SYTYCD Season 9: Top 20 Power Rankings

Wow… just wow. I just wrote a few quick thoughts on all the routines of the night and tossed a few polls asking for your opinions on which routines you enjoyed, and which dancers you’d love to see move on based on what we saw tonight. What I am going to do is rank all the routines we saw tonight from what I really enjoyed to what was forgettable. Then I will rank all the guys and all the girls w/ no real commentary. Let’s see how this goes.

TOP THREE ROUTINES:
1. Lindsay Arnold & Cole Horibe – Paso Doble
I mean come on! That was almost too good to be true. Such power, such strength, such passion and fire. I knew that Cole had some prior dancing training in addition to martial arts, but I would like to think that it is because of the martial arts that he is so clearly able to bring forth the necessary power and fire that the man needs in a proper paso doble. Lindsay at first came across as a bit of a wholesome, sweet kind of girl and then she comes out all guns blazing and I feel like I am getting a bit of the case of the whiplash because I didn’t see that coming a mile away! At first I thought that of the two Ballroom Barbies, Witney would win out, but man right now? I don’t know, I think Lindsay is making a very good case for herself here… and personally I think this is going to be a very strong partnership down the road.

2. Audrey Case & Matthew Kazmierczak – Contemporary
It’s a Travis Wall routine, so what is not to love? In all honesty though, I really did enjoy this routine a lot… these two just seem to work together so effortlessly. Audrey just seems to float in the air as opposed to jumping up there. Prior to today’s routine, Audrey didn’t really seem to stick out much for me. She hasn’t much more since except when she’s dancing with Matthew and Matthew I really really liked. Granted between the two Jazz girls I see myself drawn more to Audrey over Tiffany, but that again could be because I liked this routine just slightly more than the previous one. Perhaps it is the fact that Audrey just seems to emote that much more than Tiffany did… who knows. In the end this was a very strong routine and definitely one of the more memorable ones.

3. Amelia Lowe & Will Thomas – Pop-fusion/Hip Hop
Can’t help it, I’m drawn to this dance. They looked like they were having just so much fun in this routine. I would say that they are playing a bit of a “cat and mouse” game here, except I think they are suppose to be both cats, in which case… MEOW! I didn’t know much about Will Thomas prior to the Meet the Top 20 episode and honestly, he really caught my attention right away. In this routine the craziness between Will and Amelia was just fun to watch. I am so sure that Will was having so much fun playing with Amelia. I watched the routine over and over again because I found myself just smiling as I am watching them dance.

MIDDLE FOUR ROUTINES (this is probably the most difficult four to put together)
4. Eliana Girard & Cyrus Spencer – Broadway
I’ll agree that this didn’t really show off the dancing strengths for Eliana, but dammit it was fun to watch and really that’s all that matters at the end of the day. Cyrus picked up the choreography rather well for the first time out of the gate. The thing I really like about Broadway routines is that they require a hell of a whole lot of personality, unfortunately that is also at the sacrifice of dance at times, which is what seems to be the case here. What Cyrus lacks in training, he more than makes up for it in personality, charisma and entertainment value. Eliana with her dance/performing background has charisma and entertainment value for days, so I see this as a very good match. Here’s hoping that they could do just as well in the upcoming week.

5. Janelle Issis & Dareian Kujawa – African Jazz
I might be in the minority when it comes to this routine, but I really really liked these two together. I didn’t know what to expect but the intricacies in this routine and movement really came together and if either dancer misses anything, then the whole dance is shot (much like Sean Cheesman’s other routine, but more on that later). As I said before, what these two brought to the table is chemistry and entertainment. There were a few times where they were actually off, but like I said… I really preferred this routine of the two that Sean has created and having two dancers that connect really helps the routine along.

6. Amber Jackson & Nick Bloxsom-Carter – Viennese Waltz
When I saw Nick for the first time in the Meet the Top 20 episode, I liked him, a lot. So I was a bit sad when they already started critiquing him in the Meet the Top 20 episode. Amber Jackson I remembered seeing from previous episodes but almost saw nothing of in Season 9, so when there were rumors swirling around that they were paired together I got scared because these were two fairly unknown dancers who did not have much screen time, how would they fare? Well for a Viennese Waltz they did rather well. One thing I really love about this particular dance was that it really felt like you were dancing amongst the clouds, like a dream. Personally I think they did rather well and should be ok. Only time will tell

7. Witney Carson & Chehon Wespi-Tschopp – Samba
I had a rough time between this routine and number 8. This had a lot of fire and I really love Chehon a lot in this routine. He has very good technique but I agree with the judges that he just seems to be trying too hard. If he can get his head out of the game and just feel the dance it would flow so much better. There isn’t much to say about Witney except that she did excel rather well in this number. Though Chehon seemed out of place in this routine, I don’t think it is going to be much of an issue in later routines since hopefully by then he’ll start emoting more into the dances and routines.

