So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 18 Results Show

Leah Miller opened the show stating over one million votes came in…. Is it just me or does it look like Leah has had some botox? I noticed this last week – her face seemed… tightly pulled…. and it’s not just because I don’t like her….

We had a great Top 18 Bollywood routine choreographed by Longinus Fernandes. It was colourful and hard hitting. I felt the women out performed the men overall, just a general observation.

Results

Natalie & Danny (who I placed 6th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie M & Cody (who I placed 2nd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Amy & Vincent (who I placed 1st in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Anthony & Corynne (who I placed 8th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Nicholas & Jenna (who I placed 7th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Tara-Jean & Everett (who I placed 5th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Kim & Emanuel (who I placed 3rd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Jayme Rae & Daniel (who I placed 4th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie B & Austin (who I placed 9th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

So I predicted 3/3 of the Bottom 3 couples (Not Bad for my first Power Ranking Post!)

Solo’s

Anthony – lot’s of hips and shaking

Nicholas – lot’s of tricks and high energy

Austin – solid performer if only I felt his attitude was as great as his dancing

Corynne – simple but pretty dance

Jenna Lynn – lot’s of kicks and power

Melanie B – passionate

Good – Bye

Anthony & Melanie B went home.

Overall

Good Results Show – Loved the Bollywood – Wasn’t surprised with the results.

A Message For Nigel Lythgoe and So You Think You Can Dance

I recently received the following message that was addressed. Since, I’m not Nigel and I don’t have any relationship with the show (this is just a SYTYCD fan site) I decided that I’d post the message here so that hopefully Nigel will stop on by and read this message.

Dear Nigel,
I’m writing b/c I auditioned for SYTYCD in NY, and I was terribly offended by the judges. I made it through the 2-3 preliminary auditions with flying colors b/c I came with something different than what they had seen all day.

I was dressed in African garb and West African dance is my forte. The audition I did for you showed my versatility choreographed with African, hip-hop and contemporary movement. You & the other judges commented on my face, not smiling enough like South African dance, (which is different from West African being the dances that made it through the Middle Passage and among the African Diaspora, including So. America), then you commented on my beautiful long arms, and the hip-hop couple judges admitted they contradicted themselves when they said they wanted something original & versatile but then commented on my outfit and said because of it I should;ve stuck with just African.

The worse part was that by the time you guys see it, the only people who get denied are the people who really can’t dance; anyone showing even a little potential get at least sent to choreography. You just sent me away like I couldn’t dance at all, and I am a trained dancer; I should’ve at least had the opportunity to show I knew other styles as well, like my audition demonstrated.

The truth is SYTYCD is not ready for African dance, none of the judges that day could critique it, the show does not have African choreographers so my forte would get danced by everyone, in spite of the fact that hip-hop, krump, and many of the Latin dancers come from African dance, and sometimes African movement is choroegraphed in the dances done.

I wouldn’t have felt so bad if you just admitted that, instead of making it seem like I couldn’t dance at all. I know my audition will not be shown on the show because SYTYCD is not ready to introduce African dance, and you should’ve just said that.

Maybe one day you’ll get African choreographers and make it a part of the show, (like you did Bolliwood) and when you do, remember me, [REMOVED],( likeĀ [REMOVED], my favorite choreographer), I’ll be back, and I’m sure a lot of other fabulous dancers who can take dance from its roots to all the others dances originated from it.

Looove the show & I’ll keep watching!

[Name Removed] Bronx, N.Y.

Let me know what you think about this So You Think You Can Dance audition experience in the comments.

A Little Pre SYTYCD Chat

Today, Rocky and myself were chatting about tonight’s SYTYCD top 10 show. I thought it might be of interest to our readers. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts in the comments. Also, let me know if you think a SYTYCD chat on this blog would be cool too.

Rocky says:
I’m with you! I can’t wait till the sytycd comes on tonight….but I’m not looking forward to Thursdays anymore.
John says:
why not?
John says:
it will make you cry?
John says:
2 hours tonight…should be good
Rocky says:
I think what I will feel most is annoyed For the next few weeks elimination will be strictly fanbase without regards to quality of performance on Wednesday. Every season good dancers go home because weaker ones still have pity votes.
Rocky says:
Kherington may well go home tonight and that will make me sad.
John says:
nope…she can’t go home…i won’t let her
John says:
everyone said that twitch was carrying her, but I think that she might have been carrying twitch, although since they were in the bottom 3 it’s hard to say either was carrying the other
John says:
tonight should be exciting, because it’s the night where they get new partners
Rocky says:
I know, that makes it exciting to see what everyone can do with new partners. I’ve read that overall it will be a good show. They are doing a group Bollywood routine Thursday night, I can’t wait. I love it.
John says:
sweet…i loved the previous Bollywood number. Bollywood can be really cool if done right or really bad if done wrong. Like most dances really
Rocky says:
Very true, but for this show, I’m sure they will make it good! The dancers will be doing another routine on Thursday, as well. One with just the females, and one with just the males. Mia choreographed the one for the girls so it will be interesting, for sure.
John says:
Well, I’m biased and will certainly love almost any dance with all females. Mia can do some really cool stuff, but some of her stuff is just weird. I definitely haven’t drunk the Mia koolaid. She’s very talented, but not God.
Rocky says:
I agree, she’s not the world’s greatest choreographer but I love weird and quirky so most of her routines are great to me.
John says:
I’m really looking forward to the show…nothing like a beautiful Wednesday night of SYTYCD
Rocky says:
Agreed. Lots of dancing tonight. Two dances per couple and a solo each.
