I Hear Dance – Suggested Music for SYTYCD
It’s all Kelly’s fault. 🙂 Our reader said:
I think we need another “What music would you like to see on the show?” post.
You see how she demanded that I do another suggested music post? Well, Kelly, here it is.
This time around, I didn’t make any big thing out of the assignment. All weekend, I basically just listened to music like I always do, but since I knew I was gonna do this, I dropped songs into a special file and promised myself when I got to 10, I’d post.
Well, it’s time to post. And this time, I’m gonna go one step forward and say who I think would best choreograph to these songs. Well, some of them. You may have to help me with the others.
Suggested Music for SYTYCD
1. Project Jenny, Project Jan ft. So Percussion’s “You Said” – This would make a great Wade routine.
2. Kate Earl “Impossible – It’s got Travis written all over it.
3. Beck’s “Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime” from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I’m not sure who would do the best with this one. It could probably be used by Dmitry or Louis or Toni Redpath in a creative ballroom routine OR, it could be contemporary a la Travis.
4. Jill Barber’s “Goodnight Sweetheart” – Has a country flavor to it, but might be a good Mia Michaels or Stacey Tookey routine. Am I crazy???
5. Paolo Nutini “Last Request” – Totally Travis. Well, I thought this was my brilliant idea, but actually, this song was used on the last season of AU, choreographed by Paul White and Anthony Ikin. Check it out:
They could totally just have this routine on Season 7. Lauren and Kent. Lauren and Billy.
6. Kate Earl’s “Cry Sometimes” – Nappytabs or, strangely, Mandy Moore
7. James Morrison’s “Better Man” – Travis again. Or Mia. Or Stacey Tookey.
8. Sydney Wayser’s “Ghost Song” – Darn. It’s not available on iTunes. Her other song “Carousel” is, though. Anyway, I envision jazz by Sonya or even maybe some funky neo Broadway by Joey Dowling. Or crazy crazy by Wade. Check out the YouTube video below (and download the song for free from Daytrotter).
9. My Brightest Diamond’s “Apples” – Either Wade or Mia.
10. Eminem ft. Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” – Lil’ C or Shane Sparks. I just heard this song coming home from work today. I usually don’t like rap or hip-hop very much. But this one shook me. I’d love to see what either of these choreographers made of it.
So, I challenge you. What songs do YOU suggest for the show??
Burning Question?
Has Sia’s “Breathe Me” been danced on the show. I think it has in solo’s and maybe auditions but any official #?
Check out Shanta Loecker’s ‘Barely Awake” on iTunes – definite Travis/Stacey Tookey material!
How about ‘Your Ghost’ – Greg Laswell. I think this might fit Mia or Travis.
i’m going through an obsession with Keep Breathing by Ingrid Michaelson. i think that could be so gorgeous.
@Jennifer: I went back and looked through the archives a bit to confirm my initial memory, which is that the song hasn’t been used in any routines, but has been popular in auditions. You’re right that it’d be an amazing routine song. Which choreographer or what kind of routine could you imagine the song being used for?
@TinyLo, Ryan and Katie: You all make very good suggestions! I want to see these routines, now! I took the liberty of adding iTunes links to your comments so other folks could hear the songs. 🙂
Thanks @Emilie, now I can rest my mind, it was driving me crazy! I would say Travis Wall – Contemporary would do it justice!
Nigel,
You really need to either get rid of Mia as a judge or put a muzzle on her mouth. She’s a talented choreographer, but she is really viscious in her criticisms and seems often to have it “in” for black men especially. (and I’m not black, so this isn’t racially motivated — it’s just blaringly obvious about her!) My boyfriend used to dance, both under Balenchine years ago and then on Broadway under Bob Fosse and Gower Champion and he says her comments are unfair, mean spirited, and not very constructive. I call her the blond bitch and that’s not meant as a compliment. Additionally, she is so into herself and what she has to say that it’s very distracting to the criticisms that you and Adam give, which are pretty fair and even handed. Although I didn’t like Mary’s screaming at all, she was at least fair in her criticisms. Keep Mia as a choreographer and get rid of her as a judge ! Half the time I don’t want to watch the show anymore because of her “mouth”, which is a shame since the routines and the choreography for them is of such tremendously high quality. She has gotten so bad, that one wonders who she slept with to get her back as a judge when she ostensibly left the show last season. You need to apologize to the public for her behavior and get her in hand ! If she can’t stop her behavior (like commenting that she told you that you should have kept the latin dancer and let the tap dancer go, right in front of the tap dancer — that was cruel and totally uncalled for, not to mention some of her other comments both this season and in the past.) Combine this with the change in your format , which doesn’t have the electricity that the original format did, and you may very well lose a good many viewers who like your show but definitely not Mia’s behavior Please apologize on the show for her behavior and get her to stop it !

