Exit Interviews: Billy and José

Entertainment Weekly did a couple of great exit interviews with Billy and José. Check out their website. Here are some highlights:

Billy Bell:

This year you also had your knee injury. What happened?
I have a slightly torn [section] of my knee. Basically just soft tissue attached to ligaments. So yea. It kind of basically just messed up the tracking in my knee, and was causing me a lot of pain. So I went through a lot of physical therapy throughout the week to get it better, or a little less painful. And I wore a big old knee brace while dancing, and that helped out a lot.

It was a bit controversial that you decided not to dance, even though the doctor gave you the go-ahead. What was the reasoning for you sitting out?
My entire reasoning for sitting out was because I’m a huge believer in prevention. And I thought, if I feel something tearing, why am I going to continue to tear it when I can stop, let it heal, and continue in the competition? Especially because, in the grand scheme of things, the show is such a small part of someone’s career. I was just thinking ahead of time. Whether I won or lost the competition. It’s better to win or lose the competition and be able to dance, than win or lose the competition and be like, oh, great, now my knee’s completely messed up and I’ll never be able to dance.

Last night, Nigel called you an androgynous dancer. Do you think of yourself that way?
You know, I don’t really mind being androgynous. I think anything to set you apart is good. That’s kind of been the hot topic, I feel like. Everyone’s been on this androgynous case. I don’t really mind.

Who do you think is going to win the whole thing?
It’s so hard! All four have such potential to really take it. I think AdéChiké is gaining so much momentum in the competition, whereas Kent has had it. He’s had the tween support the whole time. They love him. And then Lauren is the only girl, so she’s definitely got a huge chunk of vote right there. And Robert — I kind of think he’s a dark horse. I think he’s going to sneak up. He could take it.

José Ruiz:
And what about the judges’ critiques? Do you think they were too easy on you at times?

At the end of the day, it’s a TV show. Sometimes it’s almost like you’re picked to be criticized more than other people. And sometimes it’s a week where you do really good, and you get praised. It happens. Some weeks I know maybe they may have gone easy on me, and other weeks I think their critiques were good, and I think they were right in what they said. Of course, I don’t think all the critiques and everything they said was good, but at the same time you can’t really think about things like that. For me, it’s just that I love to dance. It’s not really about the critiques.

Do you have a favorite routine?
I really enjoyed my b-boy routine with Dominic. That was a good one. It was in my own style, and it’s the first time that they’ve ever had breaking as a genre on this show.

Not even Lauren [Froderman] and Lauren [Gottlieb]? They played up your crushes this season.
[Laughs] Yes! Lauren [Gottlieb] is cool. She’s a good soul. She really helped me out. That week that I danced with her really opened me up. It just really showed what I could do. That was the first time that I got contemporary. I definitely am grateful for that.

They both seem like really chill guys. Looking forward to seeing them on tour! Check out www.ew.com for the full interviews (plus search SYTYCD for other interviews)

2010 Emmy Award Nominations-Outstanding Choreography

So I thought I’d follow up my post from about a month ago talking about Emmy nods since they officially came out this morning. The nominating committee had an incredible group of dances to choose from from shows like SYTYCD, DWTS, and the Oscars, among others. So, straight from the Emmy website, here are the nominees:

82nd Annual Academy Awards-Routines: Opening Number/No One Wants to Do It Alone & Score Suite-ABC-Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Choreographer: Adam Shankman

Dancing with the Stars-Routines: Futuristic Paso Doble/Living On Video & Quickstep/Anything Goes-ABC-BBC-Worldwide Productions
Choreographer: Derek Hough

Dancing With The Stars-Routine: Paso Doble/Malaquena-ABC-BBC-Worldwide Productions
Choreographers: Chelsie Hightower and Derek Hough

So You Think You Can Dance-Routines: Gravity/Addiction & Koop Island Blues & One-Fox-Dick Clark Productions and 19 Entertainment
Choreographer: Mia Michaels

So You Think You Can Dance-Routine: Fear-Fox-Dick Clark Productions and 19 Entertainment
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey

So there we have it, 3 noms for alums/choreographers of SYTYCD. It looks like they changed up the nominating procedure this year, I can’t tell if Mia Michaels has 3 noms for her 3 different pieces from S5 or if they’re just one big nomination. Yay for Chelsie Hightower! If you guys haven’t seen the Paso she choreographed with Derek, you should check it out, it’s pretty awesome (embedded below)

I’m psyched to see they nominated Addiction (embedded below), very much deserved, but I’m a little iffy about the other 2. Gotta love the Butt Dance, but Travis deserved that nod for “If It Kills Me”. What about Napoleon and Tabitha/Dmitry for the awesome Calle Ocho routine (even though I’ve permanently banned that song b/c I heard it so many times). Fear (embedded below), Stacey Tookey’s piece, is the one she did in S6 W2 for Legacy and Kathryn, and while I love that one as well, I would have rather seen that one go to Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson for the piece they did with Kathryn and Jakob in the finale, and partially because they got screwed out of a nod for “Imagine” in S4.

