Memphis and Dallas Auditions

First off I would like to say Congratulations to Cat Deeley, for winning the Critics Choice award for best Reality TV Show Host. Maybe the Emmy’s will take notice this year.

There was a whole lot of information to take in the first three minutes of the show. I have found an Interview with Nigel that explains a little more of what we can expect this season and I’m working on a post that will be up later this week.

Lets start with the Judges. Obviously without Mary Murphy the show doesn’t seem the same and let’s be honest no one can replace her. I’m thinking it may take another episode for me to really warm up to this panel of judges but they seem to have great chemistry so far.Paula for me has always been better suited for judging this show compared to Paula. She got a case of the giggles at one point but not sure what caused them. I loved how she just picked up the phone and called Richard Simmons to tell him about Kiosh. Jason is definitely the laid back one of the bunch, but leave it to Nigel to put him on the spot several times tonight. Jason got a little tongue-tied trying to find the right words to say when it came to the acts that weren’t his thing. His impromptu performance of Talk Dirty probably made those kids day.

MEMPHIS

Memphis had some talent and some characters show up to the auditions. Day two had some technical difficulties when the power went out in downtown Memphis due to a fire. So happy they were able to find a generator so the dancers could audition. By the end of the auditions, 23 dancers from team stage and 20 dancers from team street move on to the next round in Vegas.

Standouts…I at least got the first names of the dancers written down.

Team Stage: Peyton and Jordan (Jo Jo)
Team Street: Andre Rucker and Ladia Yates. Courtney Barnes makes his return and yes he is an entertaining character but not right for the show.

DALLAS

Dallas from what I can tell had more team stage standouts. Hard to really see talent in a montage but it helps with the timing of the show. Anyways, moving on to Vegas are 20 dancers from team stage and 17 dancers from team street.

Standouts

Team Stage: Guillermo, Jaclyn Hamrick, Lily Leyva and Edson
Team Street: Steven Ban (Nerdy Hip Hop) and Vishonda Sims
Total # of dancers through to Vegas: Team Stage: 43 Team Street: 37

So what are your thoughts? Are you team stage or team street?

So You Think You Can Dance Season 11 Premiere Date

Fox just announced the premiere date for our beloved SYTYCD Season 11. The SYTYCD 11 season will start with a 2 hour premiere on Wednesday, May 28 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Cat Deeley is back as host and Nigel and Mary will still be the resident judges. I wonder what other twists they might throw in this year. I know they cut out the Vegas Week this year since I tried to attend, but they told me it wasn’t happening. I think they might be doing an LA week this year instead.

Just call me Charlie...but where are my angels?

Travis Wall Choreograph’s Caesars Palace’s Buffet Music Video

Most of you know that I’m biased to Las Vegas since I live here, but one thing I love about the casinos in Las Vegas is that they aren’t afraid to stretch how they celebrate. As one of my Italian friends told me, “Las Vegas is excess.” With that in mind, it shouldn’t be surprising that for the 1st birthday of Caesars Palaces’s Baccanal Buffet they would have Travis Wall choreograph, direct and star in a special video performance at the Buffet. Plus, he brought a long a number of familiar faces: Nick Lazzarini, Jaimie Goodwin, Kyle Robinson, Kayla Radomski, Dom Palange, and Kayla Kalbfleisc. If you haven’t seen this video, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I think this is just a preview of the full video. At least I hope that’s the case. I’d love to see more of Kayla Radomski. It’s been too long since I’ve enjoyed her dancing.

SYTYCD Top Twenty perform for the First Time

SYTYCD Top Twenty
I am so excited for this season. I’m not sure who’s going to win but I’m rooting for Malece and Jade. The opening dance was so amazing! I loved the look at behind the scenes as well as the choreographer’s cameos. The hallway scene was my favorite. Side note: NAPPYTABS BABY! And I’m excited to see Wayne be a judge again. I’ll be touching base on what I think are the best and worst routines of the night.

Travis Wall “Love is Blind”
I love Jasmine M so very much. Her hair is amazing. Travis is very clever. This could have been really bad. I’m very impressed with how well they danced together without seeing. Do you really think they couldn’t see though? That’s a huge risk to have blind dancers. Their partnering was so beautiful. Her legs are just so beautiful. They really had the emotion of being in love. I really loved it.

Travis Wall “Silver screen”
Malece and Jade is a stellar combination. I love how elegant and smooth she can be and still so powerful against Jade. Travis did such a good job blending both their styles together. Such a great, great piece.

Sean Cheeseman Afro jazz
Animator + Ballroom + Afro jazz? Say what? I was really scared about this one to be honest. It had me mesmerized. I like that there was some isolations thrown in there for BluPrint. It was so powerful and joyful at the same time.

Sonya Tayeh “Bottom of the River”
I love Sonya. She’s my favorite choreographer of all time. Jasmine H and Aaron are power houses alone. Together they are beastly. I almost feel bad for the other couples. She is all leg and he is all muscle. Her turns seemed a bit off to me. The whole piece was very Sonya and I loved all of it.

Final Thoughts
I think the hip hop groups are in trouble as well as the jive. Jasmine H and Aaron and Malece and Jade are the couples to beat. It started as a very good season and I am excited to see how it progresses. I will not be happy when any of them leave.

New SYTYCD Voting with SuperVote

Beginning tonight, SYTYCD has a new method for handling votes for the dancers on the show. They’ve announced what they’re calling a SuperVote. A SuperVote is where you “cast multiple votes online at one time.”

Viewers can vote via any of these destinations: www.fox.com/dance, the FOX NOW app (data and message ratesmay apply for app download and use) and Facebook. To SuperVote, fans canallocate votes for one finalist or multiple finalists, for a total of 20 votes(across all online voting destinations), and in a unique interactiveexperience, they can adjust their vote selections as performances happen during the show. When the voting window officially opens, fans can submit their final votes – all at once.

It’s also interesting that they’re requiring a Facebook account to be able to vote as well. I wonder how many fake Facebook accounts will be created tonight. Yes, the voting is still restricted to the US.

At the end of each performance show, the toll-free and text message systems will be open for at least two hours per time zone and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE viewers will be able to vote for their favorite finalist(s) via the toll-free telephone numbers (855 GO HIM 01, 02 and 855 GO HER 01, 02, etc.) Additionally, wireless customers can use their cell phones to vote by texting the name of the dancer as shown on-screen to the short code 83676 to vote for the finalist of their choice.

What do you think of these changes to the voting system? I think the SuperVote is pretty cool. It basically makes what people were doing with their 20 votes much easier. So, not much change there other than a much better voting experience. I expect many other shows will follow something similar.
