Vegas Week Part Two

Part two of the Vegas week call backs begins with the always interesting group round. Much to my surprise, there weren’t too many train wrecks. Perhaps the dancers are learning what to expect when they get to this round and have made the right decisions when working together. Only a few were cut after groups.

Choreography Round 3

Team Stage gets to learn a jazz routine from Sonya Tayeh. While Team Street get to work with NappyTabs. What I really loved was watch Tabitha showing the contestants what their choreography is supposed to look like. I’m not sure if they have done that in the past but it is nice to see what the choreography is supposed to look like.

Cat took notice that Travis was starting to get competitive, and he replied with how he lost the show the first time around. The same is true about Twitch. Both mentors were the runner-up on their season, so it’s safe to say that both would like a member from their team to win.

Now the moment we have been waiting for, the green mile and the reveal of the Top 20 dancers for Season 12. I correctly predicted 9 of the 20 dancers, it would have been 10 had Denys not dropped out. Still not sure why he really decided to drop out but at least he can still say he won the Canadian version of SYTYCD. Also, one of the top 20 has been injured and will no longer be able to compete but of course we won’t find out what happened till next week.

Here is your Top 20

Team Stage: Merissa Milele, Edson Juarez, Moises Parra, Kate Harpootlian, Hailee Payne, Jim Nowakowski, Alexia Meyer, Derek Piquette, Darion Flores, and Gaby Diaz

Team Street: Alain Hurrikane, Jessica Jrabone, Yorelis Apolinario, Lily Frias, Ariana Crowder, Virgil Godson, Eddie Eskridge, Megz Alfonso, Burim Jusufi, and Jaja Vankova

Vegas Week: Part One

First off let me just start out by saying that the next round of auditions are back in Las Vegas, besides Vegas Week is more fun to say. With the format change I was somewhat unsure as to what to expect from this week. I do like that they kept the teams separated and it seemed to allow the dancers a little more time to rest…well if they were actually able too. Travis and tWitch join the judges to see their team for the first time. While they don’t have a say in who stays or goes, they can offer the judges there input.

ROUND 1: One minute solos.
One minute really isn’t enough time to really show what you got, so the dancers needed to have their A game ready. The static thing going on with the sound while trying to watch this first part.

ROUND 2: Choreography

Team Stage is up first and they get to learn a contemporary piece from their own mentor Travis Wall. Since it was Travis’s choreography, he seemed to act more as a judge.

Team Street takes on the choreography of Jamal Sims. Here’s where things get a little rough. Many of the street dancers are freestyle and have never tried to learn choreography. So the first round was almost a blood bath…well for the guys anyways. The girls out shined many of the guys and began to agree with tWitch, that his team could be made up of all girls, Nigel, definitely lit a fire under them with some tough love.

Round 3:

Team Stage had an hour to learn a tough Broadway routine from “On The Town” choreographer Josh Bergasse. Things start to fall apart for team stage. We also saw the first injury to take a dancer out of the competition and that’s just heartbreaking.

Team Street worked with one of my favorites Dave Scott. A much better day that the first. Loved seeing tWitch being a mentor and helping the contestants ease their nerves, and it’s also fun to watch his reactions while watching the dancers.

At the end of part one 36 Stage, 38 Street dancers remain. Next week we continue with the last two rounds, which includes the dreaded group round.By the end of the episode the top 20 will be revealed.

New York Auditions

New York wraps up the first round of auditions, before Vegas week. Thankfully, there was some more diversity in which auditions we saw. Even saw a few of the bad auditions, not sure why I thought the breaker ballet guy was going to be good.  We were treated with a little preview of Vegas week. Even with the format change, Vegas is still going to be an intense week.

STAGE 30

Alexia Meyer: Great dancer. What I loved about her was her musicality. She had movements that went with certain beats of the song.

Ryan Raffloer: His mom forced him to dance, too funny. Great solo for a ballroom dancer. Definitely, saw the Dmitry reference and maybe the attitude of Neil Haskell.

Darious Drooh: Loved seeing him and he friend dance the choreography from Paula’s Cold Hearted Snake music video.

STREET 21

Virgil Gaston: His smile did remind me of FikShun. He has also put in a lot of work since his audition in season 8. I can see him in the top 10 stage dancers.