Fear-Kathryn and Legacy

Addiction-Kayla and Kupono (from the finale, Kayla danced her heart out just after being eliminated from the competition, the judges show her some major love)

Chelsie and Derek’s Paso (the guy in the middle on the guitar, Mark Ballas, was supposed to dance it with them but hurt his knee the night before, they had to rechoreograph the whole thing for the two of them)

An interesting dilemma…

With Christina’s departure last night, the producers have been left with a rather interesting dilemma. As of now, there are 6 guys and 3 girls left, which means 3 All-Star boys WON’T be dancing next week. This is a personal opinion, but I’m fonder of the guy all-stars than the girls. Don’t get me wrong, I love Allison and Kathryn and Courtney, but something was definitely missing on Tuesday night without the smiles and personalities (and dancing, of course) of Twitch and Neil on stage.

Nigel said before the season started that there wouldn’t be any dances done by two people of the same gender until the finale, but I wonder if he took into account the idea of the girls getting picked off before the boys. I obviously don’t have a way to get in touch with Nigel, but if I could, I would urge him to change his mind. Some incredibly memorable dances have been two guys (or two girls). Who could forget “Tranji” or “The Dueling Princes”? Or, my personal favorite, the Russian Trepak with Twitch and Joshua from the S4 finale. If they could find a way to move beyond the “dueling” storyline, I feel like the audience would embrace it. The boys of S7 are so strong this year, and it would be a shame to have these talented dancers and fantastic All-Stars not dancing.

What do you guys think? I hated not seeing Twitch and Neil dance this week, and I don’t like thinking that I won’t get to see Pasha or Mark or Dominic or Ade dancing next week. Their personalities are part of what makes this show so fun.

Who Wants to Talk Emmys?!!

So I know that the Emmy nominations don’t come out for another month, but Mollee Gray tweeted yesterday that her waltz with Jakob was nominated (I think she meant it’s been submitted for a nomination) but it got me thinking, for as much flack as seasons 5 and 6 have gotten in comparison to the first 4 seasons, there have been some incredible pieces that deserve recognition. Since 5 and 6 occurred during the same television season, there will most likely be a combination of nominations for both. Here are the pieces I’d love to see nominated:

Jason and Jeanine “If It Kills Me” Travis Wall-this was Travis’s coming out party as a choreographer, with Jeanine and Jason as the hosts.

Jakob and Kathryn “At This Moment” Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson-it was a crime that these 2 legends weren’t nominated in season 4 for Imagine with Katee and Will, good thing they hit the jackpot again with Kathryn and Jakob. As with Imagine, there was no backstory, but you don’t need one, the dancing speaks for itself.

SYTYCD All-Stars on Ellen 5.27.10

Mark and Lauren had tweeted that they were going to be dancing on ELLEN with some of the all-stars, but I was in class so I missed seeing it live. Thank goodness for YouTube! Here’s the clip, it features Mark, Allison, Twitch, Lauren, Comfort, Dominic and Kathryn. Missing 🙁 are Neil, Courtney, Ade, Anya and Pasha.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching them all dance together. Allison looks AMAZING for having had a baby!! Wow. I wish we could have seen all 12 of them but this was really fun.

TVGuide.com interview with Cat Deeley

another article popped up this morning with the adorable Cat Deeley talking about the epicness that is going to be season 7. She mentioned one new change that I don’t think I’d seen about this season. Here’s the quote:

TVGuide.com: What else is in store for the new season?
Deeley: Before we would prerecord the performance show and then go live on the results show, but this year we’re actually going live with both shows. Basically anything can happen and it will. Just from experience there’s always going to be those moments where something’s going to go wrong or a piece of scenery is going to come down. No matter what happens, mistakes can happen, accidents, but whatever happens as long as you deal with it in the right way, the audience will love to see it. It feels as though they’re part of the gang; it makes it very real.

I think this is a really good idea and I think Cat explains it really well. I’m counting down…t-2.5 hours here out west! hope you east coasters are having fun!! yay season 7!!
