SYTYCD Season 7 Top 4 Performance Discussion
I’m sad that Billy…and Ashley…and Alex are no longer dancing for us this season. But, I’m kinda excited to see what they give us tonight for the Top 4 Performance Show. What are your thoughts? Excited? A bit apprehensive? Tells us here!!!!
thanks so much for doing all those dancer and allstar recaps, AMAZING! so nicely organized š im sure it took lots of time, so thank youuu!!
as for tonight, im thinking that its going to come down to lauren and kent as many have predicted. i guess we’ll only see, hoping that there are going to be some great choreos.
also, im very very disappointed about the tour and the dancers that have been chosen. and also, the lack of neil and mark used as allstars. š
ohh dear here i am thinking that this is finale week, as its a top 4, but i guess it makes sense to make a top three. gah!
yeah yeah, I know it wasn’t as awesome as it could have been, but Mia is always a meanie to Adechike
Yup, she loves hating on Chike. It’s Mia’s favorite pastime.
So Em, you get a disco and a viennese waltz in one night???
Is it me or was that Disco choreo really light? When I heard that Kent was doing disco I had a good chuckle. Sorry Kent lovers! Like he said he’s just not big and disco has a lot of difficult lifts in it, not to mention fast paced. So needless to say, I wasn’t a big fan.
On a brighter note, Robert’s waltz was amazing! He’s really growing on me.
@tammi: I know – Marianya did a great job with those recaps!!! She’s amazing! I wouldn’t be surprised if Kent lost some ground this week, seriously. And Robert might pick up some steam.
@beth: Yeah, I’m stoked. Not. You know me so well. š But that Viennese waltz was pretty rad, actually. Lol.
Disco is always so hard for the dancers. Kent is awesome and yes, he is smaller so the lifts are hard! “worst performance this season”….give a break. I always love the heart Kent puts into his performances!
Dude…where was Adechike’s video????
@beth, im hoping theyre going to show that soon!
mia was being way too rude to adechike, again. loved laurens last black lace outfit! i had hoped kent would do a disco, but im left disappointed. he just wasnt strong enough. roberts waltz was great!
i would have like to have some solos though as we’re deciding who the top for the finale should be..
I do love Adechike, but I hope the top 3 will be Lauren, Kent & Robert. I see Adechike as coming into his own even more and can’t wait to see him in a few years. He and Katherine made a cute pairing. (-:
mia to adechike “i think you see yourself in desmond richardson”
how the hell would she know that?!?! what a stupid thing to say.
i wasnt a big fan of adechike at the beginning, but he has grown on me.
as for the top three, i think i would like lauren kent and robert, but i think adechike will get more votes than robert.
OMG he is so sweet! I’m crying watching his video!
@ABnew: I was tearing up, too!!!
He’s such a frickin’ doll. He made me tear up too.
Yup, me too. Awwww, he’s such a sweet guy.
Sorry, but I’m not watching yet. Who’s sweet?
Adechike’s personal video was a tear-jerker….showed how sweet he is….
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED NappyTab’s hip hop choreo! AWESOME! Okay, so I have to say Robert knocked it out of the park with that routine as well. I definitely see final 3 as Kent, Lauren and Robert.
I really liked Adechike’s performance tonight as well. Beautiful lines and strength that boy has. And dammit, he made me tear up when he broke down! *sniffle* Judges, show that boy some love! He’s been on their hit list this entire season and the only reason he wasn’t sent home by them was because he was never in the bottom 3…you’d think the judges would get a clue with that glaring confirmation.
WOW. loved this. loved the music and think Kent and Neil are great together. Way to go Travis Wall!
and that is why i friggn love travis wall.
with neil not going on tour, we’re going to miss quite a few good routines š
(which is why im not going lol)
My very long thoughts. Sorry.
OK, so iām ālive-bloggingā my responses to the dances.
Tyceās piece: Didnāt care for it. Didnāt think it showed any of them off well. But loved Lauren getting her attention from the boys. š
Tango (Lauren and Pasha): Steamy is right…she hit some amazing lines and poses, but the difficulty just didnāt seem to jump out at you in this. I think itās because Iām comparing it in my mind to the Argentine Tango which I tend to prefer. It was slow and lovely though. And Pasha was great as usual. Bet itās easy to do lifts when heās the one lifting you!
Adechikeās African Jazz–another instance of BS criticism. They want him gone so badly itās not even funny. So his Bollywood looked African, but his African isnāt ācelebrationalā and he looked ātiredā? I canāt stand Mia Michaels this season. She needs to be off this judging panel. I was actually angry (which is not a common emotion for me!). (For the second time this season, for that matter).

Robertās Waltz: It was a very contemporary-danced Viennese Waltz. He did really well. And thereās that song again. Itās been a popular one this season. I think he overacted it, though. But thatās my common complaint with Robert, so no surprise there. Their love for him is just too saccharin for me. Blegh. Again theyāre trying to contrast Robert and Adechike with their comments. Robert was āinvested in the danceā and Adechike wasnāt āinto itā. Mia thinks Adechike doesnāt commit but Robert is a āprinceā. I mean, Mia tells them both to relax and that they can see them thinking, but the way she says it to Robert is āyouāre beautiful…but maybe you could possiblyā¦.ā and with Adechike itās āyou need to do Xā. Sorry Robert fans, but the guy just doesnāt do it for me. Come on Chike voters.
