SYTYCD Season 8 Premiere – Your Thoughts
It was a phenomenal first episode of SYTYCD Season 8, with the Atlanta and Oakland auditions. There weren’t many of those too unbearably bad and uncomfortable additions (though, there were a handful, of course), which makes me happy. I like to see good dancing!
Some preliminary thoughts for you, but mostly I want to hear YOUR THOUGHTS:
-One of my favorite dancers of the night, Melanie Moore, is from my hometown, Marietta, GA. Amanda and I are both from Georgia and one of our favorite dancers is too, Kathryn McCormick.
-I am so glad that Ryan Ramirez is back!
-Which makes me wonder…WILL Alex be back this season? And will he be back as a contestant or as an All-Star later in the season?
I know there was so much else going on, but that’s what’s coming to me now. Your turn! What are you excited about or wondering after the premiere episode of Season 8?
And don’t forget to help us fill in the music from the Atlanta/Oakland auditions. There were some really great songs tonight, but I didn’t catch them all and maybe you can help!
In an interview Mary Murphy gave to Entertainment Weekly, she said that Alex would not be back. Sadface. I’m pulling for Anthony and/or Adrian from last season to resurface though! This was a solid round of auditions, I thought. I’m excited for more, and especially for VEGAS!
I was going to mention the EW.com article, but @Sarah El beat me to the punch! it’s definitely a bummer that Alex won’t be back, apparently he wasn’t medically cleared in time for the type of schedule that SYTYCD requires. I’m with you, though, Sarah, I’d LOVE to see Adrian or Anthony, they were probably my 2 favorite guys from last year (before we all met Robert) and I was so bummed that they didn’t make the top 11. I’m SO glad they’ve abandoned that format, and instead gone with one that was mentioned a lot on our site, top 20, then bringing in the all-stars when we reach top 10. I think that’s absolutely the right way to go, and I’ll be very interested to see who they bring in as the All-Stars. My early vote is for Kayla, I’d love to see how she’s changed as a dancer since S5.
Good call Margaret. I’d love to see Kayla as an all star!!

Great start tonight. I was glad they showed so many good dancers instead of focusing on the terrible ones.

it’s actually a really interesting interview. for as much grief as we’ve all given the show for how obnoxious her screaming got after 5 years, i’m really glad her health is back to where it needs to be and that she didn’t lose her voice. that would have been really sad. additionally, i’ve been watching some old videos and realized how much we missed having a ballroom presence on the judging panel. welcome back mary!
what a fabulous first day of SYTYCD!! Melanie Moore gave me chills–loved her so much! And although Ryan has never been my favorite, I do think that she’s improved since last year, so I’m pumped to see her in Vegas. 🙂
Also excited to see the two hip-hop guys who danced together get to Vegas–they were super cute and if one of them shocked us with their talent in other genres, I’d be stoked. Also feel that there were some cool dancers that we only saw in the 10-in-a-row montage that I can’t wait to see.
YAYAYAYAYYAYAY! I couldn’t be more excited that it’s finally summer.
The “two hip hop guys” stole their choreography (routine along with the song) from a twin dance duo known as Les Twins. Yes, I know that being a professional dancer means performing other dancers’ choreographies. If the choreography is technically difficult, another dancer performing it may give them merit as a good dancer simply because they’re able to do it. But the routine wasn’t technically difficult; it was good because it was creative and the musicality was great. Thus, it is the the one (two in this case) who had the creativity/musicality to choreograph such a great routine who should receive the credit.
@Sarah El and Margaret: I’m so sad that Alex might not be back (I’m not saying “won’t be back”), but thanks for the link. I’m with you, bring on Anthony and Adrian.
@Margaret and John: It would be cool to see Kayla back as an All-Star since she pretty much was one already during her season. She just started to show her personality when the season ended, so maybe we’ll get to see more of that if she comes back as an All-Star.
@Beth: Welcome back! I agree about Melanie Moore. I watched her audition again this morning and it was even better the second time around. So excited about her. We’ll see about the 2 male hip hop partners. I’m not entirely sold, but I’m open to convincing. 🙂
I know that they lifted the choreo–but it doesn’t mean they didn’t execute it well. It also shows they can learn choreo. To be honest, it doesn’t bother me all that much. Of course Les Twins deserve complete credit for their creativity, but they should be honored that someone thought it was cool enough to be included on the show. They didn’t pretend it was their own choreography, either.
In fact, I imagine this is a segue toward Les Twins being invited for a results show dance. 🙂

I’m not entirely sold on the two guys either, but I found their personalities super endearing. I love the cute personalities. So I’m holding out hope that there may be some talent under there. Maybe not, but never know. haha!
I would’ve enjoy the show had all the storm warning didn’t take away the sound. It happened at least six times…annoying
As for the all stars I think it will be whoever is available to participate this season. Also Novel has said he already considers Alex as an all star. If I can find that article I will post it.
Grandma Mandy I just loved. I laughed when she when after LilC with her belt.

