Top 10 Power Rankings

Bollywood is always a fun way to start off a show. Of course I noticed we were missing a guy, took me a minute to figure out that Tucker was missing. Cat revealed that due to an infection in his knee that he will not be performing his duet. Also, that he will be in the bottom two automatically. This week Alan, Tucker, Nico, Jenna, Malece, and Amy were in the bottom six. I didn’t think that they would have saved Jenna, but they must see something in her that I’m missing by not being at a live show. Anyways, I pretty much knew who they were going to save and who was going home. Malece and Alan were the unlucky two that were cut tonight, and I hope Nigel will make sure they will be on the tour. I will include their dance in my rankings.

Top 3: These three received standing ovations from the judges.

Makensie & Paul: Mandy created another memorable piece, just without the insane lift (ex. Melanie & Neil Total Eclipse of the Heart). However it wasn’t really needed. They have a great chemistry with each other and you can almost feel the emotion through the TV. Just an overall a beautiful dance to a Lady GaGa song (I like to think GaGa might have thrown a shoe up on the stage).

Jasmine & Aaron: This was a classic gritty NappyTabs hip hop. I really don’t know what else to say other that Jasmine did nail the routine and so did Aaron. Plus I’m just happy for the possibility of Aaron being able to do a tap number now that the all-stars are available.

Hayley & Nico: I have to agree this was one of the best Broadway numbers we have seen in a while. They both did what Sean wanted them too and threw themselves into the characters of the dance. This for me was the best both have done all season. That one lift with the leg was just wow.

Middle Two

Jenna & Alex/Tucker: I love Alex filling in for Tucker, didn’t realize he didn’t get to do ballroom his season. Loved the pirate theme, and Jenna in her element and truthfully I understood why they saved her last night.

Amy & FikShun: The beauty of this dance for me I just don’t notice if the technique is there and I really don’t care either. It seemed that the judges felt the same way. FikShun grew in this dance and I was so proud of him, he did a great job. Amy was great too.

Bottom Cut Dancers

Malece & Alan: I’m not sure if these two were old enough to truly get the vision that Mandy wanted. It’s a dance I would have loved to seen Aaron and Jasmine do.

Group dances: I love both the guys and girls. I think I like the guys hip hop a little  bit more.

Bottom 4: Tucker, FikShun, Jenna, and Amy going solely on how I ranked the dances but Tucker is the only one I know for sure. Now bring on the All Stars.

Top 20 Power Rankings

I really want to start off by saying how amazing that opening routine was last night. I loved seeing the dancers, choreographers, and judges tell us a story through dance. Nappy Tabs quite possibly created one of my favorite dances of the season…well I’m sure one of many.

Now on to the tough part, keep in mind this is subjective and just my thoughts on the night. I always find it hard to rank the not so good dances especially when I feel like there really weren’t any total train wrecks. So glad I don’t have the judges job this week cause I really have no idea who will be in trouble next week.

Top 3

Amy & Fik-Shun

This was the dance of the night. Sonya created another beautiful contemporary dance. I knew Amy wouldn’t have any trouble with this dance but I was worried about Fik-Shun. Needless to say I think he probably made us all think twice about him. I can’t wait to see what is in store for them next week.

Jasmine H & Aaron

Another power couple according to the judges, and well I agree. Sonya can be hit or miss for me and truthfully I am on the fence about the dance itself but Jasmine and Aaron made the dance great for me. I don’t see them going anywhere soon.

Brittany & BluPrint

This was another pleasant surprise for me tonight. Just judging from the rehearsal footage I was a bit worried that this could’ve been a train wreck. Thankfully it was not, I thought both of them pulled this off well and was the only dance to technically to make the Hot Tamale Train. BluPrint does pick up the choreography well but I still feel like he could still tap into the emotion side of the dances. Over all I’m looking forward to seeing these two grow. Total side note Cat and Wayne had me laughing and I was impressed to hear Wayne mention a Season one dancer.

The Rest (I just couldn’t bring myself to make a bottom 2 or 3 list.)

