Power Rankings – So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 16

Last Week’s Power Rankings were fairly accurate. I called the bottom 3. It is hard to predict exactly who will go home until you see their solo’s, however, as we get to know each dancer I think we can also guess how their solo’s will be.

So this week for the So you think you can dance canada top 16 I will do my power rankings and see if I can get it right.

I am not a dancing expert but I enjoy watching and will base my Power Rankings on what I saw, heard and felt about each couple’s routine.

1. Jayme Rae & Daniel
Hip Hop with Luther
“Pucker Up” Ciara - Fantasy Ride (Deluxe Version) - Pucker Up – Ciara

This was my favourite routine of the night. Luther’s choreo to the song, combined with Jayme Rae and Daniel’s performance… it was just awesome for me. Amazing dancing, creative floor work, sexy moves and I had goosebumps. What more does it take to stay on top?

2. Amy & Vincent
Hip Hop with Flii Stylez
“Boom Boom Pow” Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) - Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas

Maybe I just favour hip hop and urban dance but this routine rocked it. I thought he hit harder than she did but together they entertained me.

3. Corynne & Austin
Contemporary with Stacey Tookey
“Never Say Never” The Fray - The Fray - Never Say Never – The Fray

I am not usually an Austin fan, though I do like Corynne, but this routine was great. It was pretty and it gave me goosebumps. Stacey Tookey is amazing, Corynne and Austin danced it wonderfully and even though I am not an Austin fan, I have to say he had me tonight.

4. Kim & Emanuel
Jazz Funk with Blake McGrath
“Love, Sex, Magic” Ciara - Fantasy Ride (Deluxe Version) - Love Sex Magic (feat. Justin Timberlake) – Justin Timberlake/Ciara

This was hot, sexy, cool. Blake is a god. I felt they danced it a little slow and would hav elike dto see it a little harder but the licking, biting, stripping was all sexy. Usually I’d put Blake’s routines higher, but I felt Emanuel and Kim could have done better, not that they did badly, I jsut prefered a few other routines.

5. Melanie & Cody
Mambo with Gustavo Vargas
“Suena Ahora” Michi Sarmiento - Salsa Latin Party, Vol. 1 - Suena Ahora – Michi Sarmiento

I love Melanie and Cody. I’d always put them in my Top 3…. but this week I was disappointed with the routine. Maybe because it’s a style I am less familiar with, but it felt a little bit confusing and while it was cute and fun, it seemed too laid back to me.

——————- BOTTOM 3 PREDICTIONS ——————-

6. Tara-Jean & Everett
Quick Step with Pierre Allaire
Chicago Overture” Various Artists - Chicago - The Musical - Overture – Hotrolls Ragtime Band

I hate to put TJ and Everett in Bottom 3 because I am a huge fan of them both, but it just didn’t do it for me tonight. It felt Cheesey and though I enjoyed the lifts and flips and spins, I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I wanted to. I predict they will make bottom 3 but will move on after amazing solo’s (I hope!)

7. Nicholas & Jenna Lynn
Hustle with Benji Schwimmer
“Canned Heat” Jamiroquai - Center Stage - Canned Heat – Jamiroquai

I love Benji and I was so glad to see him choreo. Loved his difficult moves and high energy. I also love the song and the energy it emotes but …. I don’t think they will get the votes to stay out of the Bottom 3 again. We will see. If I am right and they are Bottom 3 I think Jenna will go home. She does great passionate solo’s but how many times can you do a solo before it just gets old?

8. Natalie & Danny
Rhumba with Gustavo Vargas
“Historia de un amor” Pérez Prado - Il Vero, Unico, Grande Perez Prado - Historia de un Amor – Perez Prado

This routine fell short for me. I know it isn’t the style they know and I realize it was not danced badly, but it’s Top 16 and even if everyone was great they’d still have to cut someone. I think these two will make Bottom 3 and perhaps Danny will go home due ot his “lack of confidence”

I have no clue at this point… but those are my predictions and Power Rankings. If my Bottom 3 are right I would predict Jenna Lynn and Danny going home – but I could be way off even on my Bottom 3 Couples…

What do you think?

