorite and I’m upset that she went home. That being said, Tyce did not ruin anything! His job was to do the best choreography he could for the dancers he was assigned to, and that he did. A choreographer’s job is not to give dancers a crappy number so they can get sent home. He did his job brilliantly, and touched more people than we can count. That wonderful routine was meant to be seen for a reason, and everything happens for a reason! I am confident that Janette has an awesome future, and she is a class act on top of that.
Ramalama was even better when you add Wade to the mix. I realized the he took Ryan’s place. It was great seeing the bench and the humming bird and the flower…again also.
Katie may not have been live but still a good performance.
Surprised by the bottom two boys and well the girls were in a lose, lose situation. I don’t think Tyce should take the blame for season 5 being not that great…no one has really stood out to me period. I will say this I hope a girl wins the competition.
Kels: I saw Mark too!! So it wasn’t just me. Sorry guys but I kinda jumped up and down on my couch when I said Janette would be in the bottom and then she was. :[[ Same with Brandon. I am too good at predictions, but its like with how the line then up, you can just tell easier. Katie Homles was a HUGE disappointment, not even live!? And her CD was off her mouth. Haha, she didn’t seem to dance, just….move her hips and mouth words. RamaLama disappointed me, I did not like Seeing Wade perform his own work. What guy could they not get to come back that made Wade fill in.
Oh and someone tell me that I was not the only one pointing out people in the flash back video? My mother was getting mad I knew all the names :]]
I cannot believe Evan keeps beating out other top guys. Sure Evan seems like a good guy with personality, but really based on dancing, he is just not up to par. Shouldn’t people vote somewhat based on technique!! Come on, this is a show for really talented dancers to shine…
Yes I am crushed that Janette went home. She was my fav. Thanks Nigel for being honest with his thoughts as well. America got it wrong. I know that the Breast Cancer tribute was amazing and really took everyone’s focus but it was just one dance. I will also be honest and say the rest of the season is a bit blah for me now. If I can drum up some enthusiasm, I will probably root for Jeanine or Melissa.
I would have loved to seen the Emmy nominated dances from last season.
I’m not shocked but I’m very sorry. Just when I was beginning to like Jason, and Janette should have been in the top 6 for sure.
I’m surprised people didn’t realise that Katie Holmes wouldn’t be live. I thought everyone knew that it had been leaked that she had taped her performance weeks ago, but maybe it’s just spoiler addicts like me who know this stuff.
I enjoyed seeing Ramalama and the other dances again though.
Sorry, not so coherent tonight. I just watched Torchwood and suddenly the sadness of the dance results are like a walk in the park. :'(
While I will agree that the cancer piece was very moving (though not as moving as the addiction piece from earlier in the season, in my opinion), I don’t think it was enough of a reason to keep Melissa on the show. I’m embarrassed that I’m this emotionally involved in a tv show, but I was so upset that Melissa stayed. The rest of the show was kinda ruined for me. I think she’s a very good dancer, but, honestly, she didn’t really shine in things that were outside her comfort zone, i.e. disco, cha cha, etc. I think Ade outdanced her all season, and especially in the cancer piece. Jeanette is just a much better dancer all around and did no wrong this season. It seems very unfair to me, but I guess that’s the way it is. I voted for everyone except Melissa last night, but I guess it wasn’t enough.
I wasn’t as upset about the guys, but think that Evan should have gone home. I love Evan, he’s been one of my favorites all season and I love his unique style and fantastic personality, but he has not been as technically strong as the other guys. Jason has grown so much throughout the season and became my favorite guy over the past few weeks. I’m very sad to see him go.
Thanks for this website. It’s nice to see people love the show as much as I do and to have a place to vent.
I was shocked when Janette was voted off. She was my fav gal from the start. I was also somewhat surprised that Brandon was in the bottom 2. I knew the cancer piece (as well as his wonderful dancing) would keep Ade safe for another week, but I thought that Evan belonged in the bottom with Jason and should have been the one to go. I know Evan has an enormous fan base, but its time that they get in touch with reality. Evan is cute and fun to watch but is not nearly as good as the remaining male dancers.