Korey Cleveland: Honestly, even though I thought he was good, I really want to see him give that 90 day chip to Nigel.

Justin Ballasy: The first example of a style that could go towards either street or stage. Justin is an amazing tapper/hoofer but I agree with the judges that he need to work on his musicality.

Final total of dancers moving on to Vegas 219. Street: 105  Stage: 114

Side note: Great to see an update on season 11 winner Ricky. I tried to spot him at the Tony Awards but had no luck.

Los Angeles Auditions

So tonight’s episode we are given a little more information for Vegas week. Team Stage will face choreography from Sonya, Josh Vergas, and Travis Wall. Team Street will face choreography from Dave Scott, Jamal Sims, and Nappy Tabs.

So Nigel stated last week that the LA auditions were some of the best auditions ever…well for this season at least. He wasn’t wrong the show started off strong but sort of lost steam for me. This episode was heavy on Team Street side of the auditions that we got to see. We did get to see some of team stage but most were lost in the montages. Seriously, wish the producers would show an equal amount from each team.

So I started to write down my standout but I decided I just wanted to enjoy the show. I love seeing SYTYCD Alumni at the auditions. Also love seeing familiar faces return for another chance, in particular, Jaja. If she isn’t in the top 20 this year, I may throw something at my tv. So moving on to Vegas were 29 Stage dancers and 24 Street dancers.

Team Stage: 84 Team Street: 84

Detroit Auditions

Tonight’s auditions took us to the motor city; Detroit, MI.  I felt like Jason was starting to feel a little bit more comfortable in the judging role. Detroit seemed to lack stage dancers, there were a few but the auditions were mainly street dancers. Team Stage had 12 dancers make it to Vegas and Team Street had 23 dancer move on to the next round. Who were your standouts? Here are mine.

STAGE

Christine Shepard, Brooke Fong, Kelsey Rose Young and Gabby Diaz

STREET

Kenya Sutton (Queen of Detroit), Samantha Reyes (Sam I Am), Roydell Shannon and BamBam (how cute was he)

Total Dancers through to Vegas: Team Stage: 55   Team Street: 60

Next week is the LA Auditions and from the preview I am excited to see all of the talent the LA has to offer.

Season 12 Begins….

In two weeks the new season of So  You Can Dance begins on Monday, June 1st on Fox at 8/7pm. Yes, you read that right SYTYCD has moved to Monday nights. Why the move? Well I’m not sure but if I had to guess it might have something to do with trying to obtain more viewers and receive better ratings. Also, they might be trying avoid being in competition with America’s Got Talent. I don’t mind the switch of the nights…mainly because the Dancing With the Stars current season will be over. Another new addition to this season is mentor dancers for both stage and street. Travis Wall and Twitch have been selected for the job.  Which side will you be on Stage or  Street.

Mary Murphy’s Gone from SYTYCD and SYTYCD 2015 Audition Cities

Thanks to Amanda for covering the new judges for SYTYCD 2015 (Jason Derulo and Paula Abdul and for sharing the dates of the tryouts in New York City. Amanda wasn’t sure what was going to happen with Mary, but it seems clear that Mary Murphy is gone from SYTYCD. Personally, I didn’t hate Mary as a judge when she came back the second time, but I still thought she didn’t offer much value. It felt far too manufactured and forced. So, I’m glad for the change. You can also see that Mary’s gone since they’ve posted a picture of Nigel, Jason and Paula at the judges table.

We all know that SYTYCD was renewed with changes to the format. I think we’re all interested to see how Stage Dancers versus Street Dancers is going to work out. I’m personally excited by the idea. I never felt like it was fair that the street dancers always got sent home when they couldn’t do the other styles as well. The street dancers’ solos were usually better than the stage dancer solos (especially ballroom).

Speaking of ballroom. I’m still interested to see how ballroom fits into the new format. I assume they’ll be considered stage dancers. Although, what if some street salsa dancer comes on the show? Will they be put in the street category instead of stage? That would be fun to see. Although, I still think SYTYCD doesn’t do ballroom dancers justice when they don’t allow them to dance with a partner. It’s just not the same.

