SYTYCD 2010 All Star Breakdown
Hola! Konnichiwa! Bonjour! Allo! I’m Marianya… and I’ll be popping in and out here at PureSYTYCD every now and then.
I’ve been a fan of SYTYCD since Season Two, I believe I started watching when I saw Jessica and Jaymz dance the contemporary routine to Frou Frou’s – “Let Go” and it got me hook, line and sinker.
EDIT: For those of you that do not remember, or did not start watching until after Season 2… here’s the dance that I am talking about:
Anyway… I’ve updated the All Star Breakdown that I started a few days back to include Anya and Dominic… I also included an additional breakdown to show where each dancer placed before being voted off the show.
All Stars by genre (either from Wikipedia or Nigel’s twitter)
– Dominic: hiphop
– Anya: ballroom
– Mark: jazz, contemp
– Lauren: contemp
– Comfort: hiphop
– Ade: contemp, classical
– Allison: jazz, contemp, broadway, cultural
– Pasha: ballroom
– Kathryn: jazz, contemp, broadway, cultural
– Twitch: hiphop
Male/Female per genre
– 2 male/1 female –> hip hop
– 2 male/3 female –> contemporary
– 1 male –> classical
– 1 male/2 female –> jazz
– 2 female -> broadway, cultural
– 1 male/1 female –> ballroom
What’s missing so that each genre is 1 male/1 female each at min
– male –> broadway / cultural
– female –> classical

Season 2: Allison
Season 3: Pasha, Lauren, Anya, Dominic
Season 4: Comfort, Twitch, Mark
Season 5: Ade
Season 6: Kathryn
Ranking of each dancer prior to being voted off
– Dominic -> Season 3 -> Top 8
– Anya –> Season 3 –> Top 12
– Mark –> Season 4 –> Top 6
– Lauren –> Season 3 –> Top 6
– Comfort –> Season 4 –> Top 8/12
– Ade –> Season 5 –> Top 6
– Allison –> Season 2 –> Top 8
– Pasha –> Season 3 –> Top 6
– Kathryn –> Season 6 –> Top Girl
– Twitch –> Season 4 –> Second Guy
welcome Marianya!! Thanks for doing this breakdown, super helpful. Who do you think is going to fill those last few dance styles? I really hope one of them is Neil, i would LOVE to see him dancing on SYTYCD again. Plus, he’s done 2 broadway shows since his season aired so it kinda makes perfect sense. The S2 boy I’d love to see is probably Ivan, but they have so many hip hop dancers I’m not sure if we’ll see it, my S4 other girl would either be Courtney G or Katee, both awesome. My S5 girl is probably Kayla. I love Jeanine, but I don’t know what they’re doing in terms of former winners, plus she’s in the middle of her freshman year of college so I doubt they’d pull her away from that. I would also LOVE LOVE to see Brandon from S5. From S6, it would be great to see Jakob.
@Margaret… I have NO idea who is going to fill those shoes… Technically since there is already ten dancers, on the male side of things broadway and cultural just needs strong dancers to make it worthwhile… and the crop is pretty strong so I’m not too worried on that end. As for the women, the only missing genre is classical and most contemporary women started dance in classical ballet before moving elsewhere… so in the end the ten that’s been announced is actually enough I think.
Neil would be an AMAZING choice, though to me Danny would work too. Danny has done some Broadway work too… primarily in Memphis (recently opened show on Broadway). So to me either would work… though that’s a LOT of dancers from Season 3 =D Kayla or Katee would be great to see again as another girl… so who knows?
To me the ten as they stand is good enough, but at the same time I would think the show producers would have another male and female so they don’t overwork the All Stars… after all they already paid their dues =P
Nice work Marianya and a great first post on the site.
I love the breakdown, but what was most amazing is that video that you added from season 2. It’s amazing to see how far SYTYCD has come from that time. I actually say that in a bad way. In that short clip, you had the choreographer admitting that he wasn’t too happy working with that pair. There was a rawness to what was happening in the teaching. It wasn’t all perfectly done for TV. Plus, the old stage was a great reminder of what we’re missing too.
Also, I totally forgot about Jaymz, but he was a really interesting dancer. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Mark was actually Top 6.
@Wendy… Thank your for pointing that out. Will Wingfeld was Top 8… so I suppose it was wishful thinking on my part =P
that was one of the cooler ways to start a piece they’ve done on the show, definitely with you, John, it makes me miss the old stage. I think they both got knocked out at top 12. I think my favorite piece the 2 of them did was the american waltz with Mary, which is why I’m glad she’s back choreographing this season, when she did it for S1 and S2 she had some really good pieces! I particularly remember that waltz and Travis and Heidi’s paso.
I’m probably the only one a tiny bit dismayed that the all-star lineup is so S3-heavy. I know it was a very popular season, and a strong one, but for whatever reason, I started watching the show in S2, then skipped S3, came back and got truly obsessed with S4. I’ve seen several of the standout pieces from S3, but I have no personal connection to those dancers.
I guess no one seems to really know if this is THE TEN or if there are more to come, but if Dominic was the final choice, I am surprised, because I figured they needed another ballroom person more than a hip-hop/b-boy. (And to spread out the seasons more, going with a b-boy, I would have hoped for Ivan or Legacy!)
There’s probably goign to be more than just 10. I doubt they’ll keep it stagnant at 10 just because there are 10 contestants. I thought Season 3 had some standouts like Pasha and Sara and even Jessi Peralta who I think needed more screen time than she got. I admit each person’s star quality wasn’t nearly as radiant as S4, there were still memorable dances that send shivers down your spine as well as unbelievable dancers who made you think “wow….i didn’t know they could dance like that!”
I predict there’s more from season 4, 5, and 6 coming. The favorite ballroom stars are tied with DWTS. It just shows the great caliber of dancers SYTYCD has.
To Comment on the Jessi Jaymz piece.
I really LOVED the dance when I first saw it. In fact that’s what got me listening to Imogen Heap in the first place since I loved this song. Jessi was a good dancer and Jaymz had some good personality but it didn’t come out too much in his dancing. Jessi outdanced Jaymz for sure but at least they both got to go on tour 🙂