AMERICA WAS DRUNK OR ASLEEP WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOW COULD THEY VOTE JEANNETTE OFF THEY MUST HAVE GOT HER NAME MIXED UP WITH JANINE WHO SHOULD HAVE GONE JEANETTE WAS MY FAVORITE GIRL ALTHOUGH I REALIZE THEY WERE ALL VERY VERY CLOSE MELISSA WAS PROBABLY SAVED BY TICE’S CHOREOGRAPHY AND NYGEL’S SWOONING REACTION. WHY WAS BRANDON IN THE BOTTOM 2 MUST HAVE BEEN THE DAUGHTRY FACTOR THAT EEVRY THOUGHT HRE WAS SAFE AND VOTED MORE FOR THEIR SECOND CHOICE. EVAN SEEMS BULLETPROOF NO MATYTER HOW PEDESTRIAN HIS DANCING HAS BECOME BUT GIVE IT UP PEOPLE HE IS NOT BENJI SCHWIMMER IN THE PERSONALITY DEPARTMENT GIVE THE WIN TO THE DANCERS VOTE BRANDON NEXT 2 WEEKS
Well, all I can say is y’all underestimate the power of an adorable face and the ability to put on an entertaining performance. At this point, I’m down with Evan or Ade winning (though of course I’m pulling for Evan). I don’t get Brandon. He’s good, but he bores me. I wouldn’t have shed a tear if he’d gone home tonight. And what is WITH that wriggle he does with his hands over his head after all his solos? I’m not into it.
I am, however, VERY disappointed that Janette is gone. Just… pissed. I never realized I like Janette this much until I realized she was going to be bottom two, and it just upsets me so much. I CANNOT believe that she is gone while Melissa remains. Jason I was never really interested in, and I’m not surprised nor am I really bummed that he’s gone.
I’m interested to see what happens next week! It’s getting so close and everyone has a following for SUCH different reasons, that I think it really just comes down to the routines. Evan will probably be in trouble. I think Jason fans will be pissed that Evan wasn’t in his place, and Janette fans will blame him for her being voted off. That’s worrisome for me.
On the results show on July 23rd, 2009— After Jason was told he was leaving and they played the video clips of his journey, there was a song playing in the background. It was kind of a slower alternative song, something about on and on I think. Anyone know what Im talking about? I loved that song and want the title and artist PLEASE!!!!
Also, I think one thing that people don’t realize is that a LOT of Evan’s fan base probably comes from the theater community that he belongs to. He’s not just a dancer, he’s an actor and a singer, too, and he goes to school for theater. That’s a la-hoootttt of networking that he’s got going on.
Agreed about Evan, Jackie. How does he do that??? Why would people continue to vote week after week for a dancer clearly not up to the competition? I see his personality appeal, but the time has come…. I actually picked Janette to go tonight. She doesn’t have the versatility and training of the other three remaining girls. Very cute, though and I will look forward to seeing all top 10 or 12 dancers on the tour. Next week, Melissa should leave and Kayla and Jeanine duke it out. They are both awesome.
All in all I think the 100th episode didn’t live up to what the judges made it seem like it was gonna be. It was just kinda lackluster and boring. Except for seeing the emmy dances. But I’m so glad we might finally hear the end of “the amazing Katie Holmes”! Watching her performance, I just kept thinking “what’s the purpose of this?” I’m sure they put her on because she asked for it, and even though it was very generous of her to donate her fees to the new foundation, honestly it wasn’t that good. Tyce’s choreo was amazing, of course, but I just wasn’t impressed. I think the best part of the show was seeing the old routines and remembering why I loved them.
Janette…what a tragedy! She was without a doubt the best dancer, because she truly captured the spirit and meaning of this show–not only to be a good dancer, but to go outside of their comfort zone and show how adaptable and well-rounded of a dancer they are. And Janette nailed it every week. There was not one dance where I (or the judges) was dissapointed. Her solo wasn’t the best and ultimately I didn’t expect her to win (though hoped she might). Like John has said, now that we’re down to such a talented group where no one really stands above the rest, someone is going to be disappointed. But seriously, Evan is the opposite of Janette- he has never impressed me. Except with his solo work, if only he could bring that charisma to his partner dances! He looks like he is thinking when he should be feeling the dances. I’m sure Lorraine or whatever her name is would have a time with him!
Oh and Melissa better get a hip hop this week. She’s the only one who hasn’t, even Ade got one (strangely enough, the only week he wasn’t partners with Melissa! Hmm…)
Sarah N,
We’ll forgive you since you’re new here;-)
The female dancer’s elimination montage is to the song “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson
The male dancer’s elimination montage is to the song “On Your Own” by Green River Ordinance
However, more important you can find all the latest music (and really all of the music) for SYTYCD: https://puresytycd.com/tag/so-you-think-you-can-dance-music/
Hey “Seriously,” I’m not sure how Evan does it — but I think that a lot of his fan base is probably tween-aged girls. One of the problems with Evan still being on the show is that the choreographers have to create dances that the dancers they draw are capable of doing. Consequently, they always give Evan and his partner something on the simple side. Being his partner has been the kiss of death for girls who would have been capable of dancing rings around him. For example, every partner Brandon’s ever had is still on the show while 2 out of 3 of Evan’s partners are gone.
