SYTYCD: New Season Wish

So after all this talk of what we could like to see in next season’s So You Think You Can Dance… Nigel pulls a comment that Alex would be invited back to the show next season… which begs the question HOW?

Alex has already competed, he’s been part of the show for a few weeks, undoubtedly he’s one of the more popular dancers that actually has been stepping up to the plate. Had it not been for his injury he would most likely move further into the competition… But the problem is that technically in accordance to rules of the past seasons, once a dancer has competed they would not be eligible to try out for the show again.

But that brought about the possibility of bringing Alex back as an All Star (as suggested by ahs). Which would make sense, considering that he is a favorite, but the problem is that we haven’t seen him really stretch to his full potential. And if he comes back as an All Star he would be pigeon-holed, in a way, into ballet and other types of styles that he’s best at rather than spreading his wings and growing.

So why not take that a step further? To let Alex compete as an All Star by having a season where all the dancers are “All Stars” and they compete against one another to prove their growth to the judges and America. After all Nigel mentioned that Comfort has grown. Mia has mentioned that Allison has grown leaps and bounds as a dancer since her time on SYTYCD. Obviously Travis has also grown as a dancer (to become a well received choreographer).

So how about it? Next Season have all twenty dancers be past competitors from the first six seasons. Have them prove that they have grown as dancers in a similar or variation of the current format. This way Alex Wong can come back as an All Star AND be able to compete as he goes against the best of the best.

While we are at it, some of the our favorite dancers that didn’t get their chance to be part of the top twenty/ten could participate too (I’m looking at you Ryan Kasprzak). But instead of making this your traditional summer show, it could be a shortened fall season. So instead of twenty dancers squeeze it down to ten and use the new format of eliminating one per week…

I believe this solution would work out best while keeping in with rules of the competition without making a point of bending/breaking them. They already bent them for Billy Bell when he was on the Showcase episode but got sick before he had a chance to compete, and again for Brandon Dumlao who competed for one show but was immediately let go.

Because I don’t know about you guys, but for me, the more they don’t adhere to their own set rules and continue to bend and break them based on favoritism the less respect I feel for them as a whole… and if I’m losing respect for them, then so is a good portion of the viewing audience, which would turn into a ratings drop and then the show that we all once loved would be dropped from the lineup.

But that’s just me.

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

Ryan Kasprzak in Chicago’s Billy Elliot

Thanks Marianya, for tipping us about this news. Ryan Kasprzak is in the ensemble of Chicago’s Billy Elliot.

He’s Tweeted a few pictures, too: – Hey Chicago, get some @billyelliot in your life. 1st preview starts tonight 9:21 PM Mar 18th via TwitPic×2 – Final dress. It’s really happening. Break a leg @billyelliot Chicago. Gotta love a good gypsy run. 9:28 PM Mar 17th via TwitPic

If you’re in Chicago, check out the show and tell us all about it!

And of course, some of us are still hoping that Ryan’s brother Evan (aka, Season 5 Top 4) will be one of Season 7’s All-Stars, so the Kasprzak brothers are doing just fine for themselves.

[4.11.10 Ryan just posted a link to this article on Twitter. Check out all the pics and see if you can find Ryan in a few.]

*Update on Ryan Kasprzak*

WOW! what a great Top 10 show last night!

As I’ve posted on our site before, I’m a HUGE Broadway geek (thus the reason I practically had a heart attack the first time I heard Spencer Liff was going to be choreographing this season, haha). Anyway, coming up next week is the Annual “Gypsy of the Year” competition for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows in New York City. I’ve attached the press release because it looks like the opening number for the show is going to include an appearance from none other than Ryan Kasprzak! Congratulations to him for booking such a great gig.

Ryan Kasprzak at Gypsy of the Year

check out this great cause, and look into getting tickets, anyone in the NY metro area who reads our site, we’d love to hear how it goes!

I’ll peruse YouTube for clips late next week, there usually are a handful and they’re very funny!
Here’s Daniel Radcliffe with the cast of Equus at last year’s competition (Spencer is one of the horses, can anyone figure out which one he is?!)

Channing Cooke & Phillip Attmore Top 20 SYTYCD Interview

The “ice cream scooper” and “Ryan’s Fosse roommate” are both pretty chill in this interview. Phillip has something interesting to say about not making it previously and Channing is pretty funny. There’s a lot of Paula van Oppen in the background of the Vegas week clips. And catch what’s happening in the background while Channing and Phillip are talking. Peter and Kathryn (?) are doing photos and she’s throwing her leg over his shoulder. Lol.

