SYTYCD 7: Mia Michaels joins Nigel and Adam Shankman as Permanent Judges
Just released this morning:
Emmy Award-winning choreographer Mia Michaels and acclaimed director and choreographer Adam Shankman will return to SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE as the series’ resident judges.
Nigel seems to be rather thrilled about the new addition:
“I am extremely happy that Mia and Adam have returned and agreed to be resident judges,” […] “Mia’s outspoken approach combined with Adam’s passion will definitely add a fresh new chemistry to the panel.”
My only question is… Does this mean she won’t be choreographing this season? I remember earlier that Mary stepped down from the panel so she could choreograph…
What do you guys think? Don’t forget that Season 7 will premiere on Fox on Thursday May 27.
I like this change a lot. I think that Mia, Adam and Dirty old man Nigel will be an interesting panel. At least I won’t have to hear Mary needlessly scream because she has nothing else to say.
I am sad to think that we’ll get more Mary choreography and less Mia choreography, but I’m willing to make the sacrifice to not hear Mary’s redundant comments again.
I’m not real thrilled. The last few seasons she was on, Mia has been very partial to certain dancers and quite nasty unnecessarily to others. I still remember how ‘PURE” ugly she was to Brandon.
Well this is definitely a bummer that Mia won’t be choreographing. I would rather see her as a choreographer and then have a rotating judging seat. But it will be fun to see Mary choreograph again! And you’re right Ladytex, she was ugly to Brandon. i’m glad he made her eat her words.
I think I’m in the minority here, but I liked that Mia was ugly with Brandon. Mostly because I really think that’s how Mia felt about his dancing and his performance. First, I should say that I think that Mia was ugly, but I don’t think she was being mean. She was just sharing what she really and truly felt. No doubt dance is subjective and there can be different opinions. That’s actually what makes it so interesting. So, I like that Mia was able to share a different opinion. It’s completely boring if the judges all had the same opinion and always said it was good. Just because someone didn’t like a dance or the style of the person dancing doesn’t mean they don’t like the person. We should all be cool with that.
Yes, I’d still rather see Mia rotating as a judge as well. Plus, I need me some Lil’ C on the judging panel. I miss that.
YAY MIA IS BACK!
but since she is a permanent judge, i guess that means she won’t be choreographing which is super lame 🙁 BUT I guess some Mia is better than none at all! And I really do enjoy her critiques and commentary.
Has there been official word of Mary not being a permanent judge? I remember her choreographing in season 2.
John – what WILL you do if Mary isn’t up there hollering throughout the season?? 😉
Kayla,
Yes, I think we did get official word that Mary is not a permanent judge anymore. I can’t remember where I read it.
What will I do without Mary? I’ll have to write a little poem about that or something. I guess I’ll just have to comment on Mia’s hair instead.
haha, or lack thereof! ya never know with Mia…
That was my thought/worry too – no Mia choreography?!? Bummer. But, as long as we still have Travis… And some Wade. I’m good. 🙂
Bleh, really hate this. I would prefer Mary honestly. Just because I don’t think we miss that much by missing her choreo, and she knows her ballroom when it comes to judging. Now we have three “contemporary judges” (I know Nigel and Adam aren’t exactly contemporary, but you get my point) and we miss Mia choreo… It’s a lose/lose for me.
I knew that Mary wasn’t coming back as a permanent judge, which I’m kind of okay with. Sometimes she said good things, both mostly I fast forwarded through her. She did some really cool pieces in the first couple of seasons before she became a permanent judge. Travis actually chose the Paso he did with Heidi that Mary choreographed as his favorite piece of the season to perform on the finale.
That being said, I’m not a huge fan of 3 permanent judges. I like the rotating judges, hearing different opinions from different accomplished judges from multiple genres (Lil C, Mia, Mandy, Napoleon and Tabitha). That being said, as long as they’re not bringing on Toni Basil, I’m totally fine, haha)
but Toni Basil is from the STREET!!!
But Toni was so insightful…*gag*
I agree. The rotating was cool because you never knew what to expect and it provided something a little bit different each week. Not sure why they went with 3 permanent judges. Mistake! Although, these 3 are likely the best 3 they could have picked if they’re going to have permanent ones.
LOL!
Honestly, I love to [complain] here, but as long as the season is GOOD, I’m ok with every change.
I just realized that Napoleon and Tabitha have only guest-judged once! They did it during season 4, the episode where Twitch and Kherington did Mia’s dance on a bed and Joshua and Katee did Benji’s hustle. I actually really enjoyed them as judges, they were insightful without being boring and both have great senses of humor.
I had reconciled myself to the fact that Mary has become more and more unintelligible as the seasons progressed, so losing her as a judge made sense and honestly, I’m intrigued to see what she has to offer as a choreographer. However, Mia as a judge? That’s not how I want Mia. I would rather have her choreographing than to hear her talk every week. Something about her bugs me when she is on the panel.
Noooooo! WHY does it have to be Mia – the worst judge ever!! Such a great show – she is by far the worst thing about it. I loved the rotating judge format. lots of great comments and fresh perspectives. Mia is terrible at “judging”. She’s juvenile and her vocabulary is pretty limited. Just don’t make her a primary judge for the try-outs – her attention span is too short. She gets all antsy and even meaner.
Say it ain’t so! I had hoped she was off the show!!
L. Kelly,
If I remember right, they did have a number of different judges for auditions. Although, Mia was judge for some of them. Mia does miss Las Vegas because of a family issue.