Urgh. Upset about Janette and Jason, who I thought deserved to be there more that others. Annoyed they used so much time for Katie Holmes instead of focusing on the talented sincere kids they have on this show.
I’m one of the (unpopular) few that didn’t feel for the Tyce piece last night. So, I’m still bitter that people chose that over Janette’s evidently stronger larger body of work. Still, I can let that go to personal preference and how people felt afterwards (everyone else I know was moved).
I don’t understand Evan’s popularity. I felt he was constantly outshined by Randi as partners, before he moved to becoming forgettable nowadays. Sure, I get he’s different, but he doesn’t have diversity. I understand the words “huge fanbase” and I can respect that, but I’m completely repelled by what I fail to see in Evan.
I liked the three repeat routines tonight, and I liked the flashback vids (minus Sex).
For next week, I want to see: Melissa do some hip-hop, JEANINE&ADE (please), another Wade Robson piece and more great dancing. π
Thanks;) I thought Jeanette would beat Jeanine for sure!! I like Jeanine, but compared to Jeanette she comes in second. Melissa and Ade are both amazing, although Brandon is pretty effin’ awesome too! Ramalama was a blast, and seeing alot of the past dancers was a kick!!
I couldn’t be HAPPIER!!! I couldn’t stand Janette! I know I am in the minority here, but she was just one of the most annoying people I have ever seen on the show!
As for Evan, people here are saying, “How can he still be here when Janette is gone.” Well, simply, they are not competing against each other. Evan is better than Jason. Period! He is unique, sweet, and original. He isn’t the same old dancer in a sea of cookie cutter twigs leaping and prancing across a stage. I think Evan is great. His fan base is not just “tween-aged girls.” He has been one of my favorites since he auditioned last season, and guess what… I am almost 30!
So don’t blame Evan for Janette being kicked off. She was kicked off for one of two reasons: 1. Not enough people voted because they thought she was safe. or 2. Not enough people voted for her because they thought she was annoying! Plain and simple.
I didn’t write my opinion very clearly. What I meant is no partner of Brandon’s ever got voted off during the week that she danced with him. Of course Janette, who was voted off when she was Evan’s partner was Brandon’s partner for several weeks and neither one were in the bottom the entire time. Brandon’s partners have stayed safe – while they were his partners. Evan’s partners seem to go down like flies.
Sara,
I’m a little upset with this statement of yours, “He has been one of my favorites since he auditioned last season, and guess whatβ¦ I am almost 30!”
You make 30 sound like it’s SOOO old. I represent that fact;-)
Also, I had much to say about all of your comments. So, rather than write an essay in the comments, I just wrote a full blown blog post in honor of the 100th episode. Check it out: https://puresytycd.com/2009/07/23/my-so-you-think-you-can-dance-100-episode-thoughts/
It’s a real doozy. However, it has all the important videos from tonight’s SYTYCD as well.
Janette’s elimination was probably one of the most shocking things this season! I, for one, thought she would make it to the top four especially after Mia said she was her favorite. She had so much personality and danced everything so well. With that said, I think latin/ballroom solos are less appealing than contemp or hip hop. It seems more dull and just kinda boring sometimes. But that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t deserve to still be there! She was my second favorite, after Jeanine-who is freakin awesome btw.
I was really stunned when Melissa was safe. I know last night’s performance was touching and all, but compared to the female dancers, I feel like she has the least diversity. All her movements seem to follow the same slow ballerina thing. I really want to see her do some hard hitting hip hop!
Not so surprised about Jason although I really do like him. He didn’t really show what he could do until the past two weeks with his contemporary with Jeanine and his two dances yesterday. π plus he plays soccer which makes him extra awesome.
I really hope Jeanine wins!!! Her solo was really amazing, definitely the best of the night. And her hip hop jazz with Brandon was great too. She’s at the top of my list and everyone else is far far behind her. She’s awwesssommee
One of the more amusing things about SYTYCD is that it’s “America’s Favorite” Dancer, and everywhere you go you see just how different people’s opinions are as to who is their favorite, who is technically best, and who is the best performer.
