The Black Gold Experience

Our reader Jena asked for and got the tickets to see Black Gold at The Fillmore in New York City.

She wrote me after her experience:

What an amazing show! I knew I would enjoy it after your postings, I didn’t know anything else about them beside the song on SYTYCD. They are very talented and I don’t expect them to be opening for others for long. I met with Eric after the set and he was a sweetheart, of course I mentioned you and the site. He said that is so amazing and was so glad we enjoyed the show. I need to upgrade my camera for better pics but the VIDs are pretty decent. They played a brand new song for the first time last night called heaven come back. I wish they could have played longer.

She uploaded several videos and photos to Flickr so we can check them out.

Earlier, our reader Ashley B. wrote:

Thanks Emilie for the Black Gold tickets. We made it to the Atlanta show last weekend and it was a lot of fun. Black Gold, the Young Veins, and Rooney have the perfect sound for summer! The music was exciting but also had a laid-back, rest-in-the-sun feel to it. The bands all put on a great show with a lot of energy! My only wish was that it was an outdoor venue – that would be icing on the cake. Readers – take advantage of the free tixs, it is completely worth it!

You can read about my experience here and don’t forget that there are some tickets available for Black Gold’s tour dates:

Sat 7/17 S. Hackensack, NJ School of Rock – I know a reader wants these tickets, but he needs to send me his name asap so I can get it to the Red Bull Records folks. Otherwise, it’s first come, first serve!

Sun 7/18 New Haven, CT Toad’s Place

Thu 7/22 Poughkeepsie, NY The Chance

Thanks, again, to Red Bull Records for making our Black Gold experiences possible.

SYTYCD Season 7 Top 7 Results Thoughts

Tonight’s episode. Sigh. Season Seven. Sigh. Okay, let’s do this.

-I loved Tyce’s Broadway Group routine tonight. I have a couple of thoughts about mixing the All-Stars and contestants, though. Part of me wonders if the contestants are getting to fully shine with all this sharing of the stage with All-Stars. BUT, I’m glad to see my favorites dancing, no matter how and when. Kathryn and Lauren really stood out to me, as well as Neil, Mark and Ade. Lauren was the only contestant who really stood out on her own to me.

-Loved that Cat was brought in on the couch by Adechike and Jose. πŸ™‚ She’s so cute.

-The first two contestants came up – Kent and Lauren holding hands. Hmmm. First thought was this was confirmation that my #1 and #2 slots were correct in the Power Rankings last night. Cause no way were they sending either of the first two to Bottom 3 the way they did last week. Anyway, they were cute when Cat said the person in the bottom three wasn’t on the stage. Way to drag out the obvious, everyone.

-The Dizzy Feet/Mary Murphy dancing kids were cute. The girl seemed a little weirded out by all the attention, but that Fernando – he’s gonna be on the show in about 5 or 6 years. πŸ™‚ I thought it was cute that Cat arm-wrestled him and even cuter than she let him win.

-Second pairing of contestants comes on stage – Billy and Adechike. I kinda had a weird feeling Billy was gonna be in the bottom again, even though I think Adechike deserves it more, even with that great contemporary last night with Kent.

-When Robert and Jose are brought on stage, I have another series of weird thoughts. Looking at Jose’s face, I think…somebody’s been reading the Internet. And I saw Robert’s face and I thought… “whoa, he looks really worried, I wonder if there’s ANY chance Ashley’s injury isn’t as serious as they thought.” But, then things went back to what I expected (and hoped, I have to admit). Robert’s safe and Jose’s in the Bottom 3.

-About this point, I’m realizing we haven’t really seen Ashley (unless I missed it) like we did with Alex, emotional in the crowd. Hmmm.

-I’m gonna get a lot of heat for this, but I wasn’t keen on the Alvin Ailey dancers Jamal and Rachel. First, I hated the music. I went through about a nanosecond of a Laurie Anderson phase and then I wondered what I’d been thinking. That and the costumes – but neither of those are J&R’s fault. They danced beautifully. But I wasn’t feeling either of those aesthetic things and I really wasn’t feeling how they each kinda lay or sat completely prone and still while they other danced. Just not my bag. Sorry, folks.

-I DID love seeing Twitch and Comfort in the “rewind” “Forever” dance from Season 4. Thanks to our reader Kayla for the term. πŸ™‚ It was even better this time and really solidified for me how much Comfort’s grown since her season and that she really does deserve to be an All-Star.

-Billy’s solo was very much like all his others. Only, there did seem to be a fierceness in his eyes that isn’t always there. A digging in.

