SYTYCD on Ellen

In case anyone missed it, the Top 6 from Season 11 were on Ellen this week. Such a fun dance to “Uptown Funk”. Also love that Twitch is there as the guest DJ as well.

Top 18 Power Rankings

Enjoyed the opening number from Josh Burgasse, gave me a flashback of a tap routine I did my senior year of high school. This was a preview of the choreography of the Broadway show “On the Town”, which is part of the prize for the winner this year.

I found myself more excited about the choreographers this time weather than the dancers. Maybe it was the partner switch, but I just was feeling for most of the performances. I also didn’t agree with the bottom six either but four out of the six seemed to redeem themselves where as Nick and Marlene did not, judges made the right call this week.

Top 4

Jacque and Zack: When I heard African Jazz and Sean Cheesman was involved I was already interested. This turned out to be the best routine of the night. Hair, make up, costumes, and concert were amazing. Jacque and Zack also performed this piece well.

Valerie and Ricky: Luckily they were one of the couples who did well with the switch up. Ricky is just amazing and to hear some of his training came from Desmond Richardson sort of surprised me and then eventually I thought well that makes sense. Valerie proved she can do things outside of just tap.

Carly and Surge: Carly was great last week and this week. Surge had to prove himself this week and to be honest I didn’t think he had to. He may no be the best at contemporary but he connected with the emotional aspect of the dance. Like the judges say all the time, Sonya knows how to get the best out of her dancers.

Brooklyn and Casey: Another great Argentine Tango from Miriam and Leonardo. How Casey ended up in the bottom I not sure other than maybe he is just easily forgotten. Brooklyn more than made up for her performance last week, and seem to prove that maybe her nerves got the better of her last week.

Middle 4

Emily and Teddy: I actually really enjoyed this and thought they both did a great job. Agreed that Emily should connect a little more with her partner first before focusing on performing for the audience.

Jourdan and Marcquet: Marcquet seems to be a very well-rounded dancer and I think he has a strong fan base. Jourdan I thought did a good job but I think she still has a lot to prove.

Tanisha and Rudy: I really didn’t find much wrong with this dance and I don’t think they will be in the bottom anytime soon. Rudy has a lot of room to grow and I think he will.

Bridgett and Emilio: This was in Emilio’s element and he did well but Bridgett wasn’t  believable. I think she could have been more hard-hitting.

Bottom 2

These two dances Nigel seemed to be a little too harsh on the dancers when it came to the Choreography, which isn’t their fault. I understand not liking the choreography but I at least will judge the dancers on how well they performed what was given to then. It’s ok to mention if you don’t like it but don’t go on and on about what was wrong with the  choreograph cause the last I checked the dancers don’t have any say in what is choreographed. So I’d wish they would critique the dancers and not the choreographers.

Nick and Jessica: It took others to say the song wasn’t right for the dance for me to realize that it was the song that was throwing me off. I thought they both did rather well but something seemed off. Jessica may be in danger next week but I don’t think she will go home jut yet.

Marlene and Stanley: Stanley is a great dancer but he had no connection with his partner and also seemed to out perform her…I don’t think he will be safe next week

Stanley and Jessica have a very good chance of being in the bottom but who will join them. I think we might see Bridgett, and Jourdan. As for the boys I’m a little more unsure of who might be there but I’m sure it will be a surprise.

Music Playlists

Many people have asked about music that is used during the audition episodes, unfortunately I’m unable to catch everything since my main focus is the dancers. Thankfully Fox’s website has the playlist of every episode, but the only downfall it doesn’t say which dance used what piece of music. So check out http://www.fox.com/dance/news for all the playlists and they also link to where you can purchase the song on I-Tunes. Only one that I have noticed that isn’t listed for the Atlanta auditions is what Mariah dance to. She dance to “I’m a Woman” by Maimouna Youssef. Hope this helps all the music questions.

Chicago and Los Angeles Auditions: Thoughts

Great night of auditions. I’ll add my thoughts tomorrow but the impromptu duet that Fikshun had with Marie Poppins was my absolute favorite moment of the night. So what did you think.

The show picks back up in Chicago for day 2 of the auditions, but first we get to see those that participated in the polar plunge. Mary Murphy was up for that challenge and so was Jimmy Fallon. Fabrice Calmes of the Joffrey Ballet, joins Mary and Nigel for day 2.

Paul “The Puppet”: I liked this guy a very unique new style. It was like a very fluid version of popping and animation. Nigel was out voted about going the choreography round, so Paul was sent to the next round.

Emily James: I really hope that the  third time is the charm for her. How cute were her cousins and the youngest didn’t want a ticket.

Is it me or am I seeing more of the male dancers in the montages.

Franchesce: This girl has unique written all over her. She uses the fact that she has alopecia to her advantage. I agree with the judges that Sonya and Mia would love her.

Jenna: Her excitement over meeting Fabrice was just too cute and I now I think he will take more notice of her after that audition. I would love to see her on pointe too.

James: The bone breaking stuff is just so hard too watch.

Day 1 LA with Christina Applegate and plenty of Alumni in the audience. So many great dancers on day one I can’t wait for day two.

Jessica: One of my favorites of the night. I love that the judges don’t even talk and just hand her a ticket. I think there is a really good chance we will see her in the top 20. Loved her long hair too…little jealous.