Must Watch New Brother Blog, Kasprzaktivists

Thank goodness I follow Ryan Kasprzak on Twitter, so that I could be the 79th person to view the newest Brother Blog, which is really funny and awesome – especially the rapping (Really. Would I kid you?) If you are a new Kasprzaktivist, John had a post a while back with a menu of all the Kasprzak Brother Blogs up to that point.

Here’s the latest Kasprzak Brother Blog:

You can always declare your Kasprzaktivism with a “Kasprzaktivist” t-shirt from the Pure SYTYCD store. [And yes, I did challenge myself to see how many different times I could drop the K-bomb in this one post.]

Kasprzaktivist – Evan Kasprzak

For those of you that are fans of Evan Kasprzak (which there are a lot of you), then you probably already know about being a Kasprzaktivist. This is a name that was introduced by Evan’s brother Ryan in what Ryan’s calling his Brother Blog. The first episode he even had “The Other Brother” make an appearance (I’m a little biased to The Other Brother since he’s a computer nerd like me).

Well, Ryan is pretty entertaining in most of these Brother Blog videos. A little bit too much begging for votes for me, but it’s all good. I love how Ryan’s doing a great job supporting his brother and I actually think this should pay off well for Ryan once he makes the SYTYCD top 20 on season 6 of SYTYCD.

In case you missed them, here’s a playlist of all the Kasprzaktivist videos to date:

My favorite part was when someone changed their middle name on Facebook to Kasprzak. As a side note, I’m sending an email to Ryan to see about doing a video interview for this blog. Let’s hope he accepts.

Random Thoughts on the SYTYCD 18 Elimination Show

I must admit that I always get in a little bit of a funk the day after the So You Think You Can Dance elimination shows. I get so involved in the comments from my SYTYCD power rankings, on my twitter account and of course in the SYTYCD music, that the day after I usually just need a little break. So, in the future if you see me kind of disappear, then now you know why. I just need to bring on a second person to help me post to this blog. Any takers?

Now on to my random thoughts…

Bottom 3 Couples – Anyone that says they knew that those 3 couples would be in the bottom 3 is smokin something fierce. What a shocker. I bet Nigel and the show are loving that. Seriously though, when have they ever had 3 different couples from the week before. It hasn’t and that’s what’s so amazing. Most shocking of all was that Asuka and Vitolio weren’t in the bottom 3 and Kayla and Max were in the bottom 3. This actually might turn out to be a really good thing for Kayla, because now her fans will kind of wake up and start voting for her more. Maybe they just got a little bit complacent in the past since she did dance so well.

Solos – I don’t know why, but I’m still not such a big fan of the solos. I think people like Hok and Dominique from past seasons kind of spoiled us with great solos. The solos have been rather lack luster for me. I’m not sure I can really remember one amazing moment from any of the solos. I guess Phillip just needs to be in the bottom 3 to rectify it.

Max Gone – I think it’s unfortunate that Max got sent home. He worked so hard and really laid it all out on the line. That should be rewarded. Unfortunately, I’m afraid his look was the reason he got sent home. That just doesn’t feel right. I think maybe the judges should just be removed from this part of the equation altogether.

Ashley Gone – This was not really a surprise for me. However, I was honestly sad she’s gone. There’s something about her that makes her not as likable and I get that. However, Ashley really found a soft spot in my heart when I think of how many times and how hard she tried to be on the show. I would have liked to see her a couple more weeks. That said, I want to see Kayla and Caitlin more.

Shameful Lip Sync – Seriously, could that singer (Kristinia DeBarge) have looked any more like she was lip syncing? It was dreadful to even watch. The dancers were better than Sean Kingston’s dancers, but the lip syncing has got to go.

Amrapali Ambegaokar – I preferred the Indian dancing she did on Superstars of Dance more than her performance on SYTYCD. However, there’s absolutely no arguing that she has amazing talent. I can’t imagine how much practice it must take to do what she did. I wonder what Nakul Dev Mahajan thought of it.

Quick Hits:
-Mia’s been hanging with Wade Robson or Brian Friedman I think.
-The Lil C sequence was awesome
-Cat Deeley looked awesome in that suit. Much better than the previous red sheet.
-Kayla’s face was priceless when she was in the bottom 3
-Nice SYTYCD 6 promotion using Ryan Kasprzak
-Wednesday SYTYCD starts to get some competition with America’s Got Talent. Don’t they know they shouldn’t overlap my shows?!?!

