13 Things I Love About SYTYCD Australia
There’s lots to love about SYTYCD Australia –such as McPhee’s wonderful coverage.
But here are the 13 Things I Love About SYTYCD Australia:
1. The audition rounds were compulsive. I enjoyed them a lot more than I usually do our own audition rounds. I especially love Jason Coleman’s phrase, “We want you to dance well,” which he often said before auditions and says before solos. I love how supportive the whole cast seems to the dancers at all levels.
2. Top 100 Week was intense – especially that fake out where a bunch of dancers who thought they were eliminated got to choreograph their own routines.
3. There was a Meet the Top 20 episode like in this past fall season of our American version. The dancers killed the routines, which were amazing! The Top 10 Girls Routine! Jason Gilkison’s 3 boy 1 girl Viennese waltz! The contemporary foursome of Jessie, Grace, Heath and Nick! Those Top 10 Guys! Fantastic!
4. The judges and the host! While I don’t like Natalie Bassingthwaighte as much as Cat Deely (sorry McPhee, Cat’s my first love), she seems just as protective of the dancers as Cat and I love her occasional cheeky comments. And she’s really grown one me, to be sure. But Matt Lee is my favorite. He’s adorable!
5. I liked Jason Gilkison on our American version, but I looooooooooooove him on SYTYCD Australia. I look forward to seeing more of his work on the US show this summer.
6. The couples are so supportive of each other. Probably because they live together! All that time together seems to really cement their relationships and if it doesn’t, the lack of chemistry is noticeable and they’re gone.
7. We get to see them picking their partners and routines out of the hat! Aaaaaah, we need to see this again! It’s so cute!
8. Seeing Pasha and Anya again – as featured performers and as choreographers! And it’s amusing to see how crazy the Aussies are for Mary Murphy.
9. Wardrobe is incredible! How many times have the dancers and the judges thanked wardrobe specifically this season? Because they’ve been killing it. They seem to really do their best for the dancers – and then some. I think it helps that we get to see the dancers interacting with the wardrobe department and planning the costumes for the dance.
10. Australia’s choreographers are fearless with props!
11. Great couples – Phillipe and Renee, Kieran and Carly, Heath and Jessica, Nick and Grace, Matt and Jessie, Gaz and Ivy and then Robbie and Ivy. I really liked Phillippe and Renee’s chemistry. Matt and Jessie were really able to bring out the best in each other. I liked Gaz and Ivy so much that I was devastated when he got eliminated. But then Ivy and Robbie surprised me so thoroughly and finally made me like Robbie. They go to show that there is just no way to predict chemistry. While I’m sad to see dream teams splitting up, I’m excited to see Jessie and Robbie together and I’ve been hoping to see Ivy and Phillippe partnered since I’ve been catching glimpses of them together in the group routines (for instance, Top 12).
12. Speaking of – group routines to die for! “Everybody” Top 2o by Kelley Abbey. Jason Gilkison’s Top 18 “Cinema Italiano.” Stephen Page’s Top 16 and Jet Verne’s Top 14. Oh my goodness. So many great group routines. Top 10 Guys, Top 10 Girls, Top 7 Girls, Top 7 Guys. Great, great group routines.
13. The accents. Forgive me, Aussies, but the accents are one of my favorite parts of the show. Ivy’s accent is so cute and Jess Stokes reminds me of Emilie De Ravin from Lost. The way Jason Coleman says “fella,” sometimes it sounds so sweet, sometimes it sounds like an insult. Sometimes, I can barely understand what’s being said on the show, but I just don’t care because it sounds so beautiful. But then again, I’m just getting so used to the speech patterns, I go around expecting everyone in my real life to have Australian accents. I wish they did.
In summation, my favorite things about SYTYCD Australia Season 3 are: Ivy, Phillippe, Jessie and Robbie. They’d be my personal Final 4.
What do y’all think? What are your favorite things?
I’ve been pretty critical of SYTYCD Australia in the past 2 seasons, but this year they are killing it! I watch the US version, the CA version, and the UK version, and I think that this year they are definitely ahead of CA, and UK and maybe even US.
And I pretty much agree with everything you said, except I really can’t stand Nat, and I don’t even know why! I know most people don’t like the canadian host, but I like her better than Nat.
Well, between you and me, Julia (and everyone who reads this…), I quite disliked Nat at first. It’s something about the way she talks, I think, though I adore everybody else’s “accents,” even when I can’t understand them. She’s a lot cornier than Cat, who I have to compare presenters to, because she’s tops. I think the tide of approval turned when I caught Nat’s first cheeky comment. She can be quick with a quip and has such great delivery when she does. So, she’s not my favorite, but I don’t mind her and she can really make me laugh sometimes.
How does someone in the US watch SYTYCD Australia?