Valerie: I love that tap seems to be becoming more popular on the show. She did have to go through choreography round and she made it to the next round.

JaJa: We have Philip Chbeeb  to thank for this girl. I remember her from ABDC and she was only 15 when I am me competed. Love seeing strong female dancers in the hip hop genre.

Kyle: He impressed me with his dancing, for only dancing in his living room and not in front of an audience. Plus he was able to hold his own in the battle with Fikshun, Cyrus, and Legacy.

Justine, Hailee: both great dancers and would love to see more of them

Maurcio and Daisy: great Pas de Duex

Sebastian: Hope he makes it to the green mile this time and maybe even to top 20.

Dani: Granted not the first time we heard a story like hers but I still love how dance that can help them overcome their problems. I was a little confused that they made her do the choreography round.

Marie Poppins: Love the stage name and her. I think she had the best moment of the night. She dances from the heart and got not only the judges attention but Fikshun’s as well. I don’t know what made him get up and dance with her but I’m glad he did. I really hope she can do the other styles cause I would love to she her in the top 20.

The girls are strong this Season.

Season 11 Premiere Thoughts

The new season of So You Think You Can Dance starts off with new opening titles. Personally, I think it’s about time they changed then because the other one was getting old. Another slight change for this season the dancers are no longer getting a ticket to Vegas. Vegas week had been moved to Los Angeles, not sure why but I’m sure you can tweet Nigel @dizzyfeet and he might answer with the reason. Although, I did feel bad for the one dancer that was celebrating saying “I’m going to Vegas!” and I’m not sure who told him that he wasn’t (they obviously were correcting him) but talk about a buzz kill. I’m mean just let them celebrate making it to the next round.

I wish I could post my timeline from twitter last night cause I loved seeing other past contestants thoughts and even some of the choreographers. It’s hard to keep track of all of the auditions but I did see a feel the stood out for me and two dancers I would put in my personal top 20.

New Orleans, LA: Guest Judge Wayne Brady

Shelby and her dad Mike: great dancer, I would like to see more or her. I not sure why but I love that the dads are so willing to get up there and dance. When he said bottle dance I wasn’t quite prepared for what happen next. Later he challenged another dad to a dance off…too funny

Tensha: She was the first of the ballroom dancers to audition without a partner. I enjoyed her solo but I would really like to see what she can do with a partner.

Anyone see the Degree commercial featuring Jasmine Harper?

Megan Marcano: From her story you knew she had a difficult time growing up but she never let her get her down. She could have easily done a solo that tugged at the heart-strings. Instead she did a fun quirky solo. I’d like to see her in the top twenty.

Trevor Bryce: Seriously loved this guy and I want him in the top 20. I sorta agree with Nigel that he had probably one of the best audition solos in the history of the show. Trevor was just fun and entertaining.

Caleb Brauner: I remember him from last season and if I remember correctly he made it to Vegas but was sent back home pretty quickly. So sad to hear about his dad, and when you hear stories like that you just want to cheer him on. Sad that he did make it past the choreography round.

Jacoby: Sure he wasn’t right for the show but I would take his Zumba class and love Wayne getting up there and showing off his moves.

Marquette and Brooklyn: Glad that Marquette came back. These two had a great chemistry. I hope they can do other styles of dance.

Chicago, IL: Guest Judge Jenna Elfman

I love Jenna as a judge and she gave great advice before the auditions started.

Nick and Rudy: I have to say their footage in Miami was cute. I wasn’t sure how good they would be and thankfully they were good. I was  also a bit surprised that they specialized in two different genres. Nick in latin ballroom and Rudy in contemporary.

No one else really stood out in the different montages.

Caleb came back for a second time and this time he succeeded in making it to the next round. Everything was better this time around.

Day 2 of Chicago will be continued next week.

The Dance Crews: The only problem I had was,  I wished they showed more of the dancing.

Poreotics and the Syncopated Ladies were up first. Poreotics I have seen before on America’s Best Dance Crew (I believe they won). The Syncopated Ladies got my vote last night, love that they are a tap crew.

Back to one Winner for SYTYCD

Nigel Lythgoe made this announcement on twitter today. He also said that the Judges will no longer be able to save people once we get to the Top 10. I’m not sure how the voting will work for this season but I’m going to take a guess it will go back to voting for the couples until the Top 10 and then voting for the individual dancers after.

After the last two seasons when the Judges could save dancers till the top 6, I am happy about the Judges save ending when we get to the top 10. I feel like it gives more power back to the viewers/voters.  Now I feel about going back to one winner…honestly I’ve got mixed feelings about it. I think I’m on the fence about this idea because I did like recognizing the best female and male dancer.

What are your thoughts.

Dance Crews to Compete on SYTYCD

Thanks to Justin Bieber and his choreographer Nick DeMoura, SYTYCD is getting a new competitive element added to the show…dance crews. My initial thought was how is this going to work and then I read the rest of the news article to find out the dance crews are competing for a performance spot on the finale. Also, America gets to help pick what crew wins that spot. So here’s how it’s supposes to work. During each of the four auditions shows some of the best crews will be introduced to the voting public. After all of the crews have performed #hashtags will be revealed for the twitter vote…and the one with the most votes will win.

My Thoughts: Since America’s Best Dance Crew is no longer on MTV, I think it is great idea to show case dance crews.
