SYTYCDC 3 – Stand Outs and BG Info from Calgary/Halifax Auditions

It surely looks like an incredibly busy week! I am back with more (significant) background information that viewers should know about the stand out dancers from the Calgary & Halifax auditions. Somebody mentioned to me before (I forgot who) that it is so much better if we knew more about the dancers, individually beforehand, so that we have a clearer understanding of why they dance the way they dance, how much training they actually have, and ultimately, who we should vote for. I couldn’t agree more.

CALGARY AUDITIONS

Jo Roy 18 Edmonton > Amazing blend of styles. She has this uniqueness about her that really makes her stand out. Love her technique and she has undeniable talent. I would like to see her krump it out!

Kevin Howe 21 Ottawa, ON > Auditioned in Season 1 but cut in Ballroom round during Finals. He is obviously a competition dancer and is very technically trained. He seems to be quite popular in the dance world (Canadian one, at least) already.

Jera Wolfe 19 NS > SO AMAZING. My new favourite already. 😀 Has an amazing repetoire of styles to dance from. He blends styles almost effortlessly. I believe he will be a sure in for the Top 20. He is auditioning with one of his own pieces in the video below (in which he looks like an amazing dancing vampire HAHA):

Julia Harnett 25 Calgary > Auditioned with partner Rufino Rodriguez (23). Her ethnicity is already of interest to me. She is trained in ballet AND ballroom – she will definitely be a force to  be reckoned with, if she makes the Top 20, in which I believe she will.

HALIFAX AUDITIONS (“Haligonians” … Teehee!)

Yuliya Zavadska & Sharone Lewit ? Vaughan ON > Love that they’re showing how multicultural and welcoming Canada is. I don’t live far from Vaughan at all, but I’ve never heard of this duo. The Internet has a lot of search results for Yuliya though. She seems to be very good. Top 20 material, if they wanted a ballroom girl.

Alexandra Crenian ? Mississauga ON > Now, her audition wasn’t shown, but she was briefly shown during the “shaking/nervous” scene and also when they showed who made it to the Finals. She is Miles Faber (SYTYCDC 1)’s girlfriend. I’m not kidding. She’s a gorgeous and talented one. I briefly ‘met’ her at the iDance 2010 convention in Mississauga and she says she teaches in Mississauga most of the time. She was Miles’ assistant and this girl is amazing at hip-hop. I think she will be a part of the Top 20, TBH!

Curtis Jean 21 Halifax > At first, I thought he was a bit underrated. Yes, not overrated. And then I realized his moves were quite sloppy and he acted as if he was superior to everyone else. And then he had some  muscle spasms and pain. And then he quit. And then I was like – okay no more love for this guy. Sorry!

SO THERE WE HAVE IT! Calgary & Halifax auditions! I think they cut out the Saint John auditions this year? Correct me if I’m wrong. I actually missed the Vancouver auditions tonight believing they would air at 9PM, but in reality, they aired at 8PM. Poo. See you all next time! Enjoy!

Twitter News

I posted SYTYCD Canada Twitter Accounts the other day, but today I was looking to see what some of the SYTYCD personalities had posted about the Toronto Auditions or the show in general. Also, I saw a few of the choreographers and judges chatting on twitter which makes me excited that we may have some awesome people coming to Toronto for SYTYCD Canada.

Benji chatting with judge Luther Brown:

..maybe coming to the show as a guest?

Cool news, Miles was in Vancouver to audition for the CWs new show Hell Cats staring Ashley Tisdale and Aly Michalka.

Also, look who is headed to Toronto:

I am sure she will guest host and/or choreo… to be honest, I prefer her as a choreographer because she is amazing and as a judge, well, she just get too emotional one way or another. I know she is working with Blake for his video for “RELAX” They are in rehearsals now.