BOTTOM THREE ROUTINES
8. Tiffany Maher & George Lawrence II – Contemporary
The reason I ended up placing them a lot lower than I originally thought I would is because I had to separate myself from the awe that is Sonya’s reinvention of herself into this contemporary movement from the dancers themselves and how they performed the routine. I really really do like this routine, but for some reason other than the fact that this is atypical of Sonya’s routines this was just not a memorable routine for me. This couple emoted rather well overall and I really like George in this routine, but Tiffany just wasn’t memorable for me. So I don’t know

9. Alexa Anderson & Daniel Baker – Jazz
This was a very technically difficult routine and given to two really technically advanced dancers it should have shone but it fell flat. I didn’t feel any chemistry between the two of them let alone with the audience. Between the two I preferred Daniel over Alexa, but then again I think they should have been paired with different partners, perhaps they would have done better emotionally. Granted I felt that Daniel was more emotionally committed to this particular routine over Alexa, but then again I am probably in the minority in this.

10. Janaya French & Brandon Mitchell – Hip Hop
This was another rather forgettable routine for the most part. For some reason I didn’t feel a connection between the two dancers and it felt a little bit like a “dance by numbers” kind of routine with the emotions and facials becoming little more than an afterthought, particularly on Janaya’s side of the fence. I really enjoyed Brandon’s interpretation for the most part, but again the routine as a whole seemed to have fallen flat for me which is rather sad since in any other season they would have been middle of the pack or higher.

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

Power Rankings SYTYCD Canada Top 22

It’s been a while since I did power rankings so bare with me and PLEASE comment below if you agree, disagree, or have something more to say.

We are just getting to know the dancers so I find it even more challenging. Also, I am not a dancing expert so mostly I judge on what I find entertaining and make me want to pick up the phone and vote.

Top 3
1. Hanni & Tara-Jean- Jazz – Nico & Wynn
That’s how Strong my Love is – Otis Redding
1877 977 4611

I am a MASSIVE Nico fan and also TaraJean, so this was just a favourite before it started! It was so cute, TJ was like a ball of sunshine in her yellow dress and beaming smile. It was the only routine of the night to give me chills and therefore gets my #1 ranking… the playful chase and blanket romp was awesome… They saved the best for last.

2. Bree & Edgar – Hip Hop – Jaeblaze
O.M.G – Usher
1877 977 4610

Canada is known for it’s hot routines. This routine was just that. Grinding and thursting – wow! It seemed a bit spastic at times, maybe because it was so fast, but I really enjoyed it a lot. They rocked it! Mary even put Bree on the Hot Tamale Train!

3. Danielle & Sebastian – Bollywood – Longinus Fernandes
Tera Hi Jalwa – Sajid – Wajid (Wanted Cast)
1877 977 4605

Bollywood was good for Sebastian and Danielle also did well… very entertaining. The skirt change could have gone very wrong but it, like the last jump, went without a hitch. Longinus Fernandes is amazing and he is the choreographer from Slumdog Millionaire. I am a HUGE Sebastian Fan, he reminds me of Mark from USA SYTYCD and I love his quirkiness.

Middle 5

4. Jera & Kirsten – Contemporary – Mandy Moore
“Fireflies” by Ron Pope
1877 977 4602

Beautiful. I kept moving this into #3 then #4. Mandy’s a great choreographer. Her feet bothered me at times, I am not sure why, maybe it is the ballet point? After lot’s of bumps and falls in rehearsal they really mastered it. I have no idea what Tre was talking about “watching Twilight on stage” but I enjoyed the routine. This would have been #3 except for her feet annoying me.

5. Janick & Shavar – Afro-Jazz – Sean Cheesman
Dances with wood / baba – Mickey Hard, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju & Giovanni Hidalgo
1877 977 4608

I personally love Sean Cheesman’s Afro-Jazz most of the time. They had the jumps and moves and the outfits just complimented their moves. The drop spin was awesome as were the air headstand flip thing. I think people should vote for this, it was entertaining and well done. I especially loved the all at the end.

6. Jonathan & Kloe – Hip Hop – Sho-Tyme
X Gon’ Give it to Ya – DMX
1877 977 4606

He was really good, she wasn’t bad… DMX is hard and their moves needed to be harder. That being said, it was entertaining and I think people may vote for them. She kept smiling which looked really strange given the moves… but he got his face down.