Kent Disco: Heās such a cutie-patootie. He had some pretty decent execution there for a youngun who didnāt know a disco song. š Loved that spin at the end. Woo! But…yes, thereās a but…I donāt care for disco and he was pretty rough around the edges in some places *ducks and runs*. But he really did pretty good. Canāt believe theyāre giving him any criticism at all, haha! Iām shocked. But, again, theyāre a lot nicer about it to him. āBut I love you, itās just an opinion!ā Yeah, right. OMG heās totally adorable though when he rambles on incessantly. Hahaā¦.super cute.
Lauren #2: Dude, the Cheesman is killing it tonight. His choreography is rocking. Lauren killed that, IMO. The outfit was blah for me, but the dancing was pretty good. It started out slow for me, but the rest was great. Really liked the handwork in the middle. Love the synchronization and strength. Lauren really has matured a lot this season. But boy are they trying to advocate for their favs tonight. Itās getting a bit much now. Love that Ade has a total 80ās haircut all the time, though. š
Adechike with Desmond Richardson? Oh my love. Maybe the producers donāt hate my boy? Haha How about calling the Kathryn/Adechike Desmond Richardson dance? š So what to say? It made me smile. Loved the synchronization in the middle. Glad he got a chance to dance again with Kathryn. Of course they realized they were pretty hateful in the first go around, and now they say, āoopsā¦ā but they still canāt love him. Tyce sounded SO patronizing. Wow. And again, Mia = shush. Again with the disconnect, etc. It just gets so frustrating for an Adechike fan. At least they were nicer this time. Thanks Adam for realizing what needed to be said. Oh…and glad they finally showed his video. Tears! Holla to my fellow New Yorker! Such a darling boy…
Robert Hip Hop: Sick and twisted. Just like I like it, baby! Dominic killed it. Loved the concept and the darkness. š But Robert did really well. It wasnāt your typical hip hop, which is a great thing for Robert. I really loved this routine though. Ultimately, Iām so glad that the judges got a chance to praise Robert, you know? They just havenāt been able to do that yet this episode and I was getting worried. Hahaā¦seriously though, Adam? Rob outdanced Dom? Um, no. Now Robert did great, but not that great.
Kent and Neil. Chills. Wow. That was phenomenal. Those two are quite a combination. I donāt know if I have any words for that. Nothing needs to be said. Travis Wall is a phenom.
All I’ve got to say just another night of great dancing. I am so looking forward to the tour but Im wondering what they have in store for Russell so far he just has the dance with a Kathryn(the main reason I am going to the tour). So there is a possiblity of new dances that we havent seen yet. As for the lack of Mark on tour my guess he will rejoin Lady GaGa and finish his contract with her. As for no Niel my only guess is he already has something lined up or you never know he could be a surprise guest on the tour.
Mia is a frigid old hag. There. I said it.
…voted for Chike 5 times! I think the judges want him to be loosy goosey, and he just isn’t that kind of dancer. He’s about stregnth and lines, and I personally love his dancing.
So there!
I love Lauren Kent is sweet Robert is okay but why the heck do they hate on Adechike like that. Mia has never said anything
nice to him. They praised Jose who couldn’t dance to save his life but won’t give this boy any credit. He has never been in the bottom three yet they won’t give him that respect. I want Lauren to win but I hope Chike wins it so that he can tell them all to kiss his ass!!!!!!
I wish I could vote a million times for Robert ;(
I really really hope that Mark has something bigger and better that he’s doing right now because man have I been missing him and the fact that he’s not on the tour is ridiculous if it’s for any reason other than his personal choice.
As for the show, I wasn’t a fan of Tyce’s choreography (or his judging – did we really need two people with a tendency to be harsh at once? I miss Mary Murphy SO much right now) but it was well danced. My eye went to Robert and to Lauren though. Kent and Adechike didn’t stand out in my eyes.
Lauren’s tango was wonderful and she hit the jazz perfectly. It’s so hard to believe that this girl was in the bottom three last week!
Kent obviously got a tremendous gift with the Travis piece but since he’s probably going to win it anyway I’m not quite so irritated with the favoritism as I might have been in other circumstances. It doesn’t look like Travis is having a good year in his personal life. :S The dance was great though and I think I enjoy watching Neil play the bad guy almost as much as Neil enjoys acting the role. The disco was not great but then I’ve been wondering for a few years now why they’re still bothering with disco on the show so it probably won’t have impressed me no matter who danced it.
Robert, again saddled with Ballroom and the only one of the dancers not to get a contemporary or jazz piece, absolutely shone. I thought his waltz was beautiful. I can see him thinking too, which is the one thing he needs to work on with ballroom routines, but he looked great. As for the clown piece, as much as I love Travis and enjoyed his routine, in another year I think it’ll be the clowns I remember and not Travis’ piece. The character was a perfect fit and he certainly measured up to Dominic, although I’d have to re-watch to see if he out-danced him. Robert slipped better into the character though and made the piece more believable for me.