-Jose’s was fast and furious, as the judges said. Yet. Yet. Oh, Jose. I’m sorry. You’re so sweet and I felt for you when you said that you expected to be in the bottom 3 every week. But you need a lot more training before you can match those All-Stars. Maybe you would have had a steeper “growth journey” in another season, but in this one, you’ve been extremely lucky to get this far. It’s sad – but wise of you! – that you recognize this.

-SOOO COOOL to have Christina Perri performing “Jar of Hearts” Jar on the show, since our love for her single enabled her to quit her job and concentrate on her music. I love that we all contributed to her career. It really gives me hope that we may see Black Gold on to perform “Shine” Shine. I’m thinking they can do the very last elimination live with all the eliminated dancers dancing as they perform. That’d be cool, like it was UBER cool to see Allison and Neil dancing to Christina’s song. Highlight of the night for me.

-There’s Ashley. Finally. Blah blah blah from the judges. WAIT. Nigel talks about Michael Jackson and kinda refers to him in the present tense. Is Nigel one of those who believe MJ is still alive somewhere? Or just that his spirit is always with us and hence, present? Hmmm.

-Ashley needs 3-5 weeks of rest, so she’s out. Yup, I knew it. Sad. But, at least the mentioned that they want her healed up for the tour…

-…which will include SEASON 6, SEASON 7 AND ALL-STAR DANCERS!! Hurrahhh! Probably, some dancers (ahem, Jakob) have gotten contracts since their seasons and so won’t be available for the tour, so they’ll be able to include the best of the two seasons. And with Alex unable to perform…

-Awww, Cat kinda whisperes, “We want you on the tour. We want you to get better.” I love Cat. And she refuses to let Ashley apologize to us for being injured. LOOVE CAT. πŸ™‚

-Awww, Ashley is crying so hard she can barely talk. Ah, Ashley, you’re my favorite. Get well for the tour.

That it for me. How about you?

Black Gold Thinks YOU Can Dance

My contact at Red Bull Records (who is a HUGE SYTYCD fan! shhhh!) just sent me the coolest thing – a special offer regarding Season 7’s elimination song “Shine” – Shine.

Black Gold want to see your best dance moves. Post a video of you, your friends, or you and your friends dancing to “Shine.” The videos will be judged based on creativity, originality, humor, vibe and number of YouTube views rather than dance expertise, so all are welcome and encouraged to participate. One winner will be selected to receive a series of dance lessons from a local dance school in their hometown.

Check out the first submitted video, which is guaranteed to pick your day up out of the doldrums. Warning – will make you smile and laugh out loud.

You can submit YOUR video and watch the others here.

Can SYTYCD Save the Music Industry?

I just caught this great article about how sales from songs featured on t.v. shows are helping the music industry recover a bit from the free download craze.

As an example, the article specifically mentions Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” Jar which was featured on SYTYCD and has done very well for itself. It was featured in the Billy-Kathryn Stacey Tookey contemporary on the Top 9 performance show.

Here’s the Christina Perri section from the article:

A more recent example is Christina Perri’s song “Jar of Hearts,” which was plucked from relative obscurity by Fox’s hit show, So You Think You Can Dance in early July. Perri, a young singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, has no recording contract and few songs available to the public. Within hours of the song’s use in a dance number on the show, it was rushed onto iTunes and Amazon, where it rocketed into the top 20. “Christina Perri” also become Google’s top-ranked trending search term.

Perri learned about the song’s use on the show after a long, hard day waiting tables at a cafe in Hollywood. Now, she plans to quit her job to focus on music. (You can see a performance of the song and hear the background story from Christina Perri at Cambio.)

See full article from DailyFinance:

Click through on the Cambio performance/interview. It’s a total must-see for the low-down on how Christina found out her song was in the Top 10 on iTunes. And FYI, we made that happen, y’all. All us dance/music fans. πŸ™‚

If you like “Jar of Hearts,” you might like “November” November. The singer, Lindsay Rae Spurlock, is a friend of mine and I’d love for her to be featured on the show, like it was featured on Real World – only this would be way better cause there’d be dancing, too. πŸ™‚

And don’t forget our friends Black Gold. They’re psyched that “Shine” Shine is featured as the elimination song this season and would love to perform on the show. The lead singer told me he’d love to have all the eliminated dancers perform with the band. πŸ™‚ He might have promised there’d be moonwalking and musical spoons, as well.

I think SYTYCD should just name us their official music site. πŸ™‚

Black Gold Shines Part 4

So, in Part 3, I promised you more surprises and presents, didn’t I?

“What more is there?” you might ask. First, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to each and every one of Black Gold‘s remaining tour dates (thanks to Red Bull Records!). All you have to do is be the first one to ask for them in the comments of the ticket giveaway post.