7. Yonni & Claudia – Salsa – Tony & Meredith
Calabria 2008 ft Natasja – Enur
1 877 977 4601

White outfit was hot, her blue frills were sexy, great personality, perfect genre for them. Slight fall which looked to be his fault, though the judges did not mention it. She was more in her element than he. Still nice chemistry and a fun routine. I think I am ranking this a bit low, they were so amazing… gah! Too hard to choose this first week.

8. Denys & Amanda – Tango – Tony & Meredith
Grand Guiiignol – Bajofondo
1877 977 4603

Her legs shook a lot and looked awkward at times, but this isn’t her genre. Luckily she had Denys in his genre to lead her and lead her he did. I think tango is a tough first week draw. It felt awkward at times and it wasn’t a favourite of the night at all. Side note – poor girl had bruises all up and down her legs. Mary is hilarious throwing her papers all over the place. To be honest I fast forwarded through a lot of the judges, they didn’t see to be offering a critique but instead sugar coating and spewing random stuff.

Bottom 3

9. Nathalie & Mackenzie – Viennese Waltz – Pierre Allaire
For the Nights I can’t Remember – Hedley
1877 977 4609

Beautiful, Mackenzie is all kinds of sexy. The flip/ lift was fabulous and it felt like a more modern version of the waltz. Technically, I can’t comment, but I enjoyed watching. They did have great chemistry and handled a tough dance well together.

10. Charlene & Jeff – Jive – Danny Arbour
Celebrity Status (Shake Shake) – Marianas Trench
1877 977 4604
Rough spin, but nice lift. Very fun routine. I didn’t like the judges all saying they were “cute” how annoying. It was a it slow for a jive and had awkward moments whichis why I am putting it in the bottom 3

11. Jesse & Julia – New Disco – Melissa Williams
Fame – Lady Gaga
1877 977 4607

Lot’s of fog, props, not sure it enhanced dancing or distracted… incredible outfit, she looked almost nude. Powerful movements, I didn’t see chemistry like some other couples. I could be terribly wrong, it has been a while since I did power rankings but I just don’t think this one will do as well.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Top 8 Results Show

The opening routein by Tyce Diorio was awesome. I am a little upset with the camera men I felt like I was missing a lot of awesome moves because they were zoomed in on certain people.

Also, Next Tuesday Mia Michaels is choreographing the group routine….. exciting! I did my Power Rankings this week but was off quite a bit. Here are Tonight’s Results.

Girls

Jayme Rae – Safe (As I predicted)
Kim – Not Safe (Not as I predicted)
Tara-Jean – Safe (Not as I predicted)
Melanie – Not Safe (Not as I predicted)

Boys

Cody – Not Safe (As I predicted)
Vincent – Safe (As I predicted)
Emanuel – Safe (Not as I predicted)
Everett – Not Safe (Not as I predicted)

I was way off with predictions this week.

Solos

Kim – Sexy, hot, hard hitting
Melanie – Pretty, passionate, full
Cody – cute, quirky, fun
Everett – Pure talent, entertaining

Good-Bye

Kim & Cody

Final Thoughts

If you had asked me a couple weeks ago I would not be upset if Kim went home but I was really starting to like her and so it was sad to see her leave. Cody I adore but I knew he wouldn’t make it to the end. I am plesantly surprised Melanie is still here, she was my favourite from day one. Final 6 … this will only get more difficult!

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Power Rankings Top 8

What a night. I can honestly say we have an unbelievable Top 8. And Mia is right, our Top 4 girls are the best i have seen!!!

Last week I predicted who would go home, however it is getting so difficult. I can say who I feel should be in the bottom or who I think Canada will vote for.

Mia Michaels (with a new shaved head), Dan Karaty, Tre Armstrong and Jean-Marc Genereux were judges and we had Nico Archambault debut as a SYTYCD choreographer. It was indeed a special night.

Although during rehearsals there were multiple injuries with Everett suffering from a bleeding nose from a few kicks in the face to Emmanuel’s sprained ankle (and his fingers are still bandaged) but the show must go on – and it did – and it was spectacular!

Top 4 Guys Dance
Jazz with Melissa Williams
“Beggin” The Four Seasons - Jersey Boys - Beggin' – Jersey Boyz

They were not at all in unison, a boy band they are NOT! I did enjoy the solo bits with spins and kicks as well as the overall routine. Vincent stood out for me.

Top 4 Girls Dance
Burlesque in my opinion with Sean Cheeseman
“Dr. Feelgood” Aretha Franklin - Aretha Franklin: 30 Greatest Hits - Dr. Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business) – Aretha Franklin

This was sexy, hot and amazing. The girls were in sync, each had a chance to shine and the choreography was super seductive. Jayme Rae stood out *slightly* for me but overall the all shone like the superstars they are.