I was surprised to see Janette sent home – never in the bottom to gone was sudden for me. She’s done well with what she’s done, and she is a performer, but technically she is not as strong as the other three. Which typically doesn’t matter on this show. Personally, I would have preferred to see Jeanine go. I know the judges talk about how great she is, and I enjoyed her solo finally this week, but I just haven’t made a connection with her.
For the guys I was so grateful that Brandon didn’t get sent home. He is technically the strongest male dancer on there. I loved that he picks stuff up so fast he wound up getting the choreographer competing against him during rehearsal. And I’ll never forget his powerful audition. He definitely got the feel of the Battlefield number WAY better than Jeanine this week. Jason is weaker of the two, and while I was starting to warm up to him, I just wasn’t there.
The good thing is – they are all on tour, and all should do well. It’s a tough competition this year. Evan is the last man standing that is not technically brilliant but has that je ne sais quoi that has people calling in. You never know what will happen next week – because a lot of the votes do seem to be going based on individual numbers – one can save them, one can send them packing!
I’d love to see a woman win this year. Since it’s so hard to pick between them, that probably won’t happen. But I like everyone left enough that at least it won’t be a Sabra moment!
Knowing that Evan seems to be bullet-proof, I was afraid for Jason, who I really was starting to like, and sure enough – he’s gone. I’m sorry to see Janette go before Melissa, but I think she would have been gone next week.
Re: Jeanine and Brandon out of synch at times on Battlefield. I’ve watched it over and over and I am convinced it was Brandon who was behind. I mean come on, this is the woman who match the Chbeeb move for move. Hello!! I think that gives her a bit more cred than she gets any credit for. I also have to say, when Jeanine was dancing that piece she did dance it like a warrior. I believe she could kick serious butt, if she had too. I think its her ability to be both strong and also feminine that I like.
rah,
Mia’s glowing remarks might actually be why Janette’s gone. Has happened a lot on SYTYCD. Call it complacency by her fans. Call it dislike for the “frontrunner.” You can hold Mia responsible for Janette’s fate;-)
Marie,
When I heard Cat says she’d never been in the bottom I knew she was the one going. I figured that was the producers doing a good job producing the show.
Well….you guys said Melissa never got Hip Hop? Jeanine got it 5 times. There are a bunch of styles that each haven’t gotten. Look, Janette didn’t get the Paderur (the classical ballet)! What if Janette got it? She would have been gone that week. Janette also never got her own style- Salsa. But don’t be all “grr America was asleep” She will get picked up somewhere. Ivan form season 2, I saw him in Hannah Montana episodes as a background dancer. She’ll get picked up. Its TV, not the end of the world.
I agree with you Sara (about Evan, not about Janette). Evan may have a lot of tween fans but, like I said last night, I think the secret to his success really does lie in the great networking that exists within the theater community. Not to mention, he’s got a LOT of moms and older generations loving him because he represents something that they can identify with. Those are two groups of people who are going to love him and vote for him no matter how poorly he does (though I wouldn’t say he’s done “poorly” in anything but the samba) because they really do feel totally connected to him. The major difference between Evan and any other contestant left on this show is that he has this amazing network on TOP of his amazing charm and personality. He has ROOM to have a so-so night, whereas the others rely entirely on their dancing. They have to worry about technique, and Evan worries about entertaining. Which is smart, because he’s yet to be in the bottom, soo… me thinks it’s working.
Besides, I just can’t imagine how bored I would be watching the show if I had to watch contemporary solo after contemporary solo after contemporary solo. Throw Melissa’s solo in there and it’s a recipe for sleep.
That’s what I like about this show…it really a jumping point. The top 12 get to go on tour and then who knows what else.
A lot of people seem to be talking about how the dancers have done all season long, about their “body of work.” However, I think that (with the exception of Evan) people are voting on how the dancers did THAT NIGHT. And, last Wednesday, Melissa did a better job than Janette did.
All four girls are absolutely amazing. I don’t think any one of them are significantly better or worse than any other. So, I don’t think it’s fair to complain about Janette going home too early. She did an amazing job. It isn’t like she was the first to be eliminated, or anything.
Stephanie:
I have to disagree that Melissa did better that night. It’s true that all the girls are amazing and any of them deserve to be in the top 6. But Melissa did terrible on their cha cha but Janette nailed her other dances. Sure her approach on her solo was different, but like Melissa they changed their choreo and music in hopes that it would appeal to America. Janette’s gamble might have backfired considering her firey personality was not reflected in the slow song of her solo. I think Maybe Evan’s “cute face” and poor performance overshadowed Janette’s great performance in the dance. It does take two in this competition to make a dance look good ( most of the time).