Malece & Jade

This was the first dance of the night that really made sit up and get excited about the show. To hear the judges say that the actual performance turned out much better that the dress run, really makes me want to see the dress run just to see the difference. I’m happy to see Jade prove himself as a partner and being there for Malece. He still needs some refining as Wayne mentioned but I don’t think he has to worry about going home first.

Makensie & Paul

I love the Viennese waltz it’s always just mesmerizing to me. I was surprised to here that Paul is strictly a Latin ballroom dancer but he and Makensie pulled it off and made it look effortless.

Jasmine M. & Alan

When Travis pulled out the blindfolds, I’ll admit I thought he was a little bit nuts with it being the first week of the partners. Of course he proved me wrong, and it seemed to strengthen them as partners. While the dance was absolutely beautiful it was lacking something for me and I’m not quite sure what was missing. I feel that Jasmine is the stronger of the two in this dance.

Hayley & Curtis, Alexis & Nico

Both of these couples had a Chris Scott hip hop dance. I equally loved both of them but the judges seemed to like Hayley and Curtis a little bit better. The only thing that I can think of that Alexis and Nico could work on is the attitude of the dance. Overall I truly enjoyed both dances.

Jenna & Tucker

Oh boy I do love these two paired together but the routine just didn’t work for me. I thought Tucker stood out more for me than Jenna. This is one of those times I really want to love the dance but I just can’t.

Mariah & Carlos

This is when being the first ones to perform did not help them. While the both performed the Jive well…the just seem not quite up to what the dance required. I love these two and hated that it seemed they were given more than what they could handle. It was the technique that was lacking and honestly Wayne summed up what I thought about this Jive.

Okay so what Girls and Guys might be in trouble next week…I really have no clue but here is what I’m thinking. I’m just going with my gut on this part.

Girls: Jenna, Mariah, and Alexis

Boys: Carlos, Alan, and Nico

So who do you think will be the first to leave the competition.

SYTYCD Top Twenty perform for the First Time

SYTYCD Top Twenty
I am so excited for this season. I’m not sure who’s going to win but I’m rooting for Malece and Jade. The opening dance was so amazing! I loved the look at behind the scenes as well as the choreographer’s cameos. The hallway scene was my favorite. Side note: NAPPYTABS BABY! And I’m excited to see Wayne be a judge again. I’ll be touching base on what I think are the best and worst routines of the night.

Travis Wall “Love is Blind”
I love Jasmine M so very much. Her hair is amazing. Travis is very clever. This could have been really bad. I’m very impressed with how well they danced together without seeing. Do you really think they couldn’t see though? That’s a huge risk to have blind dancers. Their partnering was so beautiful. Her legs are just so beautiful. They really had the emotion of being in love. I really loved it.

Travis Wall “Silver screen”
Malece and Jade is a stellar combination. I love how elegant and smooth she can be and still so powerful against Jade. Travis did such a good job blending both their styles together. Such a great, great piece.

Sean Cheeseman Afro jazz
Animator + Ballroom + Afro jazz? Say what? I was really scared about this one to be honest. It had me mesmerized. I like that there was some isolations thrown in there for BluPrint. It was so powerful and joyful at the same time.

Sonya Tayeh “Bottom of the River”
I love Sonya. She’s my favorite choreographer of all time. Jasmine H and Aaron are power houses alone. Together they are beastly. I almost feel bad for the other couples. She is all leg and he is all muscle. Her turns seemed a bit off to me. The whole piece was very Sonya and I loved all of it.

Final Thoughts
I think the hip hop groups are in trouble as well as the jive. Jasmine H and Aaron and Malece and Jade are the couples to beat. It started as a very good season and I am excited to see how it progresses. I will not be happy when any of them leave.

Flashback: SYTYCD Canada (and U.S.) Season 2 – Tara-Jean & Everett

Typically, I don’t have time to watch So You Think You Can Dance Canada where the primary judges were: Jean-Marc Généreux and Tré Armstrong. So once in a while a friend of mine would send me a video of another routine from another part of the world that would pique my interest some and then that was all.

So when a friend (and fellow PureSYTYCD blogger) of mine posted a video on my Facebook Timeline I wasn’t entirely too anxious to want to go and see it right away, instead I waited til I had a little bit of time before I decided to look at it.