So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 18 Results Show

Leah Miller opened the show stating over one million votes came in…. Is it just me or does it look like Leah has had some botox? I noticed this last week – her face seemed… tightly pulled…. and it’s not just because I don’t like her….

We had a great Top 18 Bollywood routine choreographed by Longinus Fernandes. It was colourful and hard hitting. I felt the women out performed the men overall, just a general observation.

Results

Natalie & Danny (who I placed 6th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie M & Cody (who I placed 2nd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Amy & Vincent (who I placed 1st in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Anthony & Corynne (who I placed 8th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Nicholas & Jenna (who I placed 7th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Tara-Jean & Everett (who I placed 5th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Kim & Emanuel (who I placed 3rd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Jayme Rae & Daniel (who I placed 4th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie B & Austin (who I placed 9th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

So I predicted 3/3 of the Bottom 3 couples (Not Bad for my first Power Ranking Post!)

Solo’s

Anthony – lot’s of hips and shaking

Nicholas – lot’s of tricks and high energy

Austin – solid performer if only I felt his attitude was as great as his dancing

Corynne – simple but pretty dance

Jenna Lynn – lot’s of kicks and power

Melanie B – passionate

Good – Bye

Anthony & Melanie B went home.

Overall

Good Results Show – Loved the Bollywood – Wasn’t surprised with the results.

SYTYCDC Top 18 Choreography

I know that I am not writing about rants or raves, but seriously what was Leah wearing on Tuesday night.  The 80s are over Leah try and come to grips with that.

Our first couple was Melanie M and Cody.  Just as I was afraid of last week with Cody that he would have to dance something that needs him to be dirty.  The more i look at him, the more I think that he is just so darling and looks like a Disney character.  They pulled Krump out of the hat.  Lord help us.  Cody needed to be hitting the steps hard, and seem 10 feet tall with about 50 pounds on him.  He mostly pulled it off, actually did better than I imagined he would.  Give him time and he will only improve.  Melanie M on the other hand was amazing.  So much power out of the little thing.  She believed in what she was doing, and made me a believer too.  I will remember her next week for sure.  Great piece by Lil’ C.  Just could have used a little more ‘buck-ness’ – but really what couldn’t used a little more buck?

Tara Jean and Everett were up next.  It’s not a great sign when I can’t really remember them from the week before.  Not good at all.  They pulled Salsa out of the hat, and were matched with Tony and Melanie.  In the interviews leading up to the piece, Tara Jean reminded me of a varsity cheerleader and Everett was on the football team.  That all changed when that music started.  The cheerleader turned into Shakira Canadian-style.  She was dirty and sexy and Everett was a great partner.  It is sometimes hard for the men to stand out when their partners are dressed in almost nothing and shaking their hips like Tara Jean was.  I predict that these 2 will go far, and that I won’t ever forget them again.

I remember watching the Figure Skating at the part Olympics and watching Emanuel perform.  He made me nervous every time because it didn’t seem like him and ice were the right combination.  When him and Kim chose Theatre with Sean Cheesman- I thought it would be a match made in Heaven-and I was right.  Emanuel is a big man and this piece proved once and for all that his brute strength is no joke.  He was catching Kim in these jumps and lifts that I kept screaming at because if his timing was even a little off or if he wasn’t as strong as he is that piece wouldn’t have worked.  Emanuel’s face was a little twisted at the very beginning, but very soon after he got into it.  Kim was great, she seemed at home with the movement and I think that there is something really interesting with the partnership. Emanuel has a commanding presence onstage- so everyone better be watching.

Next to dance was Amy and Vincent with a contemporary piece by Blake.  I wrote down before I saw the rehearsal footage that “They will get eaten by Blake”.  Blake is no joke- he is intense and demands the most out of his dancers.  He also has an organic element to his movement that you are either capable of doing or you aren’t.  I didn’t think that Vincent would be convincing in his mean-ness..  Was I ever wrong.  The make up, the costumes and the music where dead-on and the only thing better than all of that was the dancing.  I didn’t really get the story that Blake told about an obsessed guy because to me it was more like a possessed man and a doll.  Amy was beautiful in her awkward poses and limp arms, she really let Vincent tear her apart and be super creepy.  I loved this piece.

