SYTYCD Canada Top 20 Performances

Tonight was the Top performance show and I have compiled a list of the dancers, choreographers, music and a few thoughts.

I will power rank them at the end of this post – feel free to comment with your own thoughts.

Judges Tonight: Jean-Marc, Tre Armstrong, Rex Harrington, Mary Murphy.

Rodrigo & Lauren
Hip Hip – Luther Brown
“Look at me Now” Look At Me Now (feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes) - Look At Me Now (feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes) - Single – Chris Brown (ft. Lil’ Wayne & Busta Rhymes)

I really enjoyed this routine. We learned Rodrigo had an injury last week, as he walked on stage to do his solo/dance for his life he actually fell and hurt his neck. He had a minor concussion. He is better now and they two danced really well. It is kind of an awkward song for dance, but Luther choreographed it well and I thought they did a fantastic job.

Christian & Lindsay
Contemporary – Blake McGrath
“1+1” 1+1 - 4 – Beyonce

This was one of my favourites of the night. It was emotional and deep. It was about the importance of touch in relationships and was very sensual. I usually love Blake’s routines and this was no different.

JP & Denitsa
Jive – Danny Arbour (Past contenstent)
“Blue Suede Shoes” Blue Suede Shoes - The Essential Elvis Presley (Remastered) – Elvis Presley

This was a fast moving edurance dance. I thought they both did very well and was impressed to see Danny back choreographing for the show. It was in the middle for me tonight.

Carlena & Boneless
Dancehall – Jaeblaze
“Star Bwoy” Star Bwoy - Star Bwoy Riddim – Mavado

This was fun and had a good vibe. I am not sur ehow I feel about Carlena yet, some days I love her, others I just remember her crap-attitude and unfortunately it really puts that dark cloud over everything she does. Amazing dancer, yes, and hopefully that will continue to shine and cast away the bad attitude I remember. Overall this dance had the swagga’ it needed.

Kevin & Teya
Viennese Waltz – Pierre Allaire
“Good to You” Good To You (Featuring Kate Voegele) - Masterpiece Theatre – Marianas Trench

This was my least favourite dance of the night. It was slow, dull, boring and they really did not have a strong grasp of the steps. Granted, it is supposed to be a calm dance, but they didn’t glide across the dance floor – they kind of stumbled. It wasn’t horrific, and I couldn’t do any better, but it just didn’t entertain me. I predict this will be inthe bottom 3.

Geisha & Francois
Hip Hop – Tucker Barkley
“Roman’s Revenge” Roman's Revenge (feat. Lil Wayne) - Roman's Revenge (feat. Lil Wayne) - Single – Nicki Minaj (ft. Lil’ Wayne)

I enjoyed this routine. The costumes were a bit strange, but the choreo was good and they delivered it well. Compared to the rest of the night, it was about middle rating, but entertaining and fun!

Adam & Yulia
Samba – Gustavo Vargas
“Samba” Samba - Beats Around The Bush – Ganga Giri

This was really really fast. I think Yulia did better than Adam, but together it seemed a little chaotic, frantic and just off. Granted, it was fast, but it went from “fast – wow!” to “fast – what?” and I predict they may end up in the bottom three.

Melissa & Shane
Contemporary – Sabrina Matthews
“This Year’s Love” This Years Love - White Ladder – David Gray

This was amazing! Sabrina Matthews always choreographs such amazing pieces and this one was about a friend helping another friend through HIV AIDS. The topic was emotional, but these two dancers nailed it. THey brought raw emotion and amazing lifts, I was in tears! The judges agreed and got quite emotional connecting the dance to experiences of loved ones lost from AIDS. One of my favourites of the night!

Shelaina & Matt
Hustle – Maria Torres
“Melody of Love” (Wanna Be Loved) Melody of Love (Wanna Be Loved) - Endless Summer – Donna Summer

I usually like Maria Torres’ work and was excited to see a Hustle, but was disappointed. I do not know enough about the genre to say if it was the choreo or the dancing or just the song, but it was really slow and felt almost like it had to be choreographed at half time or something. I was bored besides a few nice lifts and spins. I think it may put them in the bottom three.

Jordan & Joey
Jazz – Sean Cheesman
“That’s Life” That's Life - Nothing But the Best - The Frank Sinatra Collection (Remastered) – Frank Sinatra

By far my favourite of the night! This dance was athletic, comedic, completely in sync and absolutely fantastic! Judges called these two a power couple and I couldn’t agree more. Jordan was an early favourite for me in auditions and tonight I think she quickly became Canada’s favourite! The two of them nailed the facial expressions, comedic moments, dance moves and chemistry! The story was a first date at the movies and the boy wants a kiss and tries to get one… it was so funny – once I find it I will post it for those of you who don’t get CTV to watch… really fantastic!

With that said here are my rankings for the night – please comment if you agree or disagree.