She sent the video with the following comment:

It’s been so long since we had a really good memorable Broadway number (maybe neil & kent baseball from season 7 or robert & kathryn west side story, but I don’t have any memorable ones from last year!), I’d love to see more numbers with this kind of energy!!

Another friend commented:

I miss the old stage. And as long as Tyce is not directing, I tend to like the broadway, but not love.

So, upon reading the comments I decided to watch the video, and boy… my friend was right… it has been a long time since I have seen a Broadway routine with this much energy.

The theatre routine in question was choreographed by Sean Cheesman who just in the first two weeks of competition for SYTYCD Season 9 choreographed two routines that for some reasons the audience may not have connected well to from the get go. Now that’s interesting… Anyway when I say a “long time” I definitely mean a long time… like Season 2’s Benji Schwimmer and Donyelle Jones:

Ironically both were the second seasons of their respective series and both involve “power couples”. So that got me thinking, I already created a Dance Style Breakdown for SYTYCD U.S. edition, so how did the dancers breakdown of dance style fare in Canada? So I decided to take a look… Below is a quick dance style breakdown over the course of the four seasons that the show was on the air:

DANCE STYLE MALE FEMALE
Contemporary 20 24
Hip Hop 9 5
Ballroom / Latin / Salsa 8 8
Ballet 2 2
Tap 1 0
Jazz 1 2
Break Dancing 1 0
Krump 0 1

Granted, this is still a bit lopsided with Contemporary dancers building the bulk of the group… however, when looking at the individual seasons, two of them (Season 2 and 4) were rather decently balanced. While the other two seasons had an insane number of Contemporary dancers in comparison to everyone else.

The two dancers from SYTYCD Canada Season 2 were tap and contemporary and they did a rather good job of it. At the same time I found it kind of odd that Sean Cheesman would create such a technically challenging and high octane theatre / broadway routine. Yes, for SYTYCD U.S. Sean has only created Jazz related routines… what gives? Sure, Tyce is a decent choreographer and Spencer Liff just got an Emmy nomination for his Broadway routines… but if the above routine is any indication I would love to see him try his hand on Broadway as well. If only because it forces the high octane / technically challenging routines to also depends on characterizations for the dancers.

What do you think?

SYTYCD Canada Cancelled

After one of the most fantastic seasons yet, the Canadian version of SYTYCD has been cancelled by CTV.

Hours after crowning Jordan Clark the Season 4 winner, the announcement was made official, this would be the last season of SYTYCD Canada.

“I can confirm that we are not ordering a fifth season of the series,” Scott Henderson, vice-president of communications for Bell Media told CityNews.ca.

“After four seasons and 92 episodes, CTV has decided to pursue other program strategies. This decision was made after careful consideration, including viewership and economic factors. We remain extremely proud of the legacy of So You Think You Can Dance Canada, including raising the profile of dance in this country,”

Fans are outraged, and they are not alone. Judges, choreographers and dancers alike are all in shocked and disappointed at this news.

Jean-Marc Genereux tweeted:

Dear Fans @SYTYCDCanada.no regrets! you were the best fans in the WORLD..SHOW is gone! But NOT your passion for DANCE,it’s a CTV decision!
You will hear all kinds of reasons!!! But you know what!!! Canada loved his DANCE SHOW and I’m sure the fans will react!!!

@TreArmstrong tweeted:

“Wow…honestly can’t believe #SYTYCDCanada has been cancelled,” Armstrong said Tuesday. “So disappointing for Canada & our amazing talent. Best season EVER! Love You.”
“Hope that #SYTYCDCanada comes back to live once more…thank you for 4 great seasons,” Armstrong wrote Tuesday. “The network, production, crew & talent, love u all.”

Luther Brown tweeted:

Its sad that the show has ended but God is good and we were all blessed to be apart of Canada’s best show! We went out with a bang!!!

Stacey Tookey tweeted:

I’m so sad to hear about the cancellation of SYTYCDC but I am so proud to know a group of people with that much talent & heart!! Love u all!

For me this is sad news. Granted I still watch SYTYCD USA, but there was something special about our Canadian SYTYCD and I am sad to see that go.