Couples

Vincent & Tara-Jean

1. Rumba with Eric Caty
“Hero” Enrique Iglesias - Escape - Hero – Enrique Iglesias

Maybe it’s the song but I teared up, I was covered in goosebumps and I enjoyed every moment of this amazing routine. The kiss at the end was hot and Mia Michaels was correct, the end bit was very Karma Sutra. I just loved it, Tara-Jean was sexy and Vincent was powerful and I adored every second of this routine.

2. Krump with Lil’ C
“Chea-Chea-Chea” – Tha J Squad

Neither hit it very hard but it was a good effort. Tara-Jean seems to me to be the weakest link of the 4 girls, though even saying that feels wrong because they are all so amazing. Vincent delivered though it was not overly “krumpy” for me.

Tara-Jean
“Farewell” Rosie Thomas - When We Were Small - Farewell – Rosie Thomas

Passionate, Emotional, Pretty. But not sure if her overall effort will get her to next week.

Vincent
“U Can’t Touch This” MC Hammer - MC Hammer: Greatest Hits - U Can't Touch This – MC Hammer

Unique song choice for his genre of dance but he delivered. It was hot, sexy and most importantly ENTERTAINING!

Kim & Cody

1. Hip Hop with Luther Brown
“Humpin’ Around” Bobby Brown - All the Number Ones - Humpin' Around – Bobby Brown

I loved this routine. Mia Michaels called it “dope” and I concur. It was hard, it was hyped, it was a throw back to old school hip hop and they nailed it. Both of them were in their genre and showed they could rock it out.

2. Smooth Waltz with Pierre Allaire
“What a Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong - Louis Armstrong's All-Time Greatest Hits - What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

This fell flat. It was cute and quirky, I was shocked to see Kim not being sexy… but it was not entertaining and as the judges pointed out it showed poor technique and didn’t deliver.

Kim
“Jerk it” Thunderheist - Thunderheist - Jerk It -Thunderhiest

Back to the sexy where she belongs this was an amazing routine. I especially loved the gliding across the floor on her back and the abrupt sudden movements… hot!

Cody
“Missin’ You” Trey Songz - Trey Day (Bonus Track Version) - Missin You – Tre Songz

The problem with Cody is that his hip hop is smooth and natural and looks to come so easy. I think that can be mistaken for lack of effort or passion. I believe he HAS the passion and drive and effort, but he is just so talented his solo’s appear relaxed. I hope this doesn’t land him in the bottom

Emanuel & Melanie

1. Contemporary (Ballet parts) with Sabrina Matthews
“The Scientist” Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head - The Scientist – Coldplay

What great lines. It was a beautiful routine though I felt the pairing was a bit off. The judges really emphasized how well Melanie did while playing hard ball with Emmanuel. He was injured, he did miss rehersals, he did fairly well all things considered, but also he is a fan favourite mainly because of his background with skating and his familiarity.

2. Disco with Melissa Williams
“Hush Hush” The Pussycat Dolls - Doll Domination - Hush Hush -Pussycat Dolls

I enjoyed the routine. I feel like Melanie has been in the bottom when she shouldn’t have been before and fear that will occur again. Emmanuel I feel has been in the top when he shouldn’t have been and wonder how Canada will vote this week given he was injured.

Melanie
“Innocence” Björk - Volta - Innocence – Bjork

I loved this solo. The song choice was so perfect for her movements. She really delivered passion and talent and showcased why she should stick around.

Emanuel
“Mad World” The Hitmakers - Big Smash Hits - Mad World (as made famous by Adam Lambert) – Adam Lambert

He always looks to glide on ice. I wanted to see more. I worried about his ankle. I feel it is tough to judge or rank someone who is injured. I don’ tknow if people will vote for him based on previous weeks and loving him already or even as sympathy for his injury or if he will finally go home. We shall see tomorrow.

Jayme Rae & Everett

1. Mamba with Gustavo Varagas
“En Berransvilla Me Quedo” Joe Arroyo - La Verdad de Joe Arroyo - En Barranquilla Me Quedo – Joe Arroyo

Jayme Rae’s hips were flying and she was sexy as hell even as her costume was falling apart. The kicks, spins, dips and that end flip… wow! Entertaining and amazing. Yes Jayme Rae outshone Everett but that is how it should be and Mia Michaels was correct – HOT A LICIOUS!

