Forgotten Faces from SYTYCD 5

There are so many people that audition for So You Think You Can Dance, I really don’t envy the producers and editors of So You Think You Can Dance at all. Nigel even said as much in a tweet he sent where he talked about being on the golf course while the editors were hard at work trying to get a few days of auditions down to an hour or two.

I think there are two types of dancers that unfortunately hit the cutting room floor on So You THink You Can Dance. First, we lose dancers that we fall in love with in the auditions and then never see again. Second, there are great dancers that make it to the end of vegas week and just barely miss making the top 20, but which we never actually get to see dance.

This post is a tribute to these dancers who we hope will return for So You Think You Can Dance season 6. If you have a dancer you think I should add to this list leave a comment (preferably with a link to a video of that person) and I’ll add them to the post.

Kelsea Taylor – I’m sure very few people will forget the “beautiful disastrous weirdo” who also introduced us to the music of Oona (even if it wasn’t her original music). Too bad after her killer audition, we never saw her in Vegas week. My source says she went home in the ballroom round in Las Vegas.

Paula VanOppen – She almost made the top 20 and you should have seen the fan club she has in my comments. Considering her fan club and the videos on YouTube of Paula I’d love to see her come back on season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance.

Diana Vaden – Another person similar to Paula which made the top 20, but we didn’t see her dance nearly enough to be able to make any judgments. My source says she’s still undecided about auditioning again. Let’s hope she changes her mind and goes back.

Kellen Stancil (Umbrella Guy) – He made it to Las Vegas, but then we never saw him again. I’d love to have seen how he did in Las Vegas. Hopefully he’ll come back again.

Chimezie Nwosu – Can you say Twitch? Let’s hope he works as hard as twitch did and he’ll be back on the show. Too bad we didn’t get to see more of his work in Las Vegas.

Arielle Taylor – A wonderful audition, but she kind of fell off the show when we got to Las Vegas. She auditioned before and I expect we’ll see her audition again.

Talia Rickards – Remember her audition. Beautiful along with a beautiful back story. I’d really like to see her dance some more.

Geo Smith (African Dancer) – Another disappearing act. It was in Las Vegas, but dancers weren’t meant to disappear. Cris Angel has tried that in Las Vegas and he’s been failing miserably.

Marico Flake (Memphis Juker) – Great audition, but once again nothing in Las Vegas. I’d have liked to see him try some other styles and see how he’d do.

Anna Dunn – I’m sure you remember the name. Great contemporary dancer that we never get to see again. I guess there’s always next year.

Lauren and Lydia Guerra – I’d have love to see the twins in Las Vegas. Too bad.

Amanda Kerby – Where did she go? They did a whole package on her talking about her family and her father and then we get none of her in Las Vegas. Very sad.

Paris Torres Before So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

Check out a couple videos of Paris Torres before making the So You Think You Can Dance top 20. They aren’t the best videos, but give you a little idea of what Paris Torres dancing was like before SYTYCD.

Check out this practice video of Paris Torres before So You Think You Can Dance. Turns out that the discarded Kelsea Taylor is also in this video as well. Dancers (from left to right at beginning): Zsa Baysa Paris Torres Andrea Burr Kelsea Taylor Katelyn Rafter

Here’s what looks like the actual performance video with Paris Torres (and Kelsea Taylor) as well.

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t post Paris Torres original audition video so you can see the ballerina in action to the song “Toxic” Yael Naïm - Yael Naïm - Toxic by Yael Naim:

Predicting the So You Think You Can Dance Top 20

My fellow So You Think You Can Dance friend posted their potential So You Think You Can Dance 2009 Top 20. I love the idea and if I hadn’t been spending so much time on the So You Think You Can Dance music, I’d do the same (in fact, I did previously post a few So You Think You Can Dance 2009 top 20 locks. However, that was only after the first audition. Now the auditions are complete and we’re going into Vegas. So, despite my lack of time, here’s Nate’s potential top 20:

The Top 10 Boys
Sammy Ramirez (LA)
Maksim Kapitannikov (New York)
Evan Kasprzak (Memphis)
Phillip Chebeeb (LA)
Chimezie Nwosu (New York)
Marico Flaka (Memphis)
Brandon Bryant (Denver)
Peter Sabasino (New York)
Alex Wong (Miami)
Ryan Kasprzak (Memphis)

The Top 10 Girls
Natalie Reid (Denver)
Jeanette Manrara (Miami)
Bianca Revels (LA)
Kayla Rodamski (Denver)
Kelsea Taylor (Seattle)
Gabi Rojas (New York)
Megan Kinney (Note: NOT Caitlin. We may have only seen like 15 seconds of Megan, but I was captivated) (Miami)
Priscilla Marrero (Miami)
Asuka Kondoh (LA)
Anna Dunn (Miami)

His locks for the So You Think You Can Dance top 20 are: Evan Kasprzak, Phillip Chebeeb, Brandon Bryant, Natalie Reid, Bianca Revels, Gabi Rojas, and Asuka Kondoh.

I have to disagree with a couple of the choices. The guys actually look pretty solid. I’m a little scared the Phillip Chebeeb might not make it, but then again they need a bit of diversity of talent in the top 20 to make the show more interesting to watch.

Where I have to disagree is with the top 10 girls. I’d probably take Kelsea Taylor off the list since she was wonderful in her style, but she might not be able to go beyond her own unique talent. I wouldn’t be surprised if by some weird act Natalie Reid doesn’t pull through. Possibly Mia’s choreography or something. I also have to put Caitlin Kinney into my top 10 girls. She was fantastic. Caitlin Kinney and Kayla Radomski were my two favorite auditions for this season of So You Think You Can Dance.

Man, just as I say that I look through the rest of the list and realize that there are so many talented people on that list. I’m still surprised that the ballroom dancers haven’t been showing up. No Chelsie Hightower on the list. No Benji Schwimmer or Lacey Schwimmer for that matter. Although I do think it’s good that Asuka Kondoh is on the list.

Anyone else as excited as I am about this week’s So You Think You Can Dance? I just wish I would have gotten in contact with the So You Think You Can Dance producers when they were actually doing the Las Vegas auditions and found a way to go and check out the talent first hand. Maybe next season.

Kelsea Taylor “Beautiful Disastrous Weirdo” SYTYCD 5 Audition

UPDATE: The full version of Oona’s “Tore My Heart” that Kelsea danced to is now on iTunes Oona - Tore My Heart - Single - Tore My Heart

Kelsea Taylor is what makes SYTYCD special to me. She’s a unique personality that brings a unique dance style that kind of stretches the movements we’re use to seeing in dance. Someone that can do that is really special.

Many have been asking about what music was used for Kelsea Taylor. After much looking, we could update the LA audition music. Kelsea Taylor (45105) danced to “Tore My Heart” by Oona and Dave Tweedie (So far I can only find it available on Myspace and now a free MP3 download here) Reportedly, the song was originally “Habanera” Kate Nash - Foundations - EP - Habanera by Kate Nash, but had to be swapped due to copyright issues.

It’s always interesting when they decide to swap songs. Copyright issues are tough and sometimes expensive. I think you could also tell the music was swapped since she finished dancing and the music kept going. Would be interesting to see someone overlay the Kate Nash Habanera song with the video of Kelsea Taylor below. Read more..
