SYTYCD Canada Top 10 Critiques

SYTYCD Top 10

I can’t believe that we are already down to half of the dancers.  This week we get to judge individually:

Vincent and Melanie
Paso Doble

I thought that this piece was great!  Part of the trouble with the Paso Doble is that something it can seem so serious and full of back story, instead this piece was like vampires dancing.  It was Hot! Hot! Hot!  the moves were really speedy but feet were pointed and their were super fast retractions.  And the lift??  Forget about it… Just amazing!

Cody and Amy
Stacey Tookey
Contemporary

Just beautiful.  This piece proves that you don’t need super huge tricks to show beautiful dancers.  Cody was incredible and step up- I think that this was the first time I’ve seen him as a ‘man’ dancer.  Especially coming out of hiphop.  Amy was good- but she didn’t shine that way that she really should have seeing as this was her discipline of dance. So far we are 2/2!

Emanuel and Tara-Jean
Tony and Melanie
Samba

I liked this piece.  I loved the music- I loved the feel of it.  Tara-Jean was great as was Emanuel however he needs to watch his face because it contorts or his tongue is out.  His feet are a little sloppy, but for Tara Jean seemed totally natural.  I liked it.  Emanuels hips need their own phone number- good gracious!

Everett and Kim
Jazz Fusion

This piece was great as well, however it didn’t really feel like anything new and that was disappointing to me.  But I did like the pairing of Kim and Everett a lot.  They really had to play a whole different person.  Blake just said that was the best performance of the night? And Tre said of the season??  Come on- that’s a little extreme.

Austin and Jayme Rae
Hiphop
ShoTyme

I really love Austin.  I think that he is by far the best male dancer and I also love Jayme Rae.  They are both no joke on hte floor.  I believe the piece as much as you possibly can.  But ShoTyme always seems to keep his dancers so far away from eachother.  That is getting old to me.

I think that that was the strongest show so far!

SYTYCD New Orleans Auditions Discussion Thread

How about those dancers in New Orleans? I’m expecting them to be not just the best of Season 6 so far, but of any season of So You Think You Can Dance ever. Okay, maybe I’m a little biased. But not by much. Lol A friend of mine recently said a friend of theirs is on the show tonight and is a phenomenal dancer. And we already know Adam Shankman was excited about one dancer in New Orleans.

Did they rise to my high expectations and yours?

Either way, there’s no way a second dose of SYTYCD this week is a bad thing. 🙂

[After the show…]

And they brought it! Several solid dancers from New Orleans that I suspect might have a chance at Top 20. Can’t wait for Vegas.

But first, I was lucky enough to watch the taping of Jakob Karr’s audition and he was the dancer that Adam Shankman Tweeted about, as I reported on my blog back in June. I hadn’t matched the name to the dancer, but I was hoping that it was him. Also heard a lot about Justin Kenney (the b-boy they took a “huge gamble” on by sending to Vegas) from other folks at the auditions and I’m watching for him now, too.

And I’ll be watching for Diana Drexler (whose grandfather died and she was able to perform) in Vegas as well.

Who will you be watching for?

So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 10

So my power rankings started off strong then faded with my predictions for Bottom 3 couples usually only being 1/3 accurate, though my predictions for who goes home have been pretty close throughout.

Tre, Jean-Marc, Luther and Blake were judges and we saw lot’s of familiar choreographers as well as some past contestents Natali Reznik and Francis Lafreniere who guest choreographed.

This Week things changed. Top 10 means new couples each week and solo’s from all for individual votes. I am going to talk briefly about the couples routines then go into power rankings by individual.

First of All – Couples Dances

This is in order of performance not ranking:

Vincent & Melanie
Pasa Doble with Natalie Resnik & Francis Lafreniere
“Conquest” The White Stripes - Icky Thump - Conquest – White Stripes

This was agressive and entertaining. Melanie showcased legs I didn’t know she had and that flip into Vincent’s arms was awesome.