I found this from sytycd Australia it is danced to the Sia’s ‘Breathe Me” that @Jennifer Suggested
Thanks, Ryan!
I’d love to hear more Stars on the show. Their newest masterpiece is “Dead Hearts”
Also “The Way It Ends” by Landon Pigg
“KIss With A Fist” by Florence & The Machine, definitely a fun song that I could see Sonyah having fun with
Thanks Ryan! Makes sense they would do it there as I believe Sia is Australian. Thanks for finding and sharing! 🙂
@Ben: Those are GREAT suggestions!!! Especially “Kiss with a Fist,” which was on the “Jennifer’s Body” soundtrack and I almost used on my predicted music list (which I didn’t do very well on, even if I did predict great songs). They’ve already used three Florence + the Machine songs this season. Why not one more great song? 🙂
@Ryan and Jennifer: I feel really silly for forgetting that “Breathe Me” was used on AU, especially because it was just a few months ago and I loved watching AU (I’m so upset it’s been canceled!). I had the nagging feeling I was missing something, but was at work.
FYI, The guy who climbs the highest on the rope at the end, Robbie, won the season. 🙂 I think they knew by Top 8 that he would, which is why he was so prominent in the piece.
I think “I don’t know where I was going with this” by Canasta would be a perfect fit for a contemporary or lyrical jazz piece. How does one get a song submitted to a choreographer or the producers?
I think that they should use “let me sign” by robert pattinson for a contempory piece. I think Travis or Mia Michaels would do an incredible job. that song has such powerful lyrics. I would do anything to see a piece danced to that.
@Alexandra: I’m not sure how that works. I know some of the music must be intensely personal choices for the choreographers. But then, sometimes, it does seem like they have a AI-ish list of approved songs. 🙂 However, we like to think that the producers scope out the fan sites, including ours, so maybe people talking about music they’d love to see in routines is the first step.
@Jessica: Wow, anything? @FOX producers – I think you have an indentured servant. Lol. 🙂
We All Need Saving – Jon McLaughlin
I definitely started a playlist for this last year. Here are the top 10 I’ve been hoping for:
1. ‘Grounds for Divorce’ by Elbow. Sonya or NappyTapps. Please, Baby please.
2. ‘Happy Ending’ by Mika. Travis, Wade, or Mia
3. ‘One-Winged Angel’ from FF VII: Advent Children. This song defines epic & is begging for a group routine by Sonya.
4. ‘Welcome Home’ by Coheed & Cambria. Either as a punk-rock paso or with Sonya.
5. ‘Kiri’ by Japanese band Monorail. Stacey or Travis
6. ‘Mordred’s Lullaby’ by Heather Dale. It sounds like a Mia.
7. ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’ by Johnny Cash. Call me crazy, but it would be an amazing hip-hop routine.
8. ‘The Cave’ by Mumford & Sons. A beautiful song Travis or Stacey would do justice.
9. ‘Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool’ by The Editors. It has Sonya or Wade written all over it.
10. ‘Mile Away’ by Capital Lights. I’m sensing Stacey would be good for this one.
Wow, @Haley, you’ve got some great suggestions! You had me at “Grounds for Divorce.” I haven’t heard of some of those songs/bands, but the Mumford and Sons would be good and I’ve long wanted to see “Hurt” by Johnny Cash featured on the show.
Yay! I LOVE these music posts…Because of the last one, I got introduced to the music of the wonderful Patty Griffin, Zee Avi amongst quite a few others. I’ve been in a music slump, lately – as in, I haven’t been actively searching for new tunes like I usually do. I’ll have to see what made the rounds on my ipod before I fell into this slump because I hear songs all the time and think, “I would love, love, love to see a routine to this song…”
I’ll have to see what I have on there…I may have some unconventional selections. I shifted from indie to some upbeat electronica music for a change of pace, recently.
I finally got to see this week’s SYTYCD episode and I nearly melted when Kent danced to ‘End of the Road’. Oh wait…I’m dangerously close to revealing my age. LOL
Keep up the recs! It’s almost 1 a.m. here so I’ll have to give a listen to all these tomorrow and then thank all ye contributors profusely. ; )
[…] “Everywhere I Go” – 14. Kate Earl “Impossible – , also from my suggested music post. 15. Kid Sister’s “Pro Nails (Rusko remix)” […]
@Kelly: I can’t believe I introduced somebody to Patty Griffin and Zee Avi. They’re two of my favorites. That made my day when I first read it and it’s made my day again today. 🙂
I THINK WE NEED TO SEE A DANCE TO ANYTHING INGRID MICHELSON!!!!! SHE IS ONE OF THE BEST CONTEMPORARY DANCE SONG WRITERS OF OUR TIME!!!! KEEP BREATHING , TURN TO STONE , ARE WE THERE YET THEY ARE ALL AMAZING. MY LIFE WOULD BE COMPLETE IF TRAVIS DID AN INGRID SONG