Finally, Blake reminds you to tune in tonight:

SYTYCD Season 1 Winner Nico Archambault Marries Wynn Holmes

So You Think You Can Dance Season 1 winner, Nico Archambault married long time girlfriend Wynn Holmes.

Nico and Wynn at the 2009 Juno Awards

CTV Reports:

The 25-year-old, who won the first season of CTV’s “So You Think You Can Dance Canada,” tells The Canadian Press that the pair tied the knot July 10 in Montreal.

Archambault says he prefers to keep the details private but confirms that it was a small, outdoor ceremony and that the groomsmen included “Dance Canada” Season 1 finalist Miles Faber.

Archambault and Holmes have been dating for three years and have their own choreography company called Street Parade.

They’ve also worked together in the dance/rock group the Pinup Saints, in which she’s a lead singer and keyboardist.

Archambault says they haven’t had time for a honeymoon yet as they’ve been choreographing moves for the Quebec dance film “Sur le rythme,” in which he also stars.

He says it’s set to hit theatres in April 2011.

Odd and Random SYTYCD – 5/21/10

First, you HAVE to check this one out. Can’t stress that enough. Go now. You didn’t go yet? Here’s why you should GO take a look: behind-the-scenes video footage of the photo shoot that brought us the awesome sexy photo from my last post. GREAT quotes from Adam, Cat, Neil and Pasha (standing next to each other!), Courtney, Mark, Twitch, Dominic (with Comfort and Allison) and Lauren. If you STILL need convincing, check out this quote from Lauren:

“When we were contestants, they wouldn’t tell us anything beforehand. And so now we kind of know how it happens. But I know them [the judges/producers]. They’re going to try to throw us for a loop too.”

Anybody got some guess what the surprises might be? Can y’all handle any more surprises and twists this season? I’m not sure I can, though they’ve all been good so far. 🙂 I have a BIG guess on what one new surprise could (or should) be. I’ll post that later, separately.

Here’s one with a shout-out to Season 7 All-Star Courtney Galiano, though you don’t actually see her (unfortunately). I include it because it’s definitely a bit odd. And it’s nice to see people dancing, even if they AREN’T Courtney.

In SYTYCD UK news, last season’s contestant Alastair Postlethwaite will be judging ‘Tarletons Got Talent’.

According to this article, SYTYCD (U.S., that’s us) is Canada’s #1 summer series. When does SYTYCD air? That’s one I haven’t gotten into yet. If it’s anything like SYTYCD UK and AU, I’m in, in, in. I know many of you are already on board.

Speaking of SYTYCD Canada, some former contestants will appear in the tv movie Turn the Beat Around, including Season 1 finalists: Romina D’Ugo, Miles Faber and Natalli Reznik. Check out this quote, from Seventeen magazine:

If you loved movies like Step Up, Save The Last Dance, and Center Stage, then you’ll do backflips for Turn The Beat Around.

I wonder how (if) we can see that movie here in the States?

There’s some great quotes from Nigel in this Zap2it.com blog, but I don’t like the opening lines:

“You never heard of the dancers before, and likely won’t again, but the raw talent on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” blows away competitors on other dance shows.”

Okay, the second half of that sentence is okay. But having All-Stars in SYTYCD Season 7 is clearly meant to help rectify any potential “likely won’t again” situations.

Here’s an Instyle interview with Cat about her vintage-inspired jewelry collection for QVC. You really should check it out – I love what Cat says about her doing the “leg work” for folks who might find vintage hunting intimidating (like me) but do like the look.

Here’s an interview Lauren did a little while ago with Zap2it.com about her Dancing with the Stars and American Idol favorites. She confesses that she has to watch everything dance on t.v. 🙂 Me too, Lauren.

And here’s another older piece about Kherington Payne and Jonathan Platero joining the cast of a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Enjoy all the random and odd!

Which New Choreographers Should SYTYCD Bring In?

