Top 20 Results Thoughts and Discussion

Sorry this is late, y’all. I was trying to watch last night’s results show while at work. Which was successful until about halfway through the solos and I had to actually go work. I’ve since caught up and am ready to talk. Seems some of you are, too, so here’s a space for your discussion, too. Sound off in the comments.

My thoughts:

-I loved the Sonya group routine. It seemed like the girlie “beasts” were a bit favored over the guys, but I do have to agree that I think the girls are stronger this season. The guys are growing on me but all my favorites are girls right now. Also, I thought the “Where were you in ’92” line was ironic, considering most of the dancers are younger than 19 and ’92 was almost 20 years ago now…

-I’ve loved having Megan Mullaly as a guest judge. She knows what she’s talking about, but she’s kind and supportive and clearly a fan. Best of all possible worlds for a guest judge.

-The photo of a scared Nigel congo-ing (?!?!) with Lady Gaga was hysterical. And scary. 🙂

-I’m glad they didn’t try to act like Melanie/Marko are in danger because I really love this couple and they had one of the best routines of the night.

-In the Missy/Wadi and Iveta/Nick couples, I do like the guys a lot and I really liked their partnerships, which is helping Missy and Iveta grow on me. Glad they’re safe.

-Between Ashley/Chris and Jordan/Tadd, I think Jordan/Tadd actually had the stronger routine. It was just at the beginning of the night, so maybe people forgot about them. I really like their partnership. I like Ashley/Chris, too, don’t get me wrong and they had a cute hip hop, but I liked the African jazz better.

-I’m SO GLAD Caitlynn is safe. She’s quickly become one of my favorites. Doesn’t she kinda look like a brunette LoFro? However, I loved watching her danced with Robert. They had such a great routine and incredible chemistry. Who knows if she and Mitchell will have good chemistry together next week? I want her to continue to be safe.

-I’m not surprised Clarice/Jess were in the bottom, but I thought she did a really good job in the Broadway. She had so much charisma and I think she and Jess might actually be a good pair.

-Keri Hilson’s performance was great and all, but I would’ve liked more focus on the dancer. I may be in the minority about generally being kinda blah about the musical performances (unless they have SYTYCD alum as dancers).

-SO GLAD Ryan and Rickey are safe! They are such a great partnership. You could tell they were a bit nervous, despite the crowd reaction.

-It was clear who the bottom couple was gonna be between Miranda/Robert and Sasha/Alexander. It’s funny that they paired the girl with the least exposure with the guy with arguably the most. Maybe it’ll help draw Miranda out. Their routine was athletic and I feel like the choreography was great, but it just didn’t come together. Whereas Sasha/Alexander’s routine was fantastic.

-GOPAK! That was funny. Both Amanda and I giggled at the flashback to Jeanine and Philip’s Gopak because it was a running joke on the tour, which we both attended in Atlanta. So funny. And the guest dancer Gennadi Saveliev was amazing. The height on his jumps was incredible.

-Mitchell’s solo was very good, controlled and powerful. So far, his personality is my least favorite (and Robert an annoying second least favorite) of the guys because he comes off very arrogant. But he can dance, for sure. I think it was Sasha who was jumping up and down in near the end (her hair gave her away, plus it’s her style).

-Jordan’s solo was a bit…gymnastic stripper-ish. I love her to death, but I don’t know that it was the strongest solo she could have presented. I like the music, though, and it fits her.

-Tadd’s solo was probably my favorite. It had so much character to it and really showed off his skills. He reminded me so much of Dominic in his 8 second intro during the performance night and a little bit here too, in his solo. Love him.

-Clarice’s solo had a few nice elements, but I was distracted by the weird handkerchief thing hanging from her hip. The first move was pretty awesome, though.

-Jess’s solo, too, had a ton of character. Like Tadd, he really took his time to display himself and his dancing, which is something I don’t think either of the girls did very well.

-Miranda did, however. Hers was probably the best of the girl’s solos. She had some amazingly high jumps and leaps, especially at the beginning, but it didn’t feel frantic.

-Robert’s solo was good, but Tadd’s and Jess’s were definitely better. He had such a wave of audience support though, all woo-ing for him. You could tell it took Cat by surprise a bit.

-I’ve been pretty Lady Gaga-‘d out lately. Her last few singles have not impressed me very much. But “Edge of Glory” reminds me of the songs of hers I’ve liked and the video was pretty good. It’s kinda cool that she had her tv premiere on SYTYCD during Season 4 AND that she’s gonna guest judge later in the season.

-WOW! I was pretty surprised and pleased that they’re not sending anybody home. Cat was DE-LIGHT-FUL during the whole bruhaha. It’s gonna be tough to see 2 couples go home next week, but it’s nice that we get to see them all dance one more week, right?

What do y’all think? some of you are, too“>Our reader Emily called me out on not having a place for her and other readers to share their thoughts. Here it is, go for it.

SYTYCD Top 20 Performance Show Thoughts!!

Hi All!! First, apologies for how late this is getting posted. I just graduated from college this past week so I’ve had no time to catch up on all things SYTYCD. I’ve just gotten home for a little 6 week vacation before I start my new job so my sleeping schedule is all out of whack. Anyway, I’ve just finished watching the Top 20 performance episode and all I can say is WOW! There were highs and lows, so let’s get to it!

LOVING the new stage! Eons better than the past 2 seasons, and the background looks a bit like the old stage! Progress!

Jordan and Tadd: Anyone who has read my comments since I started blogging on here knows how much I LOVE Sean Cheesman and his afro jazz. This one, however, I didn’t love so much. All the steps were there, but there was a groundedness in their feet that I just didn’t feel. If you want to see what I mean, check out this video from SYTYCD Canada season 1.