Cody & Amy
Contemporary with Stacey Tookey
“Come Home” One Republic - Dreaming Out Loud - Come Home – One Republic

There was a lot of partnering and overall it was pretty and quite fluid. Cody out performed Amy and as the judges noted, she should have stood out given it is her area of dance!

Emanuel & Tara-Jean
Samba with Tony & Melanie
“Samba Vocalizado” Luciano Perrone - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 3 - Samba Vocalizado (The Vocal Samba) -Luciano Perrone

This was fantastic. I really liked that Emanuel took the character on so well and they both shook their booties like there was no tomorrow. I was so scared my heart jumped when Emanuel charged at TJ to jump as she did a back bend… wow!

Everett & Kim
Jazz with Sean Cheeseman
“St. James Infirmary Blues” The White Stripes - The White Stripes - St. James Infirmary Blues—The White Stripes

This was creepy and fun. I loved the use of the table and how Kim was “dead” it was really entertaining. I wasn’t a fan of Kim neccessarily and all of a sudden all the judges are soo ga-ga over her… but I am starting to see it more.

Jayme Rae & Austin
Hip Hop with ShoTyme
“Da Rockwilder” Method Man & Redman - Blackout! - Da Rockwilder—Method Man & Redman

I think she hit harder than he did. Austin is such a beautiful fluid dancer I think this hard-hitting hip hop was a challenge for him. It was fun to watch though.

Power Rankings

Girls

Melanie
“The Fame” Lady GaGa - The Fame - The Fame – Lady Gaga
This girl has energy, she almost had too much tonight if you ask me, but she was all over the place and performed well overall. I hope she is safe.

Jayme Rae
“Make me Over” Keyshia Cole - A Different Me - Make Me Over – Keyshia Cole
This was fun, sexy, only she can pull off those silver spandex! I see so much passion and versatility in her. I worry she will be lower than my ranking, I love her but I feel like Canada doesn’t as much.

Tara-Jean
“Relief” Chris Garneau - Music for Tourists - Relief – Chris Garneau
She has passion and she is quirky and fun. I like dhow she was flowing so beautifully then would have sudden jerky movements. The juxtaposition of her movements fit well to the music and I loved her shoulder movements.

Kim
“Kiss from a rose” Seal - Seal: Best 1991-2004 - Kiss from a Rose – Seal
It didn’t stand out to me as anything spectacular. She was wearing a bikini top that I thought would fall off. I’d put her in the bottom though i don’t know if Canada will.

Amy
“Wanted” Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody - Wanted – Vanessa Carlton
It was pretty and cute. It didn’t stand out for me much. I predict she goes home.

Boys

Everett
“Everybody Dance” Chic - Chic - Everybody Dance (LP Version) – Chic
Wow! This was entertaining. Tap is not typically that entertaining to me but he was fun and had great moves and energy. I know most may not put him in the top but he was my top solo for the men tonight…

Cody
“I need a girl” P. Diddy - Bad Boy's R&B Hits - I Need a Girl, Pt. 1 (feat. Usher & Loon) – P. Diddy
This kid can do no wrong in my book. He is so adorable and a pleasure to watch, especailly in his element. His moves were awesome and I enjoyed it. I would be surprised if he was in the bottom, though he has been before. Me and Canada disagree sometimes.

Emanuel
“Bridge” Amon Tobin - Permutation - Bridge – Amon Tobin?
This guy is def. a figure skater. His foot work was stunning, his jumps and turns amazing and if I didn’t know any better I would have thought he WAS floating on an ice rink. Awesome Dance. Canada Loves him… likely safe.

Vincent
“Can you feel it” – Real2Real
Flawless, natural and upbeat. He moved his hips like no man I’ve seen and he just kills it everytime he is on stage. He was not an early fave for me but I love him now! I think he is safe.

Austin
“Always Midnight” Pat Monahan - Last of Seven - Always Midnight – Pat Monahan
A beautiful solo as always (he has sure had his fair share of opportunities for solo’s this season!) He has such passion and moves so smoothly, it is hard to get ridof him after seeing his solo’s, but he has been bottom 3 before a few times and it’s crunch time. I predict he will go home.