Long story short, I’m excited for the new season. I think it’s a fresh new take while still having the dancing and choreography we love. In fact, I think this could really expand the type of choreography we get on the show.

Here are the dates and locations of the SYTYCD 2015 auditions:
Dallas, Texas
Saturday, Feb. 14
Southern Methodist University

Detroit, Mich.
Sunday, Feb. 22
Fillmore Detroit

Memphis, Tenn.
Sunday, March 8
Orpheum Theatre

Los Angeles, Calif.

So You Think You Can Dance season 12 premieres on Fox in May.

Just call me Charlie...but where are my angels?

New Judges for Season 12

Today SYTYCD announced that two new judges will be joining Nigel at the Judges table for the new season. Joining Nigel will be Jason Derulo and Paula Abdul. I’m feel okay with these two as judges. I enjoyed Jason on the show last season, as for Paula, I’m surprised it has taken them this long to get her to be on the show as more that a guest judge.

However, I’m not sure what this means for Mary or any of the other judges. They really didn’t go into that much detail other just state the facts of Jason and Paula’s careers and achievements. The format (Stage vs Street) seems to be part the reason for adding new judges, which makes sense. I sent a tweet out to Nigel to see if we will see any of the other regular judge this season but I haven’t heard back just yet. I think we will see some of our favorite guest judges during the season and maybe some of the choreographers being a judge. When it come to the street dancing I would like to see Chris Scott as a judge.

You can find the article on the SYTYCD Facebook page or over at the Fox website. Also the dates for the auditions are listed and they begin this weekend in New York.

*Spoiler Alert* Season 10 Finale

SPOILER ALERT! DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE SHOW!

It has been another great season and it’s always sad to see it go. Before I get to the run down of the show and of course the winners, I am happy to announce that Fox and Nigel announced that there will be a SEASON 11! Now on with the show that had a 17 min intermission (Presidential speech), well for the east coast. We had Judges favorites, top 4 favorites, and some surprises.

The Top 20 are back, even Jade even thought he can dance cause his knee isn’t fully healed yet. A fun routine choreographed by Ivan from season 2 (who has choreographed for Justin Timberlake).

Paula Abdul Favorite: Edge of Glory, Paul and Makensie

Jasmine H. Favorite: Blurred Lines she danced with Marko. She surprised me with this pick.

Adam Shankman: he picked the FikShun and Twitch hip-hop to Hello Good Morning.

The Top 4 got to see a special screening of Battle of the Year, that features Dominic from season 3. Also Legacy from season 6 is also in the movie (look it up on IMBD if you don’t believe me).

Nigel’s Pick: This really was a no brainer, I knew he would pick a tap number, I just didn’t know which one. It’s fitting that he chose the one with all of the tappers from this season.

Twitch’s Favorite: His choice surprised me as well, mainly just the fact that it was a Broadway number. Kiss of the Spiderwoman- Nico and Hayley.

Aaron’s Favorite: Kissing You with all-star Kathryn

They replayed the sand number with the Top 10 guys, which is actually one on my absolute favorites of the season.

Cat’s Favorite: Run the World, Jasmine and Comfort hip-hop

Mary’s Favorite: Medicine, Tucker and Robert

Puttin’ on the Ritz: Top 20. Really loved this innovative number that NappyTabs created.

Then another favorite of mine Mark and Jenna.

FikShun and Amy both picked the same dance as their favorite. After Party, the bell hop hip-hop.

So we are treated to the “partnership” of Nigel and Mary. Though the video montage, I’m sure I wasn’t the only that was wondering where they were going with this…a dance with Nigel and Mary. This did make my night, especially Adam not wanting to be left out of the fun.

The Top 5 moments from the Auditions with the number one spot going to Movement Box.

Twitter’s Travis Wall routine Favorite: Seriously no surprise that it is Wicked Game that he danced with Amy.

The Top 10 and All-Stars perform and fun surfs up number by Nappy Tabs.

Now time for the Winner’s, Cat announced that a girl got the top number of votes. With that said she began with the guys and then the girls.

The Season 10 Winners ARE….FICKSHUN and AMY!!! Congrats to them both and Aaron and Jasmine. What a great season can’t wait till next year.