With last week’s surprising news about the departure of longtime choreographer Mia Michaels, the door has been left open for some fresh new faces to possibly make their mark on the SYTYCD scene. I went to my trusty pal YouTube to find some choreographers I think might be good fits for SYTYCD.

Shannon Mather is a great choreographer with a surprising connection to SYTYCD. Her brother is S1 superstar Blake McGrath!! She and Blake work together often. I found this video of a piece Shannon choreographed and it’s danced by none other than Nathan Trasoras!

Speaking of Blake, he’s done some great work for SYTYCD Canada, but I’d love to see him come back to the US show to do a couple pieces, since Canada’s season is just about to end. Here is one of his pieces featuring eventual season 1 champ Nico Archambault and his partner Arassay Reyes.

This is another one of Blake’s pieces featuring S1 finalist Miles Faber and his partner Lisa Auguste. I’ve watched a lot of SYTYCD videos, and I can personally say that I’ve never been affected by a piece the way I was affected by this one. It’s artistry in motion.

Here’s Sean Cheesman, also from SYTYCD Canada. He’s a super versatile choreographer whose pieces range from afro-jazz to broadway (in Canada, they call it “musical theatre”. He also does contemporary. I’m including two of his pieces here. The afro-jazz piece is from season 1 and it features Vincent and Lisa. I think the mixing of their skin tones with their white costumes is exquisite. And the dancing is very grounded and they move with a lot of purpose.

The second piece is from this current season of SYTYCD Canada and it’s a musical theatre piece featuring finalists Tara-Jean and Everett. Everett is a tapper, and Sean was able to stick a lot of tap in there and he knew that Everett could pull it off. It has great musicality and they both ooze personality. With the possibility of as many as 3 tappers in the S6 top 20, having Sean, who has a tap background, could be a great pull.

If they’re looking for some fresh hip hop voices, Luther Brown might be a guy to consider. Here are a couple of his pieces. The first one features Nico and Arassay from SYTYCD Canada. It’s actually done to the same song that NappyTabs used for S4 with Twitch and Kherington and the “jail break” routine.

The second piece features S2 top 8 guy Cody and his partner, top 6 girl Melanie. They spent the season with the reputation much that like of US S5’s Randi and Evan, “they’re just so cute!” They both proved to be chameleons throughout their time on the show.

Gustavo Vargas is a latin ballroom choreographer from SYTYCD Canada, here are a couple of his pieces.

Salsa (Nico and Arassay)

Salsa (Nico and Natalli)

These are just a few names of people who could be a great fit on the new season of SYTYCD. Are there other people whose work you’d like to see on the show?

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Flashback – Lara and Miles to Benji Choreography

This dance was just something else. Lara Smythe is incredibly beautiful in it and Miles just cruises through it so nice. Plus, this is Benji Schwimmer choreography at its best. Benji’s never done better.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Winner – Nicolas Archambault

Congratulations to Nicolas Archambault for winning So You Think You Can Dance Canada!! I must admit that I was personally a little bit disappointed. I’d really grown to love Allie, but being honest with myself I can say that Nico was a great dancer and deserved to win also. I guess we all just have different preferences in the dancing we like and I preferred Allie to Nico.

Of course, for those of you who have been watching and voting in our So You Think You Can Dance Canada poll. You would have already known that Nico was going to win it all. What can I say? My readers are the best So You Think You Can Dance fans on the planet and they know their dancing.

Before we end the Canadian season of So You Think You Can Dance, I want to give a big shout out to Canada’s dancers. It’s been great fun to watch the dancing. I honestly don’t see a huge difference between Canada and the US. They are both wonderful to watch with unique dancers in both locations. Thanks for getting us through the fall and early Winter. Now I guess I just have to find So You Think You Can Dance Australia to get me through to Spring.

Best of luck to Nico Archambault and the other members of the top 4: Allie Bertram, Miles Faber and Natalli Reznik. Enjoy yourselves on the So You Think You Can Dance Canada tour.