There aren’t very many types of choreography that I don’t know at least some small detail about.  Dancehall is one of them.  After watching Jaeblazes’ choreography with Daniel and Jayme-Rae, I now what to move to Jamaica and learn how to do ‘dancehall‘.  It’s a combination of hip-hop and Latin movement.  I felt like he were all witnessing the foreplay between the 2 dancers.  It was hard hitting, sexy, and really dirty.  I love love love Dancehall.  Plus hearing Luther say funny words is also entertaining.

Most types of dance can be critiqued on a sliding scale: the Paso Doble isn’t one of those dances.  For me whenever I watch the Paso- it either rocks me with it’s intensity or it falls flat.  These piece with Anthony and Corynne was great.  Anthony for being someone that isn’t really tall danced like he was 10 feet tall.  Unfortunately halfway through they collided together, I blame the layers of her skirt not the dancers themselves.  They should be praised for managing to pick it up after that fall- especially with the Paso, because it’s a dance that builds and builds its intensity as it progresses.

I was disappointed that ShoTyme was the choreographer of the hip-hop routine with Nicolas and Jenna Lynn especially seeing as Little C was in the audience.  Nicolas being a B-Boy pulled out his tricks while Jenna Lynn didn’t.  She really needed to keep up and I think that for the most part she did- sadly I’m just not a huge fan of ShoTyme’s style.  I think that Nicolas will be in the competition for a while yet- he is a really strong performer.  I thought that the piece was good- but it’s certainly not a memorable one.

After watching the next piece I started to think that people’s interpretations of certain styles were getting quite loose.  The fact that Natalie and Danny chose Jazz and then danced the piece they did by Melissa Williams I have no idea how that could be considered anything other than a contemporary piece, even to say it was a lyrical jazz piece would be a serious stretch.  Regardless of what the actual style was- I liked this piece.  I can’t say anything really good about it though.  I felt like the choreography was forced and was in attempt to set up some of the lifts and catches that Natalie and Danny did.  That being said- they danced it well, I think that if that piece was not danced by those 2 it would have been a total train wreck.

Final dance of the night- Austin and Melanie with the Smooth Waltz.  I know the least about American Ballroom styles, but I know that I like the waltz.  It’s so classic, and fluid and it’s a style that isn’t in a rush.  Plus I love Austin and Melanie.  The opening of the piece by Danny Quilliam was intense with the fans her Melanie’s costume but I ate it right up.  Austin has never done this style before, and he was coming really really close to nailing it. His rise and fall was effortless as was his partnering of Melanie.  Sadly Melanie didn’t do very well- especially seeing as she a Latin Ballroom girl.  She should have knocked this out of the park and she fell flat.  I think that she will be in danger tonight.  Despite all of that, I loved the drama of the piece and the choreography was really original and powerful.

That’s it!  See you next week..

Wardrobe Rant – So You Think You Can Dance Canada Top 18

There is much to rant about that wardrobe deserves it’s own post.

    Melanie & Cody

The basic Black was good for Crump, though the vinyl coats were kind of too flashy

    Tara-Jean & Everett

She looked amazing in the sexy purple fringe… and uh – what was he wearing? Heh Who cares 😉

    Emanuel & Kim

Her knee-high garter get-up was sexy but contrasted his outfit.

    Amy & Vincent

His make-up helped emit emotion. I loved this routine I paid very little to their wardrobe.

    Jayme & Daniel

I LOVED this outfit. Daniel looked stunning in his hat and vest piece. Loved purple on them both, it was a perfect outfit for the routine.

    Anthony & Corynne

the dress was suitable for the genre but seemed to get in the way more than anything. His sheer shirt also suited the arrangement but was a lil too sheer ha ha

    Nicholas & Jenna

I loved the old school red jumpsuits. I hardly recognized Jenna with her hair straightened.

    Danny & Natalie

The boy undies distracted me. Her hair looked dirty. I think she’s a cute girl, but she was done up horribly tonight.