Top 3:

-Jordan & Joey
-Melissa & Shane
-Christian & Lindsay

Middle 4:

-Rodrigo & Lauren (almost top 3)
-JP & Denitsa
-Geisha & Francois
-Carlena & Boneless

Bottom 3:
-Adam & Yulia
-Shelaina & Matt
-Kevin & Teya

We will see if I am right, it is sad because the bottom 3 couples are not necessarily my least favourite dancers, they just didn’t pull through tonight for some reason.

What do you think?
Stay Tuned for Results tomorrow, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 8pm Local time on CTV. I will post the results here tomorrow night.

Random Comment: Am I the only one who dislikes Leah Miller? I know I always say it, but she is way too young to have that much botox! Her outfit tonight was so strange! An orange skirt that went up her back and a purple long sleeved shirt that was tied up to show her upper torso? I wish Cat Deely could do our show here too šŸ˜‰

Power Rankings SYTYCD Canada Top 12 – More of a Summary this week

Sorry I am late posting I am going out of town tomorrow… which means… I won’t ge tto see results show tomorrow. I will post a discussion post and on Monday when I get a chance to watch results I will do post on it.

ok, let’s get started – I won’t actually power rank tonight simply because I have to pack and head out of town early! SO here is tonight’s summary

Judges:
Jean-Marc, Tre, Blake, Luther and Mary Murphy!

Denys & Janick
Paso Doble – Nattali & Francis
Espana Cani ā€“ Manhattan Pops Orchestra – EspaƱa
1-877-977-46 01

It was powerful and strong, which is what I expected from Denys but was impressed with from Janick. I don’t know much about the dance, but Mary Murphy does and she was hooting and hollering – so I think it was good. Luther called Denys the strongest ballroom dancer ever on the show! Blake said Denys was his fave dancer on the show period.

Jeff & Danielle
Contemporary – Stacey Tookey
Elephant in the Room – Richard Walters – Elephant
1-877-977-46 02

As always Stacey Tookey choreographs a stunning piece. Both danced it beautifully. They got rave reviews from the judges and I can tell this week will be tough! Great jumps and spins and there was one where they went into each other like it would be a crash or a lift but they jerked to each side and joined as one – amazing!

Edgar & Charlene
Salsa – Gustavo Vargas
La Voz del Caribe – Eddie Palmieri – La
1-877-977-46 03

It was spicy, hot. Both brought it – I just hope the voters call in. Edgar has been in the bottom too often. Now however, we have all fantastic dancers so it will be even tougher. They both did AMAZING lifts, spins flips and tricks BUT their last big move did NOT happen and it was pretty obvious… also in the middle her shoe was caught in dress, but she fixed it and went right into her leap – well done!

Mackenize & Amanda
Adro-Jazz – Sean Cheesman
Drumming Circle – Professional Trance – Drumming
1-877-977-46 04

It was, as Sean’s pieces often are, interesting and dynamic. Amanda truly is all legs and arms – but it made the spins around all the more amazing. They worked well together although there were a few moments of slight hiccps, Mackenzie shoed amazing strength lifting her upside down. It was fast and energizing. Loved the body slide at the end. Tre called it animalistic which was a great description!

Claudia & Jonathan
Hip Hop – ShoTyme
The One – Mary J Blige ft Drake – The
1-877-977-46 05

I think I’ve made it clear that I feel Claudia is not very cersatile or tlaented outside of her genre. That being said, she brought it tonight. I almost believed it. Jonathan outshined her in my opinion BUT she really got it better than I expected.

Nathalie & Sebastian
Disco – Maria Torres
You Should be dancing – BeeGees – You
1-877-977-46 06

There were some nice lifts. Disco is togh. I think they did well. I really love Sebastian! It is going to be tough to see someone go home – but it will happen tomorrow night (and I am so sad to miss it)

Who do you think the bottom 3 are?

Who is going home?

Power Rankings for SYTYCD Canada Top 18

Last Week’s Power Rankings were accurate so we will see how I do this week.

The judges main message to viewers was to VOTE!!!! So I encourage everyone tonight to please do just that… VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

This was challenging because some of the routines were good but came from dancers who have been repeatedly in the bottom 3… so, with all things considered here are my thoughts…

Please feel free to comment if you agree, disagree or have anything to add or say. I am not even 100% sure I agree with my ranking, it was really hard tonight.

********** TOP 3 **********

1. Danielle & Sebastian ā€“ contemporary ā€“ Sabrina Matthews
Gunninā€™ ā€“ Hedley – Gunnin'
1-866-977-4606

Emotional Concept of struggling with eating disorders. Beautiful and powerful movements. Very strong total goose bumps awesome routine. My fave of the night.

2. Charlene & Jeff – Hustle ā€“ Maria Torres
Thatā€™s Where the Happy People Go ā€“ The Trammps – That's
1-866-977-4604

Some amazing twists, flips and lifts I actually got goose bumps with the one major trick. I really enjoyed the routine. It was challenging and they pulled it off wonderfully.