It features a hip hop dancer (Miles) and a ballerina (Allie) who actually both ended up in the top 4. They’re sitting in the movements, whereas I felt like Jordan and Tadd were very high on their feet, a little too light. They both kept up with the steps really well and seemed to enjoy themselves, but I felt like something was missing.

Sasha and Alexander: I kind of disagreed with the judges on this one, I enjoyed it. It wasn’t my favorite (I’ll get to that later) but I thought they were both very strong and dynamic dancers. For me, Sasha outdanced Alexander, but it kind of worked for me because she was supposed to be his conscience coming back to haunt him so I liked that image. I agreed with the judges that I wasn’t feeling the connection as much, but I have high hopes for them.

Clarice and Jess: Ugh, I WANTED to like this, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. I’m kind of our resident broadway geek, but this one just wasn’t my favorite. I thought Jess killed it, but his skill really made Clarice look overmatched. It reminded me somewhat of Benji and Donyelle’s 2nd broadway number from their season, “Le Jazz Hot” where all the steps were there, but something just felt really fake. I didn’t buy their chemistry, and I really wanted to because they are both so talented.

Ryan and Ricky: gosh they danced so beautifully together! technically, it was my favorite of the first hour, but the storyline had me a bit confused. Why was Ryan so smiley?! Anyway, I think they’re both going to go a long way, but I don’t want them to lose the story, it’s such a crucial part of connecting with the audience, both in the studio and at home.

Caitlynn and Mitchell (and Robert): I so wanted to see Caitlynn and Mitchell dance this together, because it seemed like they were getting on really well. I wasn’t as taken with her as the judges were, but I thought she and Robert danced really really well together. He helped steady her nerves, I think.

Miranda and Robert: I almost didn’t recognize Miranda without her curls!! To be thrown a ballroom piece week 1 when neither of the partners has a ballroom background is pretty rare, but with so many contemporary girls (and no pure hip hop girls) this season somebody had to draw the short straw. I’m not a technical expert in ballroom, so I’ll just say it was fun to watch. They kept up the energy and the jive bounce really well, though I hope Robert loses the Steve Urkel glasses soon, his schtick is gonna get old.

Missy and Wadi: From this point, for the most part, the performances were pretty spectacular. This piece was definitely interesting and very powerful and very different from anything Sean’s done in jazz on the show. Their connection was great and the use of the stage, though at some times it all felt a little disjointed. Nigel said this was his favorite piece Sean’s done on the show, I’d have to say mine was Russell and Noelle’s frog dance from Season 6, nobody’s quite matched that one yet.

Melanie and Marko: Wow. No words. So exquisite and simple and pure. I could feel the emotion emanating from every pour of their bodies. Their chemistry was off the charts and their technique was incredible. I would almost put this one in “If It Kills Me” territory of amazingness. My favorite of Travis’s is still “Fix You” from last season, but gosh this was so good. I had been waiting for one that would make me rewind it and punch the air as I watched, and this one was it. Marko’s legs as he did that slow cartwheel, holy cow! It’s a dance like this that makes me so happy they’ve gone back to the Top 20 format, we get to watch this partnership grow and develop over the next 5 weeks, and this is one I’m really really excited about.

Ashley and Chris: This is one where I think the music and the choreography got in each other’s way. Dual cheaters (or the subject of cheating in general) could be really entertaining or really serious (a la Ashleigh and Jakob from S6). With this one, it just kind of felt like they were getting fake mad at each other. I wanted more.

Iveta and Nick: I LOVE these two! They both have personality and are oozing with talent. To watch Nick pull of so effortlessly what has been named the dance of death on SYTYCD was such a joy. He went fullout into the piece, which is where so much of the trouble has happened in the past, dancers not going full out in the ballroom pieces. He got super lucky with a partner like Iveta, he was able to follow her lead but still had the confidence to be the leading man on the dance floor. Was his technique always there? I can’t say. But they got the pimp spot in the order and definitely were memorable.

The performances definitely got better in the 2nd half of the show, but overall it was a pretty great night! So now I hand it over to you! Thoughts? Predictions for the first two who will be leaving us?

Odd and Random SYTYCD 5/2/10

First – Ellenore dishes on her beauty secrets. Did you know she’s working with the deodorant Secret? It’s mentioned in her interview on this blog, but I haven’t been able to find anything else out. If you do, let us know!

Next, you have to read this “Conversation with Parks and Recreation‘s Nick Offerman” for a hidden gem. Nick Offerman could otherwise be known as Mr. Megan Mullally, and in this interview, he talks about her past as a ballerina and their love of So You Think You Can Dance (look about 3/4s of the way down). Whoo hoo, shout out!

Then, check out this wonderful interview with one of my personal favorite SYTYCD alumni (and now a Season 7 All-Star), Lauren Gottlieb. She talks about being on Glee and also being on Ghost Whisperer with Jennifer Love Hewitt. Dang, guess I missed out by not watching that. 🙂 Luckily, we can probably still catch it on Hulu or something.

Apparently, Cat has a QVC line of jewelry? And one of her Cat Deely Vintage for QVC bracelets was featured in this month’s InStyle Magazine, according to the blog. Check out this cute feature on Cat from last year. Aha! After some poking around on the InStyle website, I found this little write up about Cat and QVC. But, I haven’t been able to find the actual bracelet the blog piece mention. Somebody buy the issue and scan the pic in! 🙂

And then last, but not least, dance has become a serious political issue in England, due in part to the popularity of shows like “Strictly Come Dancing” and “So You Think You Can Dance.”

[11:28 p.m. Addition: Just had to add this one. Has nothing to do with SYTYCD, except maybe this guy should be a dance guest on an elimination night this season. Lol. Seen here.]
