Saying Goodbye to Nathan and Noelle
here’s the exit interview from Nathan and Noelle, thanks to the folks at Zap2it.com. Both of them seem super upbeat and grateful for the opportunities they got on the show.
additionally, Entertainment Weekly has begun doing exit interviews with the cast, here are the links:
interesting note, the interviewer ask Noelle about the tour, and she’s really excited and hoping to perform her Afro-Jazz piece (I’d guess it’s a sure thing for the tour) but she (Kate Ward from EW) doesn’t ask Nathan about the tour, and Nathan comes off during the whole interview ask just sounding exhausted, and I can’t say I blame him after the beating that he took from the judges this season. What do you guys think?
Cant believe how upbeat Noelle is. She’s always smiling. We need more of that attitude 🙁
I don’t think that Nathan was beaten too badly…the judges have always criticized dancers–some of them harder than others. I remember the issues with Brandon and Mia last season, and with Danny a few seasons back. They’re always hardest on those in whom they see the most potential. I think Nathan’s immaturity really irritated Nygel because he has such talent, and Nygel knows that this competition is so much about who America gets to know and love. And I think Nygel secretly (or not so secretly) gets annoyed with how “screamy-little girly” the show gets sometimes. But at the same time, without it, he wouldn’t have a multi-million dollar show on his hands. haha
I think this was good for Nathan–learn to juggle confidence with humility–which will help him in his dance career. The fact that he was first voted off kind of shows me that it might have been Molly’s fans dragging him along during the first few weeks? I dunno. Either that or his emotionality on Tuesday didn’t endear him to fans.
I think his age affected us seeing the judge’s comments to him as a “beating” because you’re right, Beth, Brandon and Danny were in similar situations. Brandon’s was basically over once Lil C and Mia were judges, and Danny’s eventually kind of petered out. I think the thing that was big w/ Brandon and Danny was a self-proclaimed lack of confidence. They both said on multiple occasions how personally they take comments, Danny said it automatically made him close up (which some people saw as arrogance). And Brandon said on the finale last season that he had trouble sometimes with self-confidence.
Yeah, Nathan’s age can make some of us a little maternalistic (or paternalistic) in trying to protect him. 🙂 I think he seems like a sweet boy, and I imagine he’ll have quite the career ahead of him. 🙂
I actually think Nathan wasn’t treated too badly, especially compared with Brandon. As viewers we never got the story behind the issue that Lil’C and Mia took with Brandon, but we know fully why the judges were hard on Nathan. As Adam said, stating that one loves Jetskiing may not be the smartest thing to say when others help physically challenged kids learn dancing. And yelling “I thought I was hot” after the judges said the performance wasn’t, displays the kind of disrespect, which kicked many good dancers out in the auditions. Plus bear in mind, while he’s the youngest male in the Top 20, Jakob is only a year older (!), and Noelle and Channing are just 18, too. As is Mollee, who handled the tough love from the judges with a bit more humility – and took it as a chance for growth, not just dance-wise, but also personality wise.
That said, I have no doubt that Nathan is an outstanding dancer and will do very well, maybe not despite but because of Nigel’s nastyness.
Lil C and Mia thought Brandon was cocky, especially during Vegas. I think a lot changed after Mia was a judge, when she was able to see him outside of the context of Vegas, in pieces where he was showing some character and personality, something he didn’t really show at all in Vegas, which is I think why they thought he was cocky.
With the whole age thing, I think it affects people differently. Nathan is only 3 years younger than I am, so I can see where some of the problems come up. He is the youngest guy they’ve ever had in the top 20. In terms of Jakob only being a year older, Jakob has also been living on his own, a definite quick growing up process.
I’m a little late, because it’s finals week, but I think that Nathan’s age had a little to do with his “beatings.” Though I think it also had to do with the fact that his fan base wasn’t mainly people who appreciated his dancing, but people who thought he was cute (He really is).
I also think Nathan would have had a much better shot surviving given how much better he did this past week, had he been able to smile after his solo. Just a smile that lasted more than two seconds. We don’t want no teary faces on our SYTYCD! That’s what the other reality trash is for. Okay, so that was a bit extreme, and I don’t hold it against Nathan, I just think it hurt his chances a bit.