    Austin & Melanie B

Her dress was pretty, white, flowy and jewelled… every princess-girl’s dream. It was fitting to the routine and very angelic.

Power Rankings – So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 18

I always get nervous doing these power rankings, especially so early on when we haven’t seen enough of the dancers to really predict or forecast… however, I enjoy watching and will base my Power Rankings on what I saw, heard and felt about each couple’s routine.

    1. Amy & Vincent
    Contemporary with Blake McGrath
“When You Say My Name” – Mario Spinetti

I had goosebumps. Yes, I think Blake is a God. Yes, I am biased because of that. It was dark but this routine was beautifully choreographed and beautifully danced and it was memorable. People will vote for this!!! It was my favourite tonight!!!

    2. Melanie M & Cody
    Crump with Lil C
    “Buck N Roll” – Tha J Squad

I love that Melanie is so versatile and even though I think Cody has the “Evan Syndrome” (Of being too cute to be “nasty” or “crump”) the two of them worked well together and they are both favourites of mine so I am thrilled they are paired together. They are likable and they rocked it so not only are they not bottom 3 I think they would be top 3 if they announced those results!

    3. Emanuel & Kim
    Theatre with Sean Cheeseman
“Maybe This Time” – Connie Fisher

I think Theatre can get too “Cheesey” with “Cheeseman” (heh heh!) but this was well done and the facial expressions and emotion was perfectly done. Emanuel (as someone noted in a previous comment) is very well-known in Canada for his figure skating, so I think people will continue to vote for him as he already has a huge fan-base.

    4. Jayme & Daniel
    Dance Hall with JaeBlaze
    “So Fine” – Sean Paul

I don’t know this “Dance Hall” style, the choreo *seemed* simple (or maybe they just mastered it) but it was entertaining and I think people will vote for things that entertain them, especially when they aren’t dance instructors or specialists, bottom line is entertaining or not.. this was.

    5. Tara-Jean & Everett
Salsa with Tony Meredith & Melanie LePatin
“Ana Pa’ Mi Tambor” – La Excelencia

I thought there were some awkward transitions but overall it was sexy and hot. She’s a looker and he is pretty adorable also. The routine was good enough to get calls I hope.

    6. Danny & Natalie
    Jazz with Melissa Williams
“Please Don’t Leave Me” – Pink

The boy underwear was distracting and awkward but the dancing was good. I am a huge fan of Natalie but tonight I felt she was a bit frantic, though her “character” was supposed to be a bit crazed… It was an average routine, with the exception of the spins which I loved.

    ——————- BOTTOM 3 PREDICTIONS ——————-

    7. Nicholas & Jenna
    Hip Hop with Show Tyme
    “Blast Off” – P. Diddy & Fam

It wasn’t as hard-hitting as it could have been and though I agree he did a better job than she did, I think the judges were too rough on Jenna. This could bring in some sympathy votes on her behalf, but mostly I think it was an average performance with a mismatched couple who will be in the bottom 3.

    8. Anthony & Corynne
Paso Doble with Tony & Melanie
    “Fuego” – Bond

This seemed like difficult choreo and style for week 2. There was the fall, and though I don’t think it phased them enough to be a strike against them necessarily, I also don’t find Paso Doble very exciting typically… I have seen some very powerful routines that I enjoyed but this one was just average for me personally, not enough to make me want to vote sadly, I really do like Corynne (and her giggles)

    9. Austin & Melanie B
    Smooth Waltz with Danny Quillman
“Nights in White Satin” – Il Divo

I am not a ballroom expert, so when it comes to these routines I usually watch the feet unless something else is exceptionally interesting to captivate my attention. This routine didn’t have anything to captivate me and while watching their feet I noticed a lot of off-beat steps and awkward footing. It was pretty, but not entertaining for me. Add that they are a new couple because of being bottom 3 last week… I predict they will find themselves there once more this week. I am a bit biased, I don’t really like Austin, I mean he seems like a great dancer (his solo last week was fantastic) but his personality rubs me the wrong way ever since the group routines during audition finales… meh!

Feel free to comment what do you think?