3. Janick & Shavar ā€“ Hip Hip ā€“ Luther Brown
Lil Freak ā€“ Usher ft Nicki Minaj – Lil
1-866-977-4602

Much harder hitting than last week. Smooth groove. She impressed me and he was predictably good in his genre. I kept moving this up and down but decided on third place. It was awesome.

********** MIDDLE **********

4. Natalie & Mackenzie ā€“ Cha Cha ā€“ Gustavo Vargas
I like it ā€“ Enrique Inglasis ft pitbull – I
1-866-977-4605

It felt a bit slow for me but other than that it was really fun and sexy. The judges loved it but they seem to almost love everything donā€™t they? So much for critiques.

5. Kirsten & Jera ā€“ 90s Hip-Hop ā€“ ShoTyme
Now that we found the love ā€“ Heavy D & The Boyz ft Aaron Hall – Now
1-866-977-4607

Old School Love. Lotā€™s of old bounce moves that brought me back. A bit off at times but totally fun and gave me a good laugh remembering when people really danced this way.

6. Amanda & Denys – Quick Step ā€“ Tony & Melanie
Feelinā€™ Good ā€“ Colin James – Something
1-866-977-4601

Fast and fun. Nice flips and spins. Some rocking out that made it more enjoyable to watch than most quick steps.

********** BOTTOM 3 **********

7. Claudia & Edgar ā€“ Jazz ā€“ Sean Cheesman
Imposible ā€“ Shontelle – Impossible
1-866-977-4608

Slow start. Amazing lift spin, great chemistry for one week together. Goosebumps at times which usually means top 3 but I just donā€™t think it will happen based on their history so far. I hope they stay out of the bottom three this week, this routine was amazing! I am putting them 7th but I feel like they should be about 4th based JUST on tonight.

8. Kloe & Jonathan ā€“ West Coast Swing ā€“ Benji Schwimmer
Clocks – Vitamin String Quartet – Clocks
1-866-977-4609

This was a really challenging routine that didnā€™t feel west coast swing. Benji is amazing and the two danced really well. It was beautiful to watch. I just think it was a bit too much that didnā€™t fully come together.

9. Julia & Jesse ā€“ Contemporary ā€“ Stacey Tookey
Falling ā€“ Florence and the Machine – not on iTunes, so try “Heavy in Your Arms” – Heavy from the Eclipse soundtrack.
1-866-977-4603

Beautiful piece by Stacey however Melissa was right it lacked connection at times and a few lifts seemed flawed. That being said I enjoyed the routine but it was tough to pick a bottom 3 and this is just how they measured up for me overall. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever put a Tookey routine in bottom threeā€¦ eek!

Sean Cheesman on SYTYCD Season 6

First of all, hello, I am Mandy and I am from Vancouver Canada and post on https://puresytycd.com/canadasite regularly but will be posting periodically here on the USA site also.

That being said, I have to tell you how thrilled I was to see Canadian Choreographers Maria Torres (an American but was on SYTYCD Canada show), Stacey Tookey, and newcomers Gustavo Vargas and Sean Cheesman, who have done some amazing stuff for the Canadian show.

I’d like to touch on each of these wonderful choreographers throughout the week, but for now, let’s look at the AMAZING Sean Cheesman.

Sean Cheesman choreographing on last weeks show was a great surprise for me. He is one of my favourite judges and choreographers on SYTYCD Canada and has brought so much greatness to our Canadian Show.

HisĀ Afrojazz routine for Noelle & RussellĀ  was amazing and in my opinion one of the best of the evening.

They danced to ā€œFrog Danceā€ -by Mickey Hart & Planet Drum, and Sean Cheeseman threw in allĀ his tricks, really showcasing hisĀ  amazing choreography and giving Noelle and Russell a much needed spotlight.

I am so glad to see him choreogrpah on SYTYCD as it has a wider audience than SYTYCD Canada.Ā  I really hope they invite him back for more this season and in the future seasons too as he is truly an awesome choreographer.

Sean Cheesman’s bio reads:

Calgary native Sean Cheesman is an internationally-renowned director/choreographer who has worked with some of the world’s top entertainers, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, TLC, Prince, Vanessa Williams, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, and Britney Spears.

Cheesman has toured with Janet Jackson as a choreographer and dancer and subsequently choreographed tours for Prince. Cheesman appeared in and choreographed the film The Bodyguard and most recently was the host and lead judge of the U.K. television series Dirty Dancing: Time of Your Life.

Sean just completed choreographing the largest stage revue show in Berlin, Germany.

He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two MTV awards for choreography, a “What’s on Stage” theatre award for the West-End musical Daddy Cool, and was also nominated for a Bob Fosse choreography award.