2. Jazz Funk with Nico Archambault & Wynn Holmes
“Sexy Chick” David Guetta - One Love - Sexy Chick (feat. Akon) – David Guetta (feat. Akon)

If Nico’s choreo can’t keep these two out of the bottom 2 I don’t know what can… Nico’s debut as a choreo on the show was AMAZING… I loved it as much as I love him !!! Everett was the perfect geek and Jayme Rae sexy as sexy can be. The story was cute, the moves were amazing it was a well-crafted routine from idea to performance….

Jayme Rae
“gettin’ in the Way” Jill Scott - Who Is Jill Scott? - Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 - Gettin' In the Way -Jill Scott

Every movement was precise and amazing. I think she should be safe based on her paired routines and solo. She has become quite the superstar.

Everett
“Stand By Me” Ben E. King - Ben E. King: Anthology - Stand by Me -Ben E King

This guy is entertaining. He makes tap fun again. I can’t keep my eyes off him when he moves and that is a good thing. I think he should be safe.

Power Rankings

Girls

1. Kim
2. Jayme Rae
3. Melanie
4. Tara-Jean

Boys

1. Vincent
2. Everett
3. Cody
4. Emanuel

I predict Tara-Jean and Emanuel go Home (Though I kind of sadly think it may be Cody and not Emanuel, I would probably cry if that was true though)

Do you agree? Disagree? Why?

We will see Tomorrow Night

So You Think You Can Dance Canada's Top 10 Results Show

And Then there were 8….

From this point on it will be even more difficult to say good-bye but at least we know they will all be on SYTYCDC Tour this winter

While my Power Rankings were not spot on – I did predict the most important part – – – who was going home

The opening dance routine by Stacey Tookey was pretty incredible and [maybe I am biased] but Melanie, Cody & Jayme Rae really stood out for me in the routine. The pairing was awesomely choreographed, though the group was not in sync and some were obviously stronger than others.

Leah Miller was annoying as ever though I enjoyed watching her fumble her words a bit and I could see that the hair in her eyes was annoying her but she was trying not to have to move it out of the way, thus blocking her face for a millisecond on screen.

Blake McGrath, who I adore, was there again and I have to say, as much as I love his bod – I do not dig the open shirt…. it’s a bit sloppy looking…

Leah’s introduction of Jean-Marc as the French Canadian Fabio made me literally laugh out loud!

Anyways, enough with my rants… here is what happened.

Girls

Amy – not safe (as I predicted)
Kim – safe
Tara-Jean – safe
Melanie – not safe (I disagree!)
Jayme Rae safe

Boys

Everett – safe (good!)
Cody – not safe (shocked me a bit)
Vincent – safe
Austin – not safe (as I predicted)
Emanuel – safe (Canada loves him!)

Solo’s

Amy- was fine but I knew she would be going home.

Melanie- was [if its possible] even more passionate and gave me goosebumps!

Cody- was more of a jazzy hip hop that i really enjoyed. The kid has charisma!

Austin – was amazing! I sensed he’d go home after being in the bottom before, I really think he cockiness in auditions gave him a bad rep early and he just couldn’t get in the votes, but he was AMAZING! I loved that he changed it up and tried something new. It wasn’t so floaty free, airy fairy… it was hard and fun and it was a great send-off.

Good-Bye

Amy & Austin went home, as I predicted

So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 12 Results Show

And now we are down to Top 10. The ten that will go on tour and perform across the country. I am happy with the Top 10 for the most part, heck I’d go see the Top 20 pretty much…. there were so many great dancers this season.

They opened with a very sexy piece from Luther Brown to Lil Kim’s “The Jumpoff”. I loved the leather cat suits the women wore and the body art on the men. Kim was featured again front and center, I didn’t care for her or think of her as a front runner but she is really becoming quite the sexy vixen of a front runner. The routine was hot and had lot’s of hip shaking, spanking and allure.

Results

Kim & Emanuel – Safe (as predicted)

Melanie & Cody – Not Safe (NOT as predicted – SHOCKED!)

Corynne & Austin – Not Safe (as predicted)

Tara-Jean & Everett – Safe (NOT as predicted)

Jayme Rae & Daniel – Not Safe (NOT as predicted)

Amy & Vincent – Safe (NOT as predicted)

Solo’s

Melanie – Passionate, beautiful, predicted she’d make it on to Top 10 and am still shocked she was even in Bottom 3 Couples.

Corynne – Seemed a bit frantic, predicted she would be leaving even last night.

Jayme Rae – Her movement and lines looked great, I predicted she’d make it to Top 10.

Cody – a fan fave, had to make it to Top 10 though his solo didn’t seem as strong as I have seen him in the past.