A part of me hopes that it will somehow survive, but only time will tell. There are a number of petitions and complaints going on to try and save the show. In the past, I know when a company cancels something, it is usually a done deal, but you never know!

How do you feel about this news?

Announcing the Winner:

Leah reminds us of prizes:
$5000 for 4 runner’s up
$10000 and a car for 1st runner up
$100000 and a car for winner.

Canada voted 1.6 million times

Christian, Lindsey, Shane are not in the top 2.

Matt is not in Top 2.

Melissa and Jordan remain… we are not surprised are we?

They both won cars… but there can only be one winner and it is…. Jordan Clark!

All of them are really winners… not just the money or cars, but the exposure they have had and the talent they have shown – I expect big things from all of them in the future 🙂

Overall Thoughts:

I am so thrilled Jordan won. I was rooting for her since auditions and think she is amazing.

I thought for a while Melissa may beat her because she showed such diversity and skill.

I also thought Matt somehow may pull (what I would consider) an upset and take it, though I felt Christian was a better dancer and Shane the best male dancer.

I didn’t think a male would win it though, the women were fierce.

Lindsey grew the most for me and I was so impressed with how much she improved and brought to the stage this season!

Congrats to Jordan, I am so proud and thrilled to see that my favourite from day one took it home!

Thoughts on the winner? The finale? The season?

SYTYCD Canada Top 10 Results – Down to 8

I apologize for not listing the bottom 3 or who I thought would go home in last night’s performance show post.

I wasn’t entirely sure how it would look because of the individual voting, also, I was pretty tired from driving 5 hours in the rain on scary highways from Kamloops to Vancouver.

Moving on….

Here is tonight’s results.

Top 10 Group Routine – Sabrina Matthews
“Heavy in Your Arms” Heavy In Your Arms - Lungs (Deluxe Edition) – Florence + The Machine

This was awesome. They all looked nude, wrapped in tape. It was really well choreographed and danced. I will post it once I find it on YouTube.

Female Results:

Lindsey – Safe
Denitsa – Not Safe
Yulia – Not Safe
Melissa – Not Safe *gasp*
Jordan – Safe

Male Results:
Christian – Not Safe
Shane – Safe
Francois – Not Safe
Adam – Not Safe
Matt – Safe

Solo’s
Denitsa – “Born This Way” Born This Way - Born This Way (Bonus Track Version) – Lady Gaga
She did very well, but she always does in her genre and her solo’s, trust me as we have seen her “dance for her life” numerous times.

Yulia – Not sure the song
She had feathers all over her outfit, danced like a bird and looked kind of strange to me. ANother we have seen too often “dance for her life”

Melissa – “Swans” – Uncle Bob
Shocked to see her in the bottom, but Jordan was there once also. I thought it would be Lindsey or Jordan only because we needed a bottom three. Was nice to see her solo, such talent!

Christian – Not sure the song
Danced amazingly well as I imagined he would.

Francois – Not sure the song.
He danced well. I didn’t expect him in the bottom based on last night but based on the whole season so far it didn’t surprise me.

Matt – “Fix the World Up for You” Fix the World Up for You - Songs for You, Truths for Me – James Morrison
So great to watch, really talented and powerful dancer!

In the end it was Yulia & Francois who went home.
It is going to be tough next week as we get down to the best of the best, or Canada’s most favourite!

Lindsey, Jordan, Melissa are so talented! Denitsa is also, but I think she is a one-trick show for the most part. I would LOVE Jordan to take it but I think Melissa may.

For the men, at this point, I feel bad saying that they all blur together still. I mean Shane is the clear front-runner for me, but Christian, Adam and Matt are all very talented, I would have a tough time putting one miles ahead of the others. I just feel Shane is amazing!

Who are your bets to take it all the way?

Side Note: It drives me NUTS when Leah Miller says “Why are you so…” last night she said it so many times.. “Why are you so good?” or “Why are you so in shape?” and “Why do you have to stop?” I can’t stand her! She comes across so condescending! Between her and Jean-Marc I almost can’t stand watching the show! I usually just watch the dances and maybe a guest judge or two, thank goodness for PVR (fast-forward the annoying parts)

SYTYCD Canada Top 10 Power Rankings

Tonight’s judges were Jean-Marc, Tre Armstrong, Stacey Tookey and Mary Murphy.