Final Thoughts

Amy did not stand out for me amongst everyone else so I predict she will go home.

Austin has been in the bottom 3 many times and his couple performance was weak so I am predicting he will go home.

SYTYCD New Orleans – An Early Look

Get a peep at the dancers from the New Orleans auditions. I went there to interview the judges and snapped these two pictures as the dancers were arriving back in the auditorium, following New Wave Brass Band in so that the show could film them arriving.

When I spoke with them, the judges were really excited about one dancer from New Orleans in particular. I’m very excited to see how my city represents tomorrow night. Hope y’all are too!

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Top 10 Emanuel Sandhu Solo

Doesn’t Emanuel look like he could be gliding on an ice rink?

SYTYCD Atlanta Audition Discussion Thread

Here’s a secret. Even though New Orleans is now my home, I grew up in Atlanta. I’m curious to see how the dancers from those two cities compare. Just a bit of personal interest there.

How did the dancers in Atlanta do? Any standouts? Any dancers that you hope to never see again. What about dancers that you want to know everything about. Let everyone know what you thought about the So You Think You Can Dance Atlanta auditions.

Personally, I really liked the guys in Atlanta – Jamal Jackson and Victor Smalley look promising, as well as Billy Bell and Travis Hamilton.

And don’t forget that tomorrow is another episode of SYTYCD. Yes, that’s 2 episodes of SYTYCD in one week. One hour was far too little.

SYTYCD Canada Top 12 Choreography Critiques

SYTYCD TOP 12

Tara-Jean and Everett
Sean Cheesman
Theatre (Tap)

Wow a tap piece… OK- so I know it’s only the first piece in, but I seriously don’t know how it can get any better.  Tap is no joke.  The idea that Tara-Jean could pick up a whole new genre in such a short period of time is un-believable.  The energy was up, the lifts were dangerous and fast and perfect.  It was the most fun and pure performance that was just happiness on taps that I’ve seen in some time.  That piece brought them out of the obscure and into the spotlight.

Melanie and Cody
Melissa Williams
Jazz

This piece was good, although I’m starting to realise that my idea of jazz isn’t what I think is jazz- because to me that piece was contemporary through and through.  Melanie is fantastic, she completely transforms for every piece.  I didn’t feel like Cody really stood a chance, his outfit was completely boring and un-inspired- but I loved his performance.  He was completely there for his partner and seemed much stronger than we’ve seen him.

Austin and Corynne
Salsa
Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin

I promise that I’m not just saying this because I think that Austin is amazing – but. Austin could have been in a paper bag and out danced Corynne.  Mia was correct – Corynne didn’t think that she was sexy at all; her moves were completely forced and totally unnatural.  I didn’t even notice that she was there the whole time.  Austin is flawless- he is strong and confident as a dancer and I feel like he is conscious of every part of his body.

Emanuel and Kim
Hip Hop
Luther Brown

I think that Emanuel caught the same disease as Corynne.  He was completely not believable.  This was probably the most perversely sexual piece, and I didn’t see it between Emanuel and Kim.  Kim totally out danced Emanuel and it seemed like she wasn’t even trying.  She is dirty and raw and just feels really organic in her sleazy-ness.  On a side note- the nose ring Emanuel?  Really? Emanuel just didn’t hit the moves hard enough – I think he needed a swagger lesson.

Jayme Rae and Daniel
Blake McGrath
Contemporary

I liked this piece, but I wasn’t as blown away the way that I usually am with Blake’s pieces.  I didn’t really get the story behind the story, and it bugged me that they didn’t use the stage.  But I think that my critique of this one is in the minority, because the judges loved it.  It was good, but it didn’t move me.

Vincent and Amy
Jive
Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin

This piece was so high energy and was really quite complicated in the movements.  The thing that I liked about it was that Amy and Vincent made it seem so easy; like we could all get out of bed by doing the Jive.  The Jive is really hard to pull off and seem genuine- but they did that and they did that with an ease about them.