Austin – he excels in his solo, so beautiful and passionate

Daniel – hard-hitting and very entertaining

Good-Byes

Corynne & Daniel went home. I predicted Corynne would go home but had thought Austin would also leave, however, he always pulls out an amazing solo and stays, despite being in the Bottom 3 three times now.

Now we are in the Top 10 – It will be exciting to see what these amazing dancers bring… who are you all rooting for to win now?

Power Rankings – So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 14

Last Week’s Power Rankings I predicted 1/3 of the Bottom 3 and one of the two going home.

This week I hope to be more accurate (Hey, the previous week I was 3/3)

Our judges this evening were Dan Karaty, Karen Kain, Tre Armstrong and Jean-Marc Genereux. Dan spoke about how SYTYCD Canada pushes the envelop and keeps getting sexier. Tomorrow Night Blake’s choreographed an “almost too sexy for tv” routine that I can’t wait to see.

1.Cody & Melanie
Hip Hop with Luther
“Turnin’ me on” Keri Hilson & Lil Wayne - In a Perfect World... (Bonus Track Version) - Turnin Me On – Keri Hilson ft. Lil Wayne

Yes, they are my favourite couple (though Jayme Rae & Daniel are creeping up a close second lately) but this routine by Luther was HOT! Cody didn’t have what I refer to as “Evan syndrome” (being too cute and innocent) he rocked it hard along with Melanie who was hard-hitting. They were convincing, they were in unison and they were sexy. Best routine of the night in my opinion.

2. Jayme Rae & Daniel
Disco with Melissa Williams
“Disco Inferno” The Trammps - Sensational 70s - Disco Inferno -The Trammps

The lifts, the spins, the flips, the bounce, the outfits… it was hot. I don’t know what the heck Dan Karaty was watching but he was not watching these guys dance if he thinks they weren’t “there” When Jayme Rae did those splits in a lift then a spin and flip – holy guacamole – amazing! Disco is face-paced and fun and these guys did a fantastic job and entertained me.

3. Austin & Corynne
Hollywood Jazz with John Byrne
“Paparazzi” Lady GaGa - The Fame - Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

I haven’t liked Austin since auditions but that guy can dance. I have liked Corynne since auditions and I am really glad these two are paired, they seem to really connect and I think they will stay out of the bottom 3 again this week. I didn’t like the gun part, it seemed corny but the falls and jumps and that KISS!?! wow!

4. Natalie & Danny
West Coast Swing with Benji Schwimmer
“Love Lock Down” Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak (Bonus Video Version) - Love Lockdown – Kanye West

I have tried West Coast Swing and this to me was so unlike what I have tried (at a novice level obviously ha ha!) Benji is a genius. There were some amazing flips and complicated patterns but the air worked well together and performed beautifully. (Although I wasn’t a fan of the song – especially after kanye’s lil’ outburst at the VMA’s this past weekend!)

———————BOTTOM 3————————-

5. Tara-Jean & Everett
House with Sho Tyme
“When Love Takes Over” David Guetta - When Love Takes Over (feat. Kelly Rowland) - Single - When Love Takes Over (feat. Kelly Rowland) – David Guette

I don’t want to put these guys in the Bottom 3 but it’s a close call with Natalie & Danny / Tara-Jean & Everett. It was very fast, it was entertaining, it truly was body versus feet as Dan Karaty said. I enjoyed it but something about Benji’s routine made it stand out slightly above this one and so here we are with our Bottom 3 predictions.

6. Kim & Emanuel
Contemporary with Stacey Tookey
“To Build a Home” The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur - To Build a Home – Cinematic Orchestra
They seem defeated in the rehearsal clips. With bruises and injuries and struggling with the lifts. It felt like a real bummer just watching. Though they performed well, their outfits were boring, it was slow and seemed to just drag on for me. Near the end it pick ed up and they gave it some life but I just felt like it fell short.

7. Amy & Vincent
Cha Cha with Gustavo Vargas
“Rie y llora” Celia Cruz - Regalo del Alma - Rie y Llora – Celia Cruz

It was fun and sexy and cute but it didn’t stand out much compared to other routines this evening. it was quirky but just nothing spectacular in my opinion.

Assuming my Bottom 3 are correct (and it is so hard to tell at this point) I would predict that Amy & Vincent go home… ooh I dunno…. everyone deserve to be where they are on that stage… so sad to send people home each week.

Can’t wait for Blake’s routine tomorrow 🙂

Power Rankings – So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 16

Last Week’s Power Rankings were fairly accurate. I called the bottom 3. It is hard to predict exactly who will go home until you see their solo’s, however, as we get to know each dancer I think we can also guess how their solo’s will be.