Tonight the dancer’s had new partner’s as well as solo’s to perform as we start voting for individual’s not couples this week.I think this will really show us who Canada likes and not mask poor dancers with partner’s who are favourites.

First of all I will do the Ranking of the Coupled Dances:
1. Jordan & Christian
Jazz – Sean Cheesman
“Skin” – Skin - Loud Rihanna

*CTV Has more photos that are amazing*
I know not everyone will agree with me but this routine was sexy and amazing. The start with one on each side of the wall yet still in sync, the spins and back flips and all that skin. It was sexy and my favourite of the night, but I think Canada may place them lower than I do.

2. Shane & Melissa
Hip Hop – Luther Brown
“The Time” The Time (Dirty Bit) - The Beginning (Deluxe Version) – Black Eyed Peas

I really loved this routine also, but hip hop sometimes scores lower with Canada’s votes. Melissa got her 6th standing ovation from the judges and she really worked this routine hard.

3. Lindsey & Adam
Contemporary – Blake McGrath
“Remember When it Rained” Remember When It Rained - Closer – Josh Groban

This was an amazing routine. It was my favourite when it came on but after the whole episode I felt stronger about the Hip Hop and Jazz routines, though I could be wrong. Honestly, all three of these routines were just absolutely fantastic!

4. Yulia & Matt
Contemporary – Sabrina Matthews
“My Love” My Love - The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [Deluxe Version] – Sia

I love this song and was impressed with Yulia despite her uncomfortableness with the routine. The fact is, to go further she needs to be able to step outside her genre, and she really doesn’t do that well. Tonight was good, but I think others were better.

5. Denitsa & Francois
Mambo – Gustavo Vergas
“Bemba Colora” – Ceilia Cruz

There were some nice moments and they are both ballroom so it was well done, but it was the first dance of the night, and not that memorable. Denitsa’s scarf didn’t come out and she almost dropped the one Francois threw to her to use. There was great partnering but overall it was just not as memorable or entertaining as the others.

Now for Solo’s, I don’t actually like the dancers in this order at all, but based JUST on what I saw tonight here are my thoughts…

Men:

1. Shane: David Guetta ft. Chris Willis’s “Love is Gone” – Love Is Gone (Original Mix) - Pop Life

2. Francois: Jackie Wilson’s “Reet Petite” – Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson: 20 Greatest Hits

3. Adam: The Bee Gees’s “You Should Be Dancing” – You Should Be Dancing - Saturday Night Fever (The Original Movie Soundtrack) [Remastered]

4. Christian: Max Sedgley’s “Happy (Spiritual South Go Happy in Rio Remix)” – Happy (Spiritual South Go Happy In Rio) - Happy - EP

5. Matt: Hedley’s “For the Nights I Can’t Remember” – For the Nights I Can't Remember - Never Too Late (Bonus Track Version)

Women:

1. Melissa: The Cinematic Orchestra’s “To Build a Home” – To Build a Home - Ma Fleur

2. Lindsey: Katie Thompson’s “It Doesn’t Hurt” – It Doesn't Hurt - KT LIVE

3. Jordan: Adele’s “Hometown Glory” – Hometown Glory - 19

4. Denitsa: Guem et Zaka Percussion Ensemble’s “Le Serpent”

5. Yulia: Peggy Lee’s “Fever” – Fever - The Best of Peggy Lee

PLEASE comment with your thoughts, I could be way off, but based on tonight’s show this is how I feel. I do not know how the eliminations will go tomorrow, but I will post results tomorrow

SYTYCD Canada Top 12 Group Routines

This was choreogrpahed by ShoTyme and features the Top 12 last week on SYTYCD Canada’s Performance Show.

I really liked the routine overall, especially since there is not a single Hip Hop Dancer left in the group…

They also did a Top 12 group routine choreographed by Jean-Marc & his wife on the Results Show:

Which do you like better? Isn’t it typical for Jean-Marc to have such a sexy routine?

I am excited to see what the Top 10 will bring Monday Night!!