I think I complain that Janette is leaving so early, (even if she may not win though she could have won like any other female), because I wanted to see her in the next few episodes. Sure, the finale decides among the top 4, but I wanted to see her personality and her dancing in the top 6 and the top 4. Sure, there’s a chance she might not win, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see her dance among the best, because I feel she was among the best.
It’s all subjective because everyone feels someone else is the best. I just think Janette offered something that nobody else had and it will be missed.
Christine,
I think I have to agree with you to a certain extent. If I look at Melissa and Janette and think who would I like to see dance more, I think my answer would be Janette. Not that I don’t like Melissa, but I think we’ve seen most of what Melissa can do on the show (unless they can do some sheet dancing). I think Janette could have still brought something interesting and new.
Oh well, what’s done is done and Melissa will still be enjoyable to watch.
I just about threw my soda at the TV when they announced Janette leaving instead of Kayla. She has been consistently fierce and was brought down by Evan this week, who needs to go. As I’ve said here before, Kayla is technically flawless but bores me because (with the exception of the addiction piece) there’s just no personality/soul in her dancing. I think she’s probably just too young. With Janette gone, I am less excited to see the next few episodes.
I have a feeling that Evan will bring his partner down again this week, which is a shame.
I have always enjoyed Brandon and would be happy if either he or Ade took the prize. If Evan wins, my soda may actually fly. He’s adorable and seems like a very nice guy and good at his style, but he just doesn’t compare to those two.
I doubt we’ll get to see Melissa do hip-hop, which is too bad because she might surprise the critics out there.
Bijou,
If you do let the soda fly, please have a video camera setup and upload it to YouTube so we can all enjoy it. Thanks!
If Evan picks Jeanine, it better be a broadway. otherwise I can’t see Ecan dancing anything else other than contemporary and we’ve already witnessed some good pieces (butt dance). I wonder how Jeanine would have to be choreographed in there.
Bijou:
NOOOOO don’t be less excited! I can understand your pain because Janette was definately a breath of fresh air. Although the soda to the TV would probably be a hilarious moment. I’m hoping the top 6 will still bring about memorable dances. I didn’t buy tickets for the tour for nothing π Do you currently have a favorite other than Janette? A top 4 perhaps?
Stephanie:
I apologize but after further reading your comment, I have to somewhat agree with the fact that America is being affected by the performances they see the night before. The lasting impression is the most effective and it happened to be that political dance. Now I konw Melissa is great and technically skilled, but she said it herself, that dance could not be judged by their technique, but based on how they were able to deliver the emotion and feeling of the dance. Beautifully danced, i feel they put their eggs in the contemporary basket and completely trashed the cha cha to just focus on that one piece. May not be true, but their “assumed” apathy towards most of their criticism received from the cha cha really made me think they just decided to focus their energy into that one dance. Smartly played.
lol you can bash me for that comment, it’s just my opinion.
Bijou, I think Kayla’s personality does come through her dancing. You see, she is not an extravert and is definitely more quiet than bubbly. I think with coaching she will bring more soul and passion to the surface. It is definitely there, just perhaps not as obvious as it could be. She is a dance prodigy and has always made it look “easy.” I truly believe she doesn’t have to think too hard about what she is doing. It comes to her NATURALLY. As I’ve said before, she is the Tiger Woods of dance, IMO.
PS I do think Janette is precious and will look forward to seeing her on the tour.
I have to agree that I wish that the public would vote more on the dancers and their ability rather than the choreography of the piece they are dancing. The choreography is brilliant, of course it is, it would not be on this show if it were not. However, I think that due to some lucky picks in the choreography many a talented dancer falls by the wayside because another dancer managed to draw the awesome routine for the week. I believe that happened this week with Janette. She had two solid performances but this was eclipsed by the power of Melissa drawing an emotionally charged routine. Even though Melissa had a substantially weaker routine earlier in the evening, because her second routine was so moving she was elected to stay. Quite honestly I haven’t found Melissa very memorable for most of the season and was hoping to see her go before Randi. I thought Randi brought a bit more personality and liveliness to her dancing. That impression aside; I think that we need to remember this is “So You Think You Can Dance” and not “So You Think You Can Choreograph” (perhaps this would be a good spin off with some of the SYTYCD alumni) and remember that we are picking “America’s Favorite Dancer” and not “America’s Favorite Dance each week.”
Christina,
That’s a killer idea. Can you imagine how cool a show where we judge the choreographer would be? That would be really fun to watch.