So this week for the So you think you can dance canada top 16 I will do my power rankings and see if I can get it right.

I am not a dancing expert but I enjoy watching and will base my Power Rankings on what I saw, heard and felt about each couple’s routine.

1. Jayme Rae & Daniel
Hip Hop with Luther
“Pucker Up” Ciara - Fantasy Ride (Deluxe Version) - Pucker Up – Ciara

This was my favourite routine of the night. Luther’s choreo to the song, combined with Jayme Rae and Daniel’s performance… it was just awesome for me. Amazing dancing, creative floor work, sexy moves and I had goosebumps. What more does it take to stay on top?

2. Amy & Vincent
Hip Hop with Flii Stylez
“Boom Boom Pow” Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) - Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas

Maybe I just favour hip hop and urban dance but this routine rocked it. I thought he hit harder than she did but together they entertained me.

3. Corynne & Austin
Contemporary with Stacey Tookey
“Never Say Never” The Fray - The Fray - Never Say Never – The Fray

I am not usually an Austin fan, though I do like Corynne, but this routine was great. It was pretty and it gave me goosebumps. Stacey Tookey is amazing, Corynne and Austin danced it wonderfully and even though I am not an Austin fan, I have to say he had me tonight.

4. Kim & Emanuel
Jazz Funk with Blake McGrath
“Love, Sex, Magic” Ciara - Fantasy Ride (Deluxe Version) - Love Sex Magic (feat. Justin Timberlake) – Justin Timberlake/Ciara

This was hot, sexy, cool. Blake is a god. I felt they danced it a little slow and would hav elike dto see it a little harder but the licking, biting, stripping was all sexy. Usually I’d put Blake’s routines higher, but I felt Emanuel and Kim could have done better, not that they did badly, I jsut prefered a few other routines.

5. Melanie & Cody
Mambo with Gustavo Vargas
“Suena Ahora” Michi Sarmiento - Salsa Latin Party, Vol. 1 - Suena Ahora – Michi Sarmiento

I love Melanie and Cody. I’d always put them in my Top 3…. but this week I was disappointed with the routine. Maybe because it’s a style I am less familiar with, but it felt a little bit confusing and while it was cute and fun, it seemed too laid back to me.

——————- BOTTOM 3 PREDICTIONS ——————-

6. Tara-Jean & Everett
Quick Step with Pierre Allaire
Chicago Overture” Various Artists - Chicago - The Musical - Overture – Hotrolls Ragtime Band

I hate to put TJ and Everett in Bottom 3 because I am a huge fan of them both, but it just didn’t do it for me tonight. It felt Cheesey and though I enjoyed the lifts and flips and spins, I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I wanted to. I predict they will make bottom 3 but will move on after amazing solo’s (I hope!)

7. Nicholas & Jenna Lynn
Hustle with Benji Schwimmer
“Canned Heat” Jamiroquai - Center Stage - Canned Heat – Jamiroquai

I love Benji and I was so glad to see him choreo. Loved his difficult moves and high energy. I also love the song and the energy it emotes but …. I don’t think they will get the votes to stay out of the Bottom 3 again. We will see. If I am right and they are Bottom 3 I think Jenna will go home. She does great passionate solo’s but how many times can you do a solo before it just gets old?

8. Natalie & Danny
Rhumba with Gustavo Vargas
“Historia de un amor” Pérez Prado - Il Vero, Unico, Grande Perez Prado - Historia de un Amor – Perez Prado

This routine fell short for me. I know it isn’t the style they know and I realize it was not danced badly, but it’s Top 16 and even if everyone was great they’d still have to cut someone. I think these two will make Bottom 3 and perhaps Danny will go home due ot his “lack of confidence”

I have no clue at this point… but those are my predictions and Power Rankings. If my Bottom 3 are right I would predict Jenna Lynn and Danny going home – but I could be way off even on my Bottom 3 Couples…

What do you think?

So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 18 Results Show

Leah Miller opened the show stating over one million votes came in…. Is it just me or does it look like Leah has had some botox? I noticed this last week – her face seemed… tightly pulled…. and it’s not just because I don’t like her….

We had a great Top 18 Bollywood routine choreographed by Longinus Fernandes. It was colourful and hard hitting. I felt the women out performed the men overall, just a general observation.

Results

Natalie & Danny (who I placed 6th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie M & Cody (who I placed 2nd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Amy & Vincent (who I placed 1st in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Anthony & Corynne (who I placed 8th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Nicholas & Jenna (who I placed 7th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

Tara-Jean & Everett (who I placed 5th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Kim & Emanuel (who I placed 3rd in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Jayme Rae & Daniel (who I placed 4th in my Power Rankings) were safe.