@Guest: Deon and Damon could’ve acknowledged that it was a Les Twins routine and it might’ve been edited out. I wouldn’t judge them on that alone.

@Amanda: Hopefully the rest of the season will be uninterrupted. That sucks, but you know Clarence already has videos up, right? Go check them out.
I thought it was a really good show last night. So far I really like Melanie, Ryan , Amanda and the 2 B-Boys .
I hope that in future episodes they will show stronger ballroom dancers.
Where are the sexy Russian ballroom dancers? 😛 Every season needs its dose of sex appeal.
Anyways, I think my favorite audition for this episode was, oddly enough, Amber Williams. Chica is crazy, but there’s no denying that she has talent. I thought she was going to bomb her audition, but ended up murdering it.
Uuuuugghhh… looking at Iesha Moss’ face is just… >.<
Whoops, forgot to mention that I loved Jeffery, the b-boy from Sacramento. I love it when dancers are from cities near me. 😀

I loved Ryan last season and was rooting for her to make the top 11. So I, too, was thrilled to see her come back.
Fell in love with Malanie, of course. (I’m pretty sure we’re meant to fall in love with her–like with Ashley in Oakland <3.) Very cool to see Ryan again. My first sighting of her was on a vid of Mia Michaels choreography (I think you reposted it here pre-S7).
I enjoyed the turfing. I remember seeing a street corner clip awhile ago and being blown away by it.
One that grabbed my attention was Lilly–we get a glimpse of her later in the show when two or three others are all getting their Vegas tickets. She was doing some windmills and a couple other break-dancing moves but with a contemporary twist, which worked for me.
Loved Amber on the stage! Watching her made me want to get up and dance. Cute personality, but I fear it might get old fast (Molly was cute at first too).
Would have liked to see a little more ballroom–liked all the ones that got camera time.

I loved his levels, his combination of sharpness and swag, of strength and funk.
@Margaret, the season will be MADE for me if Kayla comes back as an all-star.
@NC–Yes yes yes to Lilly! She looked very intriguing and I loved her style. Amber was very much like Molly to me–which means adorable, talented, but immature and a bit annoying, lol.
Cosign to the more ballroom (love to see a sexy latin dancer combo) and I want to see some more hip hop guys who can groove. 🙂

As for the all stars, I would love Jakob to be back 🙂 I loved him in his season and I still think he’s one of the best dancers to ever hit the sytycd stage 🙂
I stumbled upon a website that has “spoilers” for some of the people who auditioned and go to vegas and amongst those is Alexis Mason, Jeanine’s sister. The website also had some input on a few past contenders resurfacing and i found it very interesting. I’ll post the link below if anyone is interested! (And I say “spoilers” because i’m not sure how legitimate this input is, so if anyone could shed some light, that’d be awesome!)

@Ryan and @Lola: I, too, hope for some more ballroom dancers this season. But, we’ve only seen two audition cities so far. Amber’s an excellent dancer, I agree, but like @NC and @beth were saying, I think her personality could get overwhelming.
@Cindy: I love Ryan, glad she’s back. But according to the spoilers @Kenna posted, she won’t be back in Vegas. I hope that part’s not true, but if it is, it’s for a good reason. Those spoilers were interested, all around. We’ll see how they play out.
I am soooooo glad SYTYCD is back. I am always looking forward to it, it’s the best talent competition on tv for me. I think other shows should look at SYTYCD as an example of how it should be done.
Great first night. Loved Melanie Moore, amazing. Hope she goes far. Would love to see more of Lilly too. Don’t remember most of the other names.
Glad Mary Murphy is back. I don’t care for her screaming, but then when she isn’t there I find myself missing her.
I am sure we’ll have more ballroom dancers. The season is just starting.
I’d also love to see some ballet dancers. We usually only get one, so in the special show in which they have two or more people dance in their own style they end up with ballet dancers doing contemporary as it’s impossible for others to learn ballet. If not, I’ll settle for a couple of guest performances.
@Kitty: I agree 100% It’s going to be a good season.