Potential So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 Dancers

I just created a list of forgotten dancers on So You Think You Can Dance season 5. Now take a look at the list of other people who we saw a lot, but I hope will still come back on So You Think You Can Dance Season 6.

Ryan Kasprzak – I don’t think I have to explain myself here. His brother made it and he didn’t for the lamest reason Nigel has ever given. I’m not a huge fan myself, but I think it would fulfill a dream for him and I’m all for people living their dreams.

Megan Kinney – We didn’t get to know her as much as Caitlin. Probably because Caitlin was in the top 20 and she wasn’t. I don’t like her as much as Caitlin, but she’s still a nice dancer and I’d love to see her back.

Erik “Silky” Moore – I was really surprised when Erik was sent home. Check out these videos of Erik “Silky” Moore and you’ll see why I was surprised. He has some real versatility and personality and I think the show will miss a personality like Erik. Maybe next season.

Gabi Rojas – I don’t really need to explain this one. Everyone that’s watched her knows she has some unique choreography that was interesting. Can you imagine her solos?

Nobuya Nagahama – I loved this guys passion for dancing. I’m sure he wasn’t the most refined dancer, but he kind of reminded me of Hok who was good at his style, but just loved stretching himself to do other dances. Looking forward to seeing him come back and perform again.

Natalie Reid – I think that some people don’t want to see her come back, but she was so passionate last year about coming back that I hope she does it again. I like seeing people like her beat the odds or at least try. Luckily she doesn’t have to wait a whole year to try.

Sex – Oh wait No!!

So You Think You Can Dance Top 20 Rants

It’s now all official and we know who will be in the So You Think You Can Dance 2009 top 20. All over the web people are twittering about who they like, blogging about it, and commenting on blogs like mine. So, I might as well take a minute to write down a few of my rants (both good and bad) about the So You Think You Can Dance top 20.

Brandon Bryant – A lot of people are up in arms about Mia Michael’s comments to Brandon Bryant. Now you may remember that I said that Mia Michaels was a mean judge, but this time I’m actually backing Mia. Ok, she was a little over the top in her criticism but I think she was right. There’s something missing in Brandon’s performance in Las Vegas that’s not quite there.

Maybe it’s like his friend Natalie Reid who said that she couldn’t live up to her expectations. Brandon definitely can’t live up to the expectations of a crying Mary Murphy. However, for me I’m not sure it’s all about living up to expectations. I just think with certain styles of dance he’s going to have troubles and not blows us away like he did in his audition. Plus, he is a little bit arrogant in his ways. He’s not like Danny Tidwell arrogant, but just a touch of that maybe. Luckily unlike Danny Tidwell, when Brandon Bryant talks the arrogance doesn’t seem to come out. That’s a really good thing for him.

I also love the conspiracy theory someone suggested in the comments that maybe Mia Michaels was trying to avoid the Will Wingfield issue of being considered a judges favorite and having that hurt your chances with the vote. I don’t think Mia did that on purpose, but I definitely believe that Brandon Bryant will benefit from his fans voting extra for him thanks to Mia.

Ashley Valero – Can you say 4 times? That’s a lot of tryouts. I couldn’t be happier for her. Looking forward to see more of her dancing.

Alex Wong – Second to most heart breaking moment of the night. Whether you liked Alex Wong’s dancing or not you had to appreciate his desire to dance. It’s unfortunate that he wasn’t able to get out of his contract. I’m not calling for a boycott of his ballet company, but man it’s sad he went to all that work and now has to go home to only do ballet.

Kasprzak Brothers – Most heartbreaking moment of the night. I’m sure Fox wants ratings, but this was just cruel. “Worst nightmare” was an apt description. I also really hated that Nigel said they always thought they could only let one person with their style into this year’s top 20. That’s crap to me. You put in the best dancers. If they’re all contemporary then so be it. I hate to hear stuff like this.

I’ll admit that I ended up watching this episode twice already and as I sat back and just enjoyed it the second time, I was really excited to see so many of the dancers in the top 20. I don’t think this season is going to be the best one ever, but I also don’t think it will disappoint either. Plus, Wade Robson and Shane Sparks are BACKKKKK!!!! (in case you missed that news)