Melanie B & Austin (who I placed 9th and as Bottom 3) were NOT safe.

So I predicted 3/3 of the Bottom 3 couples (Not Bad for my first Power Ranking Post!)

Solo’s

Anthony – lot’s of hips and shaking

Nicholas – lot’s of tricks and high energy

Austin – solid performer if only I felt his attitude was as great as his dancing

Corynne – simple but pretty dance

Jenna Lynn – lot’s of kicks and power

Melanie B – passionate

Good – Bye

Anthony & Melanie B went home.

Overall

Good Results Show – Loved the Bollywood – Wasn’t surprised with the results.

Power Rankings – So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Top 18

I always get nervous doing these power rankings, especially so early on when we haven’t seen enough of the dancers to really predict or forecast… however, I enjoy watching and will base my Power Rankings on what I saw, heard and felt about each couple’s routine.

1. Amy & Vincent
Contemporary with Blake McGrath
“When You Say My Name” – Mario Spinetti

I had goosebumps. Yes, I think Blake is a God. Yes, I am biased because of that. It was dark but this routine was beautifully choreographed and beautifully danced and it was memorable. People will vote for this!!! It was my favourite tonight!!!

2. Melanie M & Cody
Crump with Lil C
“Buck N Roll” – Tha J Squad

I love that Melanie is so versatile and even though I think Cody has the “Evan Syndrome” (Of being too cute to be “nasty” or “crump”) the two of them worked well together and they are both favourites of mine so I am thrilled they are paired together. They are likable and they rocked it so not only are they not bottom 3 I think they would be top 3 if they announced those results!

3. Emanuel & Kim
Theatre with Sean Cheeseman
“Maybe This Time” – Connie Fisher

I think Theatre can get too “Cheesey” with “Cheeseman” (heh heh!) but this was well done and the facial expressions and emotion was perfectly done. Emanuel (as someone noted in a previous comment) is very well-known in Canada for his figure skating, so I think people will continue to vote for him as he already has a huge fan-base.

4. Jayme & Daniel
Dance Hall with JaeBlaze
“So Fine” – Sean Paul

I don’t know this “Dance Hall” style, the choreo *seemed* simple (or maybe they just mastered it) but it was entertaining and I think people will vote for things that entertain them, especially when they aren’t dance instructors or specialists, bottom line is entertaining or not.. this was.

5. Tara-Jean & Everett
Salsa with Tony Meredith & Melanie LePatin
“Ana Pa’ Mi Tambor” – La Excelencia

I thought there were some awkward transitions but overall it was sexy and hot. She’s a looker and he is pretty adorable also. The routine was good enough to get calls I hope.

6. Danny & Natalie
Jazz with Melissa Williams
“Please Don’t Leave Me” – Pink

The boy underwear was distracting and awkward but the dancing was good. I am a huge fan of Natalie but tonight I felt she was a bit frantic, though her “character” was supposed to be a bit crazed… It was an average routine, with the exception of the spins which I loved.

——————- BOTTOM 3 PREDICTIONS ——————-

7. Nicholas & Jenna
Hip Hop with Show Tyme
“Blast Off” – P. Diddy & Fam

It wasn’t as hard-hitting as it could have been and though I agree he did a better job than she did, I think the judges were too rough on Jenna. This could bring in some sympathy votes on her behalf, but mostly I think it was an average performance with a mismatched couple who will be in the bottom 3.

8. Anthony & Corynne
Paso Doble with Tony & Melanie
“Fuego” – Bond

This seemed like difficult choreo and style for week 2. There was the fall, and though I don’t think it phased them enough to be a strike against them necessarily, I also don’t find Paso Doble very exciting typically… I have seen some very powerful routines that I enjoyed but this one was just average for me personally, not enough to make me want to vote sadly, I really do like Corynne (and her giggles)

9. Austin & Melanie B
Smooth Waltz with Danny Quillman
“Nights in White Satin” – Il Divo

I am not a ballroom expert, so when it comes to these routines I usually watch the feet unless something else is exceptionally interesting to captivate my attention. This routine didn’t have anything to captivate me and while watching their feet I noticed a lot of off-beat steps and awkward footing. It was pretty, but not entertaining for me. Add that they are a new couple because of being bottom 3 last week… I predict they will find themselves there once more this week. I am a bit biased, I don’t really like Austin, I mean he seems like a great dancer (his solo last week was fantastic) but his personality rubs me the wrong way ever since the group routines during audition finales… meh!

Feel free to comment what do you think?