Then, I posed an interview with Eric Ronick, the lead singer of Black Gold, where he says he’ll moonwalk with all the eliminated SYTYCD dancers if FOX will have Black Gold on the show. Sounds pretty cool to me.

And if that weren’t enough, in Part 3, I posted three (horrible quality on my part, incredible quality on their part) songs from their New Orleans show, including “Shine,” the farewell song on SYTYCD right now.

But that is not all. No, sirree. There’s more.

As part of the Eureka Summer Tour (Rooney, Black Gold, Young Veins), there is a Tweet-for-download offer that I’ve already taken advantage of, so you know it’s easy and free. Just click on the link and check out the widget in the top right corner. You can use that to post on Facebook or Twitter and you’ll get a free download of three songs. “Shine” by Black Gold, “I Don’t Wanna Lose You” by Rooney and “Change” by The Young Veins.

Red Bull Records has also given us a widget where you can stream “Shine” all you want. Check it out:

Enjoy all the presents!!

Black Gold Shines Part 3

Keep in mind that the quality of my dinky camera is very, very poor. But maybe these will whet your appetite and make you want to see Black Gold for yourself.

This is the first song of the set, “Idols”:

This was around the middle of their set and really got the crowd energized, “Breakdown”:

This, of course, is Black Gold’s song “Shine,” Rush which has been appearing on SYTYCD as the farewell song:

There were two more songs after “Shine,” which I didn’t record. After the show, I spent some more time with the band, including Alastair, while Young Veins and then Rooney played. Jason Schwartzman came up to play drums with the band, which includes his brother Robert, of course. He shredded a drum stick, which ended up going home with a girl I met at the show. πŸ™‚

I closed down The Republic with the members of Black Gold and some of Young Veins, but it was soon time for me to turn into a pumpkin since I’d have to be at work in less than 5 hours!

That’s it for my night with Black Gold – but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a few more surprises and presents up my sleeves. Stay tuned!

Black Gold Shines Part 2

Last night, I was lucky enough to catch Black Gold‘s New Orleans appearance with Rooney and Young Veins. It kind of all came together when their label, Red Bull Records, saw all of our talk here on the site and asked if I’d like to meet the band and catch the show.

So, even though I had to be at work this morning at 6:30 a.m. (!) I ventured out to hang with Black Gold and I did not regret it.

Nick, Black Gold’s tour manager, introduced me to lead singer Eric Ronick and even though we’d only just met a few minutes before, we had no trouble being incredibly silly together in this video interview. Forgive all my giggling. It’s Eric’s fault.

The video’s very dark, but I think it does a good job of showing what the venue was like – moody black and red lighting. Just pretend you’re sitting cozy on a leather couch in the merchandise section with Eric like I was last night.

My first experience with bassist Kerry Wayne-James is recorded in the middle of my interview with Eric. A few minutes after this recording, I met percussionist/guitarist/vocalist/song writer Than Luu, though our meeting was regrettably not recorded. It was epic, let me tell you. (I didn’t meet the last band member, Alastair Paxton, till after the show.) After chatting with Eric and Than for a few minutes (during which, they gave me a cd and a t-shirt!), the guys had to make their way to the stage for their performance.

And that brings us to the end of Part 2. Stay tuned!! More surprises later!

Don’t forget to comment to win tickets to the rest of the Black Gold tour dates while you’re waiting to read about the rest of my night with the band. πŸ™‚

Win Tickets to the Black Gold Tour

I’ve just gotten word from Black Gold’s label Red Bull Records that they’d like our readers to have the opportunity to win tickets to the remaining dates on Black Gold’s tour with Rooney and The Young Veins.

I wrote last night that I was going to the show and I’ll post my review soon. The short version of my review is YOU HAVE TO GO if you get the chance.

Here’s the deal – the FIRST person to write in the comments requesting tickets to a particular city wins a pair for that city’s show. Keep in mind that neither Red Bull Records nor PureSYTYCD can pay any travel costs or any other associated expenses. But you will have the chance to go with a friend to a phenomenal show. And I speak from experience – PHENOMENAL. You’ll read all about it soon.

We here at PureSYTYCD ask only that you send us your concert review and tell us and your fellow readers all about the show – but have no fear, it can be really informal. As far as I’m concerned, all of our writers are eligible for tickets as well since I’ve given nobody warning we’re doing this. πŸ™‚

Check out the dates and let us know in the comments. FIRST commenter per city wins a pair.

Black Gold Shines

So…you know that farewell song everybody loves? “Shine” Rush by Black Gold?

Well, it turns out they’re playing in New Orleans, where I live, tonight and I’m going to talk to them after the show.

Let me know if there are any burning questions you’d like answered. There’s only a few hours, but I’ll check back before I leave for the show.