First of all let me say I love this blogg thingie (found it just now).
I actually think that the Aussies has a better show than the US… I just can’t put my finger on it but the programs just has a better feel to them. Same goes for the Aussie Idol compared to the US. The SYTYCD UK was dry and I was bored after the auditions. I love that SYTYCD is easy accessible on the internet (I live in Norway and they do send the US version on our Telly every season while I have to find my favourite version = The Aussie SYTYCD online).
I kind of find Jason a bit hippocritical tho. It was totally wrong to let Don go just because they wanted Izzy off (and I’m sure that’s the main reason they did it ’cause his solo was Awesome). And while I’m at it how come Izzy got to stay the extra weeks because of the injury while Penny had to go last year with an even lesser injury (was it the pictures…?). It seems your hight difference is the downfall of many popular dancers cause they don’t have partners to match them up with… Therefore I love the new rules you got from Nigels twitter where one and one get voted off 😛 Oh, well that’s how I see it anyways.
Robbie and Jess H last number is the best of season 3 if you ask me. Jess is my favorite to win season 3 of SYTYCD Australia.
Talia and Ben has the best tango ever to appear on SYTYCD last season. This season the Tangoes (which is my favorite dance) has been a joke.
The previous two season was much better imo. Australia have just as good choreographers as the US and I hope that one day Australia gets a great choreographer from a contestant like Travis Wall in the US.
At least the magic still happens on the Auzzie version. There they force the dancers to grow outside their comfort zone and perfomances like Robbie and Jessica happen: two ballet trained contemporary dancers killing Hip Hop to Radiohead. As an American so far SYTYCD AU seasons 2 and 3 beat SYTYCD US hands down.
Why? They pick parteners and dances out of a hat on the stage at the end of the results show.
Best from SYTYCDAU:
S1 Top 12 Bob Fosse inspired routine to Blackbird (Kelly Abbey)
S1 Jack and ? Dancehall/HH
S2 Talia and Loredo Jazz to Taylor Swift
S2 Talia and BJ HH to “Dead and Gone” (Nappy Tabs)
S2 Bj and Kat Foxtrot to the theme of the Godfather
S2 Charlie and Penny Contemporary to The Fray
S2 Amy and Damian Rumba to Duffy (Jason Gilkinson!)
S2 Charlie and Talia Contemporary (Sydney Dance Company)
S3 Heath and Jesica P. Broadway to Mary Popins
S3 Robbie and Jessie Hip Hop to Radiohead “Talkshow Host” (WATCH THIS IF YOU HAVEN’T yet!
S3 Top 10 Men Showcase Pop Jazz to “We want your soul” Jason Coleman)
S3 Top 16 Group to “Fire and Water”
I would Love Love Mia Michaels to get her hands on Robbie, Ivy, Jessica H.
@PlainTom: as for the height difference I don’t think it is a factor if the men won’t let it be. For example in the US show there were 3 short male dancers that I can think of off the top of my head Gev, Brandon, and Evan. Evan went on and on about how much shorter he was and it effected how he danced with his partner (very badly I might add). As for Brandon, same season same height as Evan, lifted and moved the taller girls around no problem. Same think for Gev, he never made an issue of his height. Auzzie Robbie talked about it but he got on with it. I figure when it comes to ballroom it’s nothing that some shoe lifts can’t fix.
As for Izzy leaving the show: I think that it also had to do with her injury. I believe they cut her from the show because if she stayed she may have 1. hurt herself more and or 2. compromised the position of another dancer because they wouldn’t have been able to go full out like they should. In fact if it had been up to the judges I think they would have cut Jessica P. as well because her injury is quite severe.
@Nina: I hear you about wanting Mia Michaels to get her hands on the Season 3 Australian dancers.
Here’s a wild suggestion. Since they still haven’t resolved the Season 6 tour (to my knowledge), wouldn’t it be awesome if Season 6 toured with the UK and AU top 10s? I don’t know HOW they would pack all that into a few hours, but it’d be a nice introduction to UK and AU for the American audiences.
@Emilie: Oooh, awesome idea! In fact they could combine the countries into a special showcase. For example: have every country vote for their fav performances from their country and have the dancers ie AU, UK, CA, and US perform them. Sort of like an international special before the US season begins. I have my favs from the above mentioned countries. I wonder which ones everyone else would choose.
I like your idea a lot about them polling the particular countries for their favorite performances. But wouldn’t it be great if we could vote for AU and UK and they could vote for their favorite of ours? But I guess that would mean a world tour…
nice guess on the top 4 😀
Lol, thanks. I was a bit worried when Jess Stokes came back. Worried that either Ivy or Jessie H. or even Phillippe would be knocked out of the final 4. It was an amazing final 4 – one of the few where I was happy no matter who won.