I thought I was having a bit of a breakthrough with Adechike after that amazing hiphop with Comfort and a few other good routines, but tonight I was back to being unable to understand the appeal. He can dance a nice solo but he doesn’t stand out to me in group routines and he tends to have this smile plastered on his face in partner dances that is just as noticeable and unneeded as Kent’s deer in the headlights look. I agreed with the judges that he needed to do more in the African dance and I felt that the contemporary was good but not great.
I fully expect it to be Kent, Lauren, and Adechike in the finale, but I think Robert fully deserves to take Adechike’s place and I hope it happens that way.
Thanks for posting Adechike’s #. I just called about 10 times. Those judges never gave him full credit for being the beautiful dancer he is. Sorry, Robert’s waltz looked too stiff and overacted. Next season, could we have all new judges please? I wonder what inspired Travis to choreograph that dance….
I cannot comment on Tyce’s judging – it’s gotten to the point I cannot stand to see his face on my screen so I hit the 20-second skip button when he shows up. š
After tonight, I’d like to see a final 3 of Robert, Adechike, and Lauren. Even though he’s local, I’m tired of Kent’s schtick. His dumbed-down disco was still awful, and then he got the lobbed softball of the night by finishing the show with the Travis Wall.
I, too, could see Robert thinking in the waltz (especially contrasted with how easy Anya made it look), but I liked the piece. I couldn’t believe how easy the judges were on him after ripping Adechike for seemed to me to be a very very good African piece. Loved his hip-hop; I agree wtih the post above – that was the dance of the night for me.
Lauren deserved every bit of praise she got tonight! Her performances tonight and throughout the competition should rightly earn her a spot in next week’s finale.
I have wanted Adechike gone since the start of the season. I think he is the weakest of the remaining dancers and just doesn’t seem to be getting any better. He cries on screen and people give him the sympathy vote. Granted the judges are kind of harsh to him, but thats the business. And it can’t be a coincidense that all the judges don’t like him. Anyway, here’s to hoping the top 3 are Kent, Lauren and Robert. I really just want Kent and Lauren to make it, the 3rd doesn’t matter much to me.
Ahhhh… wow. I’m gonna be on a high from the Kent/Neil Travis piece for a while. Some very strong pieces tonight. I LOVED the Lauren/Ade Jazz, then LOVED the wonderfully demented Robert/Dom Hip Hop and didn’t think I could love more, and THEN I DID!!! lol
I do think that a lot of the criticism they give Chike sounds like BS, but he is my fourth favorite. I still gave him one vote, lol, but I do hope top 3 is Kent, Robert, and Lauren.
Robert better make it, because if he doesn’t, I’ll become convinced he suffered some loss of votes from Adam’s claim that he outdanced Dom (which Robert did not agree with AT ALL lol), and I will be rather pissed at Mr. Shankman!
Oooohhhhh, my aching eyes. So… much… PAIN. I hate whoever did the clown makeup on Dom. I don’t blame him for using that balloon to cover his face. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Blood dripping from my eyes. But the routine? Holy crap, that was INSANE!!! It was right up there with Alex and Twitch. I only say that because when I looked back at Twilex’s routine, the choreo wasn’t as awesome as everybody said it was. Butttt it was still awesome. The only part I hated was the damn makeup.
Hmmm… Neil and Kent. Travis almost made me cry when he said that someone had recently stabbed him in the back. Loved it, but it was overrated. I’m loving Travis, and the choreo was great, just not the best of the night. But that’s just me.
– Lauren is all about the lace tonight. LOVED her second routine and outfit.
– Cheeky is going home. š I will miss him so much.
I am now gonna go vent to someone about the makeup.
Oh, wait…
@ahs: Dom’s fans (MEEE) weren’t too happy about that.
@Lola, as long as you don’t hold it against poor Robert! Go fuss at Adam on his twitter, lol š
I loved the routine by Travis Wall. And I haven’t loved a lot of his other pieces. I’ve liked them, but I find the young love theme a bit bland. But this one knocked my socks off.
It took me awhile (and several viewings) to figure out why I couldnāt think of another SYTYCD dancer, all-star or otherwise (not counting Travis, I will add), who could do what Kent did here. There have been several, exceptional dancers with substantial and high-profile training, but my gut feeling was that this dance needed Kentā¦
What Iāve come to realize is that the dance encapsulated the death of innocence ā a boy who thought things would always go his way, and the rug is pulled out from under him. Kentās face (despite itās dubious history) embodies that innocence like very few others could because he IS that kid. The subtle changes in his face as Neil brings his foot down ā in a matter of moments it goes from shock to physical pain to emotionally heart-wrenching painā¦
Unexpectedly, though, my favorite moment is at the very end, when he first turns away from Neil and his back straightens, chest out, head highā¦ The boy grew up.
